Families are the heart of our House. Since opening in 2011, Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte has provided a safe, loving home-awayfrom-home for over 5,000 families. Through the support, and heart, of loyal donors, foundations, corporations, volunteers and friends, these 5,000 families were able to keep close to their loved one while they received treatment at an area medical facility.

I am always thanked for my volunteer contributions and welcomed back… makes me really feel like a part of the RMH of Charlotte family!”

A House with Heart: Leadership Message It’s incredible to believe that we have served families at our Charlotte House for more than eight years now. This community has embraced the mission of the Ronald McDonald House in ways that continue to amaze and humble us while we carry out this important work for families. Nestled closely between our two partner children’s hospitals, we open our doors and welcome families from far and wide so that they can focus on the care and needs of their children. 2019 celebrated triumphs and transitions. The House was home to more than 524 families, who spent a collective 8,200 nights in our trusted care. We also witnessed countless numbers of volunteers giving so generously of their time and talents. Volunteers cleaned, cooked, answered phones, organized House supply inventory and more, all for a combined 17,000+ hours of time throughout the year. We welcomed new staff to the team, while we said goodbye to our founding CEO, Mona Johnson-Gibson, after 12 years of dedicated service. In these pages, we celebrate all things with HEART. From the volunteers who SERVE tirelessly to the donors and community partners who GIVE so generously, all these things come together so that our families can LIVE with HEART in the House that Love Built. The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte is truly a testament to what can happen when HEARTS beat and unite for a common purpose. To those who continue to commit themselves to our mission, who generously give their resources and energy, and who embody the spirit of teamwork, we say thank you. We are honored to champion this cause in our beautiful community. Sincerely,

Denise Cubbedge CEO

Live with Heart: A Long Journey Imagine traveling over 3,000 miles away from the only home you have ever known to a whole new world. When you arrive to that new world, imagine not knowing the language, the faces or even how to use modern-day conveniences such as a microwave. Imagine trusting those new faces around you as you undergo major surgery. Now imagine going through all of this as a young preteen. In early December 2019, shy and quiet Carolina arrived in Charlotte with her mother after they traveled from Honduras for Carolina’s critical spinal surgery; a surgery that would not only save her ability 6

Carolina to walk, but also allow her to remain independent and pain-free. Carolina’s surgery would require several weeks of follow up appointments, meaning that Carolina and her mother would need to stay in Charlotte. Through the help of Carolina’s doctors and the Community Health Partnership Honduras, Carolina and her mother were referred to the Ronald McDonald House. Over the course of five weeks, Carolina and her mother called our House their home-awayfrom-home: they lived with heart. After surgery with the help of

her physical therapists, Carolina gained strength in her legs and was eventually able to leave her wheelchair for a few hours a day to practice walking with her crutches and braces! “Thank you for five weeks of giving us a home, feeding and caring for us. You have provided us with an extraordinary experience and a lifetime of memories. You went out of your way to show countless acts of kindness. Thank you for providing everything we needed, enabling us to focus on Carolina’s surgery and recovery.” Jennifer Smith, Director of Community Health Partnership Honduras

Thank you to the RMH of Charlotte and all the volunteers. Thank you for our room and giving us a home in Charlotte. Thank you for all my presents: the cookies, the meals, and the wonderful Christmas; and for so many memories. ” - Carolina 7

FEATURED PARTNER

BUILT to Give with Heart CarolinaBUILT, a design and construction industry networking organization, was created around five core values: Leadership, Relationship, Knowledge, Trust and Service. BUILT membership prides itself on being service-oriented, both to one another and to the community. In 2018, BUILT membership voted on and then designated RMH of Charlotte as its beneficiary charity at their annual Pinehurst Golf Tournament. Since then, the relationship has grown to give members an even more of a hands-on approach to their philanthropy. In the Fall of 2019, BUILT participated in one of the first House Corporate Takeover partnership experiences. Members “took-over” the House by cooking a weekday breakfast for families, helped the House Operations team clean and organize storage rooms, and also donated Wish List products such as cleaning supplies and pantry items. “The House Corporate Takeover was one of the most fun and fulfilling events we’ve ever done,” stated Mike Iosue, Regional Business Development Manager, Jordan & Skala Engineers. “Every person walked out of the House filled with a sense of pride and purpose. You can’t help but WANT to come back! It’s the amazing House, the If you’ve never incredible staff, the families, and the purpose been to the behind it all. RMH of Charlotte is just an all-around House, I urge outstanding group.”

For more information about how you can Give with Heart like BUILT and participate in our Corporate Takeover or Adopt-A-Room programs, visit our website: R M H O F C H A R LOT T E .O R G 8

BUILT members were so inspired by the time they spent at the House volunteering and learning more about the mission, that they set a goal to raise enough funds to Adopt-A-Room for an entire year. Through the dedication of the BUILT leadership team and golf tournament leads, their goal of adopting a room was reached. A surprise reveal was made at the BUILT holiday party and they presented the House with a check to adopt a guest room… something they now look forward to doing every year!

you to make the time. It will change your life when you see behind the scenes how amazing it is.” - Mike Iosue, CarolinaBUILT 9

Welcoming a new child is an exciting and life-changing experience, but the addition of twins is a whole different ball game. And Jenn and Liz Godwin were ready to step up to the plate. Already blessed with a daughter, Harlowe, the Godwins were thrilled to be expecting twin boys. They set-up their bedroom, purchased diapers, and planned as best they could for the unique energy that twins would bring to their household. Then, the unexpected happened. Heath and Cohen were born in May 2017 at just 29 weeks. Entirely too early and too little, the boys were immediately checked in to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at one of our local children’s hospitals to begin their journey home. They slowly progressed through all stages of development, gained weight, and were eventually transferred to the Progressive Unit. Things were looking up! Unfortunately, right before the twins were scheduled to checkout, the Godwins received difficult news. The boys needed surgery, which required them to return to the NICU for continued specialized care and monitoring. The ups and downs of the boys’ treatment was tough on the family, 12

especially living 45 minutes away and continuing to care for their daughter. Luckily, Jenn, Liz and even Harlowe were able to call our House their home that Spring. All three months that the boys were cared for in the hospital, the Godwin family Lived with Heart at our House.

“Being close to the NICU and being able to easily go back and forth [from the House to the hospital] was really life changing,” shares Jenn. “I felt like we were making important decisions for our twins all day long. Being able to come back to the House and have many of our needs already met was life giving.” Now three years old, Heath and Cohen are thriving and very active, often chasing adoringly after their older sister!

The staff at the House always asked about our children. They went out of their way to ensure that all our kids were acknowledged, including our oldest daughter, not just our twins.”

FEATURED VOLUNTEERS The LaPata Family

Families Serving Families Families are at the center of the RMH mission. The House cares for and provides a home-away-fromhome for the entire family. That’s why we weren’t surprised when the LaPata Family made it their mission to Serve with Heart! In 2016, Mary LaPata was introduced to the House by a friend. She immediately began serving as a House Operations Volunteer and she hasn’t stopped since. But she did recruit a few more volunteers along the way: her children! Mary and her oldest children, twins, Ava and Dominic, first began volunteering at House events. They served sweet tea at the Charlotte PRIDE festival to raise money, they baked cookies and made breakfast for guests, and they even helped 14

families pick out and wrap gifts during the House’s Holiday Shop. “A favorite memory of volunteering at RMH is the Christmas boutique,” stated Mary. “I always enjoy the interaction with guest parents. It is incredible to see the parents relax and enjoy themselves during a difficult time.” This past year, both Ava and Dominic were selected to be members of the Teen Volunteer Board, which organizes fundraising projects to benefit the House and hosts fun activities for the families. A family, volunteer, donor and staff favorite, the TVB’s Holiday House had a Polar Express theme last year. Dominic shared, “I really enjoyed being able to dress up as the train conductor and interact with the families.”

ADOPT-A-ROOM SUPPORTERS The generosity of Adopt-A-Room donors plays a critical role in helping fulfill our mission. It costs approximately $142 to host a family for one night. While families are encouraged to make a $15/night donation, only about 30% can afford this amount due to mounting medical bills and travel costs. An annual Adopt-A-Room donation of $5,475 covers a year’s worth of stays for families in need. CarolinaBUILT LLC Continental Tire of the Americas, LLC Michael & Mary Lou Daly John & Kathy Hairston

My favorite part of volunteering is knowing whatever I do is appreciated. Being a small part of a family’s journey through a child’s illness is important to me.” - Mary LaPata

The Lawry Family

Coming back [from the hospital] to RMH and doing a load of laundry, playing with my 4-year-old, or using the blender in the common kitchen for my son’s liquid diet, these little tasks kept me grounded.” - Meagan Lawry

The Godwin Family

At Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, they meet you where you are. Hungry? They feed you. Need to cry? They listen. Need to sleep? They have that. When you make what feels like one hundred decisions a day about your child’s medical care, it’s life giving to walk into a place where they expect nothing of you.” - Jenn Godwin
