“Jax is a 4-year-old, 8-pound Yorkie rescue, who thinks he’s 60 pounds. A loving addition to our family and very protective of our four granddaughters. One morning we opened the front door to take one of our granddaughters for a walk and there was a coyote at the end of our driveway. Jax jumped off the back of the sofa and flew out the door chasing it down the trail in front of our house and came back unscathed. He has a special place in our hearts.” —Judy

Newsworthy DC Ranch path and trail improvement project
Phase I projects consisted of recommendations to improve trail safety that included regrading of existing trails and adding crosswalks at primary path and trail connections. Phase II and Phase III recommendations include adding trails and connections around Copper Ridge School and throughout DC Ranch’s four villages—Desert Camp, The Country Club, Silverleaf and Desert Parks.

T
he DC Ranch network of path and trails connects residents throughout the neighborhoods, parks, McDowell Sonoran Preserve, commercial and community centers. With over 35 miles of paths and trails, it’s one of the best ways to explore the area, connect with neighbors and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
In the spring of 2018, as part of the DC Ranch 20th anniversary celebration, the Community Council partnered with Okanogan Trail Construction (OTC) to begin a yearlong capital improvement. OTC experts were tasked with completing a survey of the existing path and trail system, creating a list of recommendations for safety and connectivity, updating the existing trail map and designing and installing wayfinding signs, kiosks, pedestals and emergency markers.
After surveying the system, OTC project leaders provided a list of 50 recommendations for improvements based on safety, connectivity, resident privacy, resource protection and maintenance access. Planners divided the recommendations into three phases with a focus on safety, scope and cost. The
In early 2019, OTC experts completed updating the existing trail map and created a wayfinding system that includes kiosks, pedestals, trail signs and emergency markers. Installation of the wayfinding system will continue through late spring/early summer.
A hiking forum and trail hikes are scheduled to introduce residents to the new maps and wayfinding system. The forum is scheduled on Monday, April 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Desert Camp Community Center. Members of OTC, The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy and City of Scottsdale will be there to discuss how trails work together and answer any questions. The first of four hikes in 2019 is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 at 9:00 a.m. where residents will explore Silverleaf and the Desert Parks trail located in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Residents may pick up the newly updated DC Ranch Path & Trail map at either the Desert Camp or The Homestead community centers or log on to DCRanch.com.

A Renaissance in Carefree As Scottsdale grows and becomes more urbanized, a short drive to the small town of Carefree gives a reminder of classic Arizona living and our old West roots. With Easy Street and Ho Hum Road, it’s a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but still carries a level of distinction.

his past year has brought new art galleries, restaurants and a wellness resort to the scene. Beth Renfro, the new Director of Marketing and Communications for Carefree, is thrilled about this renaissance. “We are hoping to invigorate people into coming here. There are some great new art galleries and dining options for every price point.”
FOCUS ON ART
Not to be confused with Cave Creek (just up the road) which is known more for bikers and its Wild West appeal, Carefree aims to give a more cultural experience. Art Walk is held every Friday night from 4 to 7 p.m. and of the 12 galleries in Carefree, each is completely different. “The culture has changed from mostly Native American art to provide more choices including modern art, metal sculptures, glass and jewelry. There are museum show artists here who showcase their work in places like Santa Fe, Carmel and New York,” says Ted Denton, gallery owner and founder of the Art Walk. Spanish Village is one of the first buildings that was constructed in Carefree. This charming retail location is also where Shelly Spence, owner of Grace Renee Gallery, opened her doors in November. “My vision is to give people an experience. I hold events where everyone can mingle and meet with the artists I carry. I’ve been selective about my artists and the response has been very good.” Most exciting for Spence is that she is the first and only place in Arizona that carries Nanis Jewelry. Handcrafted in Italy by Laura Bicego, the exclusive 18k gold pieces are luminescent works of art.
On April 21, Spence will host an evening with Phoenix artist Jennyfer Stratman who also lives part of the year in Melbourne, Australia. She expresses herself through fine metal freestanding and wall sculptures, and her style incorporates both the fluidity of her chosen medium, as well as the intricacy and patience of her early work with ceramics. She has exhibited in 28 solo exhibitions and over 100 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Adelante Gallery also relocated to Spanish Village from El Pedregal. The whimsical gallery showcases paintings, sculpture and jewelry by local and international folk and fine artists.
After 37 years of producing awardwinning, juried fine art and wine festivals in Scottsdale, Thunderbird Artists has opened its first fine art gallery in Carefree. Owner Denise Colter felt the town was their home away from home and a place where they wanted a more constant presence. With people visiting from all over the world, they enjoy sharing unique pieces like bronze and glass chandeliers, porcelain sculptures and colorful paintings. “The painting ‘Marilyn Moonroe’ by Todd Steele always make me smile,” she says. If you’re going to invest in art, find something that speaks to you.
TASTE FOR FINE DINING
Phoenix Magazine recently awarded Confluence as 2018 Restaurant of the Year. Open in July of last year, Brandon and Tori Gauthier’s Frenchinfluenced American bistro is housed in the
former Café Bink space. Kevin Binkley fans became acquainted with the unassuming couple’s prodigious talents (he cooked, she managed) at the original Binkley’s. Their restaurant offers thoughtful wines, a rotating selection of swoon-worthy house-baked breads and elegant, globally inflected dishes that are truly unique. 36889 N. Tom Darlington Dr., restaurantconfluence.com Keeler’s Neighborhood Steakhouse opened with anticipation on New Year’s Eve. If the Keeler name sounds familiar, it’s because they also own Liberty Station on Market Street. The upscale restaurant includes a rooftop bar and offers a daily happy hour menu (3 to 6 p.m.). 7212 East Ho Hum Road, keelerssteakhouse.com
UNPLUG AND RECHARGE
The iconic stacked boulders in Carefree are an unforgettable setting for top golf and resort amenities. CIVANA opened in 2018 as the first sustainable wellness resort in the Greater Phoenix area. With a focus on health through clean eating, movement, healing arts and enrichment, the resort aims to provide opportunities for engaging the body and soul. The state-of-the-art 22,000 square foot spa features hydrotherapy treatments like tepidarium, hot/cold walking pools, a cold plunge shower, a Watsu treatment pool and a saunarium. Daily fitness and enrichment classes (like meditation or juicing) are included with every stay. Day experiences are also available for local residents. 3770 Mule Train Road, civanacarefree.com

Did you know? • Home to 4,000 residents, Carefree sits at an elevation of 2,568 feet and is often 5 to 7 degrees cooler than Phoenix. • Carefree has the most restaurants per capita of any city or town in Arizona, per the Arizona Restaurant Association.
• Carefree Studios filmed productions for Orson Welles, Bob Hope and Dick van Dyke in the 1970’s. The building was razed in 1999 for residential development.

Hyde Park adds Fine Art to Market Street

orth Scottsdale business owner Erik Humphrey of Hyde Park Interiors has expanded his Hyde Park brand with a new art gallery. Hyde Park Fine Art opened January 17 on Market Street. The boutique art gallery is conveniently located next door to Hyde Park Fine Rugs.
In 2014, Humphrey opened his flagship store Hyde Park Interiors in North Scottsdale at Pima and Pinnacle Peak roads. As a full-service interior design firm with a boutique style furniture store, Humphrey’s plan was to provide unparalleled customer service in a setting that is welcoming and comfortable. Humphrey further planned for specialty stores to complete the

“The visibility and architecture of Market Street with steel, stone and glass are very appealing. It showcases all that we do,” says Humphrey. Having assisted in over a dozen recent interior design projects within DC Ranch he adds, “Our service fits the needs of the homes here and fine art goes hand in hand with our projects. We want to make it easy and turnkey for our clients.”
With projects as far as Michigan, Humphrey and his talented team are dialed in to what’s current in market trends. Some 2019 design trends include abstract paintings, metal and sculptural art with a lot of dimension and they see the use of bold colors, like red and green, also making a comeback. Hyde Park Fine Art features original and giclée art from local, regional
and international artists. Sharon Seifert, Manager and Art Consultant for Hyde Park Fine Art, has been in the art business for 29 years. She says, “We try to feature local artists as much as possible, but keep a variety of styles. You’ll see things here that you won’t see in most galleries. Everything from the art, to fabrics and rugs at Hyde Park are relevant and work together.”

Hiking the safe way
T
BY JOHN LOLEIT | CITY OF SCOTTSDALE
he McDowell Sonoran Preserve has many miles of trails from easy and short to difficult and long. Enjoyment of this beautiful desert is related to preparedness and common sense. Even a short hike with simple problems can turn out to be traumatic, so here are a few things to consider:
Know your physical limitations If it’s
been awhile since you stepped out for a hike, go a shorter distance than what you anticipate you can do. You want to feel good after the hike knowing you had energy to spare.
Be familiar with the trail you are hiking Preserve maps provide distance between points and intersections as well as elevation between them.
Check the weather forecast Radio, TV
and cell phone apps are all available to help you understand the forecast. It never hurts to stop during your hike to observe any changes.
Share your plans Tell someone where you are going, who you might be going with and when you can be expected back. Any change of plan could increase the time necessary to help you, if needed. © 2016 Village Health Clubs & Spas

a must, no matter the season. Dressing in layers can give you the most options. Undoubtedly, proper footwear for the terrain is the most important piece of clothing you have.
WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR HIKE Water is the most essential item to
always have with you. If you have drank half your water, turn around and head back to your starting point. Carry more water than you
need; extra is always welcome when the unexpected happens.
A trail map along with the various trail apps available on your phone are excellent. The app Maprika has exact copies of the Preserve trail maps and it provides you with your exact location on the trail. Hiking snacks will depend on the
length and difficulty of your hike. Dried and fresh fruit, energy bars and salty pretzels will provide energy.
Your cell phone is very important,
so make sure it is fully charged before you head out. Text messages can be sent even when the phone shows no signal. Most phones provide a flashlight that becomes very handy for a variety of uses. Using headsets during hiking is highly discouraged. These reduce your ability to hear what is going on around you such as a hiker wanting to pass, a rattlesnake warning, the buzz of bees or the roar of thunder.
A whistle is small and easy to put in
your pocket but can be heard over greater distances than your shouts.
Hiking poles add rhythm and balance to your stride and reduce stress and strain on your joints.
An emergency blanket is inexpensive
and made of silver foil-like material. About the size of a wallet, it can easily fit in your pocket or pack and be used for shade or a poncho. Its reflective qualities also make them a valuable tool to signal for help. Use your common sense, because being prepared and enjoying the great outdoors will make your hike exceptional!
