First, the room must be zoned according to function—here a sitting area and dining area occupy each end of a large open-plan space. Zones can be subtly divided from one another by screens, as shown here, or by other pieces of furniture.

This then determines where the key pieces of furniture in each zone will go—in this case, the dining table and chairs, the generous seating, and the coffee table. Zoning also signposts where lights, power points, electrical cabling, light switches, and other essentials are needed.

Make sure you have left enough space for the flow around the room and between pieces of furniture.

Be aware that the grid is made up of both vertical and horizontal lines, and consider how to emphasize these.

Left Developed as the Urban concept for Yoo, this scheme features taupe with red accents and a dark-stained wood floor, resulting in a crisp, monochromatic base that lets the eye flow with ease from one area of the room to the other. The leather-upholstered furniture, hair-on-hide stool, cut-out screen, white-lacquered coffee table, and trunk side tables are all from the Kelly Hoppen range. The large bronze-and-crystal light by Ochre provides an essential link between the adjacent living and dining zones, echoing the style and shape of the lights hung over the dining table.
