When the compression of air reaches a specific point, fuel is injected and ignited with the heat of the compressed air. This is the point when compression stroke works to bring the piston down. Again when the piston moves to the top, the exhaust created is pushed out in the exhaust stroke. Since the fuel is directly injected and ignited due to the compressed air, there is no spark plug in diesel engine trucks. In the truck diesel engines, fuel is injected into the cylinder directly. This injector is the most complicated part of the truck diesel engine. For placing it in the right location, a lot of experiments are carried out because it should cope up with the temperature and pressure of the compressed air inside the cylinder. At the same time, it should perform its duty of injecting the fuel at the right moment. To distribute the diesel mist evenly in the cylinder, in some engines, specially designed induction valves and other devices like pre-combustion chambers are used. ECM with the help of sensors is the controller of almost all the functions in a diesel engine, right from monitoring the R.P.M., engine coolant and oil temperatures to determining the engine position. In a cold weather, when the outside air is cold, the ECM retards the timing of the engine suitably so that the fuel is injected a little later when the compressed air develops more heat than in normal weather conditions. Diesel Fuel is heavier and oilier than gasoline and also evaporates more slowly. Diesel is got by a less refining process than gasoline and hence it is cheaper. But the energy density is higher.
