The luck of the Irish PniĂŤl and Kylemore rugby clubs combine in historic match “It took a club from Ireland to bring PniĂŤl and Kylemore together.â€? These were the words of Austin Hewitson OBE, past president of Banbridge Rugby Club, after the historic match on 21 August in which PniĂŤl and Kylemore combined forces against Banbridge. The match which took place on Kylemore Sports Ground delivered very entertaining rugby and in a nail-biting finish, the men from Northern Ireland narrowly lost 3239. The home team started very strong and one could hardly believe that they only practised the day prior to this match. The Irish team fought back well and their forwards dominated the last quarter of the game. Banbridge, who plays in the Ulster Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union, won promotion to League 2A last season and according to club president, Stephen Cross, they wanted to start this season strong, hence the tour to rugby mad South Africa. This was Banbridge’s second match of their South African tour. They narrowly lost 22-

International bonds: Players from the Irish rugby club, Banbridge, bonding with the players from PniĂŤl and Kylemore. 31 against False Bay in their first match, but came good against Kraaifontein 35-12, in the third. ‘The luck of the Irish’ is a common saying associated with bad luck, but judging from

everyone’s comments after the game, this Irish team might just have brought some good luck to the Dwars River Valley. They gave us a glimpse of what can be achieved when combining forces. It is also ironically appropriate that a team called Banbridge

acted as 'bridge' between these two proud local rugby clubs. Thank you Banbridge. May you experience a great season in your new league. See further article on page 11.

Van ons kant

Ek is in ‘n huis gebore!

ICA 01&/%": Riviernuus staff was recently invited to attend the Institute of Culinary Arts (ICA) Open Day at their premises in Banhoek.

Nie in ‘n hospitaal of kliniek soos my ouer suster Jocelyn nie. Om presies te wees: Ek was in ‘n donker kamertjie in ouma Henna (my pa se ma) se huis gebore. Dit was dan ook vir lank my susters se bynaam aan my: Donker Kamertjie!

The friendly ICA staff briefed the guests on the different things one can do with salt – even frying fish on a block of salt. Below see some of the scrumptious dishes that were on offer.

SALTED CUCUMBER Pickled cucumber & goat's cheese bitterballen and vegetable terrine with olive tapanade butter, served with pickled cucumber ribbons & cucumber granitĂŠ and garnished with Khoisan salt pearls.

SALT & VINEGAR Salt & pepper squid in a cone and salt block-fried fish served with salt & vinegar ice cream with a potato galett and garnished with Khoisan salt flakes.

So my geboorte was ‘n hele familie affĂŞre! Mooi bly!

FROM LONDON, WITH LOVE

Dear Residents of the Dwars River Valley, I just wanted to say baie, baie dankie and enkosi for the warm welcome and hospitality you have shown me during my stay in the valley. The days just flew past! I finished my research at the end of August and I have now returned to London. It is summer here in the north, but I am missing the clear crisp air, the beautiful smiles, and the open-hearted way of my new friends and neighbours across the valley.

ons op

As many of you know, I spent 2 months listening to the thoughts of people about poverty in the area and how it affects the health and wellbeing of children. I must now spend time studying what I have learned so that I may understand it better. I will keep in touch, and I will let you know what I have found by a series of articles in the Riviernuus. I hope that what you have taught me will also be of benefit to you as you work to make the community prosperous, peaceful, and united. Your resilience and generosity are a lesson for the entire world. Spring was in the air when I left, and in a few short weeks the trees will be green and the flowers in bloom. Wishing you a wonderful summer season, and speak to you soon! - Ayesha Kadir

40 JAAR GELEDE:

“Die Here sal jou wys waar.â€?

“Maar my ^%#&* Jimmy!

Lecelin en Lazanne is egter weer by Stellenbosch Hospitaal gebore.

COMMUNITY

DID YOU KNOW It is generally assumed that Paralympics means disabled people. This perception is not true as the word Para is of Greek origin meaning beside or alongside. The name was therefore given to indicate that the Paralympics runs alongside the Olympic Games and does not have any association with the word disabled. Just like a paramedic means someone that works alongside a doctor.

Well done to Team South Africa for bringing home all the medals! We are extremely proud of you.

'N NUWE HUIS VIR LINDZAY 4 ) " / " L A C K AY

My geloof in God het wondere verrig," se 'n dankbare Liezl.

A South African Education delegation, consisting of eight local South African school principals and two WCED officials from the Cape Winelands Education District, has just returned from a very successful fact-finding visit to China. The delegation, consisting of principals at whose schools Mandarin is taught as an extra-mural subject, were invited by Prof George Xie of the Confucius Institute of the University of Stellenbosch, and the Institute’s head office in Beijing, to visit China. The delegation consisted of Dr Brian Wilson (Head of Curriculum: CWED), Mr Johann Burger (Deputy Chief Education Specialist) and the following principals: Mr Eddy Adam (JJ Rhode Primary School), Mr Lance Cyster (Wes-Eind Primary School), Mr Adam de Vries (Kylemore High School), Mr Clive Hendricks (Lßckhoff High School), Ms Lucy Mbenenge (Dalubuhle Primary School), Mr Ruben November (PniÍl Primary School), Ms Glynes Rippenaar (St Idas RC Primary School) and Mr Charl Schoeman (Worcester Gymnasium). These principals were accompanied to China and back by Prof Frank Wang of the Confucius Institute, who acted both as a guide and a translator.

The South Africans started their tour in Beijing. The leader of the delegation, Dr Brian Wilson, addressed the senior staff at the Head Office of the Confucius Institute in Beijing, the University of Xiamen (near Taiwan) and at schools in Xiamen City. The main purpose was to build bridges between South Africa and China, based on an understanding of both countries’ languages, cultures and potential economic cooperation. The delegation was given the opportunity to examine the Chinese educational system and their best practices. What most impressed the delegation was the Chinese work ethic, their 21st century educational curriculum, the learners’ discipline (they know from a young age what vocation they will be pursuing one day), the ultramodern infrastructure and the commitment and dedication of the Chinese teachers. After official engagements, the delegation was treated to true Chinese hospitality, cuisine, taken to visit the Great Wall of China, the Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and the ancient settlement of Fujian Tulou in the mountainous area of China. The visit to China will be followed by a Chinese delegation visit to Stellenbosch in October 2012. - Article by Johan Burger

Bome. 1 September is wel bekend as lentedag. 1-7 September bekend staan as boomplantweek en 1-30 September bekend staan as boomplantmaand?

Arbor Week Programme Stellenbosch Municipality will be celebrating its annual Arbor Week celebrations with a special programme from 3 - 7 September 2012. This year, focus will be placed on the value that trees add to our daily lives and why it is important conserve them. It is especially relevant this year as the oldest monuments growing in Ryneveldt Street, Stellenbosch, are 200 years old! This year's national theme is: Our Forests, our Future. Celebrate this achievement this year by planting a tree or attending some of the activities in the programme below. In addition, various tree planting activities will be undertaken during September.

For further details contact Portia Bolton at 073 848 4731 or email portiab@stellenbosch.org

Geniet boomplantmaand. Groetnis!

Launch of a Sustainable Development Strategy The BTT has developed a ground-breaking and far reaching Sustainable Development Strategy for the entire Dwars River Valley. This strategy will guide social development and community upliftment over the next 20 years. As part of piloting this strategic framework, the BTT has already implemented some projects around food-security in Lanquedoc and Meerlust. Over the last month the BTT got involved in a soup-kitchen in Lanquedoc and soon a meeting will be held with soup kitchens in the rest of the valley. “The launch of this strategy is long overdue,” according to the Chairperson of the Trust, Mr Desmond Adams. He, like Mr Mike Fraser, Trustee from Pniël, believe this strategy “will provide a clear road-map for the sustainable future this unique valley so richly deserves.” The strategy draws from innovative and cutting edge thinking and practises, from both the developed and the developing world. It is as far as we know the first of its kind in South Africa, not only in terms of its far-reaching proposals and its clear programs, but also in terms of its extensive research. In addition the development of this strategy will take place in a number of phases, all of which are aimed to provide the maximum opportunity for public participation and input.” For that reason the BTT has developed a base-document as draft “Framework for Social Development; Towards a Sustainable Future by 2032.” In addition much research was done in respect of the soil-quality and the wateravailability for our land. This will allow the BTT to implement a small-scale farming project as well as some commercial farming ventures. Soon an announcement in this regard will be made since all the preliminary results have shown very positive signs of economic viability. “The people of the valley have waited long enough for this kind of program. In Lanquedoc there are a lot of challenges around unemployment and poverty. They would be happy to know the BTT is now in a position to take us forward with a clear and integrated strategy,” said trustee Mona Kleinschmidt. The draft framework will be launched on the proposed date of 28 September 2012, at 19:00 at the offices of the BTT. All councillors, sub-trustees, chairpersons and secretaries, as well as principals of schools/ crechés and religious leaders are invited to this occasion. For logistical reasons those interested in attending must please confirm with Mr Charles Quint, at 021-300 1068 or email at info@bttrust.co.za. This strategy is the first concrete step in realizing the objective of a caring, united, prosperous and safe valley, with a sustainable and secure future. It wants to build on the competitive advantages of the area, amongst other its breathtaking

BTT involved in the soup kitchens and other community projects natural beauty, its potential strategic partners in the private sector and its greatest asset; the people of Lanquedoc, Kylemore, Johannesdal, Meerlust and Pniël. It builds upon the injunction on the trust deed of the BTT, which enjoins us to “give to poor, to young and to old, without reservation, favour or prejudice, consistent with the dictates of its Trust Deed, the “birth-certificate” of a united and prosperous Dwars River Valley - a microcosm of South Africa.” In the final analysis this strategy is about our children, about their future and about the kind of community they will both build and inherit. We cannot standby when our kids are dying because of substance-abuse, suicide, poverty, unemployment and hopelessness. The BTT believes in a people’s-centred approach and a fundamental notion

of the organisation is captured in the slogan: “Nothing for us without us!” We believe our people are our greatest asset. As a result the development agenda should be in their hands. We don’t need welfare or handouts, but we need a process and system designed by us and for us, where the ordinary residents become torchbearers of stability, of safety, of hope and of development. The BTT is ready and able to launch a new age of developed and prosperity in partnership with its people and sister-organisations in the valley and beyond. We trust that all our people will take the time to participate in the development of this strategy, as a guiding-framework for development in the valley.

SOME OF THE KEY PROGRAMS ENVISAGED IN THE STRATEGY INCLUDE: t t

t t t t t t t

Property Development & Housing in Partnership with Government Small-scale Farming and Sustainable Agriculture, in partnership with Land Affairs and the Department of Agriculture; Tourism and a Conservation Centre; Leisure and Entertainment Centre; Environmental Education and Conservation; Animal Rescue and Enclosure Centre; Capacity-building and Support for Early Childhood Development Centres; A research facility that will focus on Poverty and Developmental Studies; A job-creation program to provide work for unemployed youth, youth at risk and those in conflict with the law.

It’s Official. The between Kylemore Secondary Schools and best sporting Dwars River Valley.

annual derby and Groendal is the biggest event in the

While we were still basking in the afterglow of Mandela Day and the success of Team South Africa at the London Olympics, along comes the derby at Dwars River Valley Sports Stadium on Saturday 18 August 2012 to establish itself as the most supported event in the Valley. This derby was a defining moment not only for Kylemore High School but for the entire community of the Dwars River Valley. The attendance at this event was the best ever seen at any event in the Valley. The stadium was filled to capacity. Cars were parked in the adjoining PniĂŤl Primary School grounds, with long queues of cars lining the Main road and the road leading into Lanquedoc.

This must surely rank as the most pleasant derby ever between the 2 schools. The atmosphere inside the stadium was one of pure cheer and excitement, and the discipline was above reproach.

But this didn’t happen by chance. The Sunday before the derby the Principals, Teachers and Learners of the two schools attended a special service at PniÍl Congregational Church dedicated to the derby. At this service the purpose and goals of sportsmanship for the derby were emphasized. The gathering was reminded about the true values of sports which mostly get lost in competition. To remember that always giving thanks to God for our gifts and talents and our contribution should be the food with which to feed our souls. This gathering shows what can be achieved when those vital partnerships that make a strong community are forged. The partnership of Community, Church and School has always been the backbone of a successful community. Our youth can only benefit from such a partnership. Youth is a unifying force in community. An alternative future opens when we shift our view of youth from problem to possibility, from deficiency to gift. If we care enough about youth instead of trying to control

them, then we as adults have to deal with our own prejudice. This means we have to change the nature of our conversation. Create places and people that welcome youth, where youth see themselves reflected in those who have chosen to work with them. Our youth is in most instances, a reflection of the world we have helped create. The success of the derby also proves the value of sports for social cohesion, bringing people together in a sense of belonging, pride and respect. “Sport transcends economic, social, political, race, language, and religious barriers, promotes intercultural dialogue, strengthens interaction and enhances cooperation. Sport has the power to unite people in a way little else can. It breaks down racial barriers, it laughs in the face of all kinds of discrimination. Sport speaks to people in a language they can understand. - Nelson Mandela. Kylemore Secondary School has the unique distinction that as the only High School in the Valley it serves the whole community of the Dwars River Valley. It is our collective responsibility as a community to take our support for the school to a more holistic

level, to support the school, and the other schools in our community to become institutions of Character and centres of academic excellence. A sure way of achieving this is for all of us to show the necessary respect and appreciation for our Teachers as they go beyond the call of duty to ensure the development of our children. As a community blessed with abundant gifts we can volunteer our many and varied talents to serve the needs of our youth. Our schools are waiting for our contribution. How can we help? “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another. - Nelson Mandela Join the conversation. Kom praat saam. Masikhulume. On Thursday the 9th of August, South Africa celebrated National Women’s Day. This day commemorates the march on the same day in 1956 when 20,000 women came together in Pretoria to defend the freedom of movement. They marched in protest against legislation that required Africans to carry their "pass during the apartheid era. In large part due to the struggles and perseverance of women mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters - on the 9th of August 2012, South Africans are no longer restricted by the pass or by the apartheid regime. In Kylemore, it was a warm, sunny day made even brighter by well-wishing and entertainment. To celebrate the strength and courage of the women of 1956, Kylemore held a march of a different kind.

At Rivendell we pride our horses not only for their beauty and quality but for their temperament, ridability and spirit. Our wide range of stallions also ensures we have something to suit your needs, whether you are looking for a top eventer, a dressage champion or a steady all rounder.

With the use of not only imported warmblood stallions but also some of South Africa's finest Thoroughbred bloodlines, Rivendell is producing young horses that were born to be athletes and if produced correctly they will without doubt compete on an international level.

The morning started off with the support group women, led by Auntie Siena Charles, knocking on doors across the village and giving words of strength and support to the ladies of the houses. Every girl and lady they found received a ribbon to wear in honour of the women of South Africa and across the globe.

Dancing to the tunes: Laetitia Florence and Katie Daniels

Guests at the Women's Day Celebrations, Community Hall, Kylemore In the afternoon, a high tea was held at the Kylemore Community Hall, where about 25 women had gathered together. David King and David Williams entertained the ladies with music and laughter, and they were applauded with a chorus and dancing in return. The message:

Dwars River Valley women, you are strong, you are beautiful, and you are loved.

Mayor concerned

He appealed to the community to assist the police to bring the perpetrators to book. He went further and said that, “We cannot tolerate the theft which occurred here and I appeal to community members and leaders to join forces with the municipality, neighbourhood watches and the SAPS to take back our communities. The illegal connections not only affect the operation of the school and the future of the learners,

Conrad Sidego, the Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch Municipality, is very concerned and disturbed by the illegal power connections which have left the Kayamandi High School without electricity for more than a week.

Sidego said that the municipality has been in discussions with the school’s principal and key community leaders, encouraging them to take the matter up with the Department of Education. It was, therefore, a pity that the illegal march took place.

Sidego received the students who had marched from their school, at the municipality and explained that the Department of Education needed to address their problem, as the sub-station was located on the school premises, and fall outside the municipality’s jurisdiction.

Illegal power connections which left school in the dark

The school’s electricity supply was interrupted after illegal connections were made to the school’s electricity substation located on the school premises. The students appealed to the municipality to help stop the illegal electricity connections which left them without power and interrupted their educational programmes.

Sterkte! Mayor Conrad Sidego but also the dignity of the community. How can one do this to your neighbours and learners? Education is seriously hampered due to these criminal elements. The Municipality’s Electricity Department explained that while they are responsible for the supply of electricity, they cannot do repairs to electricity sub-stations located on private property and property not under their jurisdiction. Conducting such repairs on the school grounds, therefore, could set a precedent for demands by private citizens that the municipality should attend to electrical problems in their homes. Patrick Oliver, Director of Public Safety, explained that the area around the school forms part of the safety patrol plan of the municipality and that law enforcement officials regularly patrol the area to ensure that illegal connections and the theft of copper cables do not take place. It is, however, clear from these continuing incidents that the municipality cannot do this alone, and appeals to members of the community to contact the SAPS on 021 809 5006 or 10111 to report these crimes.

Creating an outdoor appeal when selling your home It is spring time, a season of new beginnings and very often a time when people decide to take that big step and sell their home. Now that you have decided that this is the right time to sell, you need to prepare your home for a successful sale. Creating a good impression of your home will help attract a willing buyer, and fixing up the important things will increase the chances of a sale at your preferred price. Your first step before spending time and money on fixing up your home is to get a professional such as an Estate Agent to evaluate whether a fix-up is necessary for selling. Walk around your home, “put yourself in the shoes of a potential buyer and make notes on the big things that need fixing and things that don’t work correctly. Your home’s exterior, including the garden, is the first thing a potential buyer will see when they arrive. Start from the pavement and work your way in: t Cut the grass and pull out weeds t Neaten up dead trees and plants or plant new flowers to add some colour t Wash out oil marks from driveways t De-clutter outdoor areas t Clean the pool t Unblock gutters t Clean the windows t Repaint the exterior walls, driveway gates and boundary walls These little cosmetic changes often don’t cost a lot but has a huge impact on a potential buyer.

KYLEMORE VS GROENDAL

Moet PniĂŤl en Kylemore Rugby saamsmelt?

Memorable Moments - 18 August 2012

Touch Judge Banbridge DAVID CHAMBERS This was a very good performance between two strong teams. Your guys played competitive rugby.

Skeidsregter WP Rugby

WAYNE MANSFIELD Vanaand was ‘n groot sukses.

Ondersteunersklub Kylemore RFC RAY OLIVIER Dit sal ‘n goeie ding wees.

Bestuurslid PniĂŤl Villagers CHARLES STUBBS Dit sal werk.

Past President Banbridge AUSTIN HEWITSON OBE There must be a sincere agreement between all involved in the organizations. A situation must be created where both communities must benefit. Neither club have to lose their identity. There must just be an agreement. Think of Nelson Mandela and what he had to put behind him and where he took South Africa. Don’t do it when he passes on, do it now. It won’t be an easy road. However, easy decisions that are not worth taking. It is the hard ones that are worthwhile. Maybe you can start by establishing a combined junior club.

PIERRE ROGERS Vanaad was ‘n goeie voorbeeld waarom ek ‘n skeidsregter is.

September is not only the start of Spring, it is also the start of National Back Week, an annual event hosted by the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP) to promote back-health and educate people on how to stay injury free, with practical tips that can be followed at home, at school or work.

This year National Back Week runs for two weeks, from 3 to 16 September. The SUSPI Physiotherapy unit supports National Back Week and is offering free back assessments to individuals who might either be suffering from back pain or who want advice and guidance on how to prevent injuring their backs in the future.

Mark is SA Kampioen

Simondium Netbalbane geverf

Hy gaan Suid Afrika vanaf 8-9 September by die Afrika Kampioenskap in Cassablanca, Marokko, verteenwoordig.
