Millicent Sylvan-Van Norden Head Coach First Season Alcorn State ‘00 Millicent Sylvan-Van Norden enters her first season as the Sylvan-Van Norden Career Record Coppin State head coach having been named to the position in April 2011. Year School Overall MEAC In 10 seasons as a collegiate head coach at Alcorn State, 2010 South Carolina State 17-23 6-2 North Carolina A&T and most recently at South Carolina 2009 South Carolina State 13-20 4-4 State, Sylvan-Van Norden has amassed a career record of 2008 South Carolina State 13-22 5-3 171-182, earning 20 wins in a season three times and receiv- 2007 South Carolina State 8-23 1-7 ing two Coach of the Year honors. 2006 North Carolina A&T 17-14 7-3 Sylvan-Van Norden spent the previous four seasons at 2005 North Carolina A&T 22-18 9-1 South Carolina State where she transformed the Bulldogs 2004 North Carolina A&T 10-20 7-3 from the bottom of the conference to a Mid-Eastern Athletic 2003 Alcorn State 14-27 -Conference Tournament championship last season. South 2002 Alcorn State 29-12 -Carolina State finished the 2010 season with a 6-2 confer2001 Alcorn State 28-3 -ence record after posting a 1-7 MEAC record in her first TOTALS 171-182 39-23 season in 2007. Her Bulldogs rolled through the conference tournament and defeated Delaware State 3-1 to earn the school’s first championship since the 1990 season. South Carolina State advanced to the NCAA Tournament where it met top-ranked Florida in the first round. Sylvan-Van Norden led South Carolina State to a .500, or better, record in conference play in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons. She was named the MEAC Coach of the Year in 2008. Prior to her stint at South Carolina State, Sylvan-Van Norden was the head coach at North Carolina A&T for three seasons. She compiled an overall record of 49-52 and was 23-7 in the MEAC and was named the conference Coach of the Year in 2005 after guiding the Aggies to a 9-1 record. Sylvan-Van Norden began her coaching career at her alma mater Alcorn State. In three seasons, she posted a record of 71-42 and won two Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division titles and made two SWAC Tournament championship match appearances. Sylvan-Van Norden was a highly decorated student-athlete at Alcorn State where she earned letters in volleyball and track and field. On the volleyball court she was a two-time All-SWAC selection and was named the pre-season volleyball SWAC Player of the Year in 2000. On the track, Sylvan-Van Norden was a 2000 USA Track and Field Indoor National Participant and a provisional qualifier in the long jump and the 100-meter hurdles in that same year. She currently owns the school and SWAC record in the heptathlon with 5,071 points. During her time as a student-athlete she was a member several student organizations including the NCAA StudentAthlete Advisory Committee, SWAC Student-Athlete Association and the Alcorn State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A four-year SWAC scholar athlete, Sylvan-Van Norden was a two-time recipient of the NCAA Leadership Award and a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar Athlete Award in 2000. She earned both her bachelor’s in education (2000), and a master’s degree in secondary education (2003) from Alcorn State. Sylvan-Van Norden is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and USA Volleyball. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and was involved in the NYSP Extended program. She is married to Allen Van Norden who is the director of strength and conditioning at Coppin State. They have three children, Christian (7), Cain (2) and Loki (18 mo.).

Indira Laurencin Assistant Coach First Season Coppin State ‘07 Former Coppin State standout Indira Laurencin enters her ďŹ rst season as an assistant coach on the Coppin State coaching staff. Laurencin ranks as one of the top offensive players in Coppin State history. She stands fourth in kills in Coppin State history and is the all-time leader averaging 3.57 kills per set. She also ranks second in career blocks and third in career hitting percentage. She also had 412 kills during the 2006 season, which ranks second in CSU single-season history and holds the school record with 105 blocks and 3.85 blocks per set. Laurencin also competed for the Coppin State track and ďŹ eld team where she advanced to the NCAA East Regional in the 200 meters in 2008.
