2019 ANNUAL REPORT Ronald McDonald House CharitiesÂŽ of Eastern Wisconsin, Inc.

SINCE 1984 … the House has been more than just a place to stay. We offer families therapeutic programming, a comprehensive meal program, comfortable community spaces, and so much more. A team of over 550 volunteers and a dedicated staff are always ready to do whatever it takes to make a family’s stay a little easier. Living in a community, side-by-side, families form friendships and support one another through difficult times.

OUR MISSION TO KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER AND PROMOTE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN

CREATING CONNECTIONS COMMUNITY

CORE VALUES

COMPASSIONATE CARE COMMUNICATION

OUR VISION TO BE AN INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY WHERE ALL CHILDREN FACING HEALTHCARE NEEDS AND THEIR FAMILIES BENEFIT FROM OUR COMPASSIONATE SUPPORT

Creating Connections: We create connections with our friends of the House, including our donors and volunteers. Our guest families create meaningful connections with each other – whether engaging in Art Therapy, enjoying family dinner made by our volunteer groups, or relaxing in the Secret Garden. We know the healing power of togetherness and believe every family deserves a supportive environment.

WELCOME TO OUR HOUSE ANN PETRIE, PRESIDENT/CEO TODD JONES, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Over the past 36 years, RMHC® Eastern Wisconsin has provided a place to call home for more than 48,000 families. Like the very foundation of this House that Love Built, our commitment to keeping families together while their child receives medical treatment far from home remains steadfast. We honor this by living the following Core Values – for those we work with, serve, and inspire:

Communication: Open, honest, and thoughtful communication with our supporters, community, guest families, partner hospitals, and each other is a part of our everyday lives. Community: Just as our guest families experience a sense of community among each other, RMHC Eastern WI is committed to positively impacting our community through our partnership with the Ascension Smart Smiles Program, our Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart at Children’s Wisconsin, and new projects being planned. All of this and more is made possible through the dedication of our 550 volunteers, our 31 full- and part-time staff, and the generosity of our friends and our community. With gratitude,

Compassionate Care: Whether it’s through therapeutic programming, our healthy meal program, a trip to the Magic Room for a child who has reached a medical milestone, or simply a warm, friendly smile, we provide a sense of comfort and care for our guest families and each other. DONOR SPOTLIGHT The Ladish Company Foundation has been making a difference in our local community since it was established by the company’s founders in 1952. Supporting numerous nonprofits in Southeastern WI, the Foundation focuses primarily on education and healthcare. The Foundation’s belief in our mission for nearly 30 years has helped support general House operations and two House expansions with donations totaling over $500,000. Our partnership is built on trust and a shared commitment to making sure that each family that calls our House home has everything they need - even if it’s an extra special touch! Several years ago, we had a big idea that needed a little help and the Ladish Company Foundation was there once again to assist! Thanks to their support, each guest family now receives their own plush version of our House therapy dog, McNugget. These mini-McNuggets help provide our youngest guests with a furry friend to help them get through some pretty tough days. “The Ladish Company Foundation has supported Ronald McDonald House Charities® Eastern Wisconsin for many years because we believe in the mission and have always been impressed with the stewardship and commitment of those who manage the House. The Ronald McDonald House mission aligns with our focus and is certainly deserving of our support. We are looking forward to a productive future with the House as we explore other opportunities to work together.” – Wayne Larsen, Trustee We are grateful that our partnership with the Ladish Company Foundation allows us to continue our mission to keep families together and promote the health and well-being of children. CORTNEY & GRACE

“It is so empowering for Grace to have a voice in her treatment. This is a kid who, a year and a half ago, wouldn’t make eye contact with her doctors, refused to tell us how she was feeling, or told us she didn’t want to talk about it. Now for her to say she may need a treatment - she’s prepared to speak up. That empowerment and part of this change we have seen in Grace is not from treatment, it’s from being here, in this House, with people who understand what she’s going through.”

* $128.14 OUR ACTUAL COST PER NIGHT *Includes in-kind donations

Our families are never required to make a financial contribution towards their stay. We suggest a $20 per night donation. In 2019, 27% of our families were able to make a contribution.

HOUSE PROGRAMS & WHY THEY MATTER Our mission is about so much more than the bricks and mortar of our 70 guest-room House. It is about identifying and providing therapeutic programming, healthy meals and clean comfortable living spaces for the entire family to enjoy. Seventeen-year-old Maddie and her family stayed at RMHC Eastern Wisconsin for nearly a year. Art Therapy was a favorite pastime, and Maddie’s love for drawing quickly filled the halls of the House. She even won an RMHC® Global drawing competition – her art was showcased on McDonald’s Happy Meal boxes nationwide in October 2019.

EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES Art, music and dance movement therapists provide group sessions at the House several times each week to help address the emotional well-being of our guests. In 2019, 1,631 children and parents participated in 191 therapeutic sessions. These programs are funded by a grant through Kohl’s®. 8

FAMILY MEAL PROGRAM Families are invited to enjoy daily family meals, Lunch-2-Go and other healthy food initiatives. In 2019, 294 teams of community volunteers provided 649 complimentary dinners, brunches, snacks and Lunches-2-Go. These programs provide RMHC Eastern WI families healthy meal choices, and help reduce their financial burdens. Program funded in part by a grant from Northwestern Mutual Foundation and other generous partners.

FAMILY GUEST ROOMS We have 70 guest rooms to provide families with comfortable accommodations and keep them together near area hospitals for as long as their children are receiving treatment. Program funded by individuals, corporations, foundations, fundraising efforts and McDonald’s donation boxes.

RMHC GLOBAL AT A GLANCE ®

PET THERAPY PROGRAM Pet Therapy promotes social interaction and emotional support through visits with specially trained dogs and their handlers. In 2019, we hosted 186 hours of Pet Therapy visits, as well as 125 additional hours from our certified House therapy dog, McNugget. Therapy certification for McNugget is funded through a grant from The Jeanie Marie Fund.

OUR mCDONALD’S PARTNERSHIP As RMHC’s Founding Mission Partner, McDonald’s provides support through in-store fundraising, raising awareness about our mission, and volunteering by McDonald’s employees. Every year, a portion of our annual operating costs are funded through the donation boxes located at area McDonald’s restaurants, as well as other fundraising efforts, including Give a Hand and RMHC 365. The remainder of our annual operating income is provided by generous individuals and corporate donors. RMHC Eastern Wisconsin 2019 Annual Report l RMHC-EasternWI.org

THE PEARSON FAMILY SHARES THEIR STORY

On November 2, 2011, Lindsey and Rob Pearson welcomed their son Miles into the world. Arriving three months early, Miles spent the first weeks of his life at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin. A seemingly harmless bump on Miles’ belly turned out to be necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a bacterial infection in the wall of the intestine. His intestine had ruptured and his little body had become septic. The only chance Miles had for survival was to be airlifted to Children’s Wisconsin. Reliant on a breathing machine (that had never been used on an infant before inflight), there was great uncertainty whether Miles would even survive the flight. Miles did survive, and he became one of the first infants to be treated with a technique that enabled surgeons to keep his incision open so they could clean out the sepsis every two to three days while protecting him from further infection. Over the next three months, the House became the Pearson Family’s home. Today, Miles is happy, healthy, and fully aware of the impact RMHC had on his family. Lindsey describes him as witty, funny, giving, kind, and genuine – anyone who interacts with him is touched in some way. He has an old soul that so many are drawn to. In a recent progress report from school, Miles’ teacher shared that he is kind-hearted and helpful, and that he puts a smile on her face every day. 10

Lindsey reflects on her long nights at the House: “The prayers I would say at night, the thoughts of what he was going to be like if he did survive - all these things happened here. I cried here. I laughed here. We celebrated our first Christmas being parents in this home.”
