or nearly 15 years, Republic Media’s Million Dollar Club has recognized the significant role women business owners play in

driving the economy here in the Valley and across the state of Arizona. But it’s time for a name change. This year, we’re introducing the Successful Women Owners Network. The acronym SWON is fitting for this group of dynamic individuals, women possessing a unique mix of qualities: elegance and grace, tenacity and stamina. These are all characteristics reminiscent of a magnificent feathered creature known for

its peaceful and harmonious traits, but also for its power and strength.

HOT GROWTH Adalaida Severson BUSHTEX

Inside these pages are extraordinary women, each leading their respective companies, while meeting several important criteria. All members of SWON are 50-percent owners of Arizona-based businesses that have generated more than $1 million in gross revenue. In addition, Republic Media is proud to further spotlight four women who embody four key characteristics of SWON: innovation, growth, community service and lifetime achievement. All the women in this publication are energetic and have a deep commitment to promoting growth in their companies and the community. These four women stood out by dedicating themselves to both the public and their own businesses.

Mary Darling’s Tucson-based company, Darling Geomatics, is one of a kind. Established in 1997 to provide surveying services, the firm has pioneered the use of 3D laser scanning with building information modeling (BIM) to enhance the precision of measurements gathered and to expedite renovation projects. In the process, Darling has revolutionized how construction gets done. “When we did work for the San Francisco International Airport,” she said, “our 3D scanning of the crawlspace and the main floor of Terminal 2 saved architects and engineers 60 days of design time as they prepared for a phased demolition. That helped the costs of the project go down dramatically.” She points out that 3D laser scanning the way her company relies on it produces more than clearer images. “It creates pretty pictures,” she said, “but you have to be able to accurately connect the images to survey control data for the technology to be useful.” That was especially challenging with the airport project, she said, because accurate original blueprints or schematics of the 1950s-era terminal were not available. The company has used advanced technology for more than a decade. When Mary, who holds a master’s degree in biology and a law degree, and her husband Richard, a registered land surveyor, saw the 3D scanning technology at a conference in 2002, “we knew that would be the future of surveying,” said Mary, whose company has added an office in Phoenix. An animation and marketing branch of the company successfully implemented a 3D projection project at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las

And, the company’s 3D imagery can show television viewers of a PGA tournament precisely how a ball will travel to the hole. Recently the company was hired to create a 3D model for a frame that would hold advertising signage on the exterior of the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas. “They wanted very advanced advertising on the outside of the stadium where the messages can easily change,” Mary said, “but because of the unique geometry of the building, it was more complicated than a digital billboard. Because we were able to create a precise 3D model of what was needed, the signs were smooth and perfect the first time they went up.” The company’s expertise with the technology has brought it international clients. In Turkey, Darling is surveying an archeological project. “It’s fascinating to work in a country with such a rich, deep history,” she said. Darling says the company’s diversity of projects and “never-ending opportunities” are her inspiration in business. “We’re fortunate to be expanding to projects in Mexico, Honduras and Canada,” she said. “What we can do is limited only by our imagination.” – Debra Gelbart

And, now the team wants to take it to the world. The shining success of each student radiates into the community. Founder Trish McCarty says when the Phoenix school opened, the adjacent park was a drug addict haven. Now, families play.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The StarShine holistic approach focuses not only on academics but also on the mind, body, spirit, health, wealth and happiness of each unique student. One of StarShine’s 15 guiding principles – music is the first

language – stresses the importance of music and the brain to connect learning and the heart. With its garden and farm animals, the new Creative Community EcoVillage is a living laboratory teaching bio-sustainable living. Recognizing that education doesn’t begin and end in a traditional school environment, McCarty has expanded the outreach of the StarShine Effect by providing educational and life learning programs and opportunities through the StarShine Network.

TRANSFORM SUCCESS

From homeschoolers who use StarShine’s Home School in A Box, to instructors who implement StarShine’s Teachers as Leaders programs, to parents who adopt StarShine’s Family Success programs, the StarShine Network serves as a way for all people to incorporate the 15 Guiding Principles to transform and achieve !&:%1"1( %&18 31)61 :' : '#551''0#; ;$01+ “Learning is a lifelong adventure,” said McCarty. “It is important that no matter where we are in our lives, our mind, body, spirit, health, wealth and happiness remain in balance so we can live life to its highest potential.” McCarty urges people to join the StarShine Network (www.StarShineNetwork.org) and discover how they can effectuate transformational change in their life and the lives of others.

If you’ve watched cable or broadcast news coverage of just about any event in any corner of the world, chances are you’ve seen Adelaida Severson’s work. With her husband Barry, she co-founded and operates Bushtex, a satellite transmission equipment company that provides the capacity for satellite broadcasting and tracking anywhere through a uniquely mobile suitcase-size package of components called a “flyaway.” “We have the equipment strategically placed around the world,” she said, “and we can hire freelancers to operate it. We don’t necessarily have to have U.S.-based crews operating it, so it becomes quite cost-effective for clients.” The company, named for the industry expression for the remoteness of satellites (the “bush”) and the technicians who make the transmissions happen (“tex”), has 20 full-time employees. Her company’s equipment is so nimble and so transportable that it has caught the attention of the federal government and the military. Bushtex equipment allows unmanned aerial vehicles to remain aloft longer and at a higher altitude. She has had contracts with NASA, the National Weather Service and the Coast Guard since 2004, even though it was initially challenging to become a preferred vendor for the government. Commercial satellite broadcasting and government tracking have helped her company grow exponentially. In the past two years, profits have increased by 400 percent. Even with that kind of growth, Severson, who holds a Ph.D. in public administration, is confident

If we don’t grow any more, that’s fine, but we’re ready for additional growth if it happens.” In the meantime, she remains gratified by what her company provides. “Whether it’s transmitting news, entertainment or data, I know that what is being transmitted could bring happiness, joy, sadness, celebration, insight, wisdom, knowledge and most importantly, change, to whomever is receiving it,” she said. “In many ways, we are contributing to a higher vision and mission, which makes a difference in our world. And all this from our small little company here in Gilbert, Arizona.” What can other entrepreneurs learn from her? First, humility. “I don’t think there is any scientific recipe for success,” she said. “Other than the usual mantras of perseverance, hard work, no fear and true motivation, the main factor for me is having faith: faith in yourself, in a higher power and in the people around you.” – Debra Gelbart

Eileen Rogers believes in paying it forward. She has maximized the reach and impact of her Scottsdale marketing firm, Allegra Marketing & Print, by establishing a program through which nonprofits can receive in-kind services from her company. Almost from the time she started her company, Rogers said, nonprofit organizations sought her help with their printing and marketing needs. To serve as many of these organizations as possible, she implemented a process that lets them apply for funds every year. To date, the FootSTEPS program has awarded $45,000 in grants to nonprofits for marketing, strategy, data and print services. In the first year of the program in 2011, 153 organizations applied. Of those, 15 were each awarded $1,000 grants. Then, in 2012 and 2013, another 30 organizations were given $1,000 grants. “We ask the organizations to tell us how they will leverage this grant to have a greater impact in their community,” said Rogers, who two years ago launched a second business—One Creative View, an executive coaching firm. “Some of the nonprofits use the FootSTEPS grant to clean up their data, develop marketing strategies or use Allegra’s printing services to create displays for conferences or expos,” she said. Allegra assisted the Humane Society, for example, with its planned giving campaign. “We helped them develop an optimal strategy that resulted in $50,000 in planned gifts to the organization,” Rogers said. “I disc discovered a passion for giving back, and our team feels as strongly as I do.” for her entire adult life. At 23, she came out to the Valley from Wisconsin to get an international marketing degree from the Thunderbird School of Global Management. She walked into a print shop one day to make copies of her resumé. “I spoke with the owner,” she said. “I needed a job and he needed marketing help.” After 13 years of a “sweat-equity-buy-in deal” with the owner, Rogers bought the business. Along the way as an entrepreneur, she learned some important life lessons. ”Put yourself at the top of your priority list,” she advises young business owners. “If you don’t, you will burn out, but you may not recognize that until you get there.” As she grew her company, she realized early on “how easy it is to make a difference in the community. She joined local commissions and boards and through her business, she met owners of nonprofits. “I discovered a passion for giving back,” she said, “and our team feels as strongly as I do. This business gives me the opportunity to help in so many ways, because printing and marketing connect people to their community. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT: Jamie Piotti

A learning experience

Bettering student achievement across America is Scottsdale entrepreneur’s goal

MARK LIPCZYNSKI

Jamie Piotti is setting a new standard as one of the youngest “Lifetime Achievement” award winners. Though she’s only 50, she has more than a quarter century of business experience and she’s about to become a published author. She was just 24 when she bought Evans Newton Inc. (ENI), a company that works with teachers and school districts to improve learning. Today, with 70 full- and part-time employees and up to 150 contractors, the company’s expert staff members write curricula based on state standards, design assessment tools teachers can use with their students and create professional development programs to help teachers in the classroom. “It really works,” Piotti said. “Very poor schools have gone from the worst in academic achievement to some of the best, based on the particular measurements for success used in each state.” She bought the company from her parents and boldly decided to operate it differently from the way her father ran it. Candidly, she said, she

I found foun that I could mold a company with passion and commitment.”

wanted to lead the company with an emphasis on making a difference in schools across the country while making the business financially viable again. “I found that I could mold a company with passion and commitment,” she said. She also has found time to get involved with entrepreneur development initiatives, including the Entrepreneurs’ Organization, a global nonprofit that has 145 members in Arizona. She’s also part of Charter 100 AZ, an organization whose members are 100 successful Arizona women. “I am so honored to be part of these organizations,” she said. “We have a chance to learn from each other support each other.” What she’s learned from her experience is the subject of her book, Soulful… How to build a successful company, help others and live a

life with purpose. She took time off from running ENI to write it. “I wanted to tell the story of how I use spiritual principles, including listening to my intuition, to accomplish my goals,” she said. She also wants to caution other entrepreneurs about the “damage ego and greed can cause a company. I want to show readers how they can have a purpose-driven business that can make a difference in the world.” She said she’s learned the critical importance of becoming financially responsible, largely through her father’s example. “I’ve learned to be a better person because of him,” she said. The book is set to be published next year. Back at the helm of her company now that her book is completed, she believes that if entrepreneurs “find their purpose and their passion, they won’t have to run a business as if the most important thing is to make a lot of money. They’ll discover that they can really enjoy what they’re doing.” – Debra Gelbart
