Top Story - The Robert Morris University men’s basketball team closes out a two-game homestand to open Northeast Conference action Saturday with a 7:00 p.m. tip against Central Connecticut State at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Colonials opened their 2012-13 NEC slate with an 84-77 setback to Bryant (1/3/13), their second straight loss and dropping RMU to 15-17 (.469) all-time in league lidlifters. Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones led four Colonials in double figures scoring against the Bulldogs with a season-high 24 points while also adding six assists and a career-high six steals. Sophomore forward Lucky Jones and junior guard Karvel Anderson each contributed 13 points, while junior forward Mike McFadden scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds. RMU returns to the road after hosting the Blue Devils Saturday, making its annual swing through New Jersey for a pair of league tilts. Robert Morris will visit Fairleigh Dickinson Thursday, Jan. 10, for a 7:00 p.m. tip before traveling to West Long Branch, N.J., Saturday, Jan. 12, for a 7:00 p.m. tip against Monmouth in a game that will be televised live on MSG.

Quick Stat of the Night - Most head coaches will point out that it’s good to get off to a good start in games, and for Robert Morris, the truth is in the numbers. Head Coach Andrew Toole Third Season - Penn ’03 When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of Athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketball program, he didn’t have to look far. Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-year Division I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May 11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of the Colonials. He owns an overall record of 52-31 (.627). Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole. Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 200910 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading the Colonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Conference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shy of earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials to an overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped Robert Morris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tournament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despite falling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to the quarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in the first round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the last five years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff through the 2011-12 campaign, RMU posted an overall record of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league opposition and have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 134 team or individual records, with 54 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the championship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16 years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac in the 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010, RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NEC Tournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting to player development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayette to the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served as the director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management for the nation's largest high school exposure camp. Toole was a four-year starter at the Division I level, playing for Elon University (1998-2000) before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania (2000-03). Over his four-year career at Elon and Penn, Toole averaged 12.3 points per contest, finishing with 1,341 points in 109 games. He also posted averages of 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.2 steals per contest. Toole, who married the former Brooke Kelly June 3, 2011, resides in the Pittsburgh suburb of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

Home On The Range - Velton Jones enjoys playing his home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center, as the redshirt senior guard enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State as one of four players averaging in double figures at “The Chuck” so far this season. In five home games, Jones is averaging 17.8 points and 5.8 assists per contest while shooting 46 percent (23-for-50) from the field and 91.9 percent (34-for-37) at the free-throw line. Joining Jones in scoring in double figures in home games in 2012-13 is junior guard Karvel Anderson (11.6 ppg), junior forward Mike McFadden (10.8 ppg) and sophomore forward Lucky Jones (10.4 ppg). Combined, that quartet is shooting 56.6 percent (82-for-145) from the field, including 54.2 percent (32-for-59) from beyond the arc, at home. Tag Team - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams and junior guard Karvel Anderson have teamed up this season to give Robert Morris a lethal combination from deep. Through the first 14 games of the 2012-13 season, the duo have combined for 71 three-pointers, an average of 5.1 per contest. Anderson enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State ranked second in the Northeast Conference in three-pointers per game (2.71), while Williams ranks seventh (2.36). The duo are on pace to finish the 2012-13 regular season with 158 three-pointers, which would place Anderson and Williams as the top three-point shooting tandem in school history. The current record of 150 is held by former Colonials Jeremy Chappell (2005-09) and Jimmy Langhurst (2006-10), who turned the trick in 2008-09. Dishing It Out - Velton Jones has been RMU’s floor general for the last four years, and the proof is in the numbers. Jones enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.36 per game) and fourth in assistto-turnover ratio (1.97). Just the eighth player in school history to eclipse 400 career assists, Jones needs 88 dimes to eclipse the career record of 555 that is held by former point guard Forest Grant (1980-84). He would need to average 5.2 assists per game over RMU’s final 17 regular-season contests to eclipse the mark. Break Out - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones produced a season-high 24 points in RMU’s 2012-13 Northeast Conference opener vs. Bryant (1/3/13), hitting eight of his 17 shots from the field, including 3-of-8 from long range, and going a perfect 5-for-5 at the free-throw. He also established a career high with six steals against the Bulldogs. For Jones, it marked the 15th time in his career he’s eclipsed 20 points in a game, which ranks ninth all-time at Robert Morris. Jones needs five 20+ point performances to become just the eighth player in school history to score at least 20 points in a game 20 times. RMU’s all-time leader in career 20+ point games is all-time leading scorer Myron Walker, who turned the trick 47 times from 1990 to 1994. Free Is For Me - In its only exhibition game of the 2012-13 preseason, the Colonials posted an 81-67 win over Saint Vincent (11/1/12) despite struggling at the free-throw line, converting just 54.5 percent (18-for-33) of their attempts at the charity stripe. It’s been a complete reversal since the beginning of the regular season, as Robert Morris enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State having shot 76.1 percent (236-for-310) at the chalk in its first 14 games of 2012-13, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Leading the way is redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who has converted 85 percent (68-for-80) of his attempts at the chalk, which ranks second in the NEC. Straight Shooter - Despite taking just four shots from the field in RMU’s 2012-13 Northeast Conference opener against Bryant (1/3/13), redshirt junior guard Coron Williams is an important part of the offense for the Colonials. Williams enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State having converted 55 percent (22-for-40) of his shots from the field over the last five games, including 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from beyond the arc. During that span Williams is averaging 12.8 points per game and has pushed his career total in three-pointers to 169, which ranks seventh all-time at RMU. Williams ranks third in the NEC so far this season in three-point field goal percentage at 45.8 percent (33-for-72). 50 Cent - Third-year head coach Andrew Toole picked up his 50th career victory thanks to RMU’s 66-54 win @ Hampton (12/8/12). The victory came in his 79th game on the sidelines guiding the Colonials. Toole is the second fastest head coach in school history to reach 50 career wins, trailing only former head coach Mike Rice (2007-10), who turned the trick in his 72nd game at Robert Morris.

Robert Morris put together its greatest comeback in school history in garnering a 74-72 win over Youngstown State (11/25/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The Penguins held a 57-34 lead with 16:07 to play, but the Colonials closed the game on a 40-15 run to garner the victory. It marks the largest deficit on record that RMU has ever come back from in its 37-year Division I history. Former guard Bateko Francisco (200709) hit a jumper with 2.7 seconds to play that helped lift the Colonials to the win over the Penguins.

The Colonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie the league mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart, 116-63, on February 22, 2000. It marks the third time in the last five seasons that the Colonials have paced the circuit in steals, as RMU also led the league in both 2007-08 and 2008-09. In 2007-08 the Colonials averaged 9.91 steals per game to pace the NEC, followed by a league-high average of 8.60 in 2008-09. Scouting the Blue Devils - Central Connecticut State carries an overall record of 4-8 (.333) into Saturday’s game against Robert Morris, including a mark of 0-1 in the Northeast Conference. The Blue Devils opened their 2012-13 NEC slate with a 67-60 setback @ Saint Francis University (1/3/13). In that contest sophomore guard Kyle Vinales paced CCSU with 23 points and also added three assists, two blocks and two steals, while junior guard Matt Hunter contributed 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Vinales and Hunter are one of the top scoring tandems in the country, as the duo combine to average 39.7 points per game. Vinales scores at a 20.9 points per contest clip, tops in the NEC, while Hunter produces averages of 18.8 points and a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Vinales also owns a team-high 40 assists for Central Connecticut State, while Hunter leads the Blue Devils in steals with 33. Central Connecticut State Head Coach - A four-time Northeast Conference Coach of the Year, Howie Dickenman (Central Connecticut State ’70) is in his 17th season as head coach of the Blue Devils. He enters Saturday’s game with an overall record of 253-232 (.523), including a mark of 165-109 (.602) against members of the NEC. RMU’s Last Game - The Bryant trio of Dyami Starks, Frankie Dobbs and Alex Francis combined for 73 points to help bolster the Bulldogs to an 84-77 victory over Robert Morris, Jan. 3, at the Charles L. Sewall Center in the 2012-13 Northeast Conference opener for both programs. Trailing, 58-51, with 5:44 remaining, a three-pointer from sophomore forward Lucky Jones and a fastbreak layup by redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson pulled RMU within two, 58-56, with just under five minutes to go. Francis helped stem the tide, however, with a layup to give Bryant a 60-56 advantage, then added two at the free-throw line to give the Bulldogs a 62-56 cushion. Robert Morris again made it a one-possession contest, 62-60, on the strength of a free throw from junior guard Anthony Myers-Pate and a three-pointer from junior guard Karvel Anderson, but Starks helped seal the win for the Bulldogs with a pair of three-pointers on backto-back possessions that gave Bryant a 68-60 edge with 3:11 to play. Bryant eventually stretched its lead to 71-60 and sealed the victory at the free-throw line, finishing 16-for-18 at the stripe in the final 2:27. In a game that featured six ties and six lead changes, Bryant jumped out to a 14-7 advantage on the strength of its shooting from beyond the arc, as Starks, Dobbs and Joe O'Shea each connected for three-pointers. RMU used a 7-0 spurt to tie the game, 2020, with 6:29 to play in the first half thanks to a three-point play from junior forward Mike McFadden, a jumper from Johnson and a layup from junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Bryant was able to weather any run the Colonials generated, however, eventually entering the break with a 33-32 edge. In the second half the Bulldogs opened up a 51-41 advantage with 11:24 to go after a three-pointer from Dobbs, but a 10-0 surge that featured a pair of three-pointers from Anderson tied the score, 51-51, with 8:31 left. The Bulldogs grabbed the lead right back at the stripe, as Francis hit a trio of free throws and O'Shea a pair to give Bryant a 56-51 lead with 6:14 to go. The Race to 1,000 - Redshirt senior forward Russell Johnson reached double-figures in scoring for the first time on the 2012-13 campaign in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center with 14 points. Johnson reached double figures on the strength of an 11-for-12 performance at the free-throw line, establishing career highs in both categories. Johnson is now just 60 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000point club and, barring injury, will become just the 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-rebound clubs. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, meanwhile, is 229 points shy of 1,000 for his career. Block Party - It’s early in the 2012-13 campaign, but it may be safe to say that Robert Morris has never had as natural a shot blocker in school history than junior forward Vaughn Morgan. Through the first 14 games of the season, Morgan has recorded 20 blocks, an average of 1.43 per contest that ranks third in the Northeast Conference behind Wagner’s Noafall Folahan and Mario Moody. Based on his current average, Morgan will shatter the Robert Morris single-season record for rejections. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (2008-10) finished with 35 blocks during the 2008-09 campaign, breaking a record that had stood for almost 25 years. Morgan, meanwhile, is on pace to finish the regular season with 44 blocks. Rockin The Chalk - No Colonial in school history has shown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better than redshirt senior guard Velton Jones. In a 71-60 victory over Bowling Green (11/19/12) in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, Jones paced Robert Morris with 16 points on the strength of a 9-for-10 performance at the charity stripe. For Jones, RMU’s all-time leader in both free throws (465) and free-throw attempts (640), it marked the 18th time in his career he’s visited the charity stripe at least 10 times in a game. Jones enters Saturday’s game against Central Connecticut State leading the Colonials in both free throws (68) and free-throw attempts (80), a success rate of 85 percent that ranks second in the Northeast Conference. Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 games for Robert Morris in 2011-12, is RMU’s active leader for consecutive starting assignments. Williams has started 56 straight games dating back to the 2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jones started 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season. A Special Night - Junior guard Karvel Anderson put forth arguably the most impressive shooting display in school history in an 84-76 win over Ohio (12/1/12) at the Sewall Center, hitting all 10 of his shots from the floor in the victory, including 8-for-8 from beyond the arc. Anderson is the first student-athlete in school history to post a perfect shooting night from the field with as many as 10 field goals. Former Colonial Rob Robinson (200810) held the old mark when he finished 9-for-9 shooting from the floor in a 104-56 win over Wagner Jan. 17, 2009, at the Sewall Center. Anderson is also just the second student-athlete in school history to convert eight field goals from beyond the arc without a miss. Former Colonial Scott Shepherd (1988-91) also finished 8-for-8 from deep in a 110-80 win over LIU Brooklyn Feb. 8, 1990, at the Sewall Center. Lee led the NEC against league opposition in steals in 2004-05 (2.1 spg), 2006-07 (2.6 spg) and 2007-08 (2.4 spg), while Chappell accomplished the feat in both 2005-06 (2.2 spg) and 2008-09 (2.6 spg). 10 Spot - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams recorded his sixth double-figure scoring game of the 2012-13 campaign @ Arkansas (12/20/12), scoring a season-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including a 5-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. When Williams scores at least 10 points in a game, it’s a good sign for Robert Morris. The Colonials enter Thursday’s s tilt against Bryant with a record of 27-8 (.771) over the last three years when Williams scores in double figures, the highest win percentage among active players on the Robert Morris roster. RMU’s loss @ Arkansas snapped a streak of eight consecutive wins when Williams scored at least 10 points in a game. The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last four seasons, as the redshirt senior is in his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning the longest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 118 straight contests for RMU dating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 112 career starts, far and away the highest mark for a Colonial. Jones is just the fifth player in school history to start at least 100 career games, and thanks to his start @ Arkansas (12/20/12) ranks third all-time at RMU in career starts, trailing only former Colonials Andre Boyd (114) and Jeremy Chappell (120). Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketball program over the last six seasons has been defense. Thanks to a 66-61 win @ LouisianaLafayette (12/18/12), Robert Morris owns a record to 96-19 (.835) since the beginning of the 2007-08 campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 45-12 (.789) when turning the trick. Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his second season as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in 2011-12. RMU has had four players reach double figures in scoring a total of 27 times in three seasons under head coach Andrew Toole, with the Colonials owning a record of 18-9 (.667) in those contests. Included in that stretch is a perfect 3-2 (.600) record so far on the 2012-13 campaign. On The Offensive - Bolstered by a shooting percentage of 65.6 percent (21for-32) in the second half of a 91-69 win over Duquesne (12/15/12) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, RMU produced one of its best shooting nights of the 2012-13 campaign. The Colonials finished the game with a shooting percentage of 50.7 percent (34-for-67), including a mark of 46.4 percent (13for-28) from beyond the arc. Robert Morris celebrated its 25th season of playing its home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in 2009-10. The facility was dedicated in 1985 and named for the man who served Robert Morris as president from 1967 until 1989. The Sewall Center has been the site where the Northeast Conference Tournament champion has been crowned in men’s basketball a total of five times in the last 27 years, with the Colonials winning four of those titles. RMU won the NEC Tournament on its home court in 1989, 1990, 1992 and 2009, while in 1986 No. 2 seed Marist won the championship with a 57-56 win over No. 1 seed Fairleigh Dickinson. The 2009 NEC Tournament men's basketball championship game held at the Sewall Center featured the first sell-out crowd in school history, with 3,227 fans packed into the arena to watch Robert Morris post a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s that was televised nationally on ESPN2. Former forward Dallas Green (2006-10) hit the game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds to play to help lift the Colonials to their sixth NEC Tournament title. In addition, the Robert Morris women’s basketball team claimed back-to-back NEC Tournament championships at the Sewall Center in 2007 and 2008. The Need for Three Over the course of the last decade, converting the three-point shot and Robert Morris have become synonymous. Despite having its string of consecutive seasons with at least 200 three-pointers snapped at six by finishing with 197 in 2009-10, the Colonials are at the top of the Northeast Conference over the last 10 years in three-point field goals made per game. Since the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Colonials have averaged 7.12 three-pointers per contest, ahead of St. Francis Brooklyn for the most in the NEC. In 2011-12, redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams paced Robert Morris by draining 87 three-pointers, the second highest total in the RMU single-season record book. So far this season, the Colonials have been led by junior guard Karvel Anderson with 38 three-pointers.
