How to prepare yourself and your Riviera for offshore cruising Colin Crisp believes that every Riviera owner has the ability to cruise extensively along coastlines or head out to sea to explore further afield.

12

Offshore cruising offers many rewards and rich memories for those committed to acquiring the necessary skills. Throughout this highly informative presentation, Colin Crisp shares his experience and knowledge to empower all Riviera owners. Offshore cruising skills, he says, can be acquired over time by any Riviera owner through lessons learned from fellow owners as well as experience in handling a motor yacht in varying conditions. The key, he says, is detailed preparation, both of the motor yacht and of skipper and crew. Preparing the motor yacht is vital, including full engine and systems checks and an inventory of spare parts for critical components. Expect the unexpected, he says.

A competent crew is also important. Do you have people on board with basic skills in mechanics, electrical systems, navigation and first aid? Do you have a designated cook? While it may seem obvious, meal planning and preparation is important, too. Healthy foods that can be prepared even in challenging seas need to be stowed and readily accessed. During an offshore passage, quality sleep must be matched with the need for constant watch. Is any crew member prone to sea sickness? In heavy weather, almost anyone can be struck by sea-sickness and it is debilitating.

While these and many other considerations are important, Colin’s presentation will focus most strongly on safety of crew and the motor yacht; being prepared for any eventuality Colin has owned four Rivieras and has cruised extensively throughout the South Pacific Ocean from his home in Auckland, New Zealand, most recently aboard his Riviera 61 Enclosed Flybridge, Aquasition 2. He will also welcome questions from the audience, so come prepared to participate in this thoroughly informative workshop.

LIVING THE RIVIERA DREAM

EXPERIENCE AND LEARN FROM THE WONDERS OF A CRUISE AROUND THE RUGGED COAST OF TASMANIA Jason Squire is an experienced and adventurous boater. In this entertaining and information-packed presentation about a circumnavigation of Tasmania, he shares his knowledge in preparing for the joys to be found in extended cruising. In the three years he has owned his Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht The Silver Fox, Jason Squire has voyaged more than 15,000 nautical miles and clocked about 1,200 engine hours.

During this voyage, Jason’s partner Caitlin Harvey documented much of the circumnavigation through vivid photographs of the many wonders of the Tasmanian coast.

As well as being an experienced boater, Jason is skilled with computer technology as he is an online entrepreneur based in Adelaide, South Australia.

One of the many highlights for Jason and Caitlin was cruising through the expanse of Macquarie Harbour on Tasmania’s west coast. It is six times larger than Sydney Harbour.

As well as being a technology enthusiast, Jason is also a keen and experienced diver and photographer.

“We were particularly excited to explore the famed Gordon River,” said Jason. “We cruised about 20 nautical miles along this amazing river right to the junction with the Franklin River.”

His first voyage aboard The Silver Fox was a 2,000 nautical mile shakedown cruise to explore Queensland’s northern Great Barrier Reef and Osprey Reef in the Coral Sea, about 70 nautical miles north-east of Cooktown close to the northern tip of Australia.

Better was to come. About 80 nautical miles further south, now well into the Roaring Forties latitudes, is

In 2017 Jason and The Silver Fox undertook a cruise to circumnavigate the island State of Tasmania at the southern end of Australia.

Port Davey and, through narrow waterways, you enter the magnificent Bathurst Harbour. “We came out of the waterways and it opened out – it’s like a lake in Switzerland, like we had ventured among sunken mountains,” said Jason. FEEL THE SEAKEEPER GYRO AT WORK - RUNAWAY BAY MARINA

The innovative Express Joystick System developed by Twin Disc revolutionises the docking and slow-speed manoeuvring of shaftdrive motor yachts. With fingertip control, skippers can smoothly and simultaneously actuate and control engines, transmissions, propellers and thrusters. In this hands-on workshop, you will feel and see first-hand the EJS system in operation, providing effortless control in any direction, even pivoting on its own axis. The EJS is favoured by owners of our largest Rivieras and is a standard feature of our new Riviera Sports Motor Yacht collection.

This on-water workshop at Runaway Bay Marina, just a 15 minute drive from Riviera’s yard in Coomera, will demonstrate, in real offshore conditions the innovative computer-controlled Seakeeper gyroscopic stabiliser technology that is providing yacht owners with “the power to tame the sea”. Gyro stabilisers greatly reduce boat roll and make time on the water much safer and vastly more enjoyable. Feel how they work and experience first-hand why they work so well. Such has been the impact of the Seakeeper gyro that a great many new Riviera motor yacht owners now insist they be factory-fitted. A Seakeeper can also be installed on board your current yacht by our expert Aftermarket team. Don’t miss this chance to see just how much difference a Seakeeper can make. Complimentary bus transfer from Coomera to Runaway Bay will be provided by Riviera.

SAFE ANCHORING, TOWING AND RAFTING

KNOTS, LINES AND HITCHES

The most common questions our team of experts are asked refer to safe anchoring. This seminar offers you practical techniques to ensure the efficient setting and recovery of your anchor. Our experts describe which types of anchors work best in specific situations as well as explaining options and scenarios to anchor to the seabed, sand, mud or coral, and ensuring your motor yacht remains secure against wind, tide and current. They will also detail the safe and correct anchor windlass, bow roller and electronic chain counter operation. You will also learn how to position fenders and lines to assist in manoeuvring a second vessel. Learn the professional tips and tricks to raft up with an anchored vessel, discuss the key considerations to ensure a safe towing scenario using knots, lines and hitches as well as coiling and throwing lines. You will also receive an overview of the best tow points for motor yachts and learn the difference between snubber, bridle and spring lines and the best use of lines for a long tow or side tow. This is a seminar for every motor yacht owner and their crew to develop greater confidence and enjoy safer boating.

Have you ever stood in awe as another skipper seems to secure a motor yacht without effort or haste? This workshop is for you! It is better to know a knot and not need it than to need a knot and not know it – so goes the old adage which inspired this workshop. In this course you will learn all about ropes, knots, fenders and line-work. We will show you how to use spring lines to help manoeuvre your vessel to and from the dock with varying wind and tidal influences. Our aim is to help you enjoy the process of preparing and securing lines for berthing, rafting and mooring and to show you the professional “look” when you are securing your luxury motor yacht in her berth.
