High school audition schedules
The march toward the footlights, Broadway marquees and possibly fame for 30 eighth grade Bronx students passed through a mirrored dance studio in the basement of the David A. Stein Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy, MS/HS 141 (RKA) Sunday afternoon. The students gathered to prepare for upcoming auditions to the city’s performing arts schools with hopes of gaining even a slight advantage over the competition. And the competition is fierce. Last year alone at the LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts in Manhattan, a storied and premiere training ground for future entainers, an estimated 9,000 students battled for 664 entrance slots, according to the school’s website. “We’re just trying to help package and smooth-out the edges of their audition material and give them a better idea of what to expect,” said veteran Broadway star Michelle Pawk, who won the 2003 Tony Award for best featured actress in a play for her performance in Hollywood Arms. Ms. Pawk volunteered to provide guidance and advice to the hopeful students along with Broadway musical director and conductor David Truskinoff, who has worked in national productions of Rent and Hair. The students attended workshops at RKA covering drama, vocal music, instrumental and musical theater. Ms. Pawk and Mr. Truskinoff led the musical theater workshop where students were asked to perform a monologue and a song without musical accompaniment. Even before the students dove into their pieces, the instructors requested each leave the room and then reenter walking about 20 feet from the door to the center of the room to emulate the audition experience. Ms. Pawk and Mr. Truskinoff advised the students to take their time while entering and introducing themselves, walk confidently, smile and make eye contact with the judges. “Remember, you’re telling them a little about yourself,” Ms. Pawk said. “They’re looking for people they want to work with for the next four years, so be that person.” The monologue portion of the workshop provided the most revealing details about the students and instructors as they intensely engaged one another and the material. Christina Jimenez, a 13-yearold eighth grade student at St. Benedict’s, recited a monologue from the title character in George Bernard Shaw’s play St. Joan. As Christina navigated further into the character’s emotional speech before her executioners, Ms. Pawk shouted, “Convince me!” As Christina continued, Ms.

It’s a little trick, but it’s a good trick.” Derek Woods and his wife Becky Lillie Woods, who is the Riverdale Children’s Theater Artistic Director, administered the audition preparation workshops, which were free. Sunday’s session was the last in a two part series at RKA before most of the city’s performing arts schools’ auditions begin next month. Mr. Woods, a longtime personality on the public access television channel BronxNet and an award winning documentary filmmaker, says he and his wife aim to offer students in the borough opportunities to develop their talents. “Most kids in the Bronx don’t have the chance to have the training I was lucky enough to receive,” Mr. Woods said. “We want to give these kids the chance to study the performing

And practical advice was proffered in an effort to ease nerves on audition day. Ms. Woods reminded the workshop attendees they can only go into the audition and do their best — the rest is out of their hands. Mr. Woods said the auditions are simply a way for schools to determine the development of individual students as artists. Mr. Truskinoff advised the students not to judge themselves too severely. “At this point, you’re learning how to perform,” he said. “You don’t have the technique down yet, so mistakes are expected.” And Ms. Pawk said, “The people you are auditioning for want you to be it — they want you to be the one they choose — they want you to do well.” But the adults involved — parents and teachers in particular — may feel the stress of the upcoming auditions more sharply than the students. “They might not even feel the pressure,” Ms. Pawk said of the eighth graders in her workshop. “They’re so young, they’re probably too excited to be nervous.” TEEN CENTER: The Riverdale Community Center at MS/HS 141, 660 W. 237th St., offers a Friday night teen center from 7 to 10 p.m. The free program is open to youths of the community ages 11 to 16. Charred? Eggplant? Soup? Sounds strange, but delicious firstname.lastname@example.org It may seem strange to have eggplant soup for dinner, but I guarantee this delicious nightshade mix will make a debut in your rolodex of recipes. The charred, peeled eggplant and blending techniques gives this puree a distinct smokiness. The soup is also great for entertaining guests who have dietary restrictions. It is simply vegetables, olive oil and some aromatics. In fact, a few years ago I discovered how delectable eggplant soup is while experimenting with healthy alternatives to potatoes for my dad, whose doctor told him to avoid starchy food because of his diabetes. I squared off the eggplant with a knife, yielding 4 semicurved, round slabs. I cut those into wedges and roasted them in the oven. The process left the eshy, rectangular inside of the eggplant. On a whim, I cubed it up and cooked it in a pot with some olive oil, garlic and onions. After adding water, letting it simmer and pureeing the mixture, I realized that a soup made of eggplants should be no accident or afterthought. I played with the ingredients over the years and discovered that a few things would take this soup to a new level. My ďŹ rst tip is to add a nice squeeze of lemon juice and some additional seasoning like cayenne pepper and salt. You can add a drizzle of raw tahini for added creaminess. Second, I’d suggest you char up some eggplant on the grill or in your broiler while your soup is cooking. CHARRED EGGPLANT SOUP Ser ves 8 to 10. good olive oil, as needed 4 large Italian or white/ purple splotchy eggplants, ďŹ rm to touch 2 medium yellow onions, chopped 6 large, smashed garlic cloves kosher salt, as needed 2 Tbsp. raw tahini juice of 1-2 lemons, as needed 1 large sprig thyme, plus 1 tsp. freshly picked thyme leaves freshly cracked black pepper, for ser ving Preheat the broiler or grill. Using a fork, poke 1 eggplant a few times all over. Place it directly over the ďŹ re if you are using a grill. If you are working with a broiler, line a sheet tray with foil, place the whole eggplant on top and put it about six inches from the ďŹ re source. Meanwhile, add a large glug of olive oil to the soup pot and add the onions and garlic. Cover the pot and place it over medium low heat. While working with the remaining eggplant, trim the green stem off and cube it into 1-1/2-inch pieces, keeping the skins intact. Add them to the pot. Season the vegetables with 1-1/2 tsp. salt and stir the pot to coat them. Cut a parchment round that would ďŹ t neatly into the pot and press it down on the eggplant. Continue to cook and stir occasionally, adding a little olive oil to the pan if the ingredients seem dry. Cook the vegetables until they begin to glisten and soften, about 20 minutes. Then add enough water to cover the vegetables and bring it to a simmer. Cook until the ingredients are tender, about 20 to 30 minutes longer. Then turn off the heat and add a sprig of thyme. Check on the charring eggplant ever so often, turning it only when the skin is papery, TV TRAINING: The BRONXNET public access television station invites area residents to learn how to produce a television show. BRONXNET’s television production training workshops have given Bronxites the opportunity to learn how to produce a TV show in the studio or out on location since 1994. After completing an eight-week course, students become eligible to use the station’s equipment to produce their own program. The programs are then shown on BRONXNET channels 68, 69 and 70. Production experts with years of experience in the television industry teach the classes. Call 718-960-1180 to register.
black and appears to be billowing steam. Continue to grill or broil until the entire eggplant is charred and feels very tender to the touch. The whole process should take 20-to-30 minutes depending on the size of the eggplant. Peel the skin away from the charred eggplant and discard the thyme from the soup. Puree the mixture in batches in the blender, adding tahini. Place the soup into a nonreac-
tive pot, stir in half the lemon juice and season with salt and cayenne pepper, to taste. It should be smoky, earthy and taste of each ingredient. If not, continue to season with the juice, salt and cayenne pepper until you detect a balanced avor. Serve the soup immediately, drizzled with a small tsp. of olive oil, freshly cracked black pepper and some green thyme leaves.

email@example.com Shortly into the Motorcycle Safety School’s (MSS) basic riding class on Saturday at Lehman College, instructor Danny Power told the dozen students mounted on idling black Suzuki GZ 250s and grey TU250Xs to try out their horns. “Get it all out!” he said with a smile as a chorus of high-pitch honks sounded at the college’s north parking lot. MSS classes offer a mix of fun and seriousness every week. On Saturday and Sunday, ten men and two women had different reasons for taking the class, which was created by the state Department of Motor Vehicles and is administered by private schools. At the end of the course, students take a test to pass the hands-on component of the state requirement for a motorcycle license. “I want so much to get my own motorcycle,” said Laura Turegano, a Manhattan resident who used to drive a scooter in her native Spain. “Once you have the two-wheel thing in you, it doesn’t go away!” Scott Handler had some reservations about riding in the city, which is not known for polite drivers and smooth streets. Still, the Manhattan lawyer said the MSS course, which puts a strong emphasis on safety, was a good introduction. “It felt pretty natural, actually,” Mr. Handler said of his first attempts at riding. “The instructors are terrific. It’s easy to follow.”

LAURA TUREGANO and John Schrod learn bike riding techniques taught by Motorcycle Safety School at the Lehman College parking lot on Saturday. After five hours of classroom instruction on the fundamentals on Saturday, the students received hands-on training in starting, steering and braking their bikes. Instructor Ed McGary said Sunday was devoted to avoiding accidents, with exercises on advanced turning, emergency stopping and other skills. Between exercises, the teachers shared insights from years of riding on the country’s highways and byways. “Motorcycles go where you look,” Mr. McGary told the students before their first exercise. “Use your vision to set where you want to go.” While some of the students did the exercises in fits and starts, Reion Evans maneuvered her machine with confidence. The Bronx social worker from Morrisania had been riding a Kawasaki Ninja with a learner’s permit for months. “I’ve been driving [a car] for
10-plus years,” Ms. Evans said. “Riding a bike gives you freedom you don’t have on the road as far as locations you can visit and efficiency with gas. My gas tank is eight bucks.” Along with the basic rider course, MSS and other schools offer a more advanced follow-up class. Mr. McGary said he can always see whether an experienced student previously received formal training or not. “I can tell you within the first couple of exercises who was trained and who wasn’t because of the technique and the effectiveness of the individual,” he said. Spiro Hormovas took the basic rider course after getting his hunter’s license and working toward his boater license. But cruising the city’s streets was one adventure he did not plan to undertake. “I don’t think I’m going to go toward the city,” Mr. Hormovas said. “Maybe, like, away. It’s a lot safer that way.”
