Head Coach Sherman Reed Sherman Reed enters his third season as the head coach of the Coppin State baseball program after spending two previous seasons as an assistant coach.

He graduated from Towson in 1983 with a degree in instructional technology and later earned his M.B.A. from Johns Hopkins in 1999. Reed and his wife Dorothy have three children, Tynetta, Candice and Sherman, Jr. and reside in Catonsville.

During his first two seasons at the helm, Reed has worked tirelessly on the recruiting trail. The 2012 edition of the Eagles featured 20 freshmen and sophomores laying the foundation for success in the coming years. Reed was an assistant coach at Coppin State in 2008 under former head coach Harvey Lee and in 2009 working with Mike Scolinos. “This is like coming home for me,” said Reed. “I was raised in west Baltimore, I went to public schools here and I have family members that graduated from Coppin State. “I recognize that there are only 301 Division I coaching jobs and am very honored that Mr. Ramsey believes than I am the right person to turn the program around.” Reed played collegiately at Towson from 1979-83 under former Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers coach Billy Hunter. He then spent 10 seasons playing independent baseball prior to beginning his coaching career. The Baltimore native has coached at various levels, including Western Tech and Catonsville High Schools, pony league and Cal Ripken collegiate baseball. Additionally, he was the director of the Yankee Rebels Baseball Club from 2005-10 which is the oldest amateur baseball club in Maryland and was the coordinator of the Urban Baseball Camp for the Kansas City Royals in 2008-09.

He previously served as an assistant coach during the 2009 season.

Beckman spent the 2010 season as an associate scout with the San Diego Padres following after serving as an assistant coach with the UMBC baseball program. Prior to coming to Coppin State in the fall of 2008, Beckman was the head coach and assistant athletic director at St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis, Md. He also served as an assistant coach at St. Mary’s high school in 2007.

Additionally, he has coached the Des Moines Oaks summer league team. Acri graduated from Northern Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree in social sciences in 2007.

Beckman’s other baseball experience includes scouting for the Colorado Rockies in 2002-03 covering North Florida and South Georgia and coaching a summer collegiate scout team in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2002-03. He has also coached at the high school level in the Atlanta, Ga., area from 1997-2000 at Milton High School and North Cobb High School. A native of Cleveland, he played at both Kent Roosevelt High School in Kent, Ohio (1985-86) and Lakeland High School in Lakeland, Fla., in 1987-1988 before playing at Tallahassee Community College in 1990-91.
