Trade-E-Learning Mid project report

The Mid project report.... Trade-E-Learning Well it’s not all that bad in fact it is taking shape now. In spite of the initial drama with surgery things are improving at a faster rate. Our position to the start was a basic moodle structure, duplicated from carpentry that showed signs of malfunction, with images missing and resources unsuitable for the generic nature of the project plan. New development tools, learning to use software to improve and aligning new resources and making them more interactive have taken more time than first thought. Deciding on the best type of resources, structuring and building them is a challenge that will be on going. Video, sound editing, Flash CS3, Deamweaver, Illustrator, Wavepad, Recordpad and Jing, these programs make it possible to produce excellent resources, see the links below to view a demonstration. BCG1001B Carry out OH&S requirements

What requirements? Who is required? Why are they Required?

This is a screen shot of power point used in the Unit OH&S produce by me with more emphasis on images to convey the messages. The next version is going to be smaller in size, thought the image quality is a key component in getting the message home in small chunks.

Suitable project resources are coming along and setting aside some technical difficulties which are being address as we go they will by the projects completion date be substantially in place and validated. The Moodle site at present is still badged as WCL (Wall & Ceiling Lining) however Rob Davenport is changing the course name to reflect the projects brief (BCG03 Cert1) making it more generic to the trades. Testing will begin next week and after the feedback has been collected from peers and students we will have a better idea of what needs to be altered what worked well and where to improve. Glyn Milhench is compiling some more video content featuring students in the workshops and using the system, I am collecting information for the guile booklet and Ho To manual, so things are on track and fingers crossed will continue that way.

Demo Links

The screen shot is of the web page I have developed, the Idea was to use it as an information page in the Moodle that would lead the student to the courses information visually using interactivity, buttons, Spry collapsible and accordion type menus and links. This should help get the learning resources to students anywhere in the state and beyond. Dreamweaver CS3 is a great program and once you get into it a lot of features are done for you. http://www.groups.edna.edu.au/file.php/1904/Projec t_Documents/ScreenShot_of_TradeELearning_Web_Page.png

This is a demo produced with Flash CS3 and the idea is to develop short interactive swfs, like this with button to click that demonstrates concepts, terms, etc to students they could be connected to tests feedback forms that say they have been viewed or inserted into Quiz questions, multiple choice or similar. Flash takes time to get used to however I believe that TAFESA has student who could come up with some brilliant files http://www.groups.edna.edu.au/file.php/1904/ New_Resources/3dsOfMeasurement.swf

These are demos of the type of new resource I have been working on click on the links above, I used Dreamweaver, Adobe FlashCS3, Jing screen Capture software, enjoy them and let us know what you thinks, its all about the feedback.

Jing Screen shot video of the Flash OH&S signage SWF presentation. Other resources are under development and will be put on the Edna site soon. This type of resource we have found to be reasonable easy to produce but time consuming, hopefully that will get much quicker as we go along.

Planning what is in the swf is the hard part, I see them used in quizzes as part of the questions embedded in the page, they need to be small though and straight to the point.

Summary I have enjoyed the project and learnt an amazing number of things and over the coming months I hope that the team and I can make this project a real success spread it to other trades areas in out Building Construction & Furnishing section. If possible I will make it available to anyone I can when it is completed should they want to use it. The project has revealed a lot of issues in the development and use of resources and the lack of use of on-line facilities in my trade area. The resources that are on-line, tend to be single page picture and text style and there is a definite lack of interactive content. The initial stage of the project: collecting and reviewing information & resources made it clear to me that anything developed for the project had to be carefully put together. There would often be no other input immediately prior to assessment. The lecturer may be 100km away when the student views the resources and uses the assessment tools. They may have had input from lecturers at another time but it is up to the student to view the learning materials, do the research and then be assessed on-line. For that reason it has been decided that the format and content is different than what is used in the classroom and even the written course materials. Small swf, video, graphics type resources seemed to be the best way combined with the standard PDF based on-line course material. Breaking down the units into individual subject, image galleries for parts, tools, techniques and application will feature strongly in the next wave of generated resources. The project is bigger than expected however the amount of learning and experience has been invaluable and will make implementing the spread of on-line learning to the rest of the trades in our area an easier exercise in the near future. P.S AT last my neck is beginning to show signs that it is getting better Cheers, Rob Beckett rob.beckett@internode.on.net rob.beckett@tafesa.edu.au 0410 886 270
