SPOTLIGHT ON OUR BOARD OF DIRECTOR PRESIDENT: AMY OLIVER We were delighted to have Amy Oliver’s talents when she joined us three years ago as an avid volunteer and member of our Board of Directors. In 2016, she chaired our Governance Committee and in November 2016 accepted the Board President position for a two‐year term starting January 2017. Amy is a Vice President of Financial Services at Morgan Stanley. She has developed a successful practice and has served her clients for over 17 years focusing on comprehensive wealth management for individuals and families. Amy joined the Ronald McDonald House Board because she’s passionate about caring for families and children, and she believes in the importance of philanthropy and giving back to the community. Additionally, she is an active volunteer at the Palo Alto Veterans Hospital. Hailing from a small farm town in Kansas, Amy is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago and currently resides in Redwood City. Amy has been a welcome addition to the Board and when she’s not leading the Board, she can be found welcoming guests and families at our events and family dinners.
“The House was a place for us to heal together, as a family. It was our home away from home ‐ where we played, laughed, and celebrated Krystal's birthday ‐ un l we could all go home together.” ‐ Sarah P., Krystal’s Mom
A YEAR OF REFLECTION As I reflect on 2016 here at RMH‐SF, I am first and foremost overwhelmed with gra tude for my job and the opportunity to be part of this impac ul organiza on. On a daily basis, I’m inspired by the for tude and strength demonstrated by our families, in the face of the most difficult and uncertain circumstances. Frankly, I’m o en in awe of their ability to persevere. I am truly honored to serve this vital need, alongside our selfless volunteers and board members, our diligent staff, and incredibly generous donors. Each day I witness overwhelming compassion and warmth of heart that makes Ronald McDonald House more than a building, but a warm and caring place that families with kids at San Francisco hospitals can call home. 2016 was a year of transi on and success for RMH‐SF. We saw our first full year of opera on at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, we grew our capacity to serve, and we strengthened our programs and services and fine‐tuned our opera ons, in collabora on with our close partners in departments throughout the Hospital. By the end of 2016, RMH‐SF and the Hospital realized how much more we are now offering families as we work together. Our programs within the Hospitals evolved in 2016 and grew to accommodate an increasing demand. Our volunteers were able to serve meals during our Family Support Dinners, on a bi‐weekly basis at UCSF Benioff, and a monthly basis at Oakland Benioff Children’s Hospital. Over the course of the year, we served a total of 13,273 healthy and nutri ous meals in an environment conducive to support. Our hard‐working and compassionate volunteers of the Child Bedside Program offered families at UCSF Benioff Hospital a smiling face and listening ear. All this while bringing a cart with refreshing beverages and snacks to family members who need to be close by their child throughout the day and o en into the evening hours. The journeys and paths to helping families at RMH‐SF have many different approaches. In June, our volunteers, board members and donors met on the golf course to raise funds and awareness for RMH‐SF at the 2016 RMH‐SF Patrick Marleau Golf Classic. While some of our supporters held events like the Ram Racing Hot Chocolate Run, others, like our incredible corporate partner Genentech, held an eagerly an cipated online auc on among employees. Many of you support RMH‐SF because you understand the engulfing emo ons that take over parents when their child is sick. The sense of uncertainty and helplessness can seem unbearable. You give your me and resources because your heart is filled with compassion. Throughout the year I had the pleasure to welcome you to the House and o en joined you when your group is making dinner for the families, and I read your suppor ve and touching comments, sent with your check. The connec on shared by our RMH community of donors, volunteers, staff and partners, is the compassionate heart and joy found in extending hope and support to those who families who are facing very difficult days. From both of our Houses—on Sco Street and inside UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital—we offer lodging and suppor ve programs in a con nuum of care. But more importantly, RMH successfully lightens the burden of families because our friends and donors give generously of their resources, me and of their heart. So while I can proudly cite that 887 families have called us home for over 6,002 days in 2016, the true success of RMH is the collec ve compassion that connects donors, volunteers and families together. Thank you for being part of our success and I encourage you to con nue with us as we help ensure that families with cri cally ill children are well supported, now and into the future. With gra tude, David Hartman Interim Execu ve Director
FAMILY STORY KODI, LAYLA AND MADILYNN Shortly after our honeymoon, my husband and I found out the biggest news of our lives—we were expecting girl triplets. At the same time, we also discovered the triplets were monochorionic/triamniotic (meaning one placenta and three amniotic sacs), which was considered a high‐risk pregnancy. Everything was going great un l I was admi ed to UCSF for mild preeclampsia. On February 1, 2016 I woke up feeling fine but my blood pressure was double the normal numbers. The doctors decided to deliver the girls that day via C‐sec on at 31 weeks. I stayed in the hospital for four days recovering then a er I was discharged, we stayed on the couches in the Intensive Care Nursery (ICN). A week later, the triplets were relocated to a different part of the ICN. I soon realized firsthand that major abdominal surgery and sleeping on a hard couch were not a good combina on.
Enter Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco A er about a week, a hospital social worker helped us get into the Ronald McDonald House on Sco Street. Moving to that house helped us tremendously. I was able to recover in a comfortable bed and they provided everything we needed. They were our home away from home. When our youngest baby was ready to be discharged from the hospital, the House staff bought two pack‐and‐plays for us to use. We enjoyed great meals and made friends. It was a bi ersweet experience; I was happy to go home with our healthy children but we were also leaving our temporary home. I miss living at the Ronald McDonald House but I don’t miss the reason why we were there. I truly appreciate everything that the Ronald McDonald House did for us.
“The Ronald McDonald House is a great contributor to the parent’s and child’s quality of life in their time of need.” ‐ Kira Swan, mom of Kodi, Layla, and Madilynn
VOLUNTEERS MAKE IT HAPPEN AT THE HOUSE Corporate groups, organiza ons, schools, and individuals generously provide convenient meals at no cost to our families. Family meals help to reduce stress in many ways: saving money, reducing valuable travel me, and providing the opportunity to enjoy comfort food together outside of the hospital environment. Without our volunteers, our work would not be possible.

DONORS SPOTLIGHT Third‐Party Fundraiser—7th ATI Charity Golf Classic For the third year in a row, Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco was the proud beneficiary of the funds raised at ATI’s Charity Golf Classic. American Technologies, Inc. employees and vendors from Northern and Southern California came out to “tee off for a worthy cause” at the spectacular forest greens of San Francisco’s Presidio Golf Course. Golfers enjoyed several fun on‐course ac vi es such as the NFL bean bag toss sta on and Harley Davidson’s hole‐in‐one motorcycle giveaway. The tournament generously raised $18,860 for Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco. We are thrilled and grateful to have this partnership with ATI. Thank you to everyone at ATI who made this such a successful event!
Genentech Gives Back In 2016, Genentech employees generously donated $121,000 through their Genentech Gives Back Week. Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco has been a beneficiary of Genentech’s philanthropic support and volunteerism for the past seven years. Since 2011, Genentech’s corporate giving, match programs, and employee giving programs have donated over $220,000 in gi s to Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco. These gi s support our lodging programs, as well as the Child’s Bedside Program and other in‐hospital programs thereby making a real difference in the lives of families caring for their children. Genentech employees have generously given their me in meaningful ways; they have decorated our houses during the holidays, helped cook meals for our families, and donated gi s for those in our care. Genentech’s corporate giving and volunteer programs have been an integral and valued part of Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco. Genentech’s support enables us to provide a place where families know that they are loved and supported, and are able to connect with others going through similar hardships. During the holidays, Genentech’s NextGen gathered employees to help assemble over 150 care packages for our Ronald McDonald House families. The care packages included: snacks/treats, ssues, toothbrushes, children’s books & toys, and li le notes of encouragement.
Are you looking for a way to give back to RMH‐SF? Hos ng a third‐party fundraiser is a fun way to share the mission of hope and togetherness for the families at our House. Whether you are an individual, group of friends, community group, school, or company, your support can make a powerful impact for RMH‐SF. Every dollar raised helps us provide our guest families with a comfortable bed, warm meal, and a place of comfort and hope. We will work with you to provide support along the way.

Donor Apprecia on Party at Macy’s Flower Show In March of 2016, Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco partnered with Macy’s to host a Donor Apprecia on Evening at the annual Macy’s Flower Show in Union Square. Long me and new friends joined us for a deligh ul evening of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and a professional floral arrangement presenta on. Our generous donors have provided the me and monetary support necessary to keep our programs running. Coming off of a successful five‐year campaign which yielded a brand new Ronald McDonald House within UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Mission Bay, we hosted an evening of gra tude that only begins to reflect the apprecia on we have for our generous donors. We are grateful and humbled by our donors’ con nued support.
SPOTLIGHT ON OUR HOSPITAL PARTNERS:
UCSF BENIOFF CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Families come to San Francisco for medical care because we have among the greatest pediatric specialists and subspecialists in the world, working in a world‐class ins tu on at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. From the doctors and nurses to the social workers, child life services, maintenance, food service and administra on, we work shoulder‐to‐shoulder with them all. We could not provide the care and support to our families without the help of the incredible staff at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital.
Conversa ons on Children’s Health Forum Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco had the pleasure of collabora ng with UCSF to produce ‐ Conversa ons on Children’s Health. This event was developed as a part of a new plan for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, designed to inform and engage members of the community. Panelists Tim Kelly, MD (RMH‐SF Board of Directors), Heather Fullerton, MD, and Seth Bokser, MD, MPH each shared compelling stories about the young pa ents they serve. They provided powerful insight regarding the needs of their pa ents as well as their families, and shared how Ronald McDonald House of San Francisco has helped alleviate many of the struggles these families face. The Conversa on on Children’s Health event included the Ronald McDonald House Advisory Council, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals donors and prospects, and members of the Bay Area Community.
“We realized fast that it was the small things that made the difference: a bed to sleep in, to be able to do laundry, a bathroom to ourselves, to have home‐cooked meals, even a safe place to park our car. Those are just some of the many things the Ronald McDonald House did for my family and me. We honestly couldn't thank you guys enough. You are all amazing people!”

“We le our home in Chowchilla driving nearly 3 hours without packing any clothes and only $10 le in my pocket. Ronald McDonald House welcomed us with open arms at 2:00 AM in the morning. HOW WE DO IT CORE PROGRAMS Since 1989, RMH‐SF has provided a home away from home at no cost for families with cri cally ill children receiving treatment at a San Francisco medical facility. Today our programs include our Lodging Program at two Ronald McDonald Houses, the Child’s Bedside Program, Parent Support Events, and suppor ve services, as part of a con nuum of care. Each program aims to create a comfor ng space for families to rest, rejuvenate, and connect with other families facing similar crises.
LODGING PROGRAM The RMH‐SF Lodging Program provides home‐cooked meals and lodging for families at our two Houses ‐ our original 10‐room House on Sco Street and our 11‐room House inside UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay.
CHILD’S BEDSIDE PROGRAM Many families don't want to leave their cri cally ill child's bedside and maintain an around‐the‐clock vigil in their child’s hospital room. O en, these parents are exhausted, depleted, and barely have me to remember to grab something to eat or drink. But these families need a break‐‐even a short one‐‐from the stress and isola on of the hospital se ng. In response to the taxing and emo onal burdens of caring for a cri cally ill child, RMH launched the Child’s Bedside Program. The Child’s Bedside Program is offered at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay where our trained volunteers visit young pa ents and their families in the hospital, bringing complimentary beverages, snacks, supplies and a listening ear and a caring heart. For some families, the Child’s Bedside Program is not only the highlight of their day, but an important factor in keeping them rejuvenated so that they can par cipate in medical care decisions with their doctor.
“We truly appreciated the Child’s Bedside Program during our me at the hospital. The short breaks from the stress and worry, and especially the coffee, kept us going and gave us strength.” ‐ The Smith Family
HOW WE DO IT PARENT SUPPORT EVENTS Parent Support Events were developed in collabora on with UCSF’s Benioff’s Family Advisory Council to help parents of cri cally ill children get to know each other and build a suppor ve community within the hospital. These peer support events include a simple meal and suppor ve conversa on, during which RMH‐SF and UCSF staff, including social workers and child life specialists, are available to assist parents. Each event, at no cost to families, aims to create a safe space for families to rest, rejuvenate, and connect with other families facing similar crises.
