ANNUAL REPORT Eastern Wisconsin
OUR MISSION: TO KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER AND PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN
FOR 35 YEARS ... the House has been more than just a place to stay. We offer families therapeutic programming, a comprehensive meal program, comfortable community spaces, and so much more. A team of over 550 volunteers and a
small, dedicated staff are always ready to do whatever it takes to make a family’s stay a little easier. Living in a community, side-by-side, families form friendships and support one another through difficult times.
RMHC Eastern Wisconsin opened its doors in 1984 with just 25 guest rooms, several common spaces, and two kitchens. Two expansions, hundreds of volunteers, 45 additional guest rooms, and seven additional kitchens later, we are excited to be celebrating our 35th Anniversary in 2019. The last 35 years have brought along many changes, but our mission remains the same: to keep families together and promote the health and well-being of children.
WELCOME TO OUR HOUSE ANN PETRIE, PRESIDENT/CEO DAN GEIGLER, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
We have provided more than 45,000 family stays over the last 35 years to families that needed our unique services. The House is so much more than a bed, a shower, and a hot meal. Our therapeutic programming, robust healthy meal program, and community of support make our Ronald McDonald House® a safe, comfortable space for families to seek respite. In 2019, we will continue to identify how our organization can support needs in our community – just as our founding members did almost 40 years ago. Our partnership with the Miles of Smiles Mobile Dental Clinic, our Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and some exciting new endeavors are allowing us to expand our reach like never before. We are truly honored and grateful for the support and generosity we’ve received over the past 35 years…and we can’t wait to see what the next 35 years will bring.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT Since 2014, Kohl’s has supported RMHC Eastern Wisconsin’s commitment to serving families with donations totaling nearly $600,000. Funding has enhanced our guest families’ experiences in many ways. Our Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart program rolls through the halls at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and provides snacks and small give-away packages with items to keep children and their families busy throughout their hospital stay. Engaging art, theatre, and music programming delights our families several times each month with community partners like Kohl’s Wild Theater and RMHC Visiting Artist programs. Additionally, our Expressive Therapies program provides Art, Music, and Dance/Movement Therapy to children and their families. Kohl’s associates generously share their time year-round - making meals, deep cleaning kitchens, and even getting our whole House in the holiday spirit each December. “We are proud to continue our partnership to ensure everyone has access to impactful resources during difficult times,” said Jen Johnson, Kohl’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications. “We are inspired by the work Ronald McDonald House does each day to keep families together and create a community of support for them when they need it most.”
1,676 EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES PARTICIPANTS IN 2018 Art, Music, and Dance/Movement Therapies provide creative ways to heal and process feelings.
$26,500 FROM KOHL’S VOLUNTEERS When 5 or more Kohl’s associates volunteer for 3 or more hours, RMHC gets $500! We received $26,500 in 2018 from the Kohl’s Volunteer Program.

AJA’S FAMILY SHARES THEIR STORY THE PHAN FAMILY
Aja was a typical high school freshman battling finals, preparing for the upcoming soccer season, when her family noticed she was more tired than usual with bruises appearing after only the slightest bump. A trip to their doctor revealed that Aja’s blood wasn’t clotting and within hours they were sent directly to the hospital for more testing. Two bone marrow biopsies and less than a week later, Aja was diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia and would need a transplant. Though they are at a better place now, the Phans shudder to think how they could have sought treatment for Aja without the help of RMHC. Aja was one of the sickest patients the team in Milwaukee had ever treated with this transplant. Yet 55 days post-transplant, she shocked everyone as she was discharged from the hospital and headed back to RMHC. Several months later you wouldn’t even recognize the sweet girl with the big smile as the same Aja whose mom would give her morphine just to make the walk to appointments. Among the many teenagers roaming the Ronald McDonald House, setting aside their medical experiences and enjoying time together, Aja has found forever friends. Sheila has found a community of parents who know the struggle of worrying over every moment of their child’s day while trying to let them “just be kids.” 10
