Sien julle daar! Sien bladsy 6 & 7 vir meer informasie.

SIMOND BERG? ONE MOUNTAIN, ANOTHER VIEW...

It’s festival season in the Dwars River Valley this month! The perfect way to say goodbye to summer. Yes, they are held to raise funds, but it is a great way of hooking up with the rest of the community.

In our previous edition we illustrated the different views of Simonsberg and mentioned that this iconic mountain was named after Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the Cape of Good Hope.

To motivate her claim, Florence mailed us an article by Prof Christo Viljoen, retired Dean of Engineering at Stellenbosch University and amateur genealogist, in which the Prof explained that the name of the mountain was indicated as Simond Berg in historical documents. His article, which appeared in Die Burger on 12 October 2002, made reference to a 1776 painting by Johannes Schumacher with an inscription: “Simond Berg biy Stellenbosch in welke de Silwermijn was”. Exactly when the mountain became Simonsberg, is unknown. What do you think? Send your opinion to wendell@riviernuus.co.za

Florence Phillips from Pniël contacted us and shared some interesting information. According to Florence, the mountain was named after Pierre Simond (1651 - 1713), the first pastor of the Huguenots. Our neigbouring town, Simondium, was also named after this cleric.

I married someone who stays in Kylemore, but whose roots are still firmly in Pniël, the ‘other side’ of the Dwars River. Marrying into the family meant that I should participate in family activities, which included the Pniël Church Bazaar, an event I knew of, but never attended. Still fresh from honeymoon, I was asked by my father-in-law to help at the fruit and vegetable stand. I reluctantly agreed but on the day I felt like Sting (a legal alien in Pniël). To make a long story short, this year will be my fifth year behind the same stand, selling fruit juices! Looking back, those initial ‘alien perceptions’ quickly disappeared as I was treated as part of the community. The same can be said for my wife, Shanaé, who has also been accepted as part of the Kylemore community. One doesn't have to go to extremes such as marrying across ‘river’ lines to integrate! You can just hop into a car or taxi and cross the Dwars River. The festive month of March gives us the perfect opportunity to integrate with different communities. The Pampoenfees is on the 10’th, Kylemore’s Bazaar is on the 17’th and Pniël’s on the 31’st. Let us support each other as residents of the Dwars River Valley. Apart from the integration, your money will go towards very good causes. The goods on offer are also remarkably cheap, so please go out and support the different initiatives. Speaking of support and low prices:

Sharing experiences

From 5IBJMBOE to the Wineland For the past year, the Dwars River Valley had an unique visitor to our shores. His name is Akarawin Mayuramas, a student from Bangkok in Thailand. Akarawin was part of the student exchange pragramme YES (Youth Exchange and Study) and attended Kylemore High School. During his stay, he shared the home of Mr and Ms Ruben and Sandra November in Pniël. Akarawin is nicknamed Chef, and says every child in Thailand is nicknamed by their parents, as most names are too long. Chef’s father passed away five years ago and his mother, older brother and sister have raised him since. “In South Africa I was very lucky to be part of a big family that took great care of me. They also took me to many different sites in the Western Cape,

including Cape Point, Table Mountain, Oudtshoorn and Knysna,” said Chef. “The people in Pniël are also like a big family where everyone greets each other, even when they see one another at the mall! This is very different to Thailand where the most you will get is an occasional smile. “Most of the people in Thailand think of South Africa as a country where lions, elephants and other wild life roam around freely. My fellow Thai citizens also warned me to be careful of terrorists. However, I did a bit of research before coming here, but was still pleasantly surprised by the South African lifestyle. I encountered no lions, elephants or terrorists,” he jokingly said. Chef’s main reason for visiting the Cape Winelands was to learn more of the South African culture and at the same time introduce his.

CHEF'S PNIËL FAMILY: (Back left) Brothers - Stéphan, Josh and Robyn, Father - Ruben, Chef and Mother - Sandra

ADMINISTRATIVE HELPER: Chef and Mr Adam de Vries Like 95% of Thailand’s population, Chef is also a Buddhist, which made his stay in Christian-dominated Pniël even more interesting. Despite his religious beliefs, he was given the opportunity to address the Pniël Congregational Church during the morning service on Sunday 26 February where he thanked the community for welcoming him into their homes with open arms. Chef also made a passionate plea to all children to appreciate their parents while they are still alive and be grateful for the privileges they have.

“The people in Pniël are also like a big family where everyone greets each other, even when they see one another at the mall! " According to Ms Sandra November, who is also mother of three sons, housing Chef was an honour and quite a revelation for her family. “It was a great pleasure to have Chef in our house and his humbleness was unbelievable. He even insisted on ironing his own shirts (much better than a lot of us are able to do) and watering the garden,” she said. “He is a very shy person and quickly had to get used to our frequent big family gatherings. One of the most interesting experiences was over Christmas where he was overwhelmed with all the gifts from the family. He was also treated like a brother by my sons and we are going to miss him tremendously.”

Despite already completing Grade 12 in his home country, Chef attended classes with Kylemore High Grade 12’s of 2011. Initially he found this to be very difficult as most classes were in Afrikaans. However, Chef is a fast learner and today he follows most conversations and even converse in Afrikaans. His favourite word is ‘gemaklik’ and during this interview, he unknowingly referred to the school’s secretary as the ‘sekkie’! According to school principal, Mr Adam De Vries, Chef was later used to assist with the administration where his computer skills came in very handy. “School life in South Africa is a bit different than in Thailand,” says Chef. “Our classes are a lot bigger with more than 50 students in a class. We do not have prefects, as we do not need someone else to take care of us,” Chef sincerely said. “Thailand has a population of over 60 million people and our schools are therefore more spacious with much bigger buildings than in South Africa.” Chef returned to Bangkok on Tuesday, 28 February, to start his studies in Linguistics. This aspiring teacher left with a completely new culture and a few Afrikaans words under his belt. At the same time the Novembers and their extended family, Chef’s school friends as well as the community of the Dwars River Valley are left with exposure to a new culture and the memories of an extremely humble human being that reminded us to be appreciative of one another.

FRANSCHHOEK VALLEY Transformation Charter launched King, who is Principal of Bridge House Preparatory School, initially planted the seed of the Charter as a way to address some of the issues faced by this community, “I am inspired by this incredible initiative and am deeply invested in this community and its people.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was first to sign the Franschhoek Valley Transformation Charter when it was launched at the historic Dutch Reformed Church in Franschhoek on Thursday 16 February 2012, with an estimated 600 people in attendance.

Development worker Quza says that when the founders first met about three years ago “We were inspired to work together and pursue these ideals.

The Charter has been written by a group of locals from all walks of life who want to proactively facilitate transformation in the Franschhoek Valley, in line with the ideals expressed in the country’s constitution. The Archbishop, who has agreed to be Patron of the Charter, told the assembled residents of Franschhoek, “I am totally blown away! He said he believed that God was smiling on the assembly, “You have started an incredible thing, you are part of God’s Revolution. He said that the people of Franschhoek were going to “show South Africa how it is done, “Here we often live in a prison, a prison of fear ... but you have started dreaming of a different kind of community. I want on behalf of God to thank you. Tutu said that it was significant that the founders had called it a Charter, “I remember another Charter that had a profound influence on our country, the Freedom Charter. Let the Franschhoek Charter be as influential and powerful. Praise poet, Zandisile Samakade, a learner at Groendal High School, gave a passionate reading of a poem he had written for the occasion which had people cheering and ululating with excitement. Everyone joined in a rousing and emotional rendition of the National Anthem, accompanied by the voices of the Uniting Reformed Church Male Choir, the Sinothando Arts and Culture Choir and Groendal Primary School Choir; several people were moved to tears.

“I remember another Charter that had a profound influence on our country, the Freedom Charter. Let the Franschhoek Charter be as influential and powerful. - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu -

Sintu Quza, Melvin King and Reverend Bossie Minnaar, all founder members of the Charter, read it aloud in the three main local languages – Afrikaans, English and Xhosa. The Charter was developed from the realisation that, although the Franschhoek Valley has undergone major development in the past few decades to become one of South Africa’s top tourist destinations renowned for its outstanding wines, haute cuisine and natural beauty, it (like most South African communities) remains divided on many levels. Founder member

DRYDEN %0034t("5&4t"650."5*0/

Dr Ernest Messina, Chair of the Transformation Charter group, oversaw the evening’s proceedings. “Our community is relatively small but still largely divided like many other communities in South Africa. I believe that we have a moral obligation to do whatever we can to leave a legacy that is significantly better than the one we inherited. In that way we will endeavour to ensure that the human potential of the Valley’s inhabitants is realised, he says.

READING THE CHARTER OUT LOUD: (from left) Sintu Quza, Melvin King, Reverend Bossie Minnaar Do you think the Dwars River Valley also needs a charter? Let us know what you think on 021 885 2392 or email: wendell@riviernuus.co.za

The Charter was carefully worded and its final paragraph sums up the basic ethos of this commitment: “We believe that our destiny is in our own hands. In everything we do, therefore, we shall demonstrate our awareness and belief that we are a diverse but interdependent community, which shares a common environment and future destiny. We want to be members of an active civil society, made up of individuals aware of their needs, rights and responsibilities. We want to live in a healthy, productive, and caring community where the dignity and humanity of ALL is upheld and celebrated. We want to be free and safe and happy. We want to proclaim our membership of Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s “Rainbow People of God. This is not an unattainable ideal and it should not take decades to achieve. We will have reached our destination when we care for each other and our Valley in an everyday, realistic and sustainable fashion, not because anyone has told us to, but because we ourselves believe that it is in our own self-interest to do so. Let’s take hands and share the responsibility of getting there. For more details email transformation.charter@gmail.com

PC Petersen Eeufeesviering SKOP AF

ANC $FMFCSBUFT

ZFBSTXJUIPC Petersen A delegation of the African National Congress (ANC) visited the PC Petersen Primary School in Kylemore on Saturday 11 February 2011.

The visit formed part of South Africa’s ruling party’s 100 year celebration (an achievement shared by our local primary school) that started with a ceremony at Stellenbosch Town Hall and ended at the Freedom Run outside the old Victor Verster Prison, now Drakenstein Correctional Centre. The centenary torch was presented to the school’s principal, Mr Pieter van der Westhuizen. For this special occasion, a huge cake in green, black and yellow colours that depcited the ANC and PC’s milestone, was cut by Mr van der Westhuizen, Mr JD Brandt (previous principal) and other political party leaders. Magic Muffins Improves the learning ability of children What started off as an art class for disadvantaged children, has grown into a project that supplies muffins to more than 500 underprivileged children in Kylemore and surrounds. An initiative of Imbali Western Cape together with community members, these muffins are prepared and baked on the premises of Kylemorre High School. It costs R1.89 to produce one muffin which they then sell for R2.00 each. According to Ms Jeanne Bestbier-Bloch from Imbali, the driving force behind the Muffins Project, results have indicated that the muffins' nutritional value enhance childrens' learning ability. Imbali would like to appeal to anybody to get involved with the Feed A Child A Muffin A Day Campaign. This will only cost you R50 a month. Please contact Jeanne at 083 601 2376 for further information or visit www.imbaliwc.co.za.

Kylemore Groep 124

"History of the people, by the people.

UINSAKE

Besturende Direkteur, De Fynne Kwekery

Welkom terug by ons tweede tuinrubriek. Verbeel ek my, of is daar soggens en saans so effens ‘n nip in die lug? Ongelukkig, of gelukkig, was hierdie Februarie darem nie so erg soos in 2011 nie.

TRIP TO KENYA %"7 * % C O R O L I S S E N

The Stellenbosch Municipality recently undertook a trip to Kenya in order to share lessons on the upgrading of informal settlements, poverty alleviation and the provision of water and sanitation. The delegation had a strong Dwars River Valley represenation with: David Carolissen (Delegation leader), Valerie Fernandez (Councillor responsible for Housing), Hendri Steenberg (Field worker Stellenbosch Municipality), Chrissie Kana (Lanquedoc), Trevor Masyi (Langrug), Nyameka Magele (Langrug). The team met with delegates from Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Kenya. The workshop was facilitated by Arief Hasan, a well-known architect and academic in Asia and an expert in development processes. Most of the delegates were from slums in the respective countries, as well as senior government officials, NGO's and academics from Universities in Dar es Salaam, Niarobi, Accra and Kampala. We conducted a number of presentations on our work in urban slums, which is regarded as truly ground-breaking by the rest of the world. This trip was the 4th we have done, to Africa and Asia.

We met with poor people in their own communities, and with high-ranking government officials in Nairobi and beyond. One of the positive spin-offs was the fact that the delegation from Langrug came to implement a savings club in their own community, inspired by what the urban poor do in sister-countries in Africa. Also, just last week a group of 26 Master students, from UCT came to work with us in slums, for at least a full semester. This initiative mirrors what is done in other countries, particularly in Kenya, under the auspices of the African Association of Planning Schools. This is a cooperation initiative by over 40 planning schools in Africa, in an attempt to create the momentum for greater change on the continent, through the revitalization of planning education and practice. We will continue to cooperate with these friends from Africa, and in our network on other continents such as Asia and Latin-America. Of course delegates from the above mentioned countries and other parts of the world have, and will continue to visit us on similar exchanges, through which we will develop a critical mass and innovative solutions, as a key vehicle for the eradication of hunger, deprivation and homelessness in the world.

Unbeaten for two years %"7 * % VA N W Y K

The under 17 cricket team of Kylemore High School has been unbeaten for the last two years. Cricket teams today go through many different avenues while striving for excellence and often forget the recipe for a successful cricket team. The ingredient that comes to mind is good old DAD.

Dedication, Application and Determination. This is what Alec Lyons has taught these young cricketers. Alec, the mastermind behind this success, reluctantly allowed me to be part of the team and bringing my little bit of cricket knowledge to the party. The players’ knowledge of the game coupled with the ability to communicate effectively is the key for the team’s unbeaten streak. Their passion, enthusiasm and excitement both on and off the field show that cricket is not just a game, but also a form of life.

Zamile Adams and Keaton Swartz both Grade 8 forced their way into the side and I do believe that they will play big cricket for the Dwars River Valley in the future. Keaton may be the next Henry Davids; Zamile (Mielie) is extremely quick behind the stumps; Leroy Lawrence, Kyle Davids, Derron Jason, Whilton Jackson, Kian Skippers, Reed Larry, Alfredo Julies, Cameron April, Herschelle Swartz, Romarck De Wet, Ruduwaan Johnson are the gentlemen still part of the team since their unbeaten run started. Charl Cyster (Mr. Cricket) is the inspirational captain behind this team. The word 'carnage' describes best what happened against Weltevrede recently where he scored a mammoth 120 runs off only 42 balls (not out). Alfredo Julies, Kyle Davids, Charl Cyster, Anderson Meyer have all been selected to represent Boland Central.

THE UNBEATABLES: (Back, from left) Mr David van Wyk (Teacher and Coach), Ruduwaan Johson (Vice Captain), Derron Jason, Kian Skippers, Alfredo Julies, Leroy Lawrence, Reed Larry, Charl Cyster (Captain) (Front) Romarck de Wet, Kyle Davids, Keaton Swarts, Herschelle Swartz, Whilton Jackson and Zamile Adams

Albei klubs sal dus in 2012 nog steeds in hul onderskeie ligas speel.
