​Discrimination in the workplace

Racial and gender discrimination is something that is happening all around us and it isn't something small. It happens in the justice system, in schools, and in a workplace. Sure, society and the government are trying to get rid of discrimination by inputting laws and rules to set a mindset that everyone should be treated equally and given the same opportunities. But the workplace is one place that discrimination has not much improved because of the ignorance of the company.

The Affirmative action policy is put in place to help reduce discrimination for minorities like African Americans when they are seeking jobs by making sure that no person would be refused a job based on race. The Women's Bureau is established in the Department of Labor to ensure that women were paid better, worked in a suitable and safe environment and were given opportunities men had that women didn't have before. These were steps taken to give minorities and women the equal opportunities that white men had. But it isn't enough and some companies are still hiring mainly white men and not giving their jobs to anyone else.

One example is Google. A company like Google couldn't be doing so degrading like discrimination and only hiring certain people, right? Wrong. Google has recently been under an investigation by the Department of Labor because of the complaint of the lack of diversity in the staff and these were the results that were obtained from “Business Insider”. These results are no coincidence. Google has been purposefully hiring more White and Asian men than women or any other race. They aren’t giving other women or minorities who have applied for a job at their company a chance just because they weren’t the ethnicity or gender they were seeking. The results shown here was the third report that was done of Google’s Diversity in the staff. In the first report that was done which was in 2014, 70% of workers at Google were men and only 30% was a woman. In addition, 61% were white and 30% were Asian. Compared to the 2017 statistics that showed 69% of workers being male and 31% females, Google hasn’t changed at all, and this isn’t good. People who desire to work at Google are going to have a bit of tough time if they aren’t white males. Over the span of 3 years, Google hasn’t made any progress to


increase diversity in the workplace and that is absurd. According to “Forbes�, over 2 million people apply to work at google, one would think that with this many people applying that they could easily fix the problem with the lack of diversity over the course of 3 YEARS but no, almost no progress was made at all and that is ridiculous! Companies as big as Google have shown us that even they are discriminating people and picking favorites to the point that even their own staff are complaining about it. Discrimination is not a small problem, it affects people almost everywhere and can have an impact on what jobs they can choose from because certain jobs will probably seek a more desirable race or gender than others. There needs to be more guidelines to make sure that everyone can actually have an equal opportunity in this society. Certain people are at a disadvantage just because of who they are and are not being hired because of what they can actually do to help benefit the company or workplace. If America really wants to get rid of discrimination then one big step is to get jobs to stop picking favorites and give other people chances rather than overlooking them just because of who they are. When this is done then we are truly taking the steps needed for this big change to happen!
