Local Entrepreneur crowned as Agriculture’s

Most Influential Woman Jacky Goliath, managing director of De Fynne Nursery, walked away with the coveted title as South Africa and Southern Africa’s Most Influential Woman for 2014 in the agricultural sector at a gala event on 30 July held at Gallagher Estate in Midrand, Johannesburg. The annual event was hosted by CEO Communications and acknowledges women in Africa from across all sectors and their contributions to society. The guest speaker was South Africa’s Public Protector, advocate Thuli Madonsela who was last year’s overall winner. Jacky started De Fynne in 2001 with business partner Elton Jefthas with only 1000 plants in Elton’s backyard in Kylemore. Water restrictions came into effect at the time, and they realised there was a gap in the market for water-wise plants, and decided to use their skills and background in horticulture to plug that gap. They had no business loans or donations – they paid for everything out of their own pockets. Thirteen years later, De Fynne Nursery has moved from a 1,5 hectare premises to

a 22-hectare farm in Paarl, and currently produces over 600 000 plants - these include Fynbos such as proteas and pincushions, as well as fruit bearing plants. They now also produce and export plums. This is not the first award for Jacky. She was Agricultural Female Entrepreneur for 2012 (Western Cape and National), Agribusiness Entrepreneur in Africa (2012) as well as finalist in the Toyota New Harvest (2013). All these awards would not have been possible if it was not for a committed team, management staff and a business partner that works equally hard. Hard work pays off,” she says. “As Managing Director I see myself as the leader of the pack. It is therefore my duty and responsibility to set the pace and standard for my staff and business practices. My thinking is shaped by a vision of a better life for all. Coming from a rural and previously disadvantaged area, I feel it is important to assist with the development of talent of other people with a similar background.” “Being a female MD in this male-dominated industry hasn’t been easy, though. If you look at the nursery business, which is also

Annelize Wepener (CEO of CEO Communications), Commander Tsietsi Mokhele (CEO of SAMSA), Yvonne Finch (Chairperson of judging panel) and Winner Jacky Goliath (SA’s Most Influential Woman in Agriculture for 2014)

linked to the agricultural sector, you’ll find that a lot of MDs of these businesses are men. It was very challenging and I had to stand up for myself, but also be cautious not to come on too strong.” As Most Influential Woman in South Africa and Southern

Africa Region, Jacky now will compete for the title of the our continent’s Most Influential Woman of which the winner will be announced on 30 October this year. Congratulations and good luck Jacky!
