The Brief

New proposed circulation route location

Existing Reception space

Investigate the redesign of British American Tobacco Company’s secondary reception in their Southampton office and to provide the following: • Tall cupboard – minimum 1x double unit (dry cleaning) • PC’s x 3 • Multi purpose copier x 1 • Visitor seating area and table • Wall mounted flat screen • Beverage machine – behind reception area • Luggage storage area • Stationery and filing cupboard x 1 minimum • 2 x receptionists • 1 x help desk • Omit double set of doors to the left of reception and create new office circulation route behind the back wall of reception • Omit double set of doors to the right of reception to create more usable reception areas Design opportunities • Go beyond the existing glazing façade to explore mixed use of space • Can remove existing revolving doors to create more space.

• Circulation route moved to back wall • Revolving doors removed • Existing entrance canopy removed • New glass canopy created • Existing framed glass façade removed • New frameless façade created • Glass sliding or double set of entrance doors created • Reception facilities as per brief housed in central boxed enclosure • Plasma screen on the left as you enter, seating area close by • Help desk area to the left of the reception block can be accessed from the side for added privacy • Main circulation route to the office via the right hand side of reception.

• Circulation route moved to back wall • Revolving doors removed • Existing entrance canopy removed • New smoked glass box created to keep UV values down, pushed beyond existing glazing line • Existing framed glass façade removed • New frameless façade created around smoked glass box • Glass sliding or double set of entrance doors created • Front of house reception desk located separate to back of house facilities by feature wall behind receptionists • Main circulation route to the office via the right hand side of reception.

• Circulation route moved to back wall • Removal of all existing reception structure and mechanical and electrical components, including existing roof, canopy and revolving doors • New feature roof formed • New curtain wall to align with line of brick wall to car park • Main reception to the left as you enter 2 x receptionists one side of staircase • Feature plasma totems 2 storey high located behind reception and next to staircase • New staircase formed to link ground floor reception with new café located within the 1 st floor level of the atrium • Feature wall behind reception separates the back of house • Facilities required as part of the initial brief • Help desk separated from the receptionists by the staircase and totem plasma wall • 1st floor café seating and breakfast bar next to kiosk • Glass walls on both levels to circulation route.
