Like most of the Paciullosjobs, the Conran home took about two weeks to complete — including new flooring — once construction began. The floor, of course, goes down first. The Conrans chose richly colored tiles, but many of New Visions clients are choosing less traditional materials. “I prefer porcelain tiles,” Rose said, “but we’re seeing a lot more wood flooring in kitchens because people like to continue the flooring from the living room. The biggest change is engineered wood,” a kind of plywood planking which lends itself to renovation projects because of its stability and ease of installation on uneven surfaces. Then cabinets go in next and then the granite goes down. What was the biggest challenge in the Conran home? “Getting everything up three narrow flights of stairs,” Rose said, without hesitation. The biggest reward? Making new friends.

sleek, clean lines.” Generally, said Rose, the design of a kitchen begins with the appliances, and though New Visions does not supply them, they will recommend dealers at mom-and-pop stores who are willing to match the prices of their big-box competitors. Having the appliance specifications makes it possible for Jim to create a “built-in look,” according to Rose. Working with Jim, Angela Conran picked out a number of special features that continue to delight her, including a full height pullout pantry, hidden waste and recycling cans, a lazy susan, shelving in a corner cabinet and a built-in broom closet. “Many of our clients also add wine racks or wine coolers,” Rose said. The Conrans opted for granite countertops and stone tile backsplashes, but Rose said that many of her clients are now choosing synthetics like Caesarstone — made from quartz embedded in resin— to do the same job without the color

“We build people’s dreams, we really do,” said Rose Paciullo in a recent telephone interview. The dreams she referred to are the one’s her clients have for new kitchens and bathrooms, and she clearly enjoys the role of fairy godmother. In 2008, when she and her husband Jim began their kitchen and bath business on Mosholu Avenue, they hit upon the name New Visions because they wanted to be a different kind of company. They had a vision of offering personalized service to their customers while working with American made products that promised to be gentle on the environment — all without breaking their clients’ budgets. Jim was no stranger to remodeling, having spent 18 years doing home remodeling with his father in Putnam and Dutchess counties before moving to Riverdale. Angela Conran, who owns a townhouse condominium in North Riverdale, remembers being a bit nervous when she first stepped in to the New Visions showroom. She had a limited budget, but she dreamed of having an elegant new bathroom. Before she was done, she had contracted for top-to-bottom renovation of two bathrooms and a gourmet kitchen, and she and her husband Philip could not be happier. “How often do you end up being friends with your contractor?” she asked. Rose explained that the challenge at the Conrans’ was to maximize the sense of space in relatively small rooms. A signature feature of New Visions bathrooms includes the niches designed into tilework, whether in the tub area or around a sink or vanity. “You can tuck away all those little items that end up cluttering the space,” Rose said. The Paciullos match their designs to their clients’ tastes and their showroom offers countless samples for them to choose from. Current trends include oversized stone tiles and ribbons of accent tiles in contrasting colors. “They held my hand every step of the way,” Angela recalled. She chose a “Tuscan look” for her kitchen with off-white raised panel cabinetry. Rose noted with pride the cabinets aren’t Italian. They’re all American made. The Paciullos deal exclusively with Wellborn, a company that has done fine cabinetry for more than half a century in Alabama. The patriarch of the family, Paul Wellborn, is still alive, Rose noted, and the company not only realizes Jim’s custom designs; they do it with a close eye on the environment, using recycled and green materials. Once ordered, the cabinets take about three weeks to complete. The relatively light color of the cabinets keeps the kitchen from appearing too heavy and dark, Angela explained. It is a favorite of many of her clients, Rose said, “but espresso and other dark colors are popular and they’re going for Hanover or Milan styles with

ALLEN FRAITAG takes pride in his vast stock of bathroom accoutrements and his extensive knowledge of everything from soap dispensers to high end faucets and ďŹ xtures. we are a bath shop but we’re also a plumbing ďŹ xture store with connections to contractors. We work with customers and contractors to put together the ideal bathroom,â€? Allen said. “When a customer comes in, I want to know why he or she came in. I don’t want to help you with just one item, but everything you need.â€? This a third generation family business. The original shop, founded by the Fraitag’s grandfather Max in 1919, was located on Rivderdale Avenue and was a plumbing supply store. Allen and David’s father Sidney Fraitag, who studied at the Parsons School of Design, used his creative air to design and found the bath shop, believed to be the only one of its kind at that time in the Bronx. The business has been at its current location since 1962. The store has hard-to-ďŹ nd items such as hampers and wall-to-wall carpeting for bathrooms. The Fraitags’ have

shipped special toilets to Hawaii and Israel. They carry beautiful faucets and wall hardware made from chrome, brushed nickel and bronze. If you need lighting ďŹ xtures, vanities, waste baskets or basins, look no further than 141 McLean Ave. The David Allen Bath Shop features high quality brands such as Moen, Kohler, Delta and American Standard. They also sell specialty bath items for the elderly and disabled such as grab bars, rubber non-slip mats and appliquĂŠs. “We cater to everyone, high end, middle of the road and economical,â€? Allen said. The one bathroom item they don’t carry is toilet paper. “We used to, but no more,â€? Allen said with a smile. The David Allen Bath Shop is located at 141 McLean Ave., Yonkers, N.Y. Its phone number is 914-963-5110.

Do not be deceived by the name. The David Allen Bath Shop is more than its title. A lot more. It has everything, including the kitchen sink, which brothers Allen and David Fraitag will gladly sell you along with any decorative or plumbing supplies, hardware or accoutrement you might want for the perfect bathroom. From toilets to shower doors to medicine cabinets to rubber duckies, this is a shop that puts the word “bathâ€? in bathroom. The store, located at 141 McLean Ave. in Yonkers, about ďŹ ve minutes from the Riverdale city line, prides itself on its incredible selection of products, competitive prices, artistic and mechanical expertise and the fact that it is not a “depot.â€? Allen Fraitag, who is quick to tell visitors that they are also standing in a plumbing showroom, points to a sign that deďŹ nes a “depotâ€? as a “warehouse.â€? Allen handles the store and showroom while David specializes in outdoor plumbing. Further, this business is not a huge warehouse but a family venture offering personalized service and advice as well seemingly any bathroom item anyone could ever conceive of. “We give personalized assistance, not like a box store. We have more of a selection because we are a specialty store. People tell me, ‘a lot of the things you have are things I’ve been looking for forever.’â€? While bath soaps, wall art, shower curtains, bath robes and loofas are all there, Allen has grander ambitions. “I want to sell a complete bathroom to a customer who is fed up with larger, more impersonal box stores. Vacuum World has been eating our dust for 75 years By Andrew Gross After almost 50 years in the business, Len Morse knows his way around vacuum cleaners. The store he owns and operates at 5902 Riverdale Ave. is crowded with them — new, old and even ancient. “We have all makes of both household and industrial vacuums,â€? he said, explaining the variety of brands and vintages, “We not only sell them, but we service them too.â€? Seventy ďŹ ve years ago, when Vacuum World ďŹ rst opened its doors at Fordham Road and Webster Avenue, cleaning machines like the Electrolux and Hoover were given futuristic designs. They were the height of modernity, since some areas of the country had just discovered the beneďŹ ts of electricity thanks to the New Deal. The original store, where Len ďŹ rst started working, was ďŹ ve times the size of the current location, he recalled. It had to be in order to accomodate large appliances and a bustling

sewing machine repair business. The Riverdale Avenue location was added in 1980, and its clientele gradually outgrew the central Bronx store. The Fordham Road store closed three years ago. Len said there is no secret to his ability to compete with electronics chain stores and online retailers — he and his staff can offer the kind of know-how and service that cannot be found at larger venues. “We are professionals in our ďŹ eld and can offer a very specialized service. I think we’ve been successful because of the way we treat our customers. We are friendly, make quick and timely repairs and we are courteous,â€? Len said. Today’s vacuum cleaners are lighter, more compact and more powerful than in the past, Len said. “They’re designed for a wider variety of tasks — from hardwood oors in homes to carpeted ofďŹ ces. His store carries several leading brands — along with all of their accessories and sup-

plies — but he particulary likes the highly rated German-made Miele vacuums. Visitors to the store are likely to see all kinds of older vacuum models because, Len said, Vacuum World is one of the few places that can still repair them — with a basement full of hardto-ďŹ nd, varied parts. Of course, he said, it is best not to need repairs in the ďŹ rst place so, “I recommend customers buy only vacuum cleaners that have bags,â€? he said. “It keeps the dust out of the moving parts.â€? Vacuum World also repairs lamps and cleans carpets inhouse. With 50 years in business under his belt, Len is surprisingly youthful in appearance. He credits that to his enthusiasm for martial arts. He has produced six training videos. For more information visit or call 718-884-4600.

From a medical perspective, Obamacare seems smart

Are you bright, ambitious and prepared to put your marketing training to good use? If so, Riverdale needs you.

By Dr. Gerry Neuberg Right now, 48 million Americans lack health insurance — that is more than 15 percent of us — and many more could lose their coverage in a blink. Without access to healthcare there is no preventive care, and illness goes untreated until it becomes very serious, so it is no surprise the uninsured have a 40 percent higher risk of death. Since the majority of us consider this much needless pain and suffering to be unacceptable, Congress passed into the law the Affordable Care Act (ACA), widely known as Obamacare. Opponents of expanded coverage ignore these facts. In 2007, President Bush said, “People have access to health care in America. After all, you just go to an emergency room.” Last year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said much the same thing. But, as a physician, I would much rather treat conditions like hypertension and diabetes in the office than treat their preventable and expensive complications, like stroke, heart attack and kidney failure in the hospital. Obamacare started successfully by extending child coverage to age 26 and eliminating co-payments for preventive care like colonoscopies. Next, the ACA further expands access by creating socalled insurance marketplaces, outlawing denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions, and offering federal money to states for expanding Medicaid just above the poverty line. The marketplaces are private insurance exchanges that offer new individual coverage options to millions who do not qualify for public insurance, such as Medicare or Medicaid, or employer-based group plans, with subsidies for low-income families. The new plans are more affordable than ever and consumer interest is high. However, people should check for participation of their preferred doctors and hospitals. Insurers reportedly plan to profit by cutting provider fees and by excluding some doctors and facilities, including big medical centers, which tend to offer the most advanced care.

The Riverdale Press, the community medium of the northwest Bronx, is looking for someone to help local businesses — from mom ’n’ pop stores to national chains — shape their marketing and advertising plans, in print and online. The Pulitzer-prizewinning Riverdale Press is the jewel in the crown of one of America’s most respected media companies — Richner Communications, Inc. — which serves communities from Philadelphia, Pa. to Nassau County, N.Y. We offer flexible hours, salary plus commission as well as a liberal benefits package, including a 401(k) plan, health insurance and other elective insurance plans.

One of the most controversial parts of Obamacare is the individual mandate, under which people must pay a fee if they decline to enroll in a health plan. That might sound crazy — some critics have called it a “violation of our sacred freedom” — but the logic is clear. To prohibit denials for pre-existing conditions while keeping health insurance affordable, everyone must participate. Otherwise, healthy people would be tempted to stay out of the system until they need it, and these “free-riders” would make coverage truly unaffordable for everyone else. This is like how we support our local police and fire departments – you don’t just pay the police if you’ve been robbed! If enough healthy people enroll, the marketplaces should work, except that we may run into a sudden shortage of primary care providers. The biggest objection to expanding coverage is the cost. We have an aging and not very healthy population served by the world’s most expensive healthcare system. Medicare’s finances are stretched and Medicaid is already straining state budgets. Many conservative states are resisting Obamacare by declining federal funds for Medicaid expansion, while others like Florida are paradoxically handcuffing their own marketplaces. This is happening even though the insurance exchanges will only offer private insurance, without the public option of competition from a Medicare-like federal plan, which liberals badly wanted. To cut costs, Obamacare offers several measures. Since traditional fee-for-

service medicine can promote overutilization, there are new patient care models that emphasize quality over quantity and reward efficiency. Medical societies like the American Medical Association generally support these initiatives and are boosting their own efforts to rein in unnecessary care through programs like Choosing Wisely. However, many doctors are frustrated about mounting pressures and there are some pitfalls. For instance, the methods required to define efficient care are very complex. If they are not accurate, they may unfairly penalize practices that treat poorer or sicker patients, whose care costs are more expensive. Healthcare costs must be contained, but putting the onus on doctors will not solve all our problems. We could trim more costs by promoting healthier lifestyles, reform guidelines for malpractice suits, and encouraging endof-life planning, which should be bipartisan issues. Still, if we want better care than Mr. Bush’s Emergency Room Health Plan, we need to pay for it. I don’t see a problem with added taxes on cigarettes, sugary drinks and junk food, so that people contribute more to the future societal costs of their free choices. After things settle down, the focus should shift away from overturning the law and all of us should start working together on further improving our health and health care.

What’s cooking?

Parsnip soup offers sweet sips Nothing warms the soul quite like a bowl of soup. In the third installment of our monthlong series of soup recipes, I decided to focus on the very sweet and humble parsnip. This white, autumnal root vegetable looks like a white carrot with its wide stem side, long tapered body and wiry tail. Like a carrot, it has a naturally warm, earthy avor that comes alive in soup. Parsnips are affordable and can be found at most grocery stores all year round. But I would recommend looking for them at your local farmers markets this fall. I cook the parsnips simply, with butter, onions, celery and stock, then blend the mixture into a velvety and utterly satisfying puree. You can turn this into a vegetarian recipe by replacing the chicken stock with water or vegetable stock.

with salt and cayenne. If desired, you can thin out the consistency of the soup by adding a little more stock or water. Serve the soup piping hot and top it off with freshlycracked pepper and toasted almonds. You can also cool the soup down and store it in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer for up to a month.

are glistening and translucent. Lower the heat if the onions begin to color. Add the celery and parsnip and then sprinkle salt on the vegetables. Stir them well and cover them. Cook the vegetables another 10 minutes, occasionally stirring. Add the stock, bring it to a simmer and cook until the parsnip is easily pierced with a knife, which usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. Turn off the heat and add a sprig of thyme. Allow the soup to rest for 10 minutes and blend in batches until it is velvety and smooth. Adjust the seasoning

Put Halloween leftovers to use In just a few hours, trickor-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sweet treats. Once everyone has had their ďŹ ll of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bowl on the kitchen table, where it beckons each resident who passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacriďŹ cing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Halloween candy.

Incentives Parents can store extra candy to use as rewards for good behavior. Many parents use sweet treats as rewards for children learning to potty train. Rewarding older children for a job well done cleaning up their rooms or as a special treat for scoring a good grade on a test also can be a way to put the candy to good use.

That’s not suprising given the setting — with unobstructed views of the Harlem River and Inwood Hill Park — and the long list of amenities, including a 24-hour doorman and concierge service, an all-season indoor swimming pool with an adjacent outdoor terrace, a well-equipped health club and indoor parking. SAMMY STEIGER, 9, of PS 24 dashes down the sideline in the ďŹ rst annual Riverdale Bowl against PS 81 at Seton Park on Oct. 18.

PS 24, 81 meet for football fun lost yards on that play, but that did not deter the enthusiasm of the sidelines, which shouted encouraging phrases including “girl power!â€? “It didn’t even occur to me that no girls would sign up,â€? said the student’s mother, Janice Miranti. “Now she’s totally into it.â€? Several of the older students stood out with impressive catches and long runs. Throughout the game, adult spectators tried to set a tone of good sportsmanship. After PS 81 ďŹ fth-grader Joshua MayďŹ eld hustled down most of the ďŹ eld for a touchdown, his own coach called him back because he noticed an opponent actually touched the boy before Joshua had gotten far. “The kids really look forward to it, the fact they’re going up against another school,â€? said Lucia Kalicharan, parent of a PS 81 student. “It’s fun, it’s competitive — all in good spirits so it’s been great.â€? The football game marked the third consecutive year that PS 24 and PS 81 have played each other. The schools’ parents’ associations have organized softball games since 2011. PS 24 PA member Cliff Stanton said the games were started in part to boost parent participation. “We’re adding a sport component hopefully to get more men involved in the PA,â€? said Mr. Stanton, who recently concluded an unsuccessful run for the District 11 City Council Democratic nomination. Proceeds from the events were slated to go to enrichment activities as well as craft rooms at the schools. Ms. Rubin said parents want to increase the number of inter-school matches to include soccer and basketball games. Mr. Stanton said, “We want to give something for everyone.â€?

During times of extreme devastation, children often get their ďŹ rst glimpse of see how communities can join together to help one another. But children need not be exposed charity solely during times of tragedy. Teaching children to be charitable is one of the ways to help them become good citizens of the world. By helping others, parents can impress early on lessons of kindness, empathy and compassion onto their sons and daughters. Children who are ready and willing to lend a helping hand may grow up to be more appreciative of what they have in their own lives. What’s more, they may learn to be seless while assigning less value to material things. Youngsters who repeatedly see their own parents and other role models doing good and lending a helping hand may be more inclined to repeat that behavior. To mold charitable children, families can employ the follow-

ing techniques. • Start locally. There are people right in Riverdale or Kingsbridge who can beneďŹ t from a helping hand. Ask an elderly neighbor if he or she needs assistance with shopping for groceries or could beneďŹ t from your child taking in the garbage cans after pickup. Children can help shovel snow from sidewalks or do other ageappropriate tasks. • Volunteer as a family. The entire family can get together and spend time working at a community-sponsored carnival or cleaning debris from an area park. Volunteer work may also be available at your child’s school. • Make charitable donations. Let children see the solicitations for monetary donations that come in the mail. Read aloud the pleas for funds to help children and adults who may not have enough to eat or who may require medical care. This is an important lesson in humility and helps show children that not every person in

the world is comfortable. Once kids have read about the needs of others, involve them in the donation process. They can assist with sorting clothing and toys they may no longer need and donate them to an agency that takes collected items. • Give throughout the year. Charity need not be limited to the holiday season. Inform children that volunteering is a yearround activity. • Match kids’ charitable fundraising. Encourage children to start their own fundraising efforts and match the funds they raise. • Set up a giving policy. Children can learn the importance of giving at an early age by dividing their allowances and ďŹ nancial gifts into different categories. They can put onethird toward savings, one-third toward spending and one-third toward donations. If children do not have a lot of money in a piggy bank, they can donate their time, which many charities need as much as money. —Metro

A convivial atmosphere pervaded the ďŹ rst annual Riverdale Bowl between the Spuyten Duyvil School (PS 24) and the Robert J. Christen School (PS 81) on Oct. 18. Students from the neighboring schools played ďŹ ve-on-ďŹ ve touch football in the afternoon, followed by an evening game between parents and graduates of the schools. “It really felt like a community thing more than just a school thing,â€? said Farrah Rubin, co-president of PS 24’s Parents’ Association. “Everyone was very happy to be there and said they wanted to do things year-round.â€? After the children’s teams went titfor-tat in touchdowns, PS 24 scored at the last minute to win the game 4-3. (Conventional scoring was eschewed and there were no extra points.) Victory in the parents and graduates’ game went to PS 81, which won 6-2. While plenty of the students and parents brought a competitive spirit to Seton Park, where a football ďŹ eld was improvised on a baseball diamond, bonds forged between PS 24 and PS 81 marked a victory for both schools. “It’s terriďŹ c,â€? said Matthew Benson, the parent of a fourth-grade student at PS 24. “It brings our communities together.â€? Sporting uniforms that came with the $30 participation fee, squads of fourth-and ďŹ fth-grade students alternated playing 15-minute quarters. Several third-grade students also participated. “I was worried because I was probably the youngest on the ďŹ eld,â€? Henry Hubner, a third-grade student at PS 24, earnestly said. “I didn’t get the ball as much, but when I did, I did as best I could and I had a lot of fun.â€? Adult quarterbacks threw mostly short passes during the fast-paced game, in which the teams had four downs to score before losing possession. The only girl in the game, PS 81 third grader Julia Miranti, shined early on with a handy reception. She
