Keenan creates womancentric mandalas with her use of small pieces of images of women’s bodies taken from photographs and magazines. The seven collages on view in MEETING, are made up of pieces no bigger than the cutout from a hole-puncher. Only the pieces Keenan used were cut from Playboy magazines’ images of women’s lips, eyes and other, more intimate body parts.

“I had a friend at Playboy who gave me a lot of back issues,” Keenan says, as she gets ready to hang the MEETING show at Issyra.

When Sow first opened Issyra Gallery, he wasn’t quite sure how to be a gallery owner, he says. He decided to use his experience collecting African art.

“I didn’t know how to run a gallery, so I thought let me try African Art,” Sow says. “I collected before I opened, and now I am a dealer. Africa has a lot of traditional art.”

24th Hoboken Art & Music Fest Kicks Off Sun, June 11 Bands and Partiers to Rock Like Its 1999

A

s summer heats up, Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber plans to get Hoboken dancing in the streets when they take to the stage for their Prince Tribute. Songs like “Take Me With You” and “The Beautiful Ones” will be part of the swizzle that stirs up the 24th annual Hoboken Art & Music Festival on Sunday, June 11, hosted

by Mayor Dawn Zimmer, The Hoboken Chamber and Cultural Affairs Director Geri Fallo who has been commandeering the art & music fest ever since it was a grassroots block party 24 years ago.

Fallo and her team at Hoboken’s Cultural Affairs Department pull out all the stops for this year’s shindig. Bigger and better than ever (yes, they all say that), this year’s line-up has some of the hardest working groups in show biz; bands that are touring the country and bringing their shows to Hoboken to help the Mile Square City get its groove on.

The 24th annual Art & Music Festival has a big change this year – the event takes place on the north end of Hoboken. The fun begins at 14th Street and works its way down to 8th Street along Washington Street. Two main stages

end the festival on 14th & 8th Streets and, in between, art, crafts and food vendors will offer summery treats, paintings, clothes and doodads to make your summer a Beach Blanket Bingo of fun. Whether it’s a fabulous dessert, a delicious drink, a cool photograph, a sexy hat or something totally unusual, anything goes at the Hoboken Art & Music Festival, and that means on stage, too.

Bands in the line-up are Frankie Morales & the Mambo of the Time Orquesta, Christina Alessi & the Toll Collectors, Mike Daly & the Planets, Demolition String Band, In the Works, Sylvana Joyce & the Moment, Karyn Kuhl Band, Glenn Morrow’s Cry for Help, Overlake, RockNRoll Hi-Fives, The Squid & The Rose and Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber.

“We’re going on at 4:30 on the main stage at 8th Street,” Jared Michael Nickerson, who plays electric bass for Burnt Sugar, says. “Geri asked us to do a Prince tribute since its Prince’s birthday June 9.

We’re going to play songs like Take Me With Me You, the Beautiful Ones, and I Would Die for You. Its going to be pretty awesome.

The band we’re bringing to Hoboken is 12 pieces.”

Burnt Sugar has been together 18 years and their 18th release:

Boo Reiners, will perform at 2:30 pm on the 8th Street stage. The team has released six albums and toured the US and Europe.

Their song “Go Coney Island, Roll On The Sand” appears on the Grammy nominated album “My Name Is New York.”

“Geri loves music, she’s always around live music,” Nickerson says. “Compound the fact that she runs the festival and gets the opportunity to program the stages, she’s in heaven about it. She also treats musicians really well.”

Nickerson calls the art & music festival a great way to spend the day.

“What’s not to love?”

Nickerson says. “This is such a beautiful town and to be able to shut down the main street... When you have an outdoor free festival, you get crowds from both sides of the river that converge on Hoboken.”

Jon D’Amore Delivers His Next Book, Deadfellas

by Diane Lombardi-Fleming Hudson County native and the author of his bestselling memoir, The Boss Always Sits In The Back, Jon D’Amore has published his long awaited sequel.

Except that it’s not really a sequel. Deadfellas incorporates the best (and the worst) of the North Jersey mob with a supernatural theme, which makes for a satirical tale where everyone involved gets their just reward. Where “The Boss” was based on D’Amore’s true life events, Deadfellas stays with the Jersey mob theme, but the story is fiction. “No one would have guessed that mixing the underworld with the real underworld would result in such an entertaining combination,” D’Amore says, after receiving reviews from literary insiders and other authors fortunate enough to get advance copies.

The author expertly used his ability for storytelling, humor, creativity and deep character development to tell a tale that has the reader rooting for the bad guys.

D’Amore has taken these unlikely elements and once again created a “hard to

put down” book. The main characters are complex, honorable, sinister, loyal, and in spite of their occupation, likeable. Yet, by the final chapters, one finds they’re hoping everyone gets out alive.

The fact that D’Amore knows and understands the mob is evident from the first pages of Deadfellas. That he has a sense of humor is also evident. That he is a master at weaving very different elements into a cohesive and fun book is a joy for the reader, and speaks highly of the author’s creativity and imagination.

Historically, it’s the book that gets released and is eventually, and hopefully, turned into a screenplay.

But when Jon D’Amore is involved, things never happen in the traditional manner.

Several years ago while living and working in Hollywood as a script doctor, D’Amore partnered with screenwriter Steve Barr to create an idea for a feature film to fit the zombie-genre.

Jon and Steve now laugh as they remember producers telling them they had

missed the boat, and that the “zombie wave is over.”

As detailed by Barr in Deadfellas’ Foreword, this was soon followed by the release of films like Zombieland, and a stream of TV shows such as The Walking Dead, iZombie and many others, “Once again,” states D’Amore, “Those who claim to know what they’re talking about, often don’t.”

D’Amore will be touring the country, beginning in Los Angeles in early September and will arrive for several appearances in New Jersey and New York City during late-September into early-October.
