h

ere in Chicago, we never know what will grab our attention faster in February – the cold weather, or the excitement of Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is probably one of nicest holidays of the season. Besides the fact that you are able to give a present and tell your dear one how much you enjoy your time together, there are so many other possibilities and ways to keep yourself entertained this time of year. After all, the cold weather has given us the opportunity to step out of our comfort zone and not be afraid of it. We can enjoy limitless possibilities where to eat, drink and even take pleasure in that cup of hot chocolate in a nice warm place when it is freezing outside. In this issue, we advise on the best places to travel so you can enjoy all the different parts of the globe. This time, Michael Oz happily transports you to beautiful Spain to enjoy exquisite Spanish-inspired delicatessens and worldclass wines native to this incredible country. Also joining us this issue is young Russian-speaking interpreter, Leon Oks, mastermind of iCanvas (Art) in Morton Grove. Lastly, our new contributor, Serge Rakhlin, chairman of the foreignlanguage film committee of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, talks one-on-one with Golden Globe winner, Sylvester Stallone about his revived role as Rocky Balboa. Liza Kaymin, New York’s prominent Russian TV news anchor, graces our cover this month. Liza is a popular and well-respected Journalist, TV Host and Actress. Read more about her in our exclusive interview by Alexander Rozbam on pg 30. So this month, don’t let the cold weather stop you from trying new things. We have many great spots where and how you can enjoy your Valentine’s Day, and the rest of the month. And don’t forget to put on your dance shoes! Features Editor, Monica Dolecka, shares important health and social benefits of ballroom dance, and why ballroom dance is a great routine to better health. Cheers, ANNA & VLAD

DEAR FRIENDS:

Each year around this time, I remind myself how lucky I am to have a healthy family, a comfortable home, a job that I love, and people around me who make each day’s challenges a bit easier to face. I am deeply thankful and don’t take anything for granted. I also recognize there are far too many people in this country and around the world whose lives are a daily struggle for survival. My challenges cannot possibly be compared to theirs. Let us take this season to not only give thanks for what we have, but to find in ourselves a heightened level of compassion for those less fortunate, and to act on it. From our Pascal pour Elle family to yours, have a wonderful, healthy and happy holiday season, and a new year in which we all do our part to make the world a better place.

“chicago a cappella” и Чикагский шекспировский театр: “Shakespeare a capella”.

17–21 февраля. oxford playhouse (великобритания): “санчо: акт памяти” (“Sancho: an Act of Remembrance”).

Forced Entertainment (Великобритания): “(IN) Complete Works: Table Top Shakespeare”.

Rockefeller Memorial Chapel: “Музыка во времена Шекспира”.

inteRview with SYlVeSTeR STalloNe RECENTLY WINNING THE 2016 GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD FOR “BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE” FOR HIS ROLE AS “ROCKY BALBOA” IN THE FILM CREED, SYLVESTER STALLONE HAS ALSO BEEN NOMINATED FOR AN OSCAR. DID You aT aNY PoINT IN THe laST 15 oR 20 YeaRS THINk You WoulD INHaBIT THIS CHaRaCTeR aGaIN? HoW DID THIS WHole THING CoMe ToGeTHeR?

Well, after Rocky Five, I was kind of sad how that turned out and I made it my life’s quest to do just one more. And it’s not easy for a sixty year old boxer to get financing (Stallone is 69 years old now – S.R.), who is following a fifteen year old film that wasn’t as successful, meaning Rocky Five. So when that was done and complete, I thought that was it. We had a mission accomplished and I was happy about it and I put it to rest and thought this is the highlight of my career. Rocky is done and done well. And then this fellow came in from Oakland who had ambition who wasn’t even born until after Rocky Four [Laughs]. And he knew the movies better than me and I thought I can’t do this because what he was asking was to go into

14

a very dark place, at least for Rocky, and it was something I wasn’t familiar with. So I said, I don’t think I can do justice to your screenplay. Then he does Fruitvale Station and wins award to award and this is what he wants to do and is being offered all sorts of wonderful jobs by the studios. Then he wants to do Creed. So I realized that his heart was really into this as much as mine when I was 29 years old doing the first [movie]. So my wife goes, don’t be such a coward and I went. Well maybe someone else can get sick and I will help them, [Laughs] and I said, I just don’t want to know if people want to see Rocky like that. And that’s when it dawned on me. I said it’s not about Rocky, it’s about “Creed”, the new character, and I am there supporting him. And once I made that adjustment I went, oh right, it’s not Rocky, it’s about this young man’s journey. And my journey is pretty much over. And then I was really very grateful to him.

So THIS TIMe You aRe oN THe oTHeR SIDe oF THe RoPeS. HoW MuCH DID You eNJoY THaT aND WeRe You aT aNY TIMe WISHING You CoulD PuT oN THe GloVeS?

Yes. It’s true. It’s tough to take the gloves off mentally, but your body goes: don’t do that anyway, [laughs] don’t do that anymore. So yes, I was very excited when I saw that what Michael B. Jordan doing was extraordinary and I think he trained harder than I had ever trained and he performed really well. Quite often, those fights, especially the couple ones in the gym, got out of hand and they were real. I realized that he had accepted the fighter’s mentality. But being behind the ropes…I don’t enjoy it anymore. I just am grateful and try to be as real as I can in this role. [I thought] You are his father now, you are his protector, and then it became wonderful. RoCkY’S MaNTRa IS – oNe STeP

aT a TIMe, oNe PuNCH aT a TIMe, oNe RouND aT a TIMe. BuT WHaT IS SYlVeSTeR STalloNe’S MaNTRa IN lIFe?

[Laughs] Oh my God! Well, let’s say it’s more like ten steps at a time and then nine of them are wrong, so it’s hard to say what my mantra is, but try not to be afraid of anything. Just try to do things now in acting or writing, or directing that you are afraid of, that are different. Cause I was very afraid of this, very afraid and I postponed it for two years and then I said, you know, why am I afraid and then something happened. So my thing is: “without fear.”

but that can turn into warfare, [laughs]. It’s just too much. But I think, especially in my film career, that I started out a certain way and something presented itself that I was on fence about. But it was the birth of a different kind of action film and it was almost an accident. I realized First Blood was something that I had never seen before; the character spoke visually for the whole movie and was just a different kind of character. And next thing I know, I am kind of intrigued by this. I didn’t do

all oVeR THe WoRlD, PeoPle THINk You aRe RoCkY oR RaMBo. BuT You aRe So MuCH MoRe THaN THaT. You WRITe aND DIReCT aND You aRe aN aMaZING PaINTeR. CaN You PleaSe Talk aBouT THIS oTHeR aSPeCT oF YouR lIFe?

I was somewhat dyslexic as a kid, so school work and reading was very difficult. And back then, they didn’t know the word dyslexic; they just thought you were a little dumb [laughs]. And so I started painting and painting led into writing because I said if I could paint the image when I think about a story, then I can’t write it until I can see it. So I would paint Rocky first and then write the screenplay because then I knew what he looked like, instead of just writing: the man is fighting. I don’t know what to say – does he have blonde hair and blue eyes, this or that? So it all sort of came as a child, but I never thought I would end up doing it for a living at all. [In Life], don’t just be an actor. Just try everything until you have exhausted all your artistic abilities and just keep going without fear. Just don’t be afraid to fail. lookING BaCk oN YouR lIFe FRoM THIS PoINT, WHaT WoulD You HaVe DoNe DIFFeReNTlY, BoTH IN YouR CaReeR aND IN YouR lIFe?

If we could all rewrite our life, my God! You know, unfortunately, we are not born with wisdom and wisdom usually comes with mistakes and you go okay, now I know [laughs].That sort of thing. So, I would have approached my private relationships totally different and looked for less competitive circumstances. Sometimes you get married and you are with someone where you go: oh that’s a very exciting dynamic,

IT’S NOT ROCKY, IT’S ABOUT THIS YOUNG MAN’S JOURNEY. AND MY JOURNEY IS PRETTY MUCH OVER. AND THEN I WAS REALLY VERY GRATEFUL TO HIM enough dramatic stuff, so I kind of started to go with this, and it’s almost finished now. It’s a kind of a twenty year period of these interesting action films that represented the 80s and 90s that went away. It’s not being done anymore. And I just became kind of

captivated. If I have just one kind of regret, I wish that I had been maybe a little bit more versatile and challenged myself in different areas. You MeNTIoNeD THaT aDoNIS BeCoMeS lIke RoCkY’S CHIlD. So CaN You PleaSe Talk aBouT loVe IN GeNeRal aND THe loVe You HaVe FoR YouR CHIlDReN?

Well, yeah it is. Love has the ability to take you to heaven and unfortunately take you to hell at the same time. Yet it’s the one thing I think is a necessary component to make life worthwhile and worth living. It might not even be a person, but love of whatever you are doing and something that just consumes you. And children… it’s very complicated, at least with the way I have had children, it’s been quite a journey. And I have learned that you are so educated in some ways and so foolish in others because you try to be the best parent you can and I find myself really paying attention to my children now and just letting them grow on their own and not be so dominating. It’s wonderful because I learned, especially when you have three daughters, you never win, ever [laughs]. So I surrender and I raised this flag like I surrender and my life has been so joyous. They go, I love you daddy… and I go, I love you too. [laughter]. And it’s perfect. So to answer you, children can drive you crazy but they can also drive you to ecstasy with pride and they can make you smile. They do everything, but there is a point where you have to let go and hope you have done the right job raising them and just sit back and watch the show begin, meaning their life. It’s very much like what we tried to accomplish with Creed. At the beginning, Adonis literally has been reborn and that’s why I hope there is another film, because I want to see where Ryan (director Coogler) wants to take him. Not where I want to take him, but where Ryan wants to take him. BoXeRS FIGHT To WIN. WHaT DoeS WINNING MeaN To You?

There are different levels of winning. Going back to Rocky One, he realizes that no matter how much he prepares, he can’t win. He just can’t win. The other fellow is that much superior. So winning, to me, is setting goals that you think you can accomplish. That is a win, and not being so ambitious CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 

 FROM PAGE 15

because he was very physical. But I don’t know if I really ever got to know him because he was more like an older brother and he didn’t act like a father per se. So the male image that really affected me was in cinema. I looked at the films they were making in the 50s where you have Sinbad, Hercules or Achilles, or The Vikings with Kirk Douglas, and Spartacus. I don’t know why but they were a tremendous influence on me. It just touched a nerve. And maybe that’s why I was drawn towards physical roles, because I was so influenced by them when I was ten and eleven, and twelve, and thirteen. Magnificent Seven … my God, after I saw that film, I came home and was jumping from couch to chair, and couch to chair. Literally, it was revolutionary to me.

that you set yourself up for failure. For example, when I want to do something, I want to be the greatest Shakespearian actor. I can’t [laughs]. It’s just not going to happen, so why am I attempting to do this? Winning to me is being able to accomplish a goal that is within your abilities, and to strive for that. Don’t be envious of another man’s abilities because he is superior. You may be superior in another way, but not in his way. So winning to me is adjusting your goals to your ability. You GaINeD a loT oF WISDoM IN YouR PaST RelaTIoNSHIPS aND You aRe oBVIouSlY NoW a VeRY HaPPIlY MaRRIeD MaN. CaN You Tell Me WHaT YouR WIFe BRINGS To THe MaRRIaGe THaT MakeS You HaPPY?

Well first of all, she is independent and has created her own life. So what she brings is an independent thought and a sense of honesty where I can’t lie to this person because she knows the truth. For example, when she talked to me about doing this film, she said, either be a man or do it the way it’s written and don’t vacillate and don’t try and change it. Let someone play the sick part and you play someone else. So there’s kind of a nurturing quality that I think women have. It’s just in them and they tend to see the big picture, especially when relating to their husbands or male figures. They tend to know instinctively how to instruct their men and how to protect and guide them. Well, it gets me very emotional when I get to the steps because I went there when I was 12 and 13 years old, and there wasn’t much built around there then, just this incredible museum and who would know that I would be coming back to these things fifty years later. That spot is my favorite spot in the world because everything happened there and I feel this magnificent building behind me and look out at that beautiful parkway with these flags and there is an incredible city hall. It just feels so expansive. It’s just a magical place and you go – am I really in Philadelphia or am I in something like city of Oz? It’s a magical place for me. So I have become very, very touched because I feel like up there, you can see all your successes and you can relive your mistakes and all of the joyous moments you had. The sad ones too, and it’s just a very contemplative area for me. Sometimes I go back alone to where Rocky’s house is and that nearly desolate street. It just changed my life and it was at the beginning that I was born that night. So I love that area. Those two spots really, really get me. At the very end? Yes. Choosing how to play that was important. Do you go up those steps triumphant – or do you go up there as a man who needs this other man to support him? We had seen Rocky run up these steps and now he can’t do it alone. So it was very emotional. Really emotional, and I loved it. PHOTO COURTESY OF SERGE RAKHLIN

Model X is designed with safety as the first priority. The floormounted battery lowers the center of gravity so that the risk of rollover is about half that of any vehicle in its class. The battery structure strengthens Model X against side impact intrusions. And without a gasoline engine, the large front trunk acts as a giant impact-absorbing crumple zone. Although the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet conducted crash testing on Model X, Tesla's own internally conducted crash testing indicates that Model X should be the first SUV to receive the highest safety rating in every category. aCTIVe SaFeTY

UTILITY VEHICLE IN HISTORY. WITH ALL-WHEEL DRIVE AND A 90 KWH BATTERY PROVIDING 257 MILES OF RANGE, MODEL X HAS AMPLE SEATING FOR SEVEN ADULTS AND ALL OF THEIR GEAR. AND IT’S LUDICROUSLY FAST, ACCELERATING FROM ZERO TO 60 MILES PER HOUR IN AS QUICK AS 3.2 SECONDS.

A medical grade HEPA filter strips outside air of pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution before circulating it into the cabin. There are three modes: circulate with outside air, re-circulate inside air and a bioweapon defense mode that creates positive pressure inside the cabin to protect occupants. FalCoN WINGS

Falcon Wing doors allow easy access to second and third row seats from even a tight parking space, while traditional SUV doors or Minivan sliding doors would not grant any access. With only a foot of clearance on either side, Falcon Wing doors articulate smoothly up and out of the way, allowing passengers to enter from both front and rear directions. The side and overhead opening is so large that parents can buckle children in without ducking or straining and without bumping their child's head on the roof. aeRoDYNaMIC

Model X is able to achieve 257 miles of range in part because it is the most aerodynamic SUV in production. At 0.24, Model X's drag coefficient is 20% lower than the next best SUV. In addition, an active spoiler deploys from the rear liftgate to optimize highway efficiency and stability. BIG SkY

Model X has the largest all glass panoramic windshield in production, providing an unparalleled view of the stars and sky above. Optimized solar tinting and obstruction-free view creates unlimited visibility for the driver and all passengers. SeaTING FoR SeVeN + GeaR

Model X comfortably seats seven people in three rows. Every seat is the best seat in the house, but the second row seats are a work of art. Mounted on a single post and independently reclining, each second row seat is designed to maximize passenger comfort, legroom, under seat storage and access to the third row. The third row seats fold flat when not in use and the second row seats lean forward and out of the way for even more cargo area. eVeRYTHING FITS

Stow everyone's gear in Model X's large front trunk, rear cargo area and under passenger seats. The front trunk is large enough to hold two golf bags and the rear cargo area can easily hold large items like bicycles, skis and snowboards. Hitch mounted accessory carriers hold additional gear. Model X is the first electric vehicle with a 5,000 pound towing capacity.

How Ballroom Dance Helps You Stay Fit, Mind & Body B y Mo nica D o l e ck a

T

he art of ballroom dance is taking off by storm, and it’s not only ‘Dancing with the Stars’ fans getting involved in this newest sports trend. Ordinary people everywhere are hitting the dance floor and learning how to shake their stuff. Ballroom dance is certainly the cool new thing to try, and believe it or not, you don’t need any prior experience – and you don’t even need a partner! More than ever, people are joining the dance movement to become healthier, both mentally and physically, and to advance their social circle and lead a happier and more fulfilling life. Be the well-oiled machine you were made to be

It seems nowadays that the notion of getting enough exercise is becoming more of a way of life than a fly-by-night fad. With the surplus of healthy living tips available to us on the internet, it seems that if we want better health, all we have to do is turn on our phone or laptop and health is just a click away. Hundreds, and possibly thousands, of health and green living articles sweep us off our feet every day. New info on how to be healthier is constantly thrown at us. However, much of this info is based on changing our diet (which is important, of course) but we need to also add movement into the equation. Creative movement. Most of us read that article on how to make a great Kale smoothie, and then later realize we have no time in the morning to actually make it. Or how about the article on the top 50 ways to reduce stress. Nearly all the

20

tips will include temporary stress relievers, or doing something to change your diet, and sometimes without evening mentioning exercise. But movement is key to feeling better, and the more creative the hobby is (like dance), the more effective and long-lasting the effects will be. That’s where we can squeeze in the idea of ballroom dance as a great alternative to improved wellness. The thought of dancing could be intimidating at first. You may find yourself thinking, Wait, but I’m not a dancer. I’ve never danced in my life! Well, it’s about that time to change that restrictive mentality. How does dance do the trick?

Firstly, engaging in dance strengthens cognitive activity in the brain by reinforcing (synaptic) connections, those responsible for improving mental acuity like memory sharpness, and fine motor skills in activities like driving, cooking, writing and exercising. A 2014 vivafifty.com article justified, “When learning a new dance, students have to remember certain moves, which correlate with the beat of the music. Our brain connects these new movements to the music, which helps us remember them. Kind of like when kids learn their ABCs by singing them.” When we move, our brain releases endorphins, often called the “feel-good” chemicals, which are released by the pituitary gland and have an almost instant positive effect on our mood. Increased endorphins make us happier (like the high we feel when we first fall in love). Ballroom dance also increases blood circulation throughout the

Studios specializing in ballroom dance like Interclub Academy of Dance in Niles, or Master Dance in Palatine have great classes for beginners with absolutely no experience. Visit them at interclubdance.com & masterdancestudio.com body, which optimizes primary functions of vital organs like the heart, lungs and brain. The Berkley Wellness Journal recently suggested, “If dancing gets your heart rate up, it can be a good form of aerobic exercise... one study even found that in people with stable chronic heart failure, slow-fast (interval) waltzing improved heart and blood vessel function and overall quality of life.” So not only is ballroom dancing fun and mentally engaging, you’re also getting your recommended dose of exercise. It’s simple: when you move, your body is healthy and eventually tells your brain, Hey, be happy too! Expand your mind.... and your circle of friends

How many times have you stepped into a “social” setting like Starbucks – a space where people should meet and mingle – only to be greeted by a room full of heads looking down at their screens, completely absorbed in their phone like the world is about to end. As a society where almost

everyone has a smart phone, we’ve subconsciously learned to become completely ignorant and oblivious to our surroundings and unfortunately, this is becoming socially acceptable. Ballroom dance allows us to “be in the moment. We often hear about people wanting to be more connected to the present moment, and to enjoy it. Well, that is possible – if you really want it. Ballroom dance encourages us to stay engaged with others through actual physical contact, but also influences us to stay mentally connected to others –a connection that continually builds, and grows stronger over time. Dancing, especially ballroom, makes us more socially aware of our environment and our body, at the same time, and forces us to get away from the cyber world. It’s pretty difficult to tweet an update while fox-trotting!! In your time at a ballroom dance studio, you’ll meet people from all walks of life; ones with whom you can exchange not only dance steps with, but also valuable lessons, conversations and the best of all, memories.

Vaginal Rejuvenation i

t's not just for x rated movies anymore. Men and women all over the world are much more conscious of their body image and not only the areas that are exposed to the environment and their peers. Vaginal rejuvenation procedures are significantly increasing. Women are becoming much more concerned with the aesthetic and function of this area. This is most likely due to the more liberal nature of our society whether it's through the media or the acceptance of adult natured print and videos. There are many different types of surgical and non surgical procedures that need to be tailored to a woman’s needs. Surgical procedures consist of: 1. Labiaplasty: this is performed on a woman whose labia minora "inner lips" are excessively large. This can be a cause for embarrassment, can be noticeable through clothing, and can become irritated, sore during physical activities and sexual intercourse. The surgery is basically a reduction of the excess tissue for a more appealing look and comfort. 2. Hymen reconstruction: this procedure is often performed in certain cultures when a woman who is not a virgin is getting married. Occasionally, especially in arranged marriages, the expectation is that the new bride is losing her virginity for the first time. The procedure consists of repairing the hymen which caused the vaginal opening to be smaller and therefore will re-tear on the wedding night leading to very mild

bleeding. 3. Vaginal tightening: this is a much more involved operation where the vagina and the perineal body (the area between the anus and the vagina) are repaired and tightened. Often times after a vaginal birth the pelvic floor and vagina become loose, an episiotomy may be performed and when not repaired well it may increase

the opening of the vagina. Women with increased laxity will often complain of not being able to feel their partner well or enjoy sex. It is important to also evaluate for bladder prolapse, urinary incontinence and rectal prolapse. All these conditions can be addressed at the same time. 4. Fat transfer: as we age we lose volume. Occasionally that volume loss can be in the pubic area as well as the labia majors making the vaginal area look aged. Transferring fat and filling up these areas can give a more youthful look. Often times a combination of the above procedures are performed to get the desired result: more pleasurable sexual experience as well as a feeling of confidence in the aesthetic appearance of a women's vaginal area. These procedures should not be taken lightly. It is very important to make sure that your surgeon is board certified in gynecology or plastic surgery with extensive experience in these procedures. The consequences of a poorly performed operation can be devastating in both appearance and functionality. There are now machines on the market for non-surgical rejuvenation. Essentially, what they do is heat up either the inside or outside of the vagina. On the inside the results usually include improved moisture of the vagina, may help with stress incontinence and subtle tightening leading to an overall better sexual experience. On the outside the heat may lead to subtle shrinkage of the labia majora “outer lips" and labia minora “inner lips" leading to a tighter more youthful appearance. These new machines do not replace surgical treatments, but they do come at a much lower cost and risk. When performed by a well trained surgeon, these procedures can greatly improve the way one feels about their body image and their overall sexual experience!

mAking the woRlD A pRettieR plAce A Q&A WITH LEON OKS, FOUNDER OF ICANVAS by MoNICa DoleCka From a young age, leon oks knew how to inspire others. motivating people came naturally to him and today, he continues to put his talents to good use. As a young boy, leon would shovel driveways and sidewalks for extra money. he earned this money not for himself, but for his parents, who did everything so that he and his sister could have a bright future. leon’s talent to draw people into what he did eventually piloted him to launch a successful online business. As president of icanvas, one of the biggest e-commerce canvas art vendors and manufacturers, leon’s journey to his “dream job” has been fun, challenging and rewarding. And while motivated to keep his business at the top, leon never forgets to give back to the community. he is constantly engaged in various philanthropic projects, one of which includes helping build soccer programs for teens at local flagships high schools.

Rmag: Where from Russia are you from and was the impetus behind you moving to the uS?

oks: I’m from Minsk, Belarus. I’ve been here since ’91 but I still consider myself Russian because I left when Minsk was still part of USSR. So I still haven’t completely transformed telling others I’m Belorussian. Also, if I tell people I’m from Minsk, it’s a longer explanation than if I just say I’m Russian [Laughs]. Being a Jewish family in Russia, while the country was going through transition, wasn’t a comfortable position to be in. There were fewer possibilities for a bright future. My parents didn’t know what moving to a democratic Russia from a communist Russia would be like, so they decided that moving here was the best thing for us. Their idea was to find a better life in Chicago so that we could have more opportunities. Rmag: What’s one of your earliest memories in america?

oks: I remember when we

36

were flying to America and they were giving away free pop on the plane. At that time, I only saw empty cans of Coke or Pepsi and don’t remember actually tasting them. I went to the stewardess and tapped her on the shoulder, because I didn’t know English, and made a gesture that I wanted more!! [Laughs]. It was exciting but it was a difficult transition. Rmag: Was there an entrepreneur in you from the start?

oks: When I was 11, I earned my first money for my family. We were living with my aunt at the time and I jumped at the opportunity to shovel snow. I gave my cousin a percentage from what I made for her setting up the initial conversations. I never wanted to be a burden to my family because I knew how much they were struggling. Early on in my childhood I saw that I was creative and able to get people to believe in me. I was the captain of the soccer team, even though I was not the best player. I’ve always

i’ve always enjoyed the responsibility of having the weight on my shoulders as a leader, as well as the respect that comes with it... enjoyed the responsibility of having the weight on my shoulders as a leader, as well as the respect that comes with it. When I was a kid I probably didn’t know what this meant, but it obviously evolved into something I became good at… and that’s leadership. Today I achieve success by encouraging my team to do their best through positivity and stern, but fair, constructive criticism. Rmag: Take me back to starting iCanvas. How did you first get into selling art?

oks: After graduating college I started my professional career in the IT world. For ten years I was the Director of IT for the Northwestern University Settlement Association, a nonprofit company that opens up charter schools for kids in low income communities. During that time I also became somewhat of a serial entrepreneur and started selling dietary nutrition products on eBay. I was into the Atkins diet then and realized I could sell the health products that I liked for a better price than what was offered online. I began doing that until a friend of mine joined the eBay venture and we began selling car modification parts. Later, that evolved into selling t-shirts with artwork and movie images on them. It was successful because we were good at identifying pop-culture trends. We created a store on eBay and quickly optimized it to improve sales. Suddenly, we saw an opportunity to jump into the business of selling artwork because of the new technology that allowed you to print on large format printers. The artwork had more e-commerce

potential than the shirts and car parts, and we already had a lot of images to work with. So we rolled with that idea and eventually it became what it is today. Rmag: What sacrifices have you made along the way in your entrepreneurship?

oks: At one point, I had four jobs! Also, for a year and half, I gave up my house in order to put iCanvas into full gear. In 2007 my partner and I worked out of our homes, and it wasn’t until 2011 that we hired people to help us. In 2012, we moved into our first facility, which was over 7500 sq feet, but within a year we quickly outgrew that and shortly afterwards moved to our current location in Morton Grove where we have over 62,000 sq feet!! Rmag: Paint a picture of the future of iCanvas. Where do you expect it to be in 5 years?

oks: Since the beginning, we’ve grown exponentially. From 2011-2012 we grew 400%– and we are still growing. Annually, we ship close to a quarter of a million art pieces. Right now we have roughly 30,000 images available in 36 different sizes and 7 different styles. We’re constantly signing new artists, and working diligently on improving our collections with currently signed artists. But my real goal can’t be measured in numbers. What I really want is to help make the world a beautiful place, one artwork at a time. The fact that my business helps the world be a happier place through art and community support is my biggest inspiration.

Л

KalIKa reCeIVING HIs INterNatIoNal CoaCH CertIFICate

Well-versed in several forms of martial arts, eduard kalika has transformed self-defense to a whole new level of personal. Focusing on coaching martial arts as a way to grow healthier and more confident, he designs practice based on the individual's preferences and capabilities. Many different people all over the Northwest suburbs are reclaiming their control through kalika's kodkokan School of MMa, relearning what it means to be fit, focused, and happy. Where are you from originally?

The Soviet Union. When did you come here?

January 1993.

Then you came to the u.S?

What forms of martial arts do you practice?

Yes, I coached judo from 1993-94 at the YMCA, and then at Palace of Sports in Buffalo Grove. While I was coaching I was, and am still, competing in national competitions placing as a World Champion in Sambo Among Masters twice, a Champion in Global Hapkido twice, World Champion Among Masters in Judo twice, a Pan-American Champion in Sambo, the U.S Judo Champion five times and U.S Sambo Champion three times. So as you can tell, I am always trying to stay active.

Sambo, Combat Hapkido, Judo, Combat Sambo and Mixed Martial Arts. How were you introduced to martial arts?

When I was a kid, I ended up in a fight with multiple kids and I was wrestling them without kicking or punching. Someone was watching me and grew impressed; he eventually became my mentor. Then, by age 18, I had to go to the army. 2015 sambo WorlD CHamPIoNsHIP amoNG masters IN asHDoD, Israel.

What did you do while in the army?

I was wrestling for the army club. I was eventually transferred to be a part of the Spetsnaz unit and was introduced to one of the most unique forms of martial arts, Spetsnaz hand-to-handcontact, which was based on Sambo, Jiu Jitsu, and Karate. Can you expand on what those forms of martial arts entail?

Sambo is primarily Soviet (Russian) style of Hand-ToHand Combat and sport; it is practiced in more than 100 countries and on 5 continents. Judo is completely Japanese; it is based on Jiu Jitsu and Karate, but without the punching or kicking.

the opportunity to work in China. I signed the contract in ’91 and coached the women’s Olympic team there for a year.

I was on the Ukrainian National Team and then had

How does your coaching differ from other martial arts coaches?

It’s a mixture of everything I know and focuses around my students’ bodies and abilities. My goal is to improve their health, self-esteem, strength, and knowledge on self-defense. Because I am well-versed in many types of martial arts, my concentration is on the student rather than the style. I want to teach them what fits them best. Also, as far as children go, I believe that they should learn how to fall and control their bodies first before they learn how to kick or punch. What are you currently doing?

Now I’m a doctor, but I still coach Sambo, Combat Hapkido, Judo, Combat Sambo and Mixed Martial Arts, at my club, the Kodkokan school of MMA in Buffalo Grove. It’s open for men, women, and children of all ages, shapes, and sizes.

They do it BIG here. Everything is ballsout: the humo(u)r, the sarcasm, the proper English breakfast (veggie option available). It would be wise to plan for a nap after the meal. You’ve been warned. Note: try the bread pudding, made by mum who’s cooking up everything in the back. -P

Any seat is a good seat here: slumped in a couch on the sunny verandah, enjoying a mixed drink in the Permit Room, or in the warm decor of the main restaurant area. You really can’t go wrong. We haven’t had a bad thing on the menu, but the musthaves are the Okra Fries, Naughty Chocolate Chai (with Bourbon!), and the Rajma Chawala hearty bowl of slow-cooked kidney beans over basmati with red onions and raita on the side. Note: Show up early to avoid long queues at this hot spot. -P

Casa Botin. Opened 1725. Calle de Cuchilleros, 17, Madrid, Spain.” В сноске добавлено: ”The oldest restaurant in the world is Restaurante Botin has been operating ever since; it even retains the original 18th century firewood oven”.

Сюда входят Аndalusian cold soup (Gazpacho), roast suckling pig, ice cream, bread, wine (½), beer or mineral water.

What is the best wine to drink when admiring works by the Maestro?

What is

Paczki Day? By N ath ania l R adichi , D N A i n f o Ch icago

bar, Small's, serves up vodka-filled mini paczki (dubbed " paczki bombs"). PACZKI POINTERS

The singular form of “paczki” is “paczek.” Debate roils over the “proper” pronunciation of the word, but popular pronunciations sound a lot like “PUNCH-key,” “POONCHkey” or “POANCH-key.” (Continue that unwinnable argument amongst yourselves in the comments section.) Paczki Day is popularly celebrated on the same day as Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras. Traditional paczek fillings include rosehip, cherry and prune, though most bakeries include more modern fillings like custard, chocolate, raspberry and lemon curd. Don’t be fooled by imitations. While paczki may look like jelly donuts, bismarks and the like, they are different: Paczki are eggier and denser. As Dobra Bielinski of Delightful Pastries explained to WBEZ in Chicago, “People really eat jelly-filled doughnuts for the filling, not the doughnut itself...With paczki, what happens is that people eat it for the dough and not the filling. Relatively, there is less filling and more dough. Once this cools off, when you bite it, it springs back, and it doesn’t collapse like pancake.” Gourmet assortment of Paczki:

On the morning of Fat Tuesday, Dinkel's Bakery is a Mardi Gras madhouse. A few patrons grab for coffee and king cakes in the 92-year-old North Side bakery, but what everyone is really there for are the paczki.

n cities around the country, and particularly in Midwestern cities like Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland, "Paczki Day" is a beloved tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. Making the fried, cream-filled paczki was a way observant Catholics could empty their stock of lard, sugar, eggs and fruit — foods typically avoided during the Lenten fast — before Ash Wednesday.

Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet Old Fashioned – this is not! Filled with a silky brandy infused cream, dipped in melted white chocolate ganache, a swirl of red tinted chocolate, and finished with a cherry… Oh – Memories! Raspberry Vodka Shooter This one’s hand split, smeared with a puree of red raspberry and a sweet coating of our raspberry vodka infused cream. The top is smother in melted white chocolate ganache and a bright drizzle… no need for a shot glass here! Spiced Bananas Foster George says, “Banana any other way just ain’t banana!” We start with our silky cream and blend it with spiced rum and banana puree, top it off with caramel cream, a sprinkle of caramelized sugar bark and the finishing touch, a dried banana slice – for the curious ones!

At Dinkel's in Chicago, the fryers have been working overtime since Paczki Day officially started last Thursday. One employee estimated that as of Tuesday's morning rush, the bakery had made roughly 18,000 paczki and would continue frying throughout the day. In Hamtramck, the heavily Polish enclave of metro Detroit, groups like the Polish League of American Veterans have hosted paczek-eating contests and a neighborhood

Bailey’s Cherry Bombshell Luck o’ the Irish…Maybe! We’ve filled this bad boy with Bailey’s cherry infused soft cream and chopped Door County Cherries, hand dipped it in chocolate fudge and a bit of drizzle… For sure this one’s the bomb! Kahlua’n Mudslide This messy concoction had me at ‘Kahlua!’ Rum, espresso, and caramel infused cream fill this hand split creation. The top is smeared with chocolate fudge and more Kahlua’n cream, oh… so decadent. Rumchata Crunch OMG! This Rumchata infused cream will definitely take you to a warm, sunny place. Dipped in white chocolate ganache, then smothered in cinnamon toast cereal for an awesome crunch!

Sometimes our vodka has impurities, like ice. Every vodka talks about how pure they are, but unlike every other vodka, we are one of the purest vodkas in the world. And so utterly smooth it can be enjoyed neat. Or if you choose to add your own impurities, on the rock too.
