The Opportunity to Try Everything Wakefield empowers students to grow.

“Our students aren’t pushed through a system: they’re raised in our vibrant community where every child is seen, known, and valued.” Wakefield makes excellence fun. Along with academics, we require students to try everything we offer. They experience themselves as artists, musicians, athletes, scientists, writers, and more. It’s no wonder Wakefield students are happy with their studies, and who they are today—and can become.

Wakefield’s high educational standards have been recognized by the major independent-school accreditation associations, placing Wakefield in the company of the highest-caliber independent schools in Virginia and in the nation.

The Drive to Think Deeper Wakefield students seek facts, context, and why things matter.

What does it mean to “grow in wisdom and virtue?” At Wakefield, it means learning to think critically and act ethically. It means developing the strong sense of self-worth necessary to recognize others’ contributions and have compassion for their concerns. Every day—in class, at home, in the community, and on the playground and playing fields— it means striving to help make the world better.

THE WAKEFIELD EXPERIENCE

helps students develop a broader view of life and understand the vital role of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

The Power to Excel

Wakefield graduates thrive in college . . . and life.

At Wakefield, “college prep” is part of every year. Students master content, study skills, and success habits. They learn to prepare both for tests and for opportunities. Nothing is left to chance. In fact, the college application process itself is built into Wakefield’s Junioryear curriculum, including the writing of college essays as graded assignments.

The moment our students graduate, they’re ready.

They’re ready to turn in first assignments that are already college caliber. They don’t waste time as they develop mentor relationships, join campus clubs, engage in activities, make sound judgments, set goals, and start building a new community . . . and future. A SAMPLING OF RECENT SENIOR THESES

WAKEFIELD’S OUTSTANDING FACULTY

develop outstanding students, endowing them with skills to research, listen, collaborate, analyze, reflect, and communicate effectively —for their entire lives.

When giving prospective students examples of “perfect applications,” University of Virginia admissions staff cite the essay written by a Wakefield student who is now among UVA alumni.

An Education in Civility and Purpose “You can spot a Wakefield student immediately: looking you in the eye, shaking your hand, and extending their hands to help others and make a difference.” Wakefield’s emphasis on wisdom and virtue shapes students into fine young men and women who are articulate, confident, empathetic, and comfortable in the world. And when they are no longer Wakefield students, they remain people guided by what’s right, what matters, and how they can make a difference.

THE UPPER-SCHOOL CURRICULUM ACADEMICS The academic program is delivered in a rotating block schedule with two 75-minute and one 30-minute class period per class per week. The school year is divided into two semesters of approximately 18 weeks. Typical class load is 7 classes and one study hall, though students with more rigorous schedules may opt for a second. Wakefield offers a dual English program with dedicated Literature and Composition periods at each grade level. In the 11th- and 12th-grade years, Composition is devoted to the Junior and Senior theses. There are two options for the Senior Thesis: the regular section is project based, made up of five distinct projects; the honors section consists of a traditional scholarly research paper, typically 30-50 pages in length, and a culminating defense. Both sections undertake a yearlong inquiry into a topic of the student’s choosing. CLASS OF 2022 GPA DISTRIBUTION • 5YR AVERAGE GPA: 3.46
