GOLDEN JUBILEE YEARYEAR- 2011 Year of Social Equity and Sustainable Development

1. INTRODUCTION Malankara Social Service Society (MSSS) is the development and social work organ of the Catholic Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. MSSS is registered in 1961, under the Travancore-Cochin Literary Scientific and Charitable Societies Act XII of 1955 of the Indian Union. It is active as an organization promoting socio-economic development of the weaker sections for the past 50 years. MSSS has established the identity among the people, Catholic Church, government institutions and other development agencies as an organization committed to work for the weaker and marginalized. 6. FOCAL THEME OF THE YEAR 2011

The continued and committed efforts for the upliftment of marginalized and downtrodden in the community for the last fifty years, Malankara Social Service Society felt the need to concentrate more on the focal theme “Social Equity and Sustainable Development “during the Golden Jubilee Year. The incorporation of this focal theme with various developments interventions of the organization will enhance our concern to embed developing standards and quality services to the target groups with an equitable and sustainable development approach . 6.(A) SOCIAL EQUITY In spite of the development efforts taken up in the last few years, both in India and at the global level, chronic poverty remains a major challenge to the humanity. The associated problems such as inequality, violence, unemployment and exploitation are on the increase. The traditional definition of measuring poverty in terms of calorie intake has not been useful in combating poverty and unemployment. The much-discussed definition of Amartya Sen on poverty that it is deprivation of opportunities and freedom for development has shed new insights in tackling the developmental issues that affect the poorest. This new understanding that poverty and backwardness are closely linked to deprivations has again enlightened the development practitioners on who are all deprived and on what basis they are deprived. The existing social relations, institutions, structures, customs and practices determine the rights and entitlements of an individual and that determine the success or failure of an individual in having access to the resources and services in a society. Discriminations on the basis of identities (sex, caste, age, health) leads to social exclusion and can lock people into long-term poverty traps. In the society, particular groups of people are systematically excluded from opportunities for development that are open to others. The exclusion takes place based on specific identities that bind a group such as caste, race, religion, ethnicity, social origin, gender, age, disability, migrant status, sexual orientation and other identities. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Golden Jubilee Year 1961-2011 Equity derives from a concept of social justice. It represents a belief that there are some things which people should have, that there are basic needs that should be fulfilled, that burdens and rewards should not be spread too divergently across the community, and that policy should be directed with impartiality, fairness and justice towards these ends. Social Equity implies fair access to livelihood, education, and resources; full participation in the political and cultural life of the community; and self-determination in meeting Fundamental Needs Social Equity is committed to bringing development projects into the framework of an inclusive approach at all levels namely conceiving, planning, designing, implementing, and monitoring. It is expected to build a wider platform to bring the actors of social equity together in order to further the goal of inclusion. It is envisaged to enable the communities to challenge and question the mainstreamed models of development that result in massive exclusions, especially in the context of globalization. Under this influence, the communities will be able to involve in a perennial process of engagement with systems, power structures and patterns of development in order to bring the equity perspective into the centre stage. Equity means that there should be a minimum level of income and environmental quality below which nobody falls. Within a community, it usually also means that everyone should have equal access to community resources and opportunities, and that no individuals or groups of people should be asked to carry a greater environmental burden than the rest of the community. It is generally agreed that equity implies a need for fairness (not necessarily equality) in the distribution of gains and losses, and the entitlement of everyone to an acceptable quality and standard of living.

6. (B) SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: the concept of needs, needs in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Malankara Social Service Society

7

Golden Jubilee Year 1961-2011 Sustainable Development is the environmental, economic and social well-being for today and tomorrow The concept of development includes respect for all human rights, civil, political, economic, social and cultural, as an inherent and constitutive part of development, not a contingent aspect, nor even an instrumental dimension. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that the ‘recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world’. The greater the inequality, the less the “trickle-down” effect and the more the abuse of human rights. Poverty and inequality inhibit growth, depress domestic demand, hinder national economic development and infringes on basic human rights for a decent living and for freedom from want. Equitable social development can however enhance human dignity and curb the sheer structural distortions of biased policies and institutions that produce exclusion, marginalization, and vulnerability, a serious time threat for any protection, promotion or upholding of basic human rights for development.

MSSS STRIVES TO ACHIEVE ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL EQUITY STANDARDS THROUGH ITS VARIOUS VARIOUS SOCIO SOCIO-ECONOMICECONOMIC-POLITICAL EMPOWERMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PROGRAMMES BY INCULCATING INCULCATING THE ORGANIZATIONAL COMPETENCIES COMPETENCIES AT THE SELF HELP GROUP LEVEL TO THE CENTRAL LEVEL.
