Four Women Playwrights Take Center Stage for Women’s History Month in March Jersey City Theater Center Presents Original Women’s Plays about the Human Condition

By Sally Deering The Jersey City Theater Center (JCTC) puts Women’s History Month center stage this March by spotlighting the work of four women playwrights. The playwrights will present readings of their original plays that focus on religion, sex and the atomic bomb.

The JCTC presents the play reading series in partnership with the Writers Theatre of New Jersey’s New Play Development program for New Jersey women playwrights under the Artistic Direction of John Pietrowski.

“These are not bedroom dramas,” Pietrowski says. “These are very interesting takes on different subjects. Susan Barsky’s play, for instance, is Susan’s take on the four Gospels and they’re funny. I like to equate them to medieval mystery plays that would take liberties with the text with a sense of reverence.”

Pietrowski’s new play development program works with a group of playwrights who go through a 12-18-month development process to hone their plays.

“Its fairly new work they bring to us, and we give them a four-reading process: three private readings and a public reading,” Pietrowski says. “About three years ago, I directed some

installation on view at the Visual Arts Gallery on Culver Avenue adjacent to the NJCU campus. FESTIVAL OF COLORS Seven Artists Celebrate Holi at Barrow Mansion, JC On the bill: Art, Music, Dance and A Whisper of Spring

By Sally Deering Indian and South Asian cultures celebrate the coming of spring on Sat & Sun, Mar. 3 and 4 with the Art of The Holi festival of colors at Barrow Mansion in Downtown Jersey City.

This weekend event features a group art show featuring seven local artists exhibiting colorful artworks, light refreshments and live entertainment. The Holi promotes the coming of spring and the burst of color that spring brings.

Celebrations are held in India, South Asia and throughout the world.

On Sat, Mar. 3, from 12 noon to 10 pm the group art show will be underway along with a 7 pm performance by renowned Tabla player Anirban Roy Chowdhury and friends.

On Sun, Mar. 4, the festival continues with the art show and refreshments, and a 5 pm music and dance performance by Shehnaaz Dance Academy.

Participating artists are all local and include Shilpa Gowda, Nainee Shah, Bithika Adhikary, Maria Lupianez, Robin Prezioso, Cecilia Martinez, and Mahalaxmi Karn.

Maria Ross of Mariarts and Alpana Mittal cocurated the event which is sponsored by Barrow Mansion. There will also be a complimentary wine tasting.

Hudson County Community College (HCCC) Department of Cultural Affairs is presenting a collection of indie films in collaboration with filmmaker Delaney Buffett. The festival will run from March 2 through April 28, with screenings in the Dineen Hull Gallery Atrium, which is located on the top floor at 71 Sip Avenue in Jersey City – just across the street from the Journal Square PATH Transit Center.

All of the short films will be shown on each of the screening days: Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, March 14 at 12 p.m.; Thursday, March 15 at 12 p.m.; Thursday, April 12 at 2 p.m.; Tuesday, April 17 at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, April 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Screenings are open to the general public, and there is no charge for admission.

The films include: First Match, directed by Olivia Newman, revolves around a determined 14-year-old wrestler who prepares for her first co-ed match where there’s much more at stake than winning.

Newman is a writer/director, alum of the Sundance Directors and Screenwriters Labs, and recipient of the 2015 IFP/Durga Foundation Filmmaker Award, the Adrienne Shelly Foundation filmmaker grant and the Maryland Filmmakers fellowship. First Match was financed

by Netflix and will be released in 2018.

Xiuhtezcatl Martinez, a teen climate activist, who has already taken on major oil companies and inspired young people in 25 countries to take action in the fight against climate change.

Vanessa Black is a documentary filmmaker from California whose company, BLKFLM, works to create impact driven stories, and has been honored to work with Al Gore, the United Nations, UNICEF, and Appian Way. New Deep South: KAYLA, Directed by Rosie Haber, KAYLA is a series which explores the multifaceted queer culture emerging in the American South, and explores the evolution of identity as young Austin considers what transitioning to a woman would mean in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Haber won the Audience Award at LA Film Festival and New Orleans Film Festival, a Web Award and was nominated for a 2017 GLAAD Media Award for her digital series, New Deep South.

Run Mama Run, is a story about an elite track athlete, Sarah Brown, who will continue to train through pregnancy and postpartum with help of her trainer and husband, Darren Brown. Directed by Daniele Anastasion, a documentary and commercial director, Run Mama Run was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary.

IDENTITY & ART Artist Shoshanna Weinberger Explores Female Archetypes in Solo Show The Otherness of Strangefruit at NJCU’s Lemmerman Gallery, Now thru Mar. 15th

Exhibiting in the Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery on the 3rd Floor of New Jersey City University’s Hepburn Hall, artist Shoshanna Weinberger of Kingston, Jamaica, sets out to explore her CaribbeanAmerican heritage through her art. The walls of the rectangular gallery space are lined with framed collages of Weinberger’s take on women’s bodies as cultural stereotypes with repeated images of the black silhouetted legs of a women with large

circles of braids instead of arms, torsos and heads.

The show, which opened Feb. 1st will be on view through Mar. 15th. According to the gallery’s NJCU homepage: “Weinberger mines the complexity of her Caribbean-American heritage to investigate the female archetype.

Her Strangefruit series is a collection of collages that reference the ambiguity of her mixedrace identity and pointedly distill cultural stereotypes around beauty,

race, and gender.”

Weinberger has exhibited her work in the U.S. and internationally. Her art has been featured in the Jamaican and Martinique Biennials, and she was recently awarded a fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and named 2017 Artist-in-Residence at the Gateway Project in Newark.
