Some of country and western’s biggest stars will take to the stage in Letterkenny in aid of those Donegal families affected by the recent flash floods.

Among the stars set to perform at this weekend’s ‘Flood Aid’ include: Daniel O’Donnell, Nathan Carter and Declan Nearney.

Local hotelier and TV3 personality Noel Cunningham and Phil Mack of the ‘Keep it Country Music Channel’ will be the special guest hosts of this unqiue event.

Larges areas of Inishowen were left devastated after a severe deluge of rain fell over the northwest last week.

Several families have been left homeless as a result of the floods, which also seen businesses ruined.

Donegal native and country superstar, Daniel O’Donnell took to Facebook to explain how the concert was organised at short notice to help the people of Donegal, whose lives have been devastated by the torrential rain of last week which has displaced many locals from their homes and livelihood.

He said all of the proceeds from the concert will be given to the “people who suffered because of the floods”.

Daniel added: “I’m sure like myself you are all shocked and horrified but thank God nobody lost their lives.

Road safety message issued ahead of new school term The Donegal Road Safety Working Group has issued a road safety message ahead of the beginning of the new school term.

As schools around Letterkenny and the county return from the summer holiday's, Donegal Co. Council's Road Safety Officer, Brian O'Donnell has reminded motorists, cyclists and children to take extra care on the roads.

Mr O'Donell said: "As schools reopen across the County, it is important to remember that traffic will increase, buses will be picking up and leaving off children, children will be walking and cycling to and from school, and parents will be driving their children to school before heading to work.

"There will also be large numbers of little children attending school for the first time so let's ensure this is a positive experience for them by slowing down and taking extra care whenever you are travelling near or past a school.

"It is never more important for driv-

ers to slow down and pay attention than when children are on our roads."

School traffic wardens, who are employed by local authorities, are tasked with ensuring that schoolchildren are safely able to cross public roads when coming to and from school.

Mr O’Donnell, added that school wardens have a vital role to play despite many drivers ignoring a warden’s Stop sign despite a legal obligation to stop their vehicle.

He said: "We are very thankful to the majority of drivers who do stop when requested, but there are still large numbers of drivers who seem to think they have a right to speed up when approaching a crossing.

"Nothing excuses or justifies putting the lives of children in danger or the safety of other road users, especially if they are negotiating their journey at a pace that suits, and is safe for them.

"We cannot tolerate any incidents of aggression and intimidation on the roads, especially towards school war-

dens, when the warden is simply trying to do their job.”

Dangerous parking around schools is also contributing to the problem so we are appealing to motorists to help schools by driving with proper care and attention and parking well away from no parking areas around schools. Motorists should first and foremost take responsibility for their own actions.

Parents and teachers can also help prepare children for the journey to and from school by discussing the importance of being safe on the roads.

Parents and guardians are being asked to make a real effort to demonstrate good road safety behaviour at all times as your child learns from your example.

So if your child walks or cycles to school, you are advised to take them on the route in advance and make sure they know where they are going.

If they travel by car or bus, make sure they know how important it is to keep

The workshops include an "Introduction to Animation" for children young adults.

Michael added: "We will also have a maasterlcass/workshop on how to shoot you own video on a mobile phone and that’s for individuals to businesses who maybe want to shoot a promo video, and they will be taken right through to shooting it, to screening it including the editing process, adding sound, all that sort of stuff."

A huge is expecetd to attend, so organisers have urged people to get their tickets early.

Heroic crew members from the Lough Swilly Ferry, which operates between Buncrana and Rathmullan, this week rescued a couple of County Antrim holidaymakers from the Swilly.

The dramatic incident took place at 1.20pm on Monday and triggered the launch of Lough Swilly Lifeboat.

Euan Robinson and two Rathmullan lifeguards assisted the casualties, who were in the water off Rathmullan.

They were subsequently recovered from the water

by Lough Swilly Ferry crew members.

The pair, an uncle and niece from County Antrim, were on holiday in Donegal when the incident took place.

They were sailing off Kinnegar Beach when their small 10ft craft started to take in water and suddenly capsized.

Onlookers said the fortunate casualties were wearing buoyancy aids, which kept them afloat in the water for 20 to 30 minutes.

A local man described how they had tried to swim to the shore but got caught in the current.

Lifeboat crew members boarded the ferry, to assess the condition of the casualties, who were administered casualty care, before being passed over to the Letterkenny University Hospitl ambulance crew, which was waiting at Rathmullan Pier.

Film festival boost Donegal is to get a tourism boost next month with the staging of an international film festival in the peninsula.

The Disappear Here Film Festival, being staged in Ballyliffin from September 22-24, will be attended by film makers from throughout the world and will feature masterclasses and workshops. Almost 50 films - shorts, documentaries, animation and feature-length, will be screened.

The festival will be opened by former professional boxer, middleweight John Duddy, whose film, "Emerald City" - which he produced and stars in - will be shown at the opening. Films will be screened in a "cinema" in the Ballyliffin Hotel and a "mobile cinema" to be located in the village.

The festival will be brought to a close by local band The Plea who will perform in concert in the Ballyliffin Hotel.

The brainchild behind the festival is, Michael McLaughlin. Born and brought up in Ballyliffin, he said the staging of the festival was a "dream come true" for him.

Speaking at the festival's launch, he said: "It has been an idea I have been thinking and working on from about since 2012.

"I am an actor and film maker, as well as a business owner in Donegal, and I thought Ballyliffin was the ideal location for a film

Local Irish teacher lifts lid on being Rose of Tralee Escort

A local teacher has lifted the lid on his time as being one of the escorts at this year’s Rose of Tralee Festival.

Errigal College Irish teacher, Eamonn Collum was among the group of lucky men who accompanied the beautiful Roses throughout the week. He revealed however that the job of a Rose escort, is not as glamourious as one would think.

“It was a busy, intense week and we didn’t get a break at all,” Eamon said.

“We had to attend loads of different events and were bussed from here to there to everywhere. “Always in a hurry and often having to change clothes. I had to put on a tuxedo and turn myself out to look like James Bond; and I only had ten minutes to do it every day! It was exhausting but it was well worth it because it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Becoming an escort in the Rose of Tralee is the hope of many young men and Eamonn had to go through a number of interviews and tests before being selected. He applied in January and went through a ‘Skype’ interview in March. He then qualified for two interviews:

one involving a group interview and then an individual grilling, before heading to Kerry for a final interview during Bootcamp week.

Despite the fact that Eamonn had broken his leg in a staff-student match in May, he had made such a good impression on the judges that he was one of the 65 escorts selected.

“The most important job for an escort is to be there for your Rose, at all times. I chaperoned the Rose of Western Canada, Sinead McGahern for the first few days and then the Rose

of Limerick, Kayleigh Maher for the remainder of the festival.

“Escorts have to be courteous and polite. Sometimes I even had to carry my Rose’s handbag.

“We were under pressure all the time, but we knew that the Roses were under a lot more pressure so we never had time to think about ourselves.”

Eamonn was not alone on his journey as his fellow Errigal College teachers Martin McGrory and David McHale made the long journey south to support their friend and colleague.

The young Irish teacher will now have a busy schedule ahead of him in the coming trying to juggle his school commitments and his Rose related engagements including trips to New York and Germany.

Errigal College Principal, Charlie Cannon spoke of his pride in Eamonn: “We are delighted that the world got to see one of our teachers rising to the challenge of being a busy escort for the festival. Eamonn is a great teacher and we just knew he would have no problem handling the pressure.”

Donegal Airport wants 'through connections' Donegal Airport is requesting “through connections” with the UK and Europe via domestic flights to Dublin.

The request was made as part of a tender to operate the Donegal-Dublin service, the airport said that links with the UK and Europe would “contribute substantially” to the domestic service, according to Fora.ie.

The move would see passengers purchase flights to main destinations in one booking.

Flights to Dublin that are state-subsidised are currently operated by Stobart Air under franchise with Aer Lingus Regional.

“The Aer Lingus Regional branding is very beneficial and markets are now accessible through the Aer Lingus network that heretofore were not, such as the US and Canada,” said Donegal Airport in the tender document. “ H o w e v e r, additional through connections to the UK and Europe would contribute substantially to the Donegal route and deliver on government tourism policy on regional access.”

The dossier described Donegal Airport as a vital element of infrastructure due to a poor road network, limited buses and no rail service.

He admitted criminal damage to a porch window pane and trespass at Oatfield Bungalow, Ramelton Road, Letterkenny. The offences occurred on the evening of August 22.

Defence solicitor Rory O’Brien said: “He had been living in Holland for the last six months. He developed a relationship with a Polish girl in Letterkenny. Both parties agreed that he would come here. All that romance did not translate into the real world.

He came here with nothing.”

Homeless man appears before court after online relationship ends badly A 21-year-old Polish man who was arrested for trespass and criminal damage was squatting in a derelict house because he had no home and no money.

He had moved to Donegal a week earlier to be with a woman with whom he had an online relationship. However, it had not worked out and he was left with nowhere to stay.

The solicitor said Wisniewski had been fully co-operative, straight and honest in relation to the offences. He had contacted the Polish Consulat to ask for help.

“They will assist but only if he can get there in person,” said Mr O’Brien.

Judge Deirdre Gearty agreed to grant bail on the defendant’s own bond of €50.

“I am inclined to adjourn it for a week and finalise it in his absence if necessary,” she said.

Donegal TD Pearse Doherty has raised concerns regarding its decision to remove the Irish language option from its newer ATM machines.

Urging the Bank to reverse its decision, Deputy Doherty said: "The decision by the Bank not to offer an Irish language option at new Bank of Ireland ATMs is a backward step in my view, and undermines the rights of Irish language speakers."

Donegal reaches out to USA Donegal Tourism recently completed a very successful Trade Mission to the US, which saw representatives positively engage with members of the Diaspora and International Tour Operators.

Three major American cities, all renowned for their strong Irish communities, were visited on the whistlestop tour, which included Donegal Tourismâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest Irish festival.

Barney McLaughlin, Head of Tourism for Donegal Co. Council and Sarah Meehan, Marketing Officer for Donegal Tourism along with Deirdre McGlone and Sheila Russell from Harveyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Point embarked on the trip that took in New York, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

The New York and Chicago visits were both a one night stay where the trade representatives hosted a Donegal Gathering Evening which was attended by members of the Diaspora, local media, and some very prominent Tour Operators in each city.

These events involved presentations outlining the beauty and accessibility of Donegal and emphasising that Donegal is open for business.

Mr McLaughlin said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The opportunity to meet people face to face in an informal

setting proved to be very advantageous in terms of delivering our message and making contact with many tour operators.

"Obviously, time will tell just how successful this mission was, but based on the positive feedback and interest we encountered, I feel that the business contacts that have been established will bear fruit for many years to come. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Up to fifty tour operators attended each evening and the fact that these business people had the opportunity to engage with ordinary members of our Diaspora as they viewed stunning images of Donegal proved to be a selling point that far outweighs any marketing strategy or advertising campaign.â&#x20AC;?

Free health checks

A range of free health checks will be held in the Ray Community Centre in Rathmullan this month.

Men and Women on the Move is a programme aimed at adult men and women to get them active, have fun and improve their fitness levels.

It involves twice-weekly physical activity sessions that are leader led and we have 2 tutors at each session.

There will also be the opportunity to have a health check carried out looking at Blood Pressure, Heart Rate, Diabetes Risk Assessment, Height, Weight, Waist Circumference, Body Mass Index and also a I mile test. This will take place on Monday, September 4 at 8pm for women and Tuesday, September 5 at 8pm for men.

These tests will be repeated at a later date to check your progress while on the programme.

Meanwhile, the ‘Children on the Move’ programme will be recommencing on September 11.

Local girl climbs Kilimanjaro It’s surely a rarity or even possibly the first time ever that the Donegal GAA shirt has been so proudly displayed at the top of one of the worlds greatest and most famous mountains.

Yet this happened just a few weeks ago when a young Dubai based Letterkenny teacher, Nicola O’Donnell, conquered Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, at her first attempt.

undertook this dangerous climb in order to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to her heart.

The Amani Children’s Home in Moshi, Tanzania, is a safe haven for the many street children of a large municipality of a hundred and fifty thousand people, many of whom live in poverty.

It also provides education, counselling and much needed medical care for these impoverished children and where this dedicated young teacher volunteered her time there ahead of her ascent.

Although a relative novice, Nicola prepared well for this gruelling and often treacherous climb of the famous dormant volcano, one that rises to nineteen thousand, three hundred and forty one feet, where temperatures can fall at night to minus 40 degrees, and where altitude sickness can even cause loss of life for the unwary and unprepared.

So determined was she to accomplish this ambitious but hazardous mission, that Nicola travelled unaccompanied to Tanzania, and on to the mountain alone, before been place in an all male team made up of two Australians, two Indian nationals, and two local guides.

tough in the seven-day expedition, the incessant cold and lack of oxygen in particular, she was the first of her team to reach the apex of the well renowned Uhuru Peak, the summit of the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

It is a credit to this courageous and compassionate young teacher; to not only

achieve her goal, but to determinedly prepare and then set out alone in her imitative to raise much needed funds for this invaluable cause, and indeed, even risk her life doing so.

It was a long way indeed for the heroic Donegal girl, who as a gritty little seven years old had raced away from her

aunt’s, uncles, and cousins, to be the first to dance on the summit of Lough Salt Mountain.

Nicola is back in Letterkenny now for a well deserved rest before returning to Dubai to continue her teaching and to tell her pupils all about her summer’s adventures on Kilimanjaro.

Son saves mother trapped in their flooded home

‘I am so lucky to be here’

A mother left homeless as a result of last week’s flooding has said she is only alive today thanks to the level-headed actions of her son.

Annette McFarland, who stands at just over five foot tall, was trapped when her bungalow home at Páirc an Ghrianáin in Burnfoot became submerged in four foot of water.

She recalled the couple's

terrifying ordeal.

“I was sitting in the house watching television and the Council phoned me and asked ‘what type of night’ it was up here.

“I said it was raining very heavy and and my garden was starting to flood, this was before 8 o’clock.

“I went and got Gerald Gallagher and he told the Council it was going to flood as the tide was coming in at 8’clock.

“Within an hour it was running down the street - we did not even get time to get

“We couldn’t get out the front door because they told us to ‘bag up’ the door with whatever we had in the house.

“So, I got all the towels in the house and put them all at the back of the door and the water started to come in and the door jammed, and the water was forced against the door - and we couldn’t get out the back door because it was jammed too.

Trapped

“The water was about four feet deep. We felt trapped, I was scared - then Paul managed to get the top window in the living room opened and he lifted me up and slid me out. When he got me out he carried me to safety.

Ms McFarland said she had “lost everything.”

She added: “Everything single thing - I haven’t a shoe to my name, the clothes I am wearing belong to my daughter, with whom I am staying.”

She added “All the wee things that have been gathered up over the years, wee mementoes, bed clothes, everything has gone.”

after Christmas before she would be able to return to her home - something she dreads.

She said: “I probably will have to come back but I know I will be living on my nerves when it rains.

“I haven’t slept since it happened, wakening up in the middle of the night thinking I am still in the house.”

Ms McFarland said she felt “sick as a dog” when she returned to her home after the water subsided.

She concluded: “If Paul had not been there I would not be here - I would not have made it.”

Son Paul, a grounds maintenance worker with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive in Derry, described their harrowing ordeal as a “terrible experience.”

He said: “The water was coming in the back door, not too bad, but it was bad enough. I went into my own room and the water was lifting the plugs so I told my mother to turn off the electricity.

“It was a terrible experience. You have to keep a level head as much as I could try - I could feel panic but I tried to be strong.” Paul hit out at Donegal County Council’s response to previous flooding incidents.

He said: “This has always been flooding and the Council has had plenty of opportunities to try and do something but they have not done so.

“We are disappointed and very angry because there have many times - this field used to flood before these houses were built here, everybody says this field always flooded - but we were not told that before we moved in.”

He concluded: “After the last time when some things were destroyed as well, they gave us flood doors - that should have been the time to sit down and look at the situation.”

Donegal ‘gears’ up for county’s first Pieta 100 Cycle challenge THE route is set and entries are streaming in for the annual charity cycle that raises much-needed funds for Pieta House.

Taking place on September 10 to align with World Suicide Prevention Day the event will be in six key locations across Ireland.

Following the opening of the charity’s new Letterkenny centre, local cyclists will be able to take on the 50 or 100km challenge for the first time this year.

Since 2015, over 2,800 participants have saddled up to take on the Pieta 100 Cycle challenge, riding 50 or 100km to help raise vital funds for the life-saving services of Pieta House.

This year, every kilometre cycled will also be added to the International Association of Suicide Prevention’s “Cycle Around The Globe” to raise awareness of the problem of suicide. This year’s event will take place in six locations across Ireland: Cork, Dublin/Kildare, Galway, Limerick, Tipperary/Offaly, and, for the first time, Donegal.

The charity cycle comes as Pieta House announces it is to add two more therapists to its core staff in the Letterkenny centre to cope with growing demand for its services in the county, and funds raised by the cycle will help

the charity keep these services free of charge for all who need them.

The centre provides free therapy for people in suicidal crisis, those who are self-harmong, and people who have been bereaved by suicide.

Those signing up for the Donegal challenge will take in some of the breathtaking scenery on the Wild Atlantic Way, leaving from Letterkenny IT and heading toward Ramelton and Rathmullan before going up beautiful Knockalla and into Fanad, then taking in Picturesque Ballymastocker Bay, which has been voted one of the world’s most scenic beaches.

The route will then come up through Kerrykeel on the banks of beautiful Mulroy Bay into Milford, before weaving through the village of Kilmacrennan and back into Letterkenny via Trentagh and Glenswilly.

Pieta House CEO Brian Higgins is no stranger to cycling long distances, having celebrated Pieta House’s 10th anniversary by travelling 1,000km on a rickshaw, as well as doing the Ring of Kerry cycle in the past. He explains that the Pieta 100 is a unique, welcoming event which is open to individuals and teams of all abilities.

"One of the key things is how the team spirit outshines

the competitive spirit," he said, "It’s about starting and finishing a journey in a time that suits you. That’s actually a reflection of how our work at Pieta House is done.

It’s about engaging with people and sitting alongside them on a journey which can take as long as it needs to for that person. We will travel alongside them, supporting them.”

He added, "In the same way that someone out on a cycle can put a supportive hand on your back to help push you up a hill, that’s really the job of Pieta House too."

Pieta House is encouraging would-be challengers to sign up online as soon as possible as places on the cycle are strictly limited, and the CEO stressed the importance of the event for the charity: "I know just how much commitment and effort goes into a big cycle. There’s a personal achievement that comes out of it, there’s the achievement of meeting new people and having a good day’s craic.

Ministers survey damage caused by floods

€2m flood relief package granted for flood devastated Donegal Rory Mooney Reporter

Two million euros in relief funding have been granted for the devasted victims of last week's flash floods.

Huge areas of Inishowen and East Donegal were left submerged as the category orange thunderstorm battered the county last Tuesday evening.

Met Éireann officials reported that 63 percent of August's average rainfall fell within nine hours over the northwest.

Homes and businesses were badly damaged, while bridges and were swept away by the flooding.

One of the most shocking incidents of the saga seen a huge sinkhole develop in the middle of a road between

Muff and Quigley’s Point due to flooding.

As a result of the storm, Transport Minister Shane Ross along with the Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) and Flood Relief, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran visited some Donegal families who were left with nothing in the floods.

They also joined council officials in visiting roads and bridges destroyed in the floods. They also paid a visit to the Red Cross centre in Muff, which has lost vital life-saving equipment.

However it has now been confirmed that €2 million has been granted as part of a humanitarian support for small businesses in Donegal affected by flooding.

Meanwhile, Donegal TD, Joe McHugh has called for a speedy assessment by insurers to help Donegal businesses to get back on their feet.

“Many of the businesses are on hold as they await visits from insurance assessors and it is vital this takes place as soon as possible.

“Orders are still coming in to the businesses and there is an urgent need to get people back to work.

“Once again I was struck by the very positive spirit and determination of local people to get back to normal, a community spirit which has been seen right across north Donegal since last Tuesday night,” he said.

Minister D'Arcy was equally full of praise for the people of Donegal and said that no effort would be spared by central Government to ensure the lives of those affected return to normal as soon as possible.

“Extreme weather events like those experienced in Donegal cannot be allowed to have a detrimental effect on people’s lives,” said Minister D’Arcy.

The Donegal Association in Dublin are aware of the struggles young people are having in securing rental accommodation in Dublin and would like to help connect people who are in search of accommodation and those who may be interested in renting a room.

The Association have set up an event on Facebook, which hopes to help some of its members and friends secure accommodation in Dublin.

Donegal Women in Business to host networking event

A grant of almost half a million euros has been granted for a west Donegal community group.

Coiste Forbartha an Fháil Charraigh was granted €466,000 to aid in the construction of a new community centre for the area.

Announcing the grant, Donegal TD Joe McHugh said: “The development of community facilities like this gives practical support."

The Donegal Women in Business Network is hosting a day of hospitality, exclusive networking and shared learning opportunities in one of Donegal’s most stunning settings with amazing speakers and supports to encourage growth and prosperity in your business.

This year’s theme is Connect to Grow and aims to provide a day of inspiration, listening, learning, sharing and networking for all those that attend.

It will encourage, promote and nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of women in the local business community, and provide unique networking opportunities.

Party in The Park A spectacular sunny success Thir teen is an unlucky number for some, but not for Donegal Youth Service.

With expectations originally low for good weather for the 13th Party in The Park, the day turned out to be one of the sunniest in August much to the delight of everyone who braved the outdoors.

Wellies were not necessary to enjoy the sights and sounds of the free one day festival for young people, with sunglasses being a much more popular

choice. There was live music all day to cater to all musical tastes starting with a House set from up and coming young DJ Harrison Ferris, to Tank Engine a saxophone and trumpet duo, to a surprise hip hop performance from Phat Kiidz and friends, and finally ending the long day with Rage in The Machine covers and plenty of headbanging from the crowd.

And that’s just a few of the performances that took place on the big day.

There was more than just music to entertain attendees as Donegal Youth Councillor, Kai McHugh also wowed the crowds with his original dance performance.

Human Fuzzball was so much craic everyone had to try it.

Spiderman made a brief appearance to pose for photos, save goals and even win a game of tennis before returning to his duties as a superhero.

Anna, Elsa and Olaf were also spotted making a royal appearance and enjoying the sunshine in Letterkenny Town Park.

There was also stiff competition all day at the Cube Challenge games, tennis, and badminton as well as loads of craic on the bouncy castles, space hoppers and a crowd full of smiling Minnie Mouses, Batmen, and butterflies thanks to the facepainting team who were flat out all day.

The Letterkenny Youth Information Centre were on hand to answer post Leaving Cert questions and provide information about all sorts of opportunities available to young Irish people such as volunteering abroad.

A spokesperson for the event said: “Donegal Youth Service would like to extend its warmest thanks to Donegal County Council, Letterkenny Town Park, An Garda Síochána, the Irish Red Cross, all of the volunteers, vendors, attendees, and everyone else who helped to make this event for the young people of Donegal a huge success.

“See you all again next year!”

€650 to run their own Development Education activity with our support.

The gospel reading for next Sunday 3rd September is from St Matthew. It records Jesus again trying to make clear to his disciples that his triumph as the Messiah is totally different to what the Jews, the chosen people, have envisaged.

In spite of the evidence they have seen of his divinity in his power to work miracles, they cannot believe that he is going to be killed.

The gospel reads:“Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer grievously at the hand of the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be put to death and to be raised up on the third day. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. ‘Heaven preserve you, Lord;’ he said, ‘This must not happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him re-

nounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.’”

It was only after the Resurrection and especially the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost that the disciples really understood the mystery of Christ’s redemptive death. Now they know what he meant when he said that to be his disciple you must take up your cross. For them it became the literal truth, martyrdom by the cross or by the sword. For the majority of Christians it is the acceptance of the ordinary difficulties of daily life. To follow the teaching of Jesus demands an effort, time to pray, to avoid selfishness, to accept pain and suffering patiently. St Thérèse of Lisieux is the supreme example for ordinary Christians. There was nothing extraordinary in her short life. She died at the age of 24. The details of every day and the acceptance of her suffering from tuberculosis were united with the redeeming acceptance of Jesus which is made present for us in the gift of the Eucharistic celebration which he left to us.

Donegal singer embroiled in copyright row with rock legends Black Sabbath A Donegal singer has found himself embroiled in an unexpected dispute over alleged musical copyright infringement with a rock legend.

Muff man Karl McCarron said he was “shocked” to receive an email from Soundcloud (the audio-only equivalent of Youtube) demanding that he remove a track from his profile page on their website.

They alleged he had broken international copyright laws by uploading his recording of “Paranoid” by legendary rockers Black Sabbath.

The song, originally recorded by the Brummie foursome in 1970 and sung by their lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, was covered by Karl in 2011 on a demo CD, eventually being posted on Soundcloud.

Karl said: “I hadn’t a clue what they were on about.

“I thought they were winding me up!

They said I had infringed on a track called ‘Paranoid’ by The Hit Crew, whom I had never even heard of! I thought it was a completely different song with just the same title.

“After a bit of research, I found out that the Hit Crew are not an actual band at all, but a collective of sessions musicians who put together tribute albums for record companies… by recreating the recorded versions of popular hit songs.”

And it seems that Karl may have unwittingly used one of their recordings when his producer John Grealish downloaded some karaoke backing tracks for him to use in the studio.

Karl added: “We just didn’t have the budget at the time to record brand new backing tracks from scratch, so dubbing my vocals over an already existing backing seemed like the wisest thing to do.”

But Karl is adamantly refuting the claim, reasoning that the instrumental backing track was paid for and already widely available in the public domain and also citing the fact that the Hit Crew themselves are not the original copyright holders… ”Paranoid” was and remains the intellectual property of Black Sabbath.

He added: “If I was a big artist and I was riding high in the charts with my version of their song, which I had recorded without their knowledge or consent and I was making tonnes of money and they weren’t getting a cut, I could see their point.

“But what we are talking about here

Karl concluded: "The whole thing is a big joke! But it certainly is food for thought and makes you wonder about the wider implications for the entire music industry, particularly karaoke and You Tube, not to mention even live music in genera.”

A parent’s first aid course is to be held in Letterkenny next month.

Parents First Aid is Ireland's fastest growing first aid course offering a two-hour practical training course specially designed for Parents and Carers of Children.

In this hand on session, participants will learn life saving techniques from highly qualified and experienced first aid training professionals.

The main topics that will be covered in the course will include activation of emergency services, CPR, choking, burns and scalds, asthma, bleeding, fevers and meningitis.

Participants can also request to cover certain topics on the day. This course is designed to help ease the fear of parents if an emergency arises involving a child.

The course will give participants the skills to remain calm and use the techniques learned.

The course will take place in the Clanree Hotel on Thursday, September 7 from 7–9pm.

New route will ferry passengers to Letterkenny

Vital new bus route launched for East Donegal

A non-profit making group providing transport in rural areas of Donegal has not ruled out the possibility of opening new further routes.

The news came from former Tanaiste, Mary Coughlan, who attended the launch of LocalLink Donegal's latest route between Carrigans-St Johnston and Letterkenny.

Speaking to the Letterkenny Post at the launch of the new service in the St Johnston-Carrigans Family Resource Centre, Ms Coughlan, a board member of the rural transport group SITT (Seirbhis Iompair Tuaithe Teo) said although Inishowen already had a transport system under the group, they would be prepared to look at providing additional services.

She said: "If there are any other communities where there is a need, certainly get in touch with the local office in Killybegs and we will see if we can augment some of the services that we provide.

"Inishowen does have a transport system under SITT and there is an Inishowen member on the board who is there to support the needs of the area but if there are others with needs then, certainly, get in touch with FIona Melly, who runs the SITT in Killybegs and, certainly, we will be more than happy to put forward proposals to the National Transport Authority."

Ms Coughlan described the Carrigans-St Johnston service as "excel-

lent."

She added: "We are looking at how we can extend the local provision for people, how we can meet he needs of people socially and economically.

"One of the issues raised by the community here (St Johnston-Carrigans) was the need to get access to and from Letterkenny - for students, for commuting, for travel for shopping and all of that."

Senator Padraig Mac Lochlainn said the launch of the new service was a "good news story."

He said: "SITT have a fantastic track record throughout Donegal for many years. We know there is a huge gap in public transport in the county, the reason being the transport services are being run for profit but when you are dealing with rural communities you cannot always depend on that there has to be a social response.

"I feel this particular community of Carrigans-St Johnston is cut off and Letterkenny is a magnate, so it is critical to get interventions like this - so it is a good news story."

Senator Mac Lochlainn urged people from the area to support the service.

He said: "You have seen leadership in this community - these people (SITT) are not for profit.

"Half a million customers used their services last year - but it needs this community to get behind it - that means all sorts of people - that means students, pensioners or people going to work - so people need to avail of it."

County councillor for the area, Paul Canning, welcomed the new service.

He said: "It is great to see a local service that is going to link the people from St Johnston and Carrigans with Letterkenny - it gives them access to do their shopping and do whatever they want to do. For the last while they have not had no access to Letterkenny "It will take a little time. Initially, people are slow to change their pattern but it will be used.

Mary Crossan, co-ordinator, St Johnston-Carrigans Family Resource Centre, said she was "delighted" the service was up and running.

She said: "I am from the area and growing up within it, I fully understand the impact of having no transport can have on a community and how it limits people's opportunities, for example, if going to the hospital from here which, unfortunately, we all

have to do, it is a mammoth task - if you don't have a car - there is something like 57 homes in St johnston - which is a significant number in a small population such as this - which don't have a car or don't have access to a car - so you can imagine how difficult it is to make a trip to the hospital, you have to get a taxi, rely on family members, neighbours, friends - having transport available will have a fantastic impact for people going to college, going to school, people taking up employment.

"You talk to young people who say 'I can get a job in letter kenny but I have no way up' - so you can't get the car without the job and can't get the job without the car - so it is a 'catch 22' situation, so transport, in my opinion, is an essential service "The service will run six days a

week, Monday to Saturday - it means you can get to Letterkenny and can come back at lunchtime or the evening - it is a good service."

Fiona O'Shea, manager, SITT, said the service would be accessible and affordable.

The service runs from Monday to Saturday from Carrigans to Letterkenny from 8.00am, 1.00pm and 4.00pm, leaving from Carrigns Post Office and stopping St Johnston Main Street, Biddy Friel's in Drumoghill, Old Road (L11114) in Pluck, the dual carriageway junction at Dromore, Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT), Reynolds Music bus stop and Letterkenny Univesity Hospital.

The bus will stop at the same locations on the return journeys which will depart Leterkenny at noon, 3.00pm and 6.00pm.

Too late!

I was sending a message using my iPad the other day, and when I set it down, up popped a little box with a question: “Undo typing?”

The iPad has a function that when you shake it it activates the “Undo” feature. So the movement of setting the iPad down had activated the option.

“Undo typing?” It’s a bit late for that I thought—the message had gone. Too late to recall it. Unless of course Apple has invented some magic recall button which allows you to undo sent messages. How handy that would be!

Think of those hasty retorts that get fired off, or those horrible ‘autocorrects’ which you only notice as you hit send—Undo, Undo! Too late.

Or the messages which sound different from you intended, and you only realize once the person replies aggrieved and offended.

Sadly it doesn’t seem as if Apple have invented a recall feature. And of course the problem is wider that texting—how often do we wish to recall words which have fallen out of our mouths? Hastily spoken, hurtfully laden words.

“Undo speaking?” Too late. Message Received.

The Bible has lots to say about our speech, but nowhere perhaps more pointed than what Jesus’ brother James writes: “Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil

among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

“All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:5-8) If you want a yardstick for your soul—check your words. How are they under pressure?

When speaking about someone you dislike?

When something goes wrong? We shouldn’t expect to be acceptable to God if our words aren’t even acceptable to our fellow man.

“Sorry I didn’t mean to say that” we say. It would be more truthful to say, “I’m sorry I did mean to say that, please forgive me.”

Yet it’s not our tongues that are the problem—it’s our hearts. Jesus says, “For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34).

What do your words—even the so-called accidental ones—say about your heart? We are what we say.

So what we need is not an Undo button but a heart reset. Only God can do that.

That’s what the gospel is about. It isn’t only that Jesus forgives sin, including all our guilty words, but that he also changes our hearts and minds so that their output begins to change.

On the day when we stand before God, there will be no Undo button.

It will be too late. But now there is time.

Holiday Hotspot – Kusadasi Turkey Kusadasi in Turkey is the gateway to one of the most legendary cities of the ancient world: Ephesus. St. Paul preached in its Great Theatre, while the facade of the Celsus Library survives as a testament to the city’s role as a centre of learning and culture.

Not far from Ephesus, the Temple of Artemis (also known as the Temple of Diana), one of the Seven

Wonders of the ancient world, once stood, drawing pilgrims from around the Mediterranean. While it no longer stands, it is possible to walk amongst its foundations and the remains of its towering columns. Other historic sites can also be found nearby: The House of Mary is believed to be the home of Jesus’s mother at the end of her life, and the Basilica of St. John, con-

structed in the 6th century, marks the location of his tomb. (Like Mary, he spent his final years in Ephesus.)

Nearby, the Selcuk fortress reflects the period of Byzantine and Ottoman control of the region.

Although there is little historical interest in Kusadasi itself, the town is popular predominantly because of its many hotels, restaurants, and lively nightlife however the Kale district has some old traditional houses and narrow streets, and gives some indication of what the town used to be like. Kusadasi is also a shopper’s paradise and best buys include branded fashion wear, leather goods, jewellery, rugs and spices.

Grand Bazaar is a vast collection of small stores and is the secondlargest bazaar in the country, after Istanbul’s. The Orient Bazaar is an open-air alternative. Savvy shoppers will be able to find bargains on everything from Turkish towels to designer knock-offs, but remember haggling is expected and the pressure to buy can be intense. Ku�adasi has a variety of beaches scattered along its 40 km coastline.

There’s Aqualand, at Kusadasi’s Long Beach, for a start. On the outskirts, you’ve got Aqua Fantasy, part of an up market hotel and spa complex, which comes with DJs and dance shows as well and Adaland, with its dolphin and sea park.

Chicken & Chorizo Stew

(Serves six) Bone broths are quite the food fashion now, but making your own takes a LOT of time. Thankfully Sadie does it for you. It has stacks of uses, not least as a hot drink which is like a hug in a mug. This stew, as with all stews, tastes even better the next day. The broth is widely available. Check stockists at www.sadieskitchen.ie INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 tbsp of olive oil 2 red onions, thinly sliced 4 chicken breasts - diced 4 cloves of garlic 300g of chunky chorizo 1 red & 1 yellow pepper cut into bite size chunks 2 sweet potatoes chopped into chunks 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 1 tin of chickpeas 350ml of Sadie’s Kitchen’s Comforting Chicken Bone Broth 2 tbsp of paprika, 1 tbsp of cayenne pepper Salt & pepper to tast

● Fry the onions in the olive oil over a medium heat for three mins ● Add the chicken & garlic to the pan & fry for two mins ● Pop in the chorizo & peppers and turn up the heat to full for two mins ● Add in your tinned tomatoes & spices & stir for one min ● Finally add the sweet potatoes, chickpeas and bone broth ● Add your salt & pepper, bring to the boil & then allow to simmer for at least 30 mins (although, as with all good stews, the longer the better!) ● Top with some freshly chopped chilli for some extra heat & serve with crusty bread.

The acupuncture treatment of endometriosis

Sharing the ancient wisdom that is Chinese medicine

Treating pre-menstrual tension (PMT) with acupuncture Pre-Menstrual Tension causes various symptoms and signs mostly including distention and pain in the breasts, headache, restlessness, a feeling of distention pain under the rib cage, restless sleep, fatigue, depression, irritability, anxiety, nervous tension, and abdominal bloating, a lot of this should sound very familiar to sufferers of PMT. Typically, these symptoms will occur or intensify during the 7 to 14 days prior to menstruation, and last for 5 to 10 days.

Most women experience their symptoms before the onset of menstruation, while some experience them during the period. After the period, most women are back to normal.

If a woman has these symptoms only infrequently, it is not considered to be PMT – PMT is recurrent and cyclical with every period.

The severe painful cramps and the irritability are by far, according to most women, the worst symptoms of them all.

Western Medicine

Many Western-trained doctors are at a loss when it comes to treating PMT. Studies show that over 150 physical and behavioral symptoms are associated with PMT. Premenstrual Tension (PMT) in-

cludes a long list of possible symptoms and combinations of symptoms, and most of these symptoms are subjective and therefore baffling to Western doctors, but they fit nicely into the Chinese medical patterndifferentiated model.

Dozens of these symptoms have been treated successfully with acupuncture and herbal medicine for many thousands of years.

For example, a few thousand years of observation and clinical practice in China have shown clearly that PMT is associated with Chinese Medical Pattern called Liver Qi stagnation;

Herbal Medicine

Liver Qi stagnation is one of three of the typical patterns of disharmony in PMT; it is always treated with acupuncture points to relieve the Liver Qi constraint along with the but not always, Chinese herbal formulas Xiao Yao Wan and Chai Hu Shu Gan Wan. These formulas contain herbs that ease the flow of liver energy throughout the body by unblocking and releasing the constrained Qi (energy) which is causing the pain and also strengthening the spleen, and nourishing the blood to restore normal menstruation.

They also work to take away stress and reduce the irritability.

Outcome

In my own clinics I treat this problem on a regular basis and it always surprises me that a lot of women out there think that the symptoms of PMT are a normal thing that comes with the period and with being a women.

Women sometimes by their nature tend to suffer and put up with pain, but they do not realise that long term PMT could cause various disorders in the womb like fibroids or ovarian cysts that may lead to infertility in

the future.

Usually the length and frequency of the treatment is all dependent on the severity of the PMT and also how long the person is suffering from it.

The usual method is to have weekly treatments and usually there should be significant improvements after about 6-8 treatments depending also on the timing of the period. For most problems 12 treatments is the average.

But in severe cases 20 treatments would not be considered extreme, once a patient is 100% better then the treatment would be normally reduced to fortnightly for a while and then monthly, by coming off the treatment slowly there is then less chance of the problem re-occurring.

At this stage treatments would be more maintenance in nature, getting a treatment 12 or 8 times per year would be a normal maintenance program that most people should then follow.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are a great blessing for the Western world; it’s a unique form of natural medicine free from the side effects that plague conventional medicine, is it any wonder then that people are turning continually to this most ancient form of therapy in their

thousands, most of my patients are so glad to have the opportunity to be treated for problems that otherwise they would have to just settle for the normal drug treatment and put up with the nasty side effects. Is there any disease out there that cannot be treated with Chinese Medicine?

The answer: - Absolutely not. Simply put... all the symptoms and signs of a disease are diagnosed and a pattern is created from the information, the practitioner then creates the choice of acupuncture points and herbs that will best treat this pattern and that’s it the disease is treated and the person is cured.

ANIMALS IN NEED Animals In Need (AIN) would ask people to be patient when requesting that the charity takes in animals.

The volunteers are all unpaid volunteers, with jobs, families and lives of their own, and may not be able to dash out late at night for a nonemergency.

However, although there may not be a dramatic fanfare, behind the scenes AIN's network will be arranging transport for the animal(s), finding space at a foster home, organising animal food and supplies to be sent to the foster home and getting a comfortable space ready for their arrival.

If, in the meantime, people make alternative arrangements, please let AIN know right away rather than wasting their time and racking up their personal phone bills when the animals have been sent elsewhere.

AIN did have a late night emergency call out on Sunday night, when a sick 3-week old kitten was found shivering at the roadside in Donegal Town. The calico kitten was dehydrated and had cat flu, with one of her eyes sealed closed by infection. She was given fluids overnight and in the morning she finally drank some kitten milk formula.

quietened down once she joined another kitten who is also recovering from a touch of flu. The crying started up again when the light was switched off for the night, but she soon calmed down and snuggled in with her new companion.

The 5 tabby kittens who were handed in last week aged only 2-3 weeks old are doing well and are being bottle fed kitten milk formula. They had a trip to the Castle Grove Country House Dog Show at the weekend, where they proved a big hit with the public.

only 3 weeks old when she was discovered alone on the street in Donegal Town. At first she seemed to be making good progress but she is having difficulty eating solid food. She is not growing properly and has had to go back to being bottle fed. Fingers crossed for Tiglin.

There was sad news regarding two stray cats who had to be put to sleep this week as they were suffering. The first cat tested positive for FelV (Feline Leukaemia) and was in a very bad state by the time he was found. The second cat was a feral with a huge growth on her paw, which unfortunately could not be treated.

Dog fosterer Anne had another 'Manic Monday' rescuing 6 dogs from the Letterkenny Pound and collecting 4 dogs surrendered by their owners.

Ashley, an 8 month old pug pup, is proving to be an excellent mother. She gave birth to 5 pups on Monday last week, just days after being rescued from the Letterkenny Pound.

Tragically one of the pups was born deformed and did not survive, but the remaining 4 pups are thriving under the care of their young mum.

It was a busy weekend of fundraisers for AIN's new van.

The pub quiz planned by O'Shaughnessy's Bar in Ramelton had to be postponed due

to the flooding in Inishowen as the quiz organisers were called on to help with flood relief, but the quiz will now be held this Friday, 1st September at 9.30pm so please come along for a great night out.

The pub quiz organised by Owen Roe's Bar pub in Ballyshannon did go ahead on Friday night. It was a full house and the fantastic sum of €525 was raised on the night. Thank you to the organisers and to everyone who made the night such a success.

The rain held off on Saturday and the crowds turned out for the Castle Grove Country House Hotel's Dog Show to raise funds for AIN's new

van. Dogs of all shapes and sizes strutted their stuff, performed tricks and modelled the latest fancy dress outfits and it was a fun-packed day for all the family in glorious surroundings. A huge thank you to the organisers and staff. The sum of €500 was raised for the van appeal, bringing the total raised so far to over €15,000.

Dog dental health care Most people know that bad breath in dogs is very common.

What they may not know is that it’s often a sign of dental disease.

The fact is, 85% of all dogs have dental disease by the age of just two years!

Dental disease starts with plaque accumulating on the teeth. If the plaque is not removed, it hardens into tartar. Accumulations of tartar lead to swollen and sensitive gums. By this time, the dog has advanced dental disease.

This isn’t just a cosmetic issue as it can have negative effects on many internal

organs. Scientific evidence has shown that bad teeth can cause heart, lung, and even kidney disease. Therefore, poor dental care can actually shorten a dog’s life.

Just as with humans, daily home dental care for dogs can prevent the development of periodontal disease, control plaque development and maintain fresh breath. So where do you start?

Look into your dog’s mouth and determine if they already have periodontal disease.

Look for swollen red gums, discharge along the gum line, cracked teeth or a foul odour.

If you find any of these things,

your dog needs a trip to the veterinarian to determine if a professional dental cleaning is needed, before you start home dental care.

Beginning dental care at home if your dog already has a problem can worsen the condition and be painful to the dog. This could make them reluctant to allow you to brush their teeth in future.

If everything is fine with your dog’s teeth, then you can start a daily brushing routine.

Brushing your dog’s teeth every day is important because plaque can form on a clean tooth surface within hours, and can harden to

tartar in a few days. Brushing removes plaque before it has a chance to become tartar. Ideally, you should start brushing a dog’s teeth when they are a puppy, between eight and 12 weeks of age.

If you start early, they’ll be used to it by the time their permanent teeth come in. You can also start with an older dog, but it will take longer for them to accept the brushing.

It is important that you try to make it a positive experience.

Do not over-restrain your dog.

Make the sessions short and rewarding. It is important that your dog learns to see the brushing as a pleasant ex-

perience. Get your dog used to having it's mouth touched.

Lift the lips, put your fingers in the mouth and rub the teeth with your fingers. Do this daily, in short sessions, at the same time every day so your dog comes to expect this extra attention.

Once they get used to the idea of your fingers in their mouth and playing with their teeth, you can introduce some toothpaste.Use toothpaste made specifically for dogs.

Human toothpaste can give your dog an upset stomach.

Initially, put the toothpaste on your finger and rub it on the dog’s teeth. Gently rub the

teeth with a circular motion.

Next, introduce a soft bristled tooth brush designed for animals, or graduate to a finger brush.

Be careful not to brush too hard. It is normal for dogs to want to chew on the tooth brush. It’s the action of bristles on the teeth that removes the plaque.

Focus on the gum line, as this is where plaque tends to accumulate.

Dental homecare for your dog means some extra work, but the more you can do, the healthier they will be - and the fewer professional cleanings they will need.

Calls have been made for an aid package to be put together to help Donegal farmers, whose farms were destroyed during last week's flash floods.

IFA President Joe Healy made the calls after he visited a number of farms effected by the severe flooding that submerged large parts of the county.

Mr Healy said the flash flooding has caused devastation for dozens of farmers, with farmland, sheds, stock and farmhouses badly damaged by the heavy downpour earlier in the week.

“The farming community is reeling from the shock of what happened here on Tuesday," he said. "In some cases, stock has been lost and in other cases, land and crops are submerged under water. Farm families have been cut off because of damage to roads and bridges.”

Mr Healy said the farmers he had met were still trying to come to terms

2015. It assisted farmers affected by loss of livestock or impacted by damage to fixed agricultural structures and fittings. It also enabled farmers move livestock to alternate housing.

Deputy McConalogue said: “Minister Creed should swiftly establish a new Emergency Flood Relief Scheme for eligible farmers affected by Tuesday’s floods.

"The scenes of drowned animals and damaged farmyards underline the financial impact this catastrophic weather has had on farmer’s livelihoods. An open, easy to access flood relief scheme should be rolled out to help all of those affected. The new scheme should draw on the experience of the 2015 flooding and the difficulty many farms had in applying for those funds. The scheme needs to be easy to access to allow farmers get the resources they need to re-build their livelihoods."

“They are facing ruin because of the losses they have suffered,” he stated.

The IFA President said the Department of Agriculture and Teagasc should begin an assessment immediately to calculate the losses incurred by farmers. He said: “Farmers whose crops and livestock have been devastated by this freak event will have to be part of whatever aid package comes forward from the Government.”

Mr Healy called on the Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty to ensure support for farmers where their homes and contents have also been damaged due to flood waters.

Member of Donegal swimming club on podium at world c'ships

A member of a Donegal swimming club is celebrating after winning gold and bronze in at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis, USA, this week.

Teenager Mona McSharry, who swims with the Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon, led from start to the finish to win the 100m Breaststroke final.

And she also beat Fiona Doyle’s 2015 Irish Record of 1:07.15 by five hundredths of a second as she clocked 1:07.10, She just pipped, silver medalist Faith Knelson of Canada (1:07.47), USA’s Zoe Bartel completed the podium in 1:07.63.

Speaking afterwards McSharry, said: "It’s wonderful to win here at the World Juniors, to stand on top of the podium and hear our anthem played.

"I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me on my journey so far,” she told RTE. She also took part in the 200 metres breaststroke final but missed out by a fraction of second on taking bronze.

a huge effort in the final, leading from the start to the turn at 150 metres, but it was too much over the last 50 metres as USA’s Zoe Bartel (2:25.68) powered through for the win ahead of her USA team mate Ella Nelson (2:27.04) and getting to the wall just two hundredths of a second ahead of McSharry.

McSharry’s time of 2:27.69 was only her second time under 2 minutes 29 seconds, her fastest time and the Irish Record of 2:27.44 won her silver at the European Junior

Championships earlier this year.

Earlier in the championships, McSharry added a World Junior Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke to her European Junior Title. In an extremely tight contest the Marlins Donegal swimmer touched in 30.97 seconds. From north Sligo, McSharry goes to secondary school in Ballyshannon.

It's been a tremendous year for her as this latest title comes on top of medals in the European championships as well.

Treble is the ‘Dunne’ thing Ramelton trainer Ryan Gormley provided Kildare rider Joey Dunne with his first ever treble at Porthall on Sunday, when Donegal Dan swooped late on to take victory in the one and a quarter mile open.

Nina Simpson’s double at the Lifford venue all but sealed the women’s title for 2017.

Meanwhile, at the opposite end of the country, young Dylan Browne-McMonagle continued his winning ways when completing a treble in Dingle, Co.Kerry, including victory in the feature race, the ever popular Glenbeigh Derby.

Letterkenny AC Round Up Even some of the most extreme August weather ever witnessed in Donegal couldn't dampen the enthusiasm of almost 200 runners last Tuesday in the Aurivo Charity 5K in Killygordon. Young Letterkenny AC runner David Smith made light of the conditions. He had an excellent run and finished second in 17.33.

He took first place in the Male Junior category.

Martin Gormley scooped another M50 first prize with a time of 18.53, which gave him a highly creditable 6th place overall. The race winner was Finn Valley AC's John McElhill in 17.04.

The rain had disappearred 24 hours later, with 'Dessie's Run' 10K being run in perfect conditions in Derry. The first LAC runner across the line was Barry Mackey in 40.35.

Barry, currently training for the Dublin Marathon, was second in the M50 category. John Hughes clocked 41.46 and was 2nd in the M55 category into which he has recently moved.

Richard Raymond finished in 45.55. The winner of the 10K

was Declan Reed of City of Derry Spartans in 31.27.

Sean McFadden took in the Leek Half Marathon near the English Midlands town of Stoke-on-Trent, while he was there visiting relatives. Sean put on a fine performance over the tough, hilly course and finished in 1.27.25. Sean was 9th overall and 4th in the very competitive M40 category.

Paul Lee had a good run in the energy sapping 'Warriors' Run' in Strandhill, Sligo on Saturday afternoon. Paul recorded a time of 1.26. for the tough event which comprises a 4K mainly uphill road run from Strandhill to the foot of Knocknarea, a lung busting 2.5K run up the mountain, a treacherous 2.5K mountain descent and the culmination being a 6K road run back to Strandhill village. Speaking afterwards, Paul described the mountain descent as 'wet and slippery'. The winner of the race was Brian McMahon in 52.51.

Catriona Jennings had a podium finish in the SSE Airtric-

ity Frank Duffy 10 mile race in Dublin's Phoenix Park. Catriona's time of 59.14 gave her 3rd place in the women's race.

Laura Graham of Mourne Runners was the first woman in 58.51. Aidan McKenna finished in 68.27 and Philip Connolly's time was 91.54. The race attracted in excess of 4,000 runners, with Stephen Scullion, of Clonliffe Harriers, a decisive winner in 50.37.

James McBride, in his 15th time running the Letterkenny parkrun, finished in 24.17 which resulted in him winning the M65-69 category and finishing 7th overall. Inishowen AC's Martin Mooney was first across the line in 21.25.

Martin Gormley ended the week as he began it- by picking up another M50 first prize.

He ran 18.38 to take 1st place in the M50 category in Sunday's Donegal Hospice 5K. Martin was 4th overall. Liam Ferry also claimed a top 10 placing with a time of 19.53.

Eimear Gormley was 3rd in the Female Open category in 21.51. Jimmy Gildea came home in 31.26.

Another weekend of great performances

A very successful fundraising duathlon took place on Sunday morning in aid of Margaret Kelly’s upcoming world championship trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In perfect racing conditions the very impressive Mc Ginley brothers, racing as a relay team, were the first to finish the 2mile/10mile/2mile duathlon course in a time of 45:35. Aidan Callaghan was 1st male in 46:26, John McFadden 2nd in 47:35 and Sean Mc-

Fadden 3rd in 47:50. Siobhan Gallagher was 1st female in 52:55, Natasha Kelly in 56:27 and Trish Nulty in 1:03:28.

The club would like to thank everyone who took part on the day, to everyone who helped organise in any way and make the morning such a big success.

Dublin Triathlon

Four 24/7 members made their way to the capital on Sunday for the Dublin City

Triathlon, all taking on the standard distance triathlon.

Donagh O’Sullivan was first member to cross the line in 2:30:22. Ita McGettigan, on her standard distance debut finished in an impressive 2:50:45, her husband Martin, in 2:58:16, also his first time at this distance. Clara Quigley crossed the line in 2:59:23.

Newry Sprint Triathlon

Michael Black was 5th

overall at the Newry Sprint Triathlon over the weekend.

Michael finished in a time of 1:03 winning the M35-39 category. Michael also had the fastest run split of the day.

RAT Race Ramelton

There were double 24/7 winners at Saturdays RAT race in Ramelton. Shaun McDevitt was 1st male in Saturdays 40k adventure race in Ramelton in a time of 1:44:00. Fionnuala Larkin was 1st female to

cross the line in a time of 1:55:42. Fiona Temple also took on the 40km distance finishing in 2:27:12.

Paddy Doherty took on the 28km Course and finished in a time of 1:16:06.

5k roundup

Stephen Robinson was the winner of the St. Michaels 5k in Dunfanaghy in a PB of 18:10. Shane McNulty was 3rd Male in a time of 17:37 at the Aurivo Charity 5k on Tuesday

and Terence Quinn ran 23:07 at the Kathleen Donaghy Memorial 5k held on Sunday.

Junior Success

Ciaran McGettigan was in action at the National youth cycling championships in Carlow at the weekend. Ciaran had two good placings in the U14 races just missing out in a national medal, finishing 6th in both the road race on Saturday and the town centre Crit on Sunday.

Letterkenny Rovers U12s completed the domestic double of League and Cup with a 3-0 win over Mulroy Academy at a resplendent Illistrin on Saturday morning.

Both sides overcame difficult semi -inal encounters against Kilmac and Illistrin just three days previously but put on a super game of football in front of a large expectant crowd.

Mulroy gradually came into the game.

The all important second goal followed a free flowing move involving Rudi Minnock, Caolan Plumb and Sam Harvey that saw the ball eventually fall to Mark McGlynn and the industrious midfielder made no mistake from close range.

Mulroy went close through Ronan Pasoma just before the interval, and Rovers wrapped it up late on when Gallagher was once again alert at the far post to score from close range after some good work once again by Sam Harvey.

Both sides now look forward

to this seasons Champions League and anxiously await the draw on Monday evening.

Swilly Rovers overcame Bonagee United in comprehensive fashion to win the Donegal Women’s League Under-16 Plate on Wednesday evening in Leckview Park.

Paula Irwin’s team ran out comfortable victors against a battling Bonagee, who never gave up.

Swilly had the game to bed with a flurry of first-half goals.

Catherine Grier showed her quality when she curled in the opening goal straight from a corner in the early moments.

Soon after, Swilly doubled the lead when Chloe Kerr fired home.

From another Grier corner, Swilly made it 3-0 as Orla Connolly headed to the net.

Connolly had the game out of reach for Bonagee with a well-taken fourth goal while an unfortunate Bonagee defender put through her own goal just before half-time.

Bonagee never stopped with Caoimhe Kelly, Rachel McCarron and Shannon Doherty - all of whom have experience of the senior set-up at Dry Arch Park this year - woking hard,

FAI Cup Round Two

Harps’ cup hopes end in Limerick Finn Harps bowed out of the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup at the second round stage as they were beaten 1-0 by Limerick at the Market’s Field on Saturday.

This Friday, they return to the same venue for a crunch league game, and will be hoping for a reversal of fortunes.

In a tight game last weekend with few clear-cut chances the first half ended scoreless.

Harps’ Caolan McAleer (right) was given his marching orders midway through the second half as he kicked out at Limerick defender Dave O’Connor.

Harps looked to be in with a chance of forcing the game to extra time when Limerick struck.

Cockhill aiming for sixth title in a row Cockhill Celtic will begin the defence of their Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League crown with an away game at Swilly Rovers.

The Inishowen side, who will bid for a sixth successive Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League crown in the 2017/18 season, start at Swilly Park on Sunday, October 1.

Gavin Cullen’s team also start their Donegal News Ulster Senior League Cup against Swilly, with a home game this Sunday, September 3.

The other game in Group A

want to work hard. Complacency could be an issue, but it hasn’t been and I don’t expect it to be.”

Cullen expects another tough fight to hold onto the silverware that has been at home at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds in recent years.

Cullen said: “The best players are in this League, there are no two ways about it.”

Old rivals Letterkenny Rovers and Fanad United also meet on the opening day of the new Four Lanterns Ulster Senior League season, while the senior clubs, Derry City and Finn Harps, clash.

Bonagee United, now under the charge of Tony O’Carroll, are the free team on the first weekend. The Dry Arch men have a difficult opening assignment - they are away to Cockhill on Sunday, October 8.

The Ulster Senior League has confirmed the appointment of Anthony Gorman as the manager of the squad for this year’s FAI Intermediate Interprovincial Tournament.

The Letterkenny man, who has a vast playing and coaching CV, takes over in the role from Peter Moran and will be assisted by Gavin Cullen and Michael McHugh.

Gorman was a member of Moran’s backroom staff last year and the former Finn Harps manager has been installed as the manager as the USL bid to win back the Michael Ward Trophy in November.

“I’m delighted to have been considered for the position and I had a real appetite to give this a go,” Gorman said following his appointment.

“I enjoyed being a part of it last year. We went so close

and lost out on the last day.

“I know there is a fair amount of talent in the Ulster Senior League and I have no doubt that, if we get everyone fit and available, we will go and compete again.”

The Ulster Senior League won back-to-back Intermediate Interprovincial titles in 2013 and 2014.

Last year, after wins over Leinster and Connacht, the USL selection lost 2-0 to Munster on the third and final day of action.

Gorman said: “This tournament is right up there for prestige. There has been a change of mindset from the players in the last five or six years, a change in attitude and lifestyle - they now see being selected for this as an honour and it should be an honour.

“The standard has been

raised and the players have to take credit for that. It’s been great for young players to have the likes of players coming down from senior level to play in the USL. “I feel that the League’s quality has never been better. There is a passion in this county to have intermediate football in Donegal. We have great quality here in the seven teams and we’ll look to be competitive in the Interpros.”

Cullen is the player-manager of Cockhill Celtic, while Swilly Rovers clubman McHugh was playing in the USL up to last season.

Gorman said: “I’ve known Gavin for a long time. I’ve played against him and with him and his success at Cockhill speaks for itself.

“I’ve had a long association with Michael. We played schoolboy football together and we played at Coleraine together.

“We’re from three similar backgrounds and I’m looking forward to working with them.”

Ulster Senior League Chairman Johnny McCafferty said: “I want to congratulate Anthony on his appointment. We know that Anthony will bring a lot of professionalism with his preparation and organising of the squad.

“The make-up of the backroom team is very encouraging with three men who are very knowledgable about the League and its players.

“We would like to acknowledge the work of Peter Moran in the position last year and thank him for his efforts.”

South Donegal Division Three side Naomh Ultan battled gamely against a very clever and composed Milford of Division One, who had simply too much power and panache for Kevin Lyon’s men.

Despite their defeat, Naomh Ultan were waiting on a few other results to go their way to qualify as the ‘best loser”.

For a few brief moments this looked possible, but it was just not to be as they lost out on score average and they finished behind Milford and Aodh Ruadh in a very tough group.

For team boss Lyons, whose boys played very well against the highly fancied Aodh Ruadh, it was always going to be an uphill battle.

Three very well finished goals from Dara Black, man of the match Joey Cullen, and an improving Kane Barrett were the main difference between these sides. But Kilcar native Lyons was fairly philosophical on an evening where he was minus the inspirational Aaron Kyles and Dermot Gallier had to go off injured.

“The goals came fairly early for Milford and you could see the gulf in class. That is the real difference between the divisions. I saw seven or eight passes on the trot for Milford and there was not a solo or a hop.

“It was just moving the ball very fast and our lads found it difficult to cope”.

Lyon’s boys came into this match with a sliver of hope after forcing the highly fancied Aodh Ruadh into a last gasp pointed free to win in Ballyshannon last week.

“We were encouraged by it and I thought we perhaps should have got something out of that game,” he continued. “It took a great free kick from Philip Patton to win it for them in the end.

“That game is over and this game is over and we found ourselves in a tough group with a Division One and a Division Two side in the group.

“I don’t think those things should happen but I suppose you just have to go with the way things are”, he said.

But Naomh Ultan’s cause was not helped by the absence of Aaron Kyles with a “broken bone in his foot” and Dermot Gallier had to go off injured after just 20 minutes.

“Aaron is a good lad and very inspiring and gives us a driving force from the backline”.

Despite the difficulties and Milford’s obvious superiority, Naomh Ultan battled to the very end and were trying to make every score count in their battle to stay in the championship.

“The lads are in good shape and we are missing a few others and we have a small panel here but there is a good spirit here,” he noted.

But spirit was no match for the sheer flair and finesse of Danny O’Donnell’s welldrilled men who are one of the favourites to take the Intermediate title after the disappointment of eventually

losing out to a gritty Burt side last year.

As usual the Barrett and Black clan were prominent but the silken soccer skills of Tony McNamee was a treat to watch throughout.

The winners were very well worth their half-time lead of 2-6 to 0-4.

McNamee hit some superb early points for the winners while Cian Kennedy was on target for the losers.

Youthful Naomh Columba may have already qualified for a quarterfinal slot, but a physically powerful Cloughaneely gave them a salutary lesson in the sad school of experience at Pairc Naomh Fionan on Saturday evening, writes Gerry McLaughlin.

Such was the winner’s dominance, that they had the luxury of leaving the recently returned Jason McGee from Australia, until the second half.

Cloughaneely outscored their outclassed opponents by 0-11 to 0-4 in that second half-a real measure of their considerable dominance.

They also had the luxury of missing a penalty in the fifth minute after Kieran McBrearty

fouled Fitzgerald, but Pauric O’Donnell deflected Declan McGarvey’s penalty to safety.

Glen could have had a goal of their own in the 29th minute, when Paul Doherty slipped inside the Cloughaneely cover and found Christopher Byrne in the clear.

However Byrne’s blaster cannoned off the crossbar.

The winner’s fully merited their 0-7 to 0-4 half-time lead with Paddy Byrne and Christopher Byrne on target for the losers and the experienced McGuire, Cillian Gallagher The Glen boys were always chasing the game, right after John Fitzgerald, Shaun McGarvey and Martin McGuire had put Cloughaneely into an early 0-3 to 0-0 lead.

It took Glen a full fifteen minutes to score before Ryan Gillespie converted a free.

However they also manage to hit seven wides to the los-

er’s one. But, Cloughaneely’s scoring burst early in the second half effectively sealed this affair as the points flowed from Shaun McGuire (0-2), Fitzgerald, Shaun McGarvey and Paddy which pushed the home side to a pretty unassailable 0-12 to 0-5 lead.

Paddy Byrne had a token reply from a free as the winner’s eased home.

Cloughaneely continued to find the target from Shaun McGarvey, Fitzgerald, Lee O’Brien, Shaun McGuire and Darren Ferry.

All Naomh Columba could muster was two more points from Paul Doherty and Pauric Cunningham.

On the evidence of this display Cloughaneely are right up there with Milford and Aodh Ruadh as favourite to take the title.

put Milford ahead by 1-4 to 0-1.

The second goal was just pure McNamee magic as the very effective Joey Cullen knocked a high ball into the corner-forward’s path. McNamee instinctively flicked the ball into Cullen’s chest before it had a chance to touch the turf and Cullen rifled high to the roof of the net.

Apart from the sheer class of McNamee this was the real clinching score for the winners as it put them ahead by 2-6 to 0-3.

kicked a wonderful point with the outside of his boot from the right hand sideline and Alan Lyons struck three fine points in the second half.

Letterkenny Gaels Camogie Camp Tug-o-war fun at the Letterkenny Gaels Camogie Camp.

Letterkenny Gaels annual Camogie Camp took place last weekend at Páirc na nGael and offered a little bit of everything this year.

Camogie Youth Development Officer, Clare Dowdall, dodged the showers on Friday and gave the U12/14 group some excellent sessions on attacking play.

Saturday was hip hop and art day with camogie thrown in. Girls of all ages undertook some art work on why they play and enjoy camogie and to finish the day, There was also a demonstration of dance moves for fitness, agility and co-ordination.

Sunday was the day of the big match – parents v daughters; 24 brave souls came out against 50 plus determined girls and what a match it was.

A last minute penalty to the girls resulted in Ruby Lynch, age 5, taking responsibility and scoring to give the daughters an amazing victory.

Tired bodies, young and old, enjoyed some refreshments in the clubroom afterwards and shared stories of the match and how they were victorious over the “oldies”.

Special committee to decide on who new manager will be

This Thursday evening the whole county of Donegal should know who the candidates are for the county managerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job.

The County Executive will meet to decide the format of the selection process.

The deadline for the submission of names ended at 6pm on Saturday evening, but the decision by the County Board to put back releasing the names by ďŹ ve days has been puzzling, as it has fanned the ďŹ&#x201A;ames of rumour.

Among the names linked with the hot-seat in Donegal are Armagh duo Tony McEntee and Oisin McConville, Seamus â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bantyâ&#x20AC;? McEneaney, and Tyrone native Cathal Corey.

The only real deďŹ nite seems to be that of ex-Donegal U-21 manager Declan Bonner who has confirmed his interest publicly in the job.

It has also been reported that Gary McDaid of Glenswilly, and Sean Paul Barrett, the

Donegal minor boss, have been nominated for the post.

The selection committee is likely to comprise county chairman, Sean Dunnion, treasurer, Cieran Kellly, central council delegate Seamus Ă&#x201C; Domhnaill, and two - as yet unnamed - ex-county players.

At the end of the process, they will bring back whom they deem to be the best person for the job to the County Committee.

Many observers would have felt that a swift conďŹ rmation of who was interested would have speeded up the process.

However, others would argue that there has been so much speculation already, that a few more days would not make any difference.

When asked about the reason for the decision to wait five days before releasing the names, County Chairman Sean Dunnion declined to comment.

However, he did say: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The deadline for the submission of names was last Saturday. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be an Executive Meeting on Thursday night

where the applications will be brought forward. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Executive will then deal with the applications.â&#x20AC;?

It is understood that Bonner was nominated by a number of clubs for the post and is a popular and affable ďŹ gure in the county.

He managed Donegal seniors from 1997-2000 and is very familiar with many of the current senior squad, having managed them to an All-Ireland minor ďŹ nal in 2014 and an Ulster U-21 title this year.

Favourite

Bonner is the favourite for the job, given his close association with the current squad, his record with them at underage level and his deep knowledge of football in the county.

And it is strongly believed that ex Glenswilly boss Gary McDaid is also interested in managing his county.

McDaid was a key ďŹ gure in guiding Glenswilly to three Donegal county titles in recent years.

He is renowned as a passion-

ate coach and has already got the experience of being part of ex boss Rory Gallagherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s management team.

And he is also a fellow clubman of the highly respected team captain Michael Murphy, who has captained his county for the past seven years consecutively, which must be a record.

Meanwhile, Tyrone native, Cathal Corey, who guided Naomh Conaill to a county title, is understood to have allowed his name to go forward.

The Kildress, County Tyrone native was interviewed for the job back in 2014 and for the Derry job back in 2012.

He is presently managing Truagh, in County Monaghan and was brought to Naomh Conaill by Jim McGuinness in 2009. But the most intriguing candidate of all has to be Seamus â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bantyâ&#x20AC;? McEneaney, one of the most colourful characters in the game. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bantyâ&#x20AC;? is believed to have some inďŹ&#x201A;uential supporters in the county and stood down as manager of Wexford last

week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bantyâ&#x20AC;? managed his native Monaghan from 2004 to 2010 a team that famously had Kerry on the ropes in the 2007 AllIreland Quarter-Final.

And he took Monaghan to two Ulster ďŹ nals during his tenure.

To say that he is passionate is a gross understatement for this Monaghan is the Davy Fitzgerald of the Gaelic world.

He then managed Meath from 2010 to 2012, and after a three- year absence he came back in 2015 to manage Wexford before stepping down last week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bantyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s charismatic character would certainly bring pas-

sion and drive to the jobâ&#x20AC;?.

Elsewhere, ex Louth manager and Donegal native Paddy Carr has been explaining why he was pulling out of the race with reluctance.

Carr had been widely tipped as a strong contender and had visited the county on the weekend before last.

His native Fanad Gaels club were keen to put his name forward. And, he was in Donegal on the weekend before last and was photographed with county full-back Neil McGee But, in a statement issued on Friday night, Carr said he was pulling out of the race due to logistics and his current role in a secondary school.

Malin crashed out of the senior football championship on Sunday following a humiliating 17 point defeat at home to St Michael’s.

It was always going to be a difficult challenge to make it to the quarter finals as they were relying on MacCumhaill’s beating Bundoran in addition to winning here.

That result didn’t go their way anyway, but nobody would have been expecting such a one sided game at Connolly Park.

The Inishowen side got off to a flying start and were four points to the good in the opening ten minutes with Benny McLaughlin and Mathew Byrne getting a brace of points.

Bu the Dunfanaghy side settled and Daniel McLaughlin, Hugh O’Donnell (2) and Andrew Kelly all scored to bring the sides level.

Christy Toye, Colm McFadden and Martin McElhinney scored to put them 0-7 to 0-4 ahead.

The second half started as badly as the first ended for Malin.

McFadden collected a long ball in and as he turned to face the goal was dragged down by the Malin defence. The referee awarded a penalty which McFadden converted himself to the bottom corner.

Malin appealed for a penalty of their own when Mark Anthony McGinley swung his arm back and connected with the face of Benny McLaughlin.

The referee disagreed and instead awarded a hop ball.

That resulted in a free which

McLaughlin tapped over the bar. Colm McFadden and Matthew Byrne exchanged scores from play with Byrne in particular displaying very impressive technique. He shot with the outside of his left boot from distance and watched the ball glide straight over the bar.

The home team were now growing in frustration and more mistakes were starting to happen. St Michael’s were practically allowed to walk the ball into the net. Colm McFadden on the end of a flurry of quick hand passes to tap into the net.

Even with the outcome of the game now inevitable, Benny McLaughlin was still working tirelessly for his team trying

to make something happen.

St Michael’s were awarded another penalty for another drag down. This one looked harsh from the referee but that didn’t stop McFadden stepping up to claim his hattrick.

Malin quickly pulled a goal courtesy of Darren Mullarkey but McFadden still had time for his fourth and St. Michae’s sixth.

Malin tagged on two more scores in the closing stages through Matthew Byrne and Paul McLaughlin but it was little consolation as they finished the game with a 17 point deficit.

Sean MacCumhaill's 1-8 Bundoran – who last won the Donegal Senior Football Championship title in 1979 – are through to the quarterfinals after an impressive display against MacCumhaill’s on Sunday.

And their reward is a clash against last season’s beaten finalists Kilcar in a game that will take place on Sunday, September 10th at MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey., with a 2.00 start.

The spadework for this victory was done in the first-half which saw the home side chalk up a 2-7 to 0-7 advantage.

The initial exchanges were tight and the sides were actually level at three points each after 12 minutes.

But Jamie Brennan – who was sent off later –then struck with the first goal.

MacCumhaill’s responded with three points, all from Gary Wilson, to leave the sides level again, 1-3 to 0-6.

However, Bundoran then got their second goal with Cian McEniff and Alan Russell involved before Tommy Hourihan found the target and by the time the interval whistle came the home side led by a two goal margin.

MacCumhaills made a number of changes, with one of their substitutes being Marty O’Reilly, but the home side were never really in danger of losing in the second half.

Indeed, they had stretched the lead out to 2-11 to 0-8 before Stephen Mulligan’s goal gave the Twin Towns side some fresh hope.

However, the final stages belonged to Bundoran who provided all the remaining scores with Michael McEniff, Paul Murphy and Peter McGonigle all on the scoresheet while Hourihan and Brennan were also key figures.

The only blot on the copy book was the late dismissal of Brennan.

Burt reached their first SFC quarter final in half a century with a textbook performance against Division Two side Termon on Sunday.

With a draw good enough to see the Hibernian Park men progress, they made sure of matters with an impressive display that, though not without flaws, was more than enough for a Termon side that, bar the excellent Enda McCormack, lacked conviction.

Termon needed a win to stand any chance of reaching the knock-out stages, but the absence in the starting line-up of injured forward Caolan McDaid was exacerbated early into the game when Dan McDaid was forced off with a shoulder injury. With Aidan Sweeney handed a black card shortly after for a silly tackle on Stephen Gillespie and Decky O'Donnell shown his second yellow five minutes into the second half, it was never going to be easy for the visitors.

Though Joe Boyle opened the scoring on nine minutes with a magnificent free a good 40 metres out before Paul McHugh followed up with an excellent 45' and Sean McHugh added the third point.

Veteran midfielder Ciaran Dowds added another point before Termon’s first score on 25 minutes through James McSharry.

Boyle sent over free to make it 0-5 to 0-1 at the break.

The visitors were reduced to 14 men when O'Donnell was handed a second yellow for a high challenge on Sean McHugh.

Not long afterwards, Burt lost Boyle after he lashed out off the ball.

But Termon were unable to get the result they required and Burt, with Paul McHugh in great form, continued to hold the upper hand.

Killybegs booked their place in the knockout stages of the Donegal SFC after they downed Naomh Muire on Sunday afternoon in Fintra.

The former Dr Maguire heavyweights have once again made light work of their league woes by making sure they will be in the draw-drum for the last eight. The six-time winners dug deep in the second period with the likes of Christopher Murrin, Hugh McFadden and Daniel Breslin all leading by example in their respective lines.

Brendan McGuire, who kicked two points for the winners, says Killybegs will need to lift levels in the knockout stages if they are to progress any further.

“We were happy with the result,” he told the Post. “But we know that won’t be good enough from here on in. When the draw was made we knew we were in with a good shout of advancing. We’d avoided the heavyweights.

‘Room for improvement’ – Maguire

“To be fair, all four sides in this section would have believed that was a possibility.

The Termon win last week was a big one. It set us up nicely for this weekend. Thankfully, we did enough to get over the line.”

At the midpoint, despite kicking with the breeze, they led by just two as the sides made their way off at the Eamon Byrne Memorial Park.

Maguire and Shaun Yank Boyle swapped early scores before the latter added a second as the lower Rosses men led for the first time. Brother Paul was also on target as Naomh Muire edged two clear on 10 minutes.

Killybegs finally stirred and with three on the bounce via Maguire, Murrin and Jack McSharry; they managed to drag themselves level and subsequently jump back in front.

The sides were all square once again on 23 minutes when Shaun Yank Boyle again beautifully manipulated the elements to swing over the score of the game, into the breeze and at the seaside end.

minutes out from the midpoint. Tom McHugh pulled another back for Naomh Muire.

But with McFadden having the final say of the half for the Fishermen, it was they that exited at the turnaround with a two-point cushion.

Half-time: Killybegs 0-7:0-5 Naomh Muire Gary Conaghan’s outfit were much improved ollowing the restart and with powerful duo McFadden and Murrin immediately making an impact, 0-9 played 0-5 as we approached the 35-minute mark. Patrick Rodgers got the away side up and running in Act 2 with a neat pick up and punt.

McFadden though stroked that out with anther finely struck free. Murrin then took his tally to four for the afternoon with another neat over.

Darragh White, in off the bench for Naomh Muire after half-time, punted two massive frees from distance as just a single green flag separated the sides with nine minutes of normal time still to go.

Killybegs however, composed themselves once again and through Daniel O’Keeney, reinstated that valuable fourpoint cushion. Near the end,

Harry Harden did loft over a free. But with Val Murray’s whistle signalling soon after, it’s Killybegs and Burt that will advance from Group B to the quarter-finals.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold!

Well if that is true it has taken Kilcar almost a year to salve some of the wounded pride from last year’s unexpected defeat to Glenswilly.

“We were jut happy to get over the line and you certainly don’t get anything easy from Glenswilly,” said a relieved Eoin McHugh.

At Towney, on Sunday night, Barry Doherty’s men showed in flashes, why, in full flight, they could be a real thing of beauty.

And nobody epitomizes this more than those darting dervishes and first cousins Ryan and Eoin McHugh.

Time and again they glided through the Glen defence as if they were on invisible wheels just below the surface.

And they were well supported by the McBrearty clan; Padraig the seasoned marksman and Stephen played their part in this deserved victory over Michael Murphy and Co before a huge crowd.

Cruising

Kilcar looked to be cruising when they led by 0-14 to 0-7 midway through the second half after leading by 0-9 to 0-4 at the interval.

But the indomitable spirit of na “fir fada” the long men from the Glen is truly immense as Murphy, Ciaran Bonner and Gary McFadden dragged the county champions back into the match. Substitute Christopher McMonagle palmed the ball to the Kilcar net as at

So, for all their long dominance Kilcar were glad to hang on at the finish with the outstanding Ryan McHugh hitting a late insurance point five minutes into injury time.

As expected this was a testy affair with referee Robbie O’Donnell dishing out 11 yellow cards, two black cards and an eventual full red after Glenswilly’s Oisin Crawford got two yellow cars in the dying minutes.

Leon Kelly of Glenswilly and Barry McGinley of Kilcar also picked up black cards.

“We have become well used to playing Glenswilly in the championship and we know what they are about and everyone knows what they are about,” Eoin McHugh continued.

“They have taken three county titles and were great champions last year. We are just happy to get over the line today, there is nothing won this Sunday in Towney”.

“It is all about getting through the Quarter-Finals.

“It was good to get over that line against Glenswilly something that was badly needed.

We need to put last year to bed for everyone in the club but there was no county final won today”.

McHugh and Co had a savage start with towering midfielder Ciaran McGinley tearing through the Glenswilly defence and hit a rasper that keeper Philip O’Donnell did well to tip over the bar.

That set the pattern for an early blue and gold blitz that pushed them to a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the 20th minute.

Eoin McHugh, Paddy McBrearty and Matthew McClean were also on target.

“The running game worked at the start but Glenswilly are champions for a reason and they began to peg us back bit by bit,” he noted.

“They dugi n deep and Jesus when they got that goal at the very end, I had visions of collapsing.

“Once a goal goes in and you have bucks like Ciaran Bonner and Michael Murphy around, then you really start to sweat”.

But Kilcar did not buckle and Ryan McHugh went down the field and kicked an insurance point, which really exorcised the demon of last year’s county final defeat.

“I was happy with the team performance as we were asked a lot of questions by Glenswilly and I thought we stood up very well to them all.

“We are now in the QuarterFinals and we will take what we get.

“We had a tough battle with Termon and it is a very even championship.

And, like Barry Monaghan he now believes that St Eunan’s are rightly favourites for the county title.

“You would have to make them favourites after their display against Glenties today.

“They have a very good calibre of player to come off the bench as well and we are not taking anything for granted”.

And Kilcar also welcomed back their elegant 38 year-old Michael Hegarty who played

a crucial early sweeping role in front of Michael Murphy as he latter started on the edge of the square.

But there is no doubt, but that even though Glenswilly were minus Neil Gallagher last Sunday’s victory was a huge boost to Kilcar.

Gaoth Dobhair haven’t won a Donegal SFC title since 2006 – but don’t write them off for this year.

That was the message from Magheragallon on Sunday as they swept past a disappointing Ardara side with ease.

Having overcome Glenswilly the week before, there is a momentum building and Mervyn O’Donnell’s charges won’t fear anyone.

The key to this success was

a good start and the game was effectively over well before the break, by which time the home side led by 2-11 to 1-2.

Dáire O�Baoill was very much the man of the moment in the first half. He got his first goal on 11 minutes.

Although Ardara’s response was swift and they also scored a goal, through Lorcan O’Donnell, that was about as good as it got.

Gaoth Dobhair then took full control of the game, mounting wave after wave of attack and Michael Carroll and Cian Mulligan were once again to the fore.

Indeed, a foul on Carroll led to the penalty that saw O’Baoill get his second goal on 24 minutes, from the penalty spot.

O’ Baoill could well have had a third goal before the change of ends.

The second half saw Ardara wilting further and it was almost 25 minutes after half time before they got another point, courtesy of Gareth Concarr from a free.

But it was all over bar the shouting a this stage and the Gaeltacht men strolled to victory and a place in the last eight while Ardara are left fac-

ing the prospect of a play-off battle to preserve their status as a senior championship side.

St. Eunan’s have played in fits and starts for much of this year but there was a real glimpse of what they can do in top gear in the second half of Sunday’s final game in Group D of the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Senior Football Championship as they saw off Naomh Conaill with a bit to spare at O’Donnell Park.

Both tams had already secured their passage to the quarter-finals, but topping the group still provided a big enough incentive for both sides.

The Glenties side certainly had the better of the first half band led 1-7 to 0-6, but partly inspired by substitute Niall O’Donnell the home team produced the goods in the second half and cemented the belief in many quarters that they could go all the way in this year’s championship and recapture the Dr. Maguire Cup. The visitors’ first goal came on 11 minutes with Ciaran Thompson finding the back of the net after a fine move.

By that time Anthony Thompson, John O’Malley and Dermot “Brick Molloy” had already scored points for

Naomh Conail while Conall Dunne had got St. Eunan’s first score.

At that juncture the Cathedral Town side supporters must have been worried, but as the game edged towards half-time, they began to claw things back with veteran Rory Kavanagh becoming more influential.

Nevertheless, it was Naomh Conaill who led 1-5 to 0-3 at the break.

A five point deficit against a team such as Naomh Conaill left St. Eunan’s with a real challenge in the second period.

But they really began to click and with Caolon Ward, Kavanagh and Connor Gibbons among the scorers, and important contributions from Sean McVeigh and not least O’Donnell, they were level at 0-11 to 1-8 by the mid-point of the second half.

Worryingly for Naomh Conaill, Marty Boyle scored their only point after the interval.

The result was never really in doubt as the fourth quarter progressed, with St. Eunan’s trooping off with a spring in their step while Naomh Conaill were left with plenty to ponder.

Corcoran both saw red but it made no difference to the final outcome.

By Gerry McLaughlin Speaking to the “Post” before this vital championship clash, Four Masters manager Michael Breslin said his side were not interested in playing off to stay in senior championship football.

“We want to finish the job today,” he said.

But that is exactly what the Masters will have to do over the next few weeks as they were just not able to cope with a storming second half from a game and gritty Dungloe side who deservedly edged home in a very exciting affair in Tir

Conaill Park on Sunday. 18year-old Thomas McGowan landed a very impressive 0-8 for the South Donegal men and Karl Lacey also kicked some majestic points for the home side. And it looked they were in a good position to kick on for victory when they led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break, after a very feisty first half.

McGowan extended that lead to 0-8 to 0-5 before Dungloe struck with deadly effect in the 40th minute when wing back Christy Greene rifled the ball to the roof of the Masters net after taking a pass from Conor Greene.

That wonderful strike gave the Gaeltacht men great heart and more importantly momentum, as Conor and Ryan Green led them to victory with some very well struck late points.

Masters fought hard and McGowan kept them in touch with some very well struck frees. They threw everything into a last gasp effort for victory. But Dungloe, who also missed a penalty when Ryan Greene’ shot was well saved

by Masters keeper Eamon Jordan, stayed firm and held on for a memorable win.

“We played very well in a period just before half time and in the first ten minutes after half-time,” said Breslin.

“But Dungloe got a great lift from that goal and really took he game to us in the second half. We will now have to battle to stay in the senior championship”.

Championship draw

The draw for the Michael Murphy Sports and Leisure Donegal SFC Quarter-Finals has produced one stand-out tie.

St. Eunan's, who have been in eight finals since 2005, take on Gaoth Dobhair.

Killybegs, who are in Division Two of the All-County League, face Naomh Conaill, who last won the championship in 2015.

Surprise package Burt, who are in the quarter-finals in Donegal for the first time in their history, face St. Michael's who have no shortage of experience.

Kilcar, who will be pushing hard to make up for the disappointment in last year's final, take on Bundoran in the other tie.

In the relegation play-offs Naomh Muire meet MacCumhaills while Four Masters take on Ardara.

Ties will be played on the weekend of September 9-10.

Big game for Harps

Finn Harps travel to the Market’s Field to face Limerick this Friday in a hugely important game as they bid to stay in the Premier Division of the Airtricty League.

The Shannonsiders got the better of the Donegal side last weekend, emerging 1-0 winners in the second round of the FAI Cup. But this game is of a higher priority and Harps really need to extract at least a point.

Seán Mac Cumhaills 5K

Seán Mac Cumhaills annual 5K takes place on Friday, September 1 at 7.30pm. Registration takes place from 6.30pm at the clubhouse and all funds raised go towards preparing our underage teams.

Entry is €8 for over 16’s and €3 for under 16’s. There will be underage races on before the 5K. Refreshments are available afterwards in the Clubhouse.

Schools crosscountry

The Finn Valley Centre is set to hold its annual schools cross-country event.

The event will be held over two days on September 26-27.

Jason Black first in Irish Ultra Challenge

By Chris Ashmore chris@letterkennypost.com Letterkenny’s Jason Black has stormed to victory in the Irish Ultra Challenge, the 1,100km race that runs in conjunction with Race Around Ireland.

The noted adventure sportsman, who counts successful ascents of Mount Everest and K2 among his personal achievements won the fifth edition of the Ultra Challenge when he rode into Moynalty, County Meath 50 hours and 51 minutes after he left the neighbouring town of Trim on Sunday afternoon.

Black’s average speed of 22.2kmh was more than four kilometres per hour faster than the previous record held

by Meath’s Pat Doocey, who was lying fourth in the 2,168km Race Around Ireland which is due to end later in the end week.

As he crossed the line to complete his epic journey around the coastline of the top half of the island, Black was more than 56km in front of John McCormack and holding almost 80km advantage over third placed Renzo Cherazzi of Italy.

For Black it was a personal vindication having failed to complete last year’s Race Around Ireland within the time limit.

He returned this year to the Ultra Challenge a wiser and better-prepared athlete and he put in a quite superb performance..

A delighted Black beamed: “This is an amazing event and the route is so challenging, “I’m delighted to be able to come back to this event after last year and I’d like to pay tribute to my amazing crew and crew chief for their support.

“I learnt a huge amount in not finishing last year’s Race Around Ireland and I came back this year with a new strategy, new training and new approach on nutrition.

“It all came together and I’m thrilled to do so well and to set a new record in the Irish Ultra Challenge.”
