Their Stories

Stubbs Stumps Perceptions Winston Stubbs from Pniël was recently appointed as Inas Sports Director for Cricket. Inas is the International Federation for Sport for Para-athletes with an intellectual disability. Winston was officially welcomed to his new position at the organisation’s General Assembly, held in Rio de Janeiro at the end of April. His involvement with cricket for the disabled has been nothing short of remarkable. It started 18 years ago and it was purely by accident that he got to work with intellectually disabled children. At the beginning of 1995, Winston was a very despondent man. He had just finished his three year teaching diploma, applied for more than 40 teaching posts, but was not successful with any of them. He decided to go back to technicon to further his studies, but on that Sunday evening while he was getting ready for another year of commuting between Pniël and Bellville, his life took an unexpected turn. He received a visit from the late mr Gerald Lackay, at the time principal of Dorothea School for the Disabled in Cloetesville. Mr Lackay offered Winston a three month temporary teaching position at the school. Having preconceived ideas about disabled children, he couldn’t see himself teaching at the school, but said he’ll sleep on it. He clearly recalls the sequence of events: “There was (and still is) a stigma attached to disabled children. The ‘normal’ people thought these kids were crazy and uncontrollable. The next morning however, I hesitantly decided to give it a go and was all dressed up. At the school’s entrance gate I changed my mind and wanted to turn away. The principal saw me and after long negotiations, which included going

back home and dress more comfortably, I decided to give it a chance,” says Winston. On that very first day he saw learners playing cricket in the school yard. He joined them and later found out that there was no formal cricket structure at the school or any other school for the disabled. He immediately took up the challenge and vowed to fight for the formal recognition of cricket for the disabled. His initial three month contract at Dorothea became six years. Ten years after playing cricket with the learners at the school, the first biennial tri-nations cricket tournament between South Africa, Australia and New Zealand was played in Cape Town – mostly due to Winston’s determination and sacrifices.   It was no easy path. He first had to convince other schools to take up the sport, establish a formal competition between the schools, arrange a provincial tournament, expand the initiative to other provinces, arrange a national competition and convince other countries to do likewise. The biggest challenge however, was to convince ‘normal’ people in the cricket mainstream that there is no such thing as disabled cricket. “You

don’t get a disabled cricket bat, ball or helmet. Intellectually disabled people use

the same cricket equipment as any other player and they play by the same rules and adhere to the same code of conduct. So why call it disabled cricket? It should be cricket played by disabled people,” he says passionately. After many presentations and meetings with various parties, Winston slowly convinced others that cricket should be made accessible to anyone, irrespective of their ability. In the end he even served on the board of Cricket South Africa (CSA), representing the disabled and receiving the very first Associate Membership for disabled athletes from any sports governing body.

SO UTH A F RIC A

Above: Winston Stubbs in his Protea blazer and tie, representing the disabled on the CSA Board. Right: With his family, from left Kayleigh, Kirston, Taymore and wife, Denise. With Dr Peter Cyster also representing Western Province, Pniël therefore had two members on South Africa’s national body for many years. His latest appointment will see him developing cricket structures and creating awareness for the disabled in countries such as Pakistan, India, New Zealand, West India and many others. His challenge is to help these countries develop a plan to play international cricket within 2 to 3 years. Cricket for the intellectually disabled became a passion for Winston and even after his years at Dorothea, he continued with this charitable work. Luckily he receives good support from his employers, British American Tobacco South Africa, where he has been working in the marketing department since 2001. “I sacrificed my holidays for cricket,” he

The position at Inas is voluntary and he doesn’t receive any financial rewards. “To see how cricket uplifts the intellectually disabled and restores their human dignity, is enough reward for me,” he says. “We all go through life just once and we have this one opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life - establishing a positive change.” Winston has definitely made a positive change in many people’s lives. This was perfectly summarised a few years ago by the CEO of CSA when he told Winston: “You have changed the face of international cricket.” Well deserved, Winston!

Congratulations! Winston Stubbs - you are an exemplary member of the BAT South Africa team. With your unique strength and experience, you showed how one can turn challenges into opportunities.

Bartender of the Year (again!) Adri received a $5,000 cheque and an etched glass trophy for her winning entry. She also received the “People’s Choice Award” which was voted by guests attending the annual event. This year the competition attracted a record 2,800 entries from bartenders and chefs throughout the cruise industry. Ford earned her second Bartender of the Year award for creating the Bacardi Caribbean Hideaway, a refreshing cocktail featuring Bacardi’s Oakheart rum, which was the required ingredient for the signature cocktail category.  “I’m immensely proud to see talent like Adri emerging and receiving the accolades she

deserves,” says Zachary Sulkes, Regional Manager, Bacardi Travel Retail Americas.

Adri Ford from Cloetesville, a bartender at the Alchemy Bar aboard the Carnival Conquest cruise ship, has been named “Bartender of the Year” at the annual Bacardi Cruise Competition for the second consecutive year.

Adri has been with Carnival for three years, including the past six months at Carnival Conquest’s Alchemy Bar, a cocktail pharmacy-themed lounge where bartenders in lab coats “prescribe” custom cocktails that feature unique ingredients and are divided into fun categories like Mood Enhancers, Fountain of Youth and Relief for What Ails.  Patrons can even fill out a prescription pad and create their own tailor-made concoctions. “Food and drink have always been my passions, and as a young girl I dreamt of being a chef. Good food, good wine and great company makes me happy,” Adri says. She sees herself as a people-person and lists her parents (Keith and Avril Ford) as the most important in her life.

Helena Susanna Magdalena Adams 27 SEPTEMBER 1934 - 11 MAART 2013

Google sê Kitty beteken "from the Greek name Aikaterina, meaning pure/ clean. People with this name tend to be a powerful force; they are capable and charismatic leaders. They value truth justice and discipline". ‘n Beskrywing wat haar leefwyse perfek beskryf. Sy was so welbekend dat haar van totaal oorbodig was, amper soos Madonna. ‘n Ster in eie reg – ‘n ware legende.

Vir my was sy net my ouma en sy was ‘cool and savvy’. As ouma ‘n leuse moes hê sou dit seker lui: “Ek lewe my lewe soos ek daarvan hou.”

Hierdie

Illegal speed camera: Feedback from Municipality I have received a complaint about speed camera at Helshoogte road, where the complainant alleged we are charging members of the public illegal. In the same letter of the Complainant it is stated very clear by the complainant that she/he was traveling from Cluver road and turning right into Helshoogte road. This specific section of the road is still within the built up area. As result of that, it is categorized as an urban area. That is the sufficient reason not to display any road sign as suggested by the complainant. The complainant must always remember the fact that the maximum speed she/he can drive within an urban area is 60 km/h unless indicated differently. The complainant must bear in mind of the fact that as she/he was traveling from Cluver road into Helshoogte road where there is no speed camera sign or signs displayed which authorizes her/him to increase the speed from 60 km/h per hour except the one which is ahead of the area where the offence took place. However if the complainant was traveling from western side of Helshoogte she/he was going to be able to see the speed sign displayed within the reasonable distance before she/he reaches the area of camera deployment. - Mr Ayanda Royi (Head: Traffic Department, Stellenbosch Municipality)

New Head for Oprah’s School After an international search, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) appointed a new Head of the Academy.

Melvin will take office at the school in Henley on Klip near Meyerton, south of Johannesburg, in 2014 after the retirement of present headmistress Anne van Zyl. The father of two and “a born and bred Capetonian” said the selection process had included interviews in South Africa before shortlisted candidates went to New York where they also met Winfrey. “It was a pretty rigorous experience,” he said. He was educated at St Owen’s Boys (Marist) High School in Cape Town and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Social Science Degree and Teaching Diploma as well a Diploma in Leadership Development from the Wits Graduate School of Business. He was a teacher at Livingstone High School, Cape Town, for fifteen years and also became Deputy Head.  In 2001 he left to become the founding Academic Head and Executive Director of Christel House South Africa.

He is the Deputy Chairman of the Franschhoek Schools Transformation Project and the Franschhoek Valley Charter Trust. In looking forward to leading the community at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, Melvin  believes that “the old and deeply internalised stories of inferiority and superiority that have undermined learning for all South Africans must be replaced by a new story of who we are and what we can become.  Every child deserves to have a seat at the table and through a culture of human rights, access to education, hard work and accountability, we will build a better nation for all, where the dignity of every person is upheld.”  Congratulations Melvin!

Op die Pad met

CL 1

BURGEMEESTER C O N RAD S I D E G O

Fantasie? Drome?

NOTIFICATION OF PUBLIC MEETING UPDATE OF THE OPERATING LICENCE STRATEGY (OLS) DOCUMENT AS WELL AS THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT RECORD (CPTR) WHICH FORMS PART OF THE COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATED TRANSPORT PLAN (CITP) PROCESS FOR THE STELLENBOSCH AND FRANSCHHOEK LOCAL MUNICIPALITY

Miskien.

You are invited to attend a public meeting to give your input on the Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Integrated Transport Plan with regard to the transport and traffic needs in your area.

WHAT IS THE INTEGRATED TRANSPORT PLAN (ITP)? It is a five year municipal transport plan to identify projects and programmes to address the transport needs of the community. The ITP is updated annually. The purpose of the public meeting is to acquire information so that the ITP can be accurately updated for the area.

Providing your inputs and comments are important so that transport problems in your area are noted and addressed in the ITP.

Closing the tap on Alcohol and Drug Abuse

Photo: DTTC

On Saturday, 11 May, the Franschhoek Rural Development Forum in conjunction with the municipalities of Stellenbosch and Cape Winelands, Cape Pine and the Provincial Department of Community Development, launched a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Programme in Wemmershoek. Drug Use and Alcohol Abuse are the two main culprits in breaking down our rural

communities. It is therefore imperative that something needed to be done to avoid our rural communities from falling deeper and deeper into the claws of these evils. The youth of Wemmershoek listened attentively while Mr Desmond Manual, a drug abuse survivor, gave testimony. Me Bonita Davids from the Department of Social Development also explained the negative impacts of alcohol and drug abuse to the youth. Article by: Frederick Fischer

And the winner is: Magdalene (second from left) upon hearing that she will visit Washington.

The HPTN held its Annual Meeting from 3 to 8 May and Magdalene received valuable training which she now has to share with other community health committees. The HPTN in partnership with the Desmond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC), part of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Stellenbosch University, is funding an initiative called PopART (Population Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy to reduce HIV Transmissions).

Through PopART, nine clinics in the Western Cape and 12 in Zambia were identified in a study that ultimately aims to bring down the rate of HIV infections in South Africa and Zambia. It will investigate whether providing a combination of HIV treatment and prevention interventions to communities will better prevent the spread of HIV than the standard methods that are offered today. Cloetesville Clinic is one of the nine clinics and Magdalene was chosen as representative through a lucky draw. Magdalene is also a ward committee member for Ward 16.

Annual Parish Dance

The All Saints, St Marks and St Nicholas Catholic communities recently staged their annual dance in the Stellenbosch Town Hall.

The dance was a huge success and has become one of the most popular events on the Stellenbosch social calendar. Here are some of the patrons having a ball!

Pniël Primary’s under 13 soccer team received jerseys, scarves and golf shirts from the English Premier League team, Fulham. This donation was made possible by Peter Barnes from Oxford who is a season ticket holder at Craven Cottage (home of Fulham). Through the facilitation of Neville Wilson and Pearl Mansfield (parent) the kit was delivered to Pniël Primary on 29 May.

Rohan was die afgelope 8 jaar engelse onderwyser waar hy verantwoordelik was vir sokker.

Pniël in Fulham colours: The under 13 team with their new kit. At the back from left is Pearl Mansfield (parent), Neville and Caryn Wilson (facilitators) and William Swartz (teacher and coach)

Youth

BTT invests in Youth Development As part of a comprehensive social development strategy for the Dwars River Valley, the BTT has appointed youth volunteers from the valley through an intensive recruitment process.

Youth Volunteers ready for the challenge From left: David van Wyk, Ilse Johnson, Lydia Malan and Charles Quint (BTT Administrator)

The young volunteers will be tasked to do comprehensive research about challenges faced by young people. They must develop creative and relevant programs that will assist the BTT and other partners to address issues such as poverty, unemployment and substance abuse in Lanquedoc, Kylemore, Pniël, Johannesdal and Meerlust. The volunteers have already started to draw up a profile of the various communities and have presented it at the Trust's biweekly social interactive sessions. This has provided a basic understanding about each village in relation to backyard-dwelling, overcrowding, lack of housing, number of dwellings and population-estimates. A full profile will be done in collaboration with the Informal Settlement Department of Stellenbosch Municipality. This profile will be published for public benefit and learners at our schools will have access to basic information about their communities.

Another key element of the program is the mentoring of youngsters. This is aimed at providing community-based support for children, especially those facing serious challenges in their own homes. The volunteers will act as role-models and change-agents in a way that will inspire young people to embrace behaviour modification.

The group has planned a youth festival for this month (see opposite page). Other activities to follow will include talkshows, competitions, community-based work, sports events, talent shows and cultural events. The youth volunteers will inform Riviernuus readers on their progress on a regular basis.

Baie geluk Damien!

IDP Youth Outreach Programme The Stellenbosch Municipality have recently concluded the IDP community engagements in all the wards and is now planning to host an IDP Youth Outreach Programme during the month of June. The purpose of this programme is to introduce the IDP to the youth of Stellenbosch at an earlier age and to foster a better understanding of municipal processes in order to create better participation and involvement in the IDP public meetings for the future. Below are the dates for this programme. Wade Thys has been tasked to coordinate this whole programme and he can be contacted on 021 808 8159 or 082 387 9626.

Politiek Pollie sê

Grafiek onder: Die Rand Dollar Wisselkoers oor die laaste 30 Jaar

AANGERAND! Hallo Riviermense!

Sy bekende gesegde was “I am a forthright soldier, if I believe something is evil, I say so.”

10 April was vir my ‘n baie emosionele dag.

“I am a forthright soldier, if I believe something is evil, I say so.”

Chris, Hamba kahle my brother and comrade. Aluta Continua!

Kylemore hosts Welsh The Welsh rugby club, Llandaff, played Kylemore Rugby Club in a friendly on Saturday, 24 May, as part of their two match Cape Town tour. According to Club President, Mr Nigel Perris, Llandaff is in Cardiff and is referred to as a city within a city. “We compete in Division 4 of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and have just finished our season in third place. We regularly tour after our season and have visited USA twice, Canada three times and this is our second visit to South Africa but our first to Cape Town,” he says. The 42 Welshmen were in the Western Cape for 11 days and also played Temperance Rugby Club. They visited various sites in and around Cape Town with the Winelands high up on their list. Unfortunately they lost their game against Kylemore, but gave very good account of themselves despite arriving in the country less than 24 hours before kick-off. There was no evidence of any jet lag or match fatigue at the post-match function, arranged for them by the host club. Apparently the function went on much later than expected, with great camaraderie formed between north and south. In true Welsh fashion, the touring party also showed why Wales have some of the best male choirs in the world!

Post match celebrations on the field

Spotted in the Valley Berries before the Storm: Quade Cooper, Queensland Reds and Australian flyhalf, took some time off rugby and visited the Dwars River Valley on Saturday, 25 May, before their game against the Stormers.

during the 2013 season.

Following relegation from Super League B to Premier League A (third division) last season, Pniël Villagers are in tough draws with the likes of Sir Lowrians, St. Georges, Collegians, Kraaifontein, Macassar and Rangers. Villagers will find it difficult but should pose a huge threat and indeed stiff competition for the other nine in Premier League A.

Lanquedoc with their two teams (All Stars RFC and Lanquedoc RFC) will once again have divided loyalty! All Stars have been promoted to the Langeberg League in the Boland and the extensive traveling could have a huge influence on their performances. Lanquedoc RFC will also struggle a bit and serious consideration should be given to combine these two clubs. Together they will be much stronger.

Stellenbosch Coronations will look to bounce back, which will pose to be a huge challenge for them as they were relegated yet again from Premier League B to Division 1 in 2012, after having competed in Premier League A in 2011. This should be a season where the boys from Ida's Valley will have to find their feet, if they are to bounce back at all

Kylemore, competing in Division 2, will definitely be contenders for league honours. Division 3 will be tougher this year with most clubs finding their feet.

Current log standings: Pniël Villagers: 9th in Premier League A Stellenbosch Coronations: 7th in Division 1 Kylemore: 5th in Division 2 Cloetesville: 5th in Division 3 Lanquedoc All Stars: 6’th in Langeberg Region Lanquedoc RFC: 6’th in WP Simonsberg League

At Rivendell we pride our horses not only for their beauty and quality but for their temperament, ridability and spirit. Our wide range of stallions also ensures we have something to suit your needs, whether you are looking for a top eventer, a dressage champion or a steady all rounder.

With the use of not only imported warmblood stallions but also some of South Africa's finest Thoroughbred bloodlines, Rivendell is producing young horses that were born to be athletes and if produced correctly they will without doubt compete on an international level.

"Cricket isn't just a game... It's a way of life".

Gholf

Make your hobby your job and you’ll never work a day in your life’,” sê hy. Geluk Louis!
