YEAR: 2019

Tree Opera is a collaborative event between musicians, artists and architects, which encourages reflection on the relationship between humans and the forest. The venue is located in the north of Finland, an area known for some of the oldest natural forests in Europe. The main consideration was to design a forest amphitheatre without damaging the natural habitat. The event venue is designed as a biodegradable structure, which will decay and become a forest in several years.
Project lead: Project management, preparation and research materials, concept development, architectural design, technical design, presentation materials, communication, supervision.
Before local flora and flora takes over it is used by artists and the community for various types of events. The platforms take advantage of the natural terrain and blend into the landscape. The venue is formed by several separate platforms and tribunes to minimize the impact on nature.
The placement of the venue is based on a careful research on the existing environment
The construction is based on ancient methods - tapping joints and protecting the surface of the wood by burning it
The process behind the event has been documented in film Tree Opera by Martins Grauds https://vimeo.com/371366285

The competition proposal for Riga Circus revitalisation is based on the historical heritage, storytelling and a vision of a new, contemporary architecture. The various functions of circus can be seen in the diverse volumes of roofs, representing their complexity. Therefore the skyline reminds of a travelling circus village, gathering around the main tents. The project covers reconstruction of the existing circus arena, adapting space for residence, education and administration programmes, creating a new Black Box arena and reorganising public space.

STATUS: PROPOSAL TYPE: INFRASTRUCTURE/CULTURE
TEAM: INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
LOCATION: RIGA, LATVIA
YEAR: 2023
The borderless port of Eksportosta breaks down the borders between the port and the city and creates a vivid melting pot between tourism, leisure and contemporary culture. An elevated promenade stretches across the territory to provide a unique opportunity to observe the activities taking place in the passenger port. The project emphasises the importance of opening former restricted industrial areas to the public to create a diverse, inclusive and sustainable environment.
The gentle warehouse adaptation to a passenger terminal is executed in a rational and sustainable way, without losing the industrial image. The historical identity of Eksportosta is tightly linked to the port activities. The impressive scale, tectonics and semantics of the existing warehouse highlights its former use.The project proposes to maintain the existing activities of contemporary art and reintroduce the typology of passenger terminal as a melting pot between tourism, leisure and contemporary culture.
The project aims to provide the community with open access to its waterfront by creating public open squares and promenades.
The layout of space provides a range of flexibility and a diverse functional use due to the openplan layout and openings.
Port-related
The project is designed as a response to the Riga Municipality plan to develop infrastructure for a Passenger Terminal in Eksportosta. activities are separated from the public space on the ground level to meet the security and customs requirements. An elevated volume joins the separated areas and offers a unique opportunity to observe the activities taking place in the harbour.
