landts, to serve as members and patrons of the Garden Club. At its start, club members could spend the night at the mansion and were allowed to use the house and its library. In exchange for the lease from the city, members of the club vowed to renovate the dilapidated building and its grounds, investing approximately $100,000 between them for the restoration of the house and the construction of gardens. Last of its kind The grounds, unlike the lecture series, were not only for high society. The Garden Club opened the estate to host exhibitions, lectures and experimental planting for all. The house was also the group’s headquarters
for its first 30 years. The city eventually said the group could no longer lease the mansion, as it was public property. Still, the club’s involvement was a lucky break for the mansion — the only one of its kind still standing in the area. Others, including the Hunter Mansion and the Bowne House, were destroyed by the Department of Parks and Recreation under powerful urban planner Robert Moses. “They really saved this house from the fate of the other houses,” Ms. Bruzelius said of the Garden Club. The estate itself dates back to 1654, when an English doctor by the name of Thomas Pell purchased the land from the Native American Siwan-

n the spring of 1914, a group of horticulture enthusiasts from New York were seeking headquarters for their newlyformed International Garden Club when they stumbled upon a dilapidated property in the Pelham Bay Park Area. Though it had fallen into disrepair, the group saw a future in the Grecian-style grey stone mansion, built in the late 1830s by New York businessman Robert Bartow. A century later, the Bartow-Pell mansion — now a designated city landmark and museum with gardens and landscapes open to the public — is celebrating its centennial. This past weekend, the Bartow-Pell Conservancy held a Moonlight Ball celebrating 100 years. The event honored Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and noted preservationist Frank Emile Sanchis III. “We could actually have a centennial for the next couple years,” joked Ellen Bruzelius, executive director at the museum not far from Orchard Beach. She noted a number of milestones that took place after the International Garden Club leased the building from the city. Socialite Zelia Hoffman, born Krumbhaar Preston, was instrumental to the lease. She served as the club’s president from 1914 to 1921. A book called The Herbaceous Garden, by British plant connoisseur Alice Martineau, inspired Ms. Hoffman and a number of horticulturallyinclined friends to form their club. Crossing the Atlantic from England, Ms. Martineau’s’ stated purpose for a trip and lecture series was “increasing interest in fine gardening among wealthy society people.” Her trip was a success. Ms. Hoffman was able to convince a list of 400 friends, including the Vanderbilts, the Rockefellers and the Van Cort-
oy. The original Pell home on the property, occupied by four generations of the family, burned down during the American Revolution. After Mr. Bartow built a mansion on the property in the 19th century, the Bartow-Pell Conservancy later improved on the home. Little by little since the 1940s, the organization has added antique furniture reminiscent of what the Bartow family might have used in their home. One piece Ms. Bruzelius describes as the crown jewel in the house is a bed made by French cabinetmaker Charles Honnoré Lannuier. Mr. Lannuier operated a cabinet shop on Broad Street in Manhattan from 1804 to 1819. Tangerine silk hangings cascade from the crown above the bed, a feature that would have provided sleepers with protection from drafts. The house also boasts a writing desk once owned by early American politico Aaron Burr, who was married to a Bartow. The conservancy restored the mansion’s formerly sunken garden last year, re-grading the slopes, installing an irrigation system, planting new garden beds and pruning trees to open up the mansion’s historic view of the water around Orchard Beach. Along with the centennial exhibition, called Grand Dames and Grand Plans: 100 Years of History at Bartow-Pell, the mansion offers tours of the great house. Students visit the mansion to learn lessons about family life in the 19th century, and there is a wigwam at the center of the museum’s Native American program, as well as a children’s garden. Ms. Bruzelius says the mansion and its grounds host about 13,000 visitors per year, not including wild turkeys and black squirrels who roam the land. “People don’t often think of going to the Bronx as going to the country, but this is countryside,” said Ms. Bruzelius. “It’s a beautiful place to come spend time and be outdoors.”

Sports Bronx Science lacrosse readies for finals By Chris Mascaro firstname.lastname@example.org When Will Erwin was a freshman at Bronx High School Science, the extent of his lacrosse playing consisted of a handful of guys and girls tossing a ball around with the few sticks they had on a paved courtyard at the school. But from a club that met once a week blossomed a burgeoning lacrosse program. The Bronx Science boys, in only their second season as a varsity team, have advanced to the PSAL playoffs, while the girls also earned their first postseason berth in their third varsity season. On Wednesday, Erwin and the third-seeded Wolverines were scheduled to play No. 2 Stuyvesant in a Bowl Division semifinal on Randall’s Island. One day prior, the sixth-seeded girls were scheduled to play at No. 3 New Dorp in a Bowl Division quarterfinal. Only two years ago, the girls lost all six of their games in their first season of formalized competition in the PSAL’s developmental league, a division made for new teams. “It’s been such a journey for all of us,” said senior captain Alyssa Murphy about the girls finishing the regular season 9-6, only two games behind Columbus for the Bowl West division title. “It’s really awesome, that’s really the only word for it,” Erwin, a senior captain, said about the boys finishing the regular season 8-3, good for third place in the Bowl division. Barton Allen, an English teacher at Bronx Science, started the school’s lacrosse program three years ago as a club. Allen, a Long Island native who played the game in high school and for two seasons at SUNY Geneseo, taught the students basic throwing and catching skills, with light drills and some film study to learn the rules of the game. “Only a few of the kids had experience playing lacrosse, but they had interest and asked me to help out with the club,” Allen said. “The beauty and the benefit of teaching at Bronx Science is that the kids are really motivated both in and out of the classroom, and they got better.” The programs applied for varsity status with the PSAL the next year — a process that entails having a coach, having the ability to provide equipment and having a student body large enough to produce a team, among other things. The Bronx Science girls were awarded varsity status for the 2012 season with Allen as their coach, and though they took their lumps, the girls were hooked on the game. “Coach Allen was my homeroom teacher and he mentioned the team to me because I had played soccer before, so I figured I’d give it a shot,” said Murphy, who has six goals this season. “I absolutely fell in love with the game, and we all got to learn it together, as a team.” Allen moved to the boys team when they were given varsity status the next year. Ben Cornish, an engineering teacher at Bronx Science, is a native of Australia and did not have prior lacrosse experience, but Allen knew of his interest in sports, and Cornish was game for the challenge of coaching the girls team. “He came in not knowing anything about lacrosse, but he was one of the

CLAIRE HEUBERGER, No. 11, of the Bronx High School of Science, charges by Susa Lin, No. 18, and Jessica Smith, No. 17, of the Christopher Columbus Campus to score a goal. Christopher Columbus went on to win at home 8-5. teachers willing to step up and has done a really great job,” Allen said. “It was a big concern [not knowing who the girls’ coach would be].” Like Cornish, the girls’ willingness to be flexible has led to their success. Senior captain Katrina Hua, who’s been with the team since its inception, tore her ACL last season and was having trouble running at the beginning of this year. So she agreed to play goalie, where she has made 100 saves in 15 games and has been the “MVP for us” and “one of the best goalies in the PSAL,” according to Cornish. “It was a bit of an adjustment,” Hua said. “The first game, I was extremely nervous. There was maybe a little bit of panic, but a pass never comes at you like the intensity a shot comes in. Passes aren’t meant to get passed you, so if a shot does, you’ve got to get over it.” Senior captain Annie Zou leads the team with 23 goals, junior Caroline
Kravitz has 20 and the girls’ success has created a buzz around campus. They made a promotional video for Wolverine TV, a broadcast played in all the school’s homerooms once a week, created a Facebook page and put posters around the school in an effort to drum up support and lure potential recruits. It has worked. “Once you put that brand playoffs on it, it makes it such a great accomplishment,” Murphy said. “More kids are wearing lacrosse jerseys around the school and we’re really getting the spirit up.” The boys have also done a fair share of recruiting. Senior attack Christian Monteavaro had some experience playing lacrosse in middle school but he’d been a standout running back on the football team until he was lured back to lacrosse his sophomore year. He said the moves for an attackman are akin to a running back’s en route
to the end zone. “With dodges and spin dodges, you’re just moving to the net instead of the end zone, they’re very similar,” said Monteavaro, who’s scored 21 goals this season and will play at Wells College next year. He added, “It’s nice to know that we’re doing so well this year. Especially in our school, and especially in a sport that’s kind of obscure. Kids don’t really pay too much attention unless you win a championship. Notoriety will come when we do well.” Erwin knows that feeling. A midfielder with 36 goals and six assists this season while serving as the team’s primary faceoff man, Erwin will play at Colby College next season. Making the playoffs this season made him think back to the club players who graduated without getting a chance to play on the varsity level. “The developmental team was a struggle,” he said. “We know the
difference of being a team for four months and 14 months. So we’re really happy to be here and we’re happy for the girls team, too.” The Wolverine boys can now lean on young players like sophomore defenseman Doug Chadwick, who learned to play in middle school, and sophomore goalie Brian Hwang, who played middle school ball in Georgia before moving back to New York for high school. The players and coaches credit Hwang with turning the team’s fortunes around, but the humble 10th grader said he only started playing goalie because he “sucked at everything else.” Success didn’t come easily for the Bronx Science lacrosse programs, which makes both teams’ run to the playoffs that much sweeter. “I am absolutely ecstatic to be in the playoffs,” Murphy said, “I just got chills.”
Manhattan College’s x-country coach resigns

email@example.com Pat Slevin resigned from his position as Manhattan College’s men’s and women’s cross country head coach on May 8 “to pursue new challenges in his professional career,” according to a statement released by the school. Slevin coached both teams for one season after he was hired in Jan. 2013, leading them each to ninth-place finishes out of 11 teams at the 2013 MAAC championships at Van Cortlandt Park in November. Senior Mikael Rojeras was the Jaspers’ top finisher, placing 15th with a time of 26:31.69. Slevin was also an assistant on the men’s and women’s track and field teams. The men finished second at the MAAC outdoor championships on May 4, while the women were third. “We thank Pat for all of his hard work and efforts over the court of his tenure at the college,” Noah D. LeFevre, Manhattan’s incoming athletics director, said in the statement. “We wish him well as he begins the next chapter in his career.” Slevin came to Manhattan after eight years as track coach at Chaminade High on Long Island, where he
Mowers pitcher Sam Heskett had 10 strikeouts on Saturday at Kappock Street Field and now has 61 in six outings this season. He earned the win after allowing only three hits, and he also doubled. The Mowers’ Gabe Hernandez went two-for-two with a run, while Franklin Cevallos was two-for-two with a double and two runs. Isaiah Matthewson and Daniel Smith each drove in a run. Grant Schwartz went two-for-three and threw out a would-be base stealer for the Braceballers, and Max Bowden was one-for-two with two runs.
PAT SLEVIN led the Flyers to the 2011 Catholic school state title. Manhattan “will launch a national search immediately,” for a new cross country coach, according to the statement.

ond time in a row, beating the previously undefeated Yan-Keys (4-1-1) on Wednesday evening at MS-141. The Smilers jumped out to an early lead with a hit by Evan Kurtz to load the bases, and Aiden McShane scored after Jai Clayton was hit by pitch. The Yan-Keys scored in the bottom of the first on a hit by Julian Hernandez to tie it up. But the Smilers retook the lead in the top of the second and held it the rest of the way behind great pitching from Gavi Kanter, Danny Drotos, McShane and Kurtz, as well as superb plays in the field by Clayton and McShane. Yan-Keys pitchers JT Rausch and Lucas Alexander pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings to their team close, but the Yan-Keys’ valiant effort fell short.
Senior League SRLL Salvatore’s of Soho Slicers: 5 NRBL Country Bank Yankees: 1 In a tense game full of excellent pitching and sparkling defense last Monday at Seton Park, the Slicers pulled away in the final inning to beat the Yankees. Ari Wigder, Bo Wilke and Noah Gordon each drove in runs in the sixth inning. The Yankees scored in the first inning, as Alex Costa reached on a solid single and scored on a fly ball by Danny Moynihan. But Slicers pitchers Griffin O’Keefe and Gordon pitched nearly flawlessly the rest of the game. Moynihan, who also pitched for the Yankees, allowed only one run through the first five innings, which was scored by Jo-
seph Phillips. Moynihan avoided trouble the next inning, escaping a lead-off triple by Wilke.
West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital Animals: 9 Parkview Dodgers: 1 West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital Animals: 10 Salvatore’s of Soho Slicers: 2 The Animals earned two wins at Seton Park this past week. The first game was on Wednesday, when RBIs from Zack Farber, Brian Alberts, Kristian Ragland, and Robert Peralta resulted eight Animals runs in their first two at-bats. Base hits from Asher Raduns-Silverstein and Ethan Havens, along with stolen bases from Kenneth Rodriguez and Jonathan Katzman helped propel the offense. Animals pitchers Ragland and Rodriguez struck out eight. The second game was on Saturday, and the Animals again struck early. Lucas Ludgate, Rodriguez and Katzman all scored in the first inning, with Brian Alberts delivering a two-run single. Ben Saers and Peralta scored in the third to give the Animals to a 5-0 lead. The Slicers’ Pete Winarski led off the fourth inning with a walk and scored on Noah Gordon’s triple. Bo Wilke knocked in Gordon with a RBI groundout. The Animals defense, led by brilliant plays from Raduns-Silverstein. Ludgate, and Havens, stymied the Slicers in the final two innings. Farber tossed a complete game for the Animals, throwing 79 pitches.

When I was little, my parents’ idea of a great place to sup was not La Grenouille or Le Cirque. Those places were never part of the vernacular in the Rehfeld family. Eating out meant three things: beautiful atmosphere, large portions and value. Money was scare and appetites were ravenous, so best to choose a place with a gigantic, juicy slab of meat to do the trick. That’s why celebrations like birthdays or Mother’s Day usually meant picking up grandma at her Independence Avenue apartment and heading up to the Chart House in Tarrytown, N.Y. Back in the 80s, before it felt like more of a chain, the glass and wooden house at the foot of the Hudson River boasted beautiful sunsets, lazy sailboats and a view of the craggy Palisades cliffs and Tappen Zee bridge across the dark water. In the summer, you could perch on the rocks and throw pebbles into the water. During the winter, an open fireplace would blaze in the lounge area, where Shirley Temples were always in order for children who behaved. Sometimes if we didn’t have a reservation, we’d bicker some in the car before my Dad would announce, “Let me take care of it.” He’d approach the host stand and say, Dr. Rehfeld, table for five at 7 p.m.” The host, puzzled, would pass over the handwritten reservation a few times, and then whisper something to the manager. My father, an appliance salesman of enormous stature, would wait patiently for the manager to look over his map of available reservations. Dad would chime in, “My secretary called last week.” The manager usually responded: “Dr. Rehfeld, we don’t seem to have you on our list, but if you give us about 15 minutes, we can certainly accommodate you.”
Dad was a master at this. Feigning slight dismay — as if he’d been somehow slighted by the experience of having to wait — he’d turn to the manager and curtly say, “Fine. We’ll be outside.” Waiting in the wings during the exchange, I’d try not to shuffle around because I knew shuffling conveyed uncertainty. My stomach turned and squealed as I hid behind grandma’s giant le sport sac purse, half-smiling and half-dying of embarrassment. When our table was finally ready, we nestled in and ordered what came to be the same exact three courses we ordered for years. Clams casino, the shrimp cocktail, prime rib and, last but not least, a Mississippi mud pie. A tall, frozen dessert, the plate would come with a generous slice of coffee ice cream, layered with lots of hot fudge, and fresh whipped cream. It was the same every time. Like clockwork, the server would leave five spoons and as soon as he inched away from the table, we’d immediately lean in and descend up the dessert like a pack of vultures. Despite her zaftig physique, grandma
would only have one classy, indulgent spoonful. “Heavenly,” she would judge. Then she’d let the rest of us chazers fight over the last few bites. Was it fancy? No. Was it experimental? Certainly not. Looking back now, what made that meal special was actually predictability and consistency. The shrimp were always large and fresh, the meat was aged and perfectly pink throughout, the clams (which I bogarted every time) were plump and happy in their golden crust of breadcrumbs and bacon. Then dessert, of course, sealed the deal. This year we went back up to Westchester for Mother’s Day and it made me think about what it means for a family to have a restaurant they go back to time and again to celebrate. The familiarity, the connectedness to time and place, the wish for and delivery of the same memorable food each time. This weekend I made my own version of a mud pie. While it hasn’t yet reached the perfection my memory recalls from the Chart House, it’s on its way and I look forward to sharing it with all of you.

The efficient galley kitchen features honey maple cabinets with contrasting black granite countertops and GE stainless appliances.

Impeccable renovation turns co-op into modern masterpiece
or many homeowners, having a top floor, two-bedroom, two-bath apartment in a pre-war complex in a parklike setting, close to transportation, schools, shopping and the Hudson River would have been more than enough. But not for the residents of Apartment F61 at 5445 Netherland Ave. in Riverdale Park. They took what was already a well-laid-out space and gave it a tasteful, top-to-bottom renovation. With both northern and southern exposures and lofty ceilings, the apartment has plenty of light and air, from the formal dining room to the windowed galley kitchen to the picture-windowed living room. It is arranged like a traditional center hall house, with kitchen and dining room on one side of a commodious foyer and the living room on the other The spaces are pleasingly color coded — au-
tumnal coloring in the living room, soft spring green in the master bedroom, azure blue in the office/guest room — and the colors complement details like scalloped archways, crown mouldings, polished hardwood floors and ceiling fans in every room. Alure Home Improvements from hit TV show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition! are featured in bathrooms with brushed nickel finishes and porcelain floors. Granite counters, colored glass backsplashes, honey maple cabinets, stainless GE appliances and a built-in wine rack highlight a kitchen created by New Visions, a local kitchen and bath design team. Amenities in the cat-friendly building include deeded indoor parking, a live-in super, children’s playground and bike storage in the basement. According to Eric Cummert of Halstead Properties, the asking price is $315,000.
