By: Rose Luzader In light of the most recent SED convention, as well as being a brother of the host chapter, it is only fair that the rest of the district gets to hear the trials as well as the treasures we experienced in the last year. To start off, one year ago I was a candidate at SED 2012 in Orlando. I knew we were putting in a bid to host the convention the following year and that the rest of the district would have liked to move Tallahassee, and that is it. From the moment we received the bid to host the convention dreams immediately became plans and hopes became stress. Seeing the two organizations, which during my candidacy seemed so different, come together for one common goal was one of the things that moved me most as a candidate. It was the one thing that made me realize that “If and When” I was to be initiated I would not only gain 32 fantastic brothers, but also 34 sisters. The year in between receiving the bid and the start date of the convention was so easy it was easy for me to question whether we were doing everything right. But low and behold, it was actually that easy. It took some planning as well as a lot of communication, but nothing

nearly as trying as I would have assumed. We made the perfect convention in our plans, and as we ran into troubles we made compromises. We made committees of brother and sisters, only strengthening the bonds that this convention had already been fostering. Finally, the day came that we had been planning for a year. And it seemed to fall apart in our hands. Although nothing of that extent ever happened, we were forced to give up our plans that had been in the making for a year because of forces we could never had controlled. With typos in the program, running out of shirts, room relocations, and over 200 people signing up for reading band it seemed like everything had almost literally hit the fan. But with all the blowups, freak outs, and just over all complaining we somehow formed a relationship we had never truly seen. Passing the blame, getting in fights, and being there when each other broke down. And that newfound relationship is worth more than any convention to me and my brothers and sisters. We realized the “Unbreakable Bond” that UCF talked so much about and came to cherish it in one weekend. Oh and at the same time, we happened to host a pretty killer convention in my opinion. By: Sam Sugerman Making the decision to rush any organization takes a fair amount of thought: You question whether you’re good enough; whether the brothers and sisters will like you; whether they’ll see enough potential in you to give you a bid. Or maybe not, maybe you just want to see what everything is about and meet some cool people. Either way, rush week is that week of first impressions as well as the time to make that initial impact on those who would potentially become your brothers or sisters. The week is full of fun activities and bonding experiences - from playing pool, to bowling, to formal and informal rush. As a potential candidate, this can feel a bit daunting considering this is the prime time to get to know everyone. The excitement builds with each event, until it’s finally time for bids to be distributed. For me, those days of anticipation before receiving a bid were absolute torture. So many thoughts were running through my head as I went over the past week, and I couldn’t help but to second-guess myself. Just like the other potentials, I wanted this so, so badly. The moment I found out I had been given a bid, I was beyond thankful and excited, and I couldn’t wait to start the journey we all know as candidacy. Candidacy is something all brothers and sisters experience, and each experience is unique and different for every candidate. Going through candidacy was most definitely one of the best and most difficult times of my college career. My candidate brother class was – and is – rather large: there are nine of us! And I feel so undeniably lucky to have gone through candidacy with these eight other people. Most of us had gone into candidacy not really having known each other, but by the end, we had formed such a strong bond. Candidacy is what we make of it. This is a time of growth, introspection, and a time to learn. With each lesson, we learn about our organization, and in that learn a little bit more about ourselves. We are given these requirements that are meant to push our boundaries and enhance our skills through hard work and a whole lot of determination. We carry around our black books, eager to interview each active member and dig a little deeper. Every time we are pushed, we grow through our strengths and acknowledge our weaknesses. And through all of this, we have each other. I experienced so many emotions during candidacy that I can’t even begin to explain. I finally felt as if I had found my place and my people; never before had I been surrounded by so many individuals with such a love for music and the bands, let alone a love for each other. This love is what bonds everyone together, no matter our differences. Finally being able to call ourselves brothers is extremely rewarding. We wear our letters wherever, whenever, and with great pride. I came out of candidacy with more faith in myself, and a greater sense of awareness among so many other aspects, and I can only hope future candidates gain from candidacy what we - and all of the other candidate classes - were able to gain from this experience.
