SoBro show rewrites the language of city planning By Ashley Helms

series of sculptures, prints and other works at Casita Maria in the south Bronx gives a new meaning to the phrase Alphabet City. Elizabeth Hamby’s current show depicts buildings and other city structures as letters to create a new lexicon about New York. Her show, itself called Alphabet City, covers the walls, ceiling and other parts of the gallery. “It’s a way to experience all of the relationships between the prints, shapes on the wall and outside the windows,” Ms. Hamby said. In two of her pieces, the artists uses an aerial view of public housing buildings to show they are shaped like the letter h. The result is a whimsical new take on a familiar part of the cityscape. Ms. Hamby also painted alphabet shapes in bright pink, yellow and green on the walls of the exhibition. She said she wanted to play on the urban planning practice of color-coding maps and plans to identify different kinds of buildings. “I wanted to create a really fun environment in the space,” Ms. Hamby added. “The people who are going to see the work the most are kids, and I wanted it to be a fun, exciting space to be in.” The artist’s inspiration came from her senior thesis advisor at Parsons The New School for Design, who suggested Ms. Hamby study urban planning. “I spent time hand rendering maps and graphics of cities and I got to know the shapes of buildings in an intimate way,” Ms. Hamby said. “The city is like a whole alphabet that you have to learn.” In addition to her visual art, Ms. Hamby leads Boogie Down Rides in the Bronx, in which she takes people on bike trips throughout the borough and asks them to imagine they are part of a performance.

Christine Licata, Casita Maria’s director of performing and visual arts, shared her interpretation of Ms. Hamby’s show during a recent visit. “You think of architecture as [something] either you’re in or out of. But it’s always something you would never see as a language that you work with every day and see every day,” she said. Casita Maria has provided social services, community outreach and creative forums for the past 80 years. It began by working with mostly migrant Hispanic families in East Harlem, and moved to the south Bronx in 1961. Ms. Hamby’s show at Casita Maria, located at 928 Simpson St., runs until Wednesday, July 9. Admission is free. Ms. Hamby will host a special lab on Thursday, June 5 at 4 p.m. and an artist talk on Wednesday, July 9 at 6 p.m.

K’bridge painter calls on roots in photography By Marcelle McIntosh

GLORIA KARLSON’S ‘Kaleidoscope of Time.’

loria Karlson’s art is about exploration in time and space. The longtime Kingsbridge resident often applies colorful paints to black and white photos to create a reality all her own, but based, she explains, on her subjects’ reactions to the environment around them. Her technique intentionally blurs the lines where colors intersect — giving her works an air of mystery — yet the subjects in the underlying photos are positioned to be noticed and identified. “My work deals with these subterranean rumblings of my mind, of my psyche,” Ms. Karlson said during a recent interview at her home and studio, where the rumblings of an occasional No. 1 train were the only sounds that penetrated the quiet space. The living room walls are neatly

lined with the artist’s own colorful paintings and black-and-white photographs as well as works by her friends. One of them, Kaleidoscope of Time, is a painting in which both old and new are present simultaneously. It depicts a young girl clothed in the same earthtoned colors as the landscape she occupies and a statue of an old man who appears to be staring at her like a voyeur. The piece evokes a contrast between generations. Ms. Karlson’s life has been a bit of an exploration of time and space, too. She moved around a lot during her childhood, and she went to Fordham University to study psychology, not art. But, after graduating with high honors, she didn’t become a therapist or a social worker. Instead, she landed a job as an agent for photographers. Meeting with ad agency creative directors and gallery owners, toting around and promoting portfolios, gave Ms. Karlson the inspiration to pick up a camera of her own. What began as

a hobby soon became a career and a way of life. “I carried a camera all the time, practically to bed.” Ms. Karlson recalled. “Literally I would get up, have breakfast and go walking around the city.” For 25 years, she shared her knowledge of art and photography with students at Parsons The New School for Design in Chelsea, where she encouraged them to view the attractions of the city as she did, as their living classroom. In her own photography, Ms. Karlson has long striven to capture candid shots that show people in their natural habitats, whether urban or rural. Thus, timing is a critical element of her work. In a split second, a perfect shot or angle could be lost. More than ago — on the cover of the New School’s 1978 photography department brochure — one of Ms. Karlson’s photographs depicted a clown and a little boy sitting on the base of a sculpture making faces at (Continued on page B2)

Hudson River French Country Revival >,:;:;:;9,,;‹>,)

Serenely perched at the crest of Palisade Avenue and West 231st Street, this home never misses a sunset over the picturesque Hudson River. Master craftsmen of the 1930’s used rich materials of stone, slate, brick, and oak hard-wood in constructing this stately residence which occupies a spacious yet private corner lot. The Hudson River views as you approach the front door will take your breath away. The central hall colonial is well laid out, bright, and spacious.

(Continued from page B1) each other. She caught the tableau at the exact right moment, Ms. Karlson recalls. Just after the photo was taken the mother’s expression changed as her attention shifted to the camera. In an instant, the heartwarming moment was gone. On another occasion, she tried to “stop time while on a drive with her husband through the Adirondack Mountains. She jumped into the middle of a narrow road to stop a driver in his tracks and snap his picture. The man was driving an antique car, with no doors or windshield, with his dog as copilot. The photo eventually became a painting called Forever Young. “Be brave, she tells her students, “and fast and always prepared for a great shot to pop out of nowhere. Ms. Karlson’s photos are shot exclusively in black and white, even though, she said with a wave to a couch draped with a purple and a pink blanket, “I love color. She believes that black-and-white photos allow the chance to distinctly

compare and contrast the subjects within them. Her approach has led to recognition and success. “In my lifetime, I had about 15 photographic shows and 15 art shows,â€? Ms. Karlson recalled, at venues including the Hudson River Museum, the Lincoln Center for the Perfoming Arts and almost every library in the Bronx. Not long ago, Ms. Karlson came to believe she had said all she wanted to say with her photographs. She donated her cameras, tripods and printing equipment to the Alliance School and dedicated herself to painting. That medium has since become a source of great personal pleasure for her, with themes she ďŹ rst explored as a photographer continuing to engage her. Ms. Karlson’s work — along with other artists’ from the Riverdale Art Association — is on exhibit at the Riverdale-Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture until May 31. The best times to visit are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or Sundays after 11 a.m.

Sports Mixed results for Clinton tennis squads By Chris Mascaro Tiffany Mfoafo lost her first singles match in DeWitt Clinton High School’s second-round loss in the PSAL girls tennis B Division tournament on Monday at Van Cortlandt Park. The senior dropped a 10-5 extended set as the eighth-seeded Governors lost to No. 9 John Bowne of Queens — only Clinton’s second loss in 11 matches this season. But after four years on the team, sharing the league title this season and becoming a strong leader, Mfoafo’s disappointment was overshadowed by another emotion. “I felt accomplished to be a part of our team for four years,” she said. “I tried out for this team to be a more social person, and I’ve learned how to be a team player in a leadership role.” Added head coach Mark Morey, who is in his eighth season as coach: “One loss doesn’t make a season. I’m blessed to coach this team because these young ladies do the right things, tennis-wise and school-wise.” The Clinton boys also felt a sense of accomplishment on Monday, followed by a sense of revenge. The seventh-seeded boys defeated Manhattan Center for Science & Math, 4-1, in the second round of the PSAL B Division tournament. The win set Clinton up for a rematch against No. 2 Queens High School for Science, the team that knocked Clinton out of the playoffs last season, in a quarterfinal match that was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at York College. “The only thing I could say to our team was that it’s going to be the same coach, but a different team,” Governors coach John Maguire said about the rematch. “They only beat us 3-2 last year, so it could be a different story this year. Who’s it gonna be?” The boys moved to 12-1 on Monday by winning all three singles matches. Junior Chanze German won 10-4 at first singles, senior Shui Yuen, who has lost only one match this season, earned a 10-1 victory at second singles, and sophomore Helder Nti had a 10-5 decision at third singles. Narinedatt Puni and Kenneth Davis, a football player who is in his first year on the tennis team, won their second doubles match. “We have an eclectic group,” Maguire said, “but they are really, really tight knit. It’s really cool for them to advance this far.” The girls may have advanced further had it not been for two players being thrust out of position due to senior Natasha Harris’ knee injury. Harris is the Governors’ second singles player, and so senior Josselin Lopez was forced to move up from third singles, and she suffered a 10-2 loss. Sophomore Alliya Foster, playing in her first career singles match, lost 10-2 at third singles. Clinton’s lone point came at second doubles, where Marien Rodriguez and Siria Trochez earned a 10-5 win. “Usually when we’re playing, we tend to ask people what the other scores are, and it was really sad to know that everyone else had lost,” said Trochez, a sophomore. “But the girls were really cheerful toward our doubles team for winning. We were just so sad because it ended so suddenly.” Still, like Mfoafo said, the Governors had plenty to be proud of this season.

Little League round-up A League of Our Own Orioles: 13 Blue Jays: 6 Samantha Horowitz hit three home runs and drove in seven RBIs for the Orioles. Anna Jonas, and Esther Eisenstat also homered on a day where balls were flying deep into the outfield. Blue Jays pitcher Elly Schanzer crushed a home run, but the day belonged to the Orioles. They scored 10 runs in the first four innings, including a five-run drive in the third. Danielle Dorfman had four hits and scored four runs, while Noa Mintz reached base all four times up. Blue Jays rookie outfielder Mika Hartman made a spectacular grab, exciting the crowd.

South Riverdale Majors Division Dr. Hertz Dental Smilers: 15 Regal Pharmacy Rx-ers: 7 Smilers pitcher Danny Drotos had seven strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings on Saturday at M.S. 141, and was backed offensively by two bases-clearing hits — Evan Kurtz’s double and Aiden McShane’s triple. Kurtz also made two

great defensive plays while pitching in the last inning to secure the win. The Smilers were hoping to keep their momentum going when they squared off against the first-place Yan-keys on Wednesday. The Rx-ers fought valiantly, led by Gabriel Deener, whose three singles drove in three runs. Jonathan Heisler and Ethan Fernandez drove in the Rx-ers’ remaining runs, while Simon Mueller and Sammy Voit chipped in on the mound along with Deener and Fernandez.

Martinez scored on an RBI single by John Abreu, and Samuel Bergman drove in the Rebels’ final run in the top of the third. The Animals tacked on in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Miguel Nunez’s two-run single. Animals pitchers Farber and Rodriguez combined for five strikeouts and allowed only six baserunners.

The Animals earned the win Saturday at Seton Park with timely hitting, smart base running, and good pitching. They tallied five runs in the bottom of the first. Kenneth Rodriguez walked, stole second, and scored on an error. Then Zack Farber doubled and was knocked in on a Brian Alberts triple, and Kristian Ragland and Lucas Ludgate drove in runs with RBI singles. Saturday was a great day for Ethan Rosa, as he went 4-for-4 to carry the Mets to victory in six innings at Sid Field. He doubled in the fourth, tripled in the first, second, and fifth innings and drove in six runs. An RBI double by Sam Cantrall and an error during the first inning, and an RBI singles by Seven Alemais, Ryan Cauldfield and Cantrall, and a two-run triple by Rosa in the second inning supplied the early offense for the Mets. Cantrall had a dominant, 11-strikeout performance, allowing two earned runs, two hits and no walks in four innings.

CMSV freshman is softball pitcher of the year By Chris Mascaro College of Mount Saint Vincent freshman Mackenzie Heizer, who pitched a no-hitter in her first collegiate start in March, capped her rookie season by being named Skyline Conference pitcher of the year last Tuesday. Heizer went 10-2 with a 2.03 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings for the Dolphins, who won a program record 28 games. CMSV also finished with a winning record (28-7, 9-5 Skyline) for the first time since 2009 and earned the first postseason win in program histor y — a 3-1 win over top-seeded Sage Colleges in the first round of the Skyline tournament. Dolphins coach Mark Roldan was named the conference’s coach of the year. Pitcher/infielder Kathleen Davis joined Heizer as a first-team allconference selection, while freshman infielder Brittany Lee and outfielder Danielle Maffei were picked to the second team. Heizer had four shutouts, including two no-hitters, and held opponents to a league-best .196 average against her. She also hit .369 with five homers and 27 RBIs.

MACKENZIE HEIZER Davis went 11-5 with a 1.98 ERA in 17 starts, Lee hit .387 with six homers and 18 RBIs and Maffei batted .413 with a team-leading eight homers and 34 RBIs.

Besides a successful longterm stint with Weight Watchers, when I lost 36 pound in my 20s, and my recent success with the Dukan Diet, with a loss of 28 pounds, being a chef has meant tasting food throughout the day and therefore never being truly hungry except for ravenous cravings around 4 or 11 p.m. This has led to a sluggish metabolism coupled with an irregular eating schedule and propensity towards overeating, dehydration and drinking a fair amount of calories on evenings out with friends. But I’m just one type. There are plenty of moms and dads that keep unhealthy snack foods around the house for kids and then spend the day (or weekend) noshing on treats. Others skip breakfast and lunch in favor of a large dinner, ignoring how this kind of starvation leads to lows and spikes in the body’s blood sugar levels. If you’re doing something and it’s not working for you, then it might be time to think of other options — or ask how diligently you’ve been following your current regimen.

Diets work, we don’t What I realized recently is that most diets really work. It’s the people that do them that don’t work. For example, if your diet tells you no sugar and no flour, you can’t be good all day, eating your lean proteins and steamed veggies, and expect that a late night cupcake isn’t going to derail the process. My newer diet allows me to eat unlimited quantities from a list of 100 foods. I was seeing significant weight loss in a very short period of time given the reduced amount of sugar and fat in my daily diet. Sticking to it on vacation hasn’t been hard with all the fresh options available at local restaurants. The mojitos, on the other hand, have been a killer. Given my lack of commitment not to

drink in all those extra calories, some of the weight has come back on. I didn’t follow the rules.

Stay committed When you cheat or go off the diet for a day, you might see a four-pound weight change the following day. There might be some incredulous explosion of horror where you say, “Well, this diet sucks. It’s a fad. I quit.” The truth is, if the commitment to the rules of the diet are not there, then neither are the results. It’s an awful cycle to feel depressed or uncomfortable about your weight when all the people around you, including you, want what’s good. I don’t speak for all, but feeling good on the inside and outside are very much linked, and they come from you alone. When you make good, positive choices for yourself and seeing results, it feels very powerful. As a layperson committed to my own health and that of others, I’d like to offer some commonplace suggestions. Please remember that I am not a doctor nor a nutritionist and suggest speaking with both types of professionals prior to starting a major diet or exercise regimen. Remember that food can be incredibly restorative and that just a few small changes in diet can have dramatic beneficial effects on your overall health.

A chef ’s tips Danielle’s tips to eating better: Omit fast food: Your body doesn’t need it. Not matter how rushed you are for lunch, make a better choice. Kill the unhealthy salty snacks: Pretzels, chips and large handfuls of salty nuts have an addictive quality. They say “once you pop, you can’t stop” for a reason. Companies know people are addicted to salty foods that crunch, and take advantage of that. Try keeping them out of the house for good. Instead, try raw nuts and limit them to 10 to 15 per snack.

Reduce drinking: Try reducing alcohol intake either altogether or to one glass of wine once or twice per week. Not only is alcohol a depressant that can bring your whole attitude towards yourself down after a night of drinking, it also stimulates the appetite, adds empty sugary calories, dehydrates and reduces your ability to make good choices. Increase greens; decrease sugar and starch: Get committed to a diet richer in leafy greens and non-starchy vegetables. Darky, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables are powerful sources of vitamins. Add protein: Lean proteins like fish, beef, turkey, eggs and chicken create short- and longterm satiety far longer than a bowl of pasta. By eating a diet rich in lean protein and greens, you’ll feel fuller longer. Find the right diet: Get online, talk to friends, hit the bookstore. Start researching and get prepared and excited about a commitment to yourself. If quantity is an issue for you, choose a diet that allows you unlimited quantities of certain kinds of foods. You might have to omit some of your favorites, but at least you won’t have to eat a measly 500 calories a day — something hardly anyone can or should be doing. Increase water: Drink the recommended six to eight glasses of water per day. Water flushes, hydrates and helps the body rid itself of toxins. Following these tips will have a great impact on your health! HELP LOCAL TEENS: The Kingsbridge Heights Community Center is looking for volunteers for its teen programs. The center is at 3101 Kingsbridge Terrace. If you have any special talents, especially in art or dance, that you would like to share with the group’s youngsters, become a part of the center. A little time spent there in the evenings can help make a difference in the community. For more information, call 718884-0700 ext. 158.
