Bronx Opera puts on striking show

ompanies that stage Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, one of the most performed operas in the world, face an important choice for act two, scene two of the show: To slap, or not to slap? The matter arises during one of the most dramatic moments in the score, when the lead tenor role prompts the chorus’ — and his father’s — rage by disrespectfully tossing a wad of cash at the feet of courtesan Violetta Valéry. For the Bronx Opera Company’s upcoming performance of the Italian classic, director Rod Gomez decided to have the father administer a forceful, open-handed blow to the left cheek of his impudent son as an indignant song by the chorus finishes. While the slap is not actually in Verdi’s score, directors have felt free to include or forego the gesture over the years. Mr. Gomez instructed tenor David Guzman, who will play the son on Friday, May 9 at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theater, on the scene during notes at an April 25 rehearsal.
“It’s not A History of Violence,” Mr. Gomez said. “He’s your father — and he’s slapped you! When you come and he stops you, struggle has to happen.” The back-story, as opera lovers know, is that the respectable young bourgeois Alfredo Guzmant has fallen for a famous courtesan. Several arias later, they are living together outside of Paris, but then social mores in the form of M. Guzmant’s father Giorgio tell Mlle. Valéry to end the relationship. She reluctantly goes along with the command, but due to a miscommunication at a party, Alfredo delivers the insult which, Mr. Gomez thinks, would have drawn a slap from Giorgio. Between songs at the recent rehearsal, several performers shared how the scene plays out from their points of view. “Right before the slap part, he’s just thrown the money,” said baritone Andrew Oakden, who plays the father. “That’s when everything explodes. The whole chorus starts going off on him. This huge frenzy keeps building and building and building, and then it’s just dead silence.” “I am calling everybody to let them know I’m paying her,” Mr. Guzman
said of his character Alfredo’s actions. “Which is so horrible for me to experience, because I know that what we had is actually real,” interjected soprano Jennifer Moore, who plays the courtesan. In the Bronx Opera Company’s staging, Ms. Moore’s character forlornly kneels at the front of the stage while the chorus of partygoers apparently takes her side, singing, “Depart at once and leave this house” to hotheaded Alfredo. (Since its inception, the company has sung only in English in order to make their performances as accessible as possible.) During the last chord the chorus sings — a tense diminished seventh — father Germont administers the corporal punishment. “The slap happens right here,” said Mr. Oakden. “Then I break the silence with, ‘No man of honor insults a woman.’ It turns into this short, really just super, super tense scene.” A pregnant pause comes right after the slap and before Giorgio Germont launches into a more melodious admonition — one of many elements which the singers said evidence Verdi’s mastery of his chosen genre.
“The spaces, the beats — they’re so specifically written in by Verdi, they’re so powerful,” Mr. Oakden remarked. Conductor Michael Spierman said that by the time of the pause before the father’s aria begins, the music and the action have attained a tension begging for release. “The diminished seventh chord says to the listener, pay attention to what’s coming, because it’s important,” Mr. Spierman said. “Then when the father says what he has to say, the diminished seventh has done its purpose.” All slapping aside, the singers said they feel the opera is still relevant today, more 153 years after its premier in Venice. Mr. Guzman, Ms. Moore and Mr. Oakden agreed that a relationship between a member of the middle class like Alfredo Guzmant and a prostitute like Violetta Valéry would still scandalize their friends and family — at least the former’s relations — today. “The story is so universal, if you put this story in 2014, it works,” said Mr. Guzman. Ms. Moore said in the world of La Traviata, the male characters predom-
inate. “The men really have all the power, and I think deliberately so in the way this opera is written and conceived,” the soprano said. “That’s one of the main points we want to make. [Violetta] is really a victim of fate, of this society that won’t let her repent from her past actions.” The post-slap portions of La Traviata maintain the high emotional pitch Verdi is known for in all of his works. Mr. Spierman said performing the opera in English fully opens it up to an American audience. He added that the last time he conducted La Traviata for his company, over a decade ago, a woman came backstage to tell him she had been going to the opera and crying to it for over 50 years. “Tonight was the first time I really knew what I was crying about,” she told him. La Traviata will be at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theater on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 10 at the same time. Tickets cost from $15 to $30, with $5 discounts for seniors and students.

Sports Horace Mann breaks .500 after close game By Chris Mascaro firstname.lastname@example.org Seeking its first win at Fieldston, the Horace Mann boys lacrosse team’s senior class, namely captain Paul Tetenbaum, didn’t want the team playing “hero ball” — trying to do too much individually, shooting when the best option is a pass or freelancing on offense. Ian Mason didn’t heed Tetenbaum’s advice, even though the junior attack’s “hero play” came while performing lacrosse’s most selfless act — killing a penalty. After Horace Mann was whistled for a 2:00 non-releasable penalty midway through the fourth quarter, Mason took a pass off a clear and beat the goalie to the lower corner to squash a Fieldston rally. Tetenbaum, a four-year starter, added a late goal and the Lions earned a 13-10 win on a blustery day at its nearby rivals’ turf field on April 23. Horace Mann had lost seven in a row to Fieldston dating back to 2010. “To see [Mason] beat a couple guys, it just got us all pumped up,” Tetenbaum said. “And you could see that they lost a little bit of hope. It killed their momentum.” Momentum, for once, is on Horace Mann’s side. After alternating wins and losses to start the season, the Lions (5-4, 4-4) moved above .500 for the first time since this year’s senior class won its first game as freshmen. They then cruised to an 18-3 win at Dalton on Friday before suffering an 11-10 loss against Trinity on Monday. “We’ve been taking our lumps, so this win was a big confidence builder for us,” said coach Gregg Quilty, who’s in his 21st season with the team. “We’re not battling for the basement in the league anymore. But we don’t want to be satisfied with that. Hopefully
we’ll build on that and improve.” Added Tetenbaum, who’ll play at Franklin and Marshall College next year: “This was such a meaningful win. We hadn’t beaten these guys in a while, it was time to.” Junior Colin Shea had four goals and two assists, senior Ben Fox scored four goals and sophomore Austin Sanders added five assists. Defenseman Andy Dickerman, who Quilty called “our most outstanding player, by far,” had a goal and two assists. “I thought we had this killer instinct that we were looking for all year,” said Fox, who’s committed to play at Williams College next year. “We weren’t laid back as we’ve been in some games and had to spend the rest of the game trying to dig back.” Despite the loss, Fieldston (6-3, 5-2) remains one of the upper echelon teams in the Ivy Preparatory League. They bounced back from the loss with a 10-5 win at Trinity on Friday and a 17-9 non-league win over Portledge on Monday. “We definitely haven’t hit our peak yet,” coach Keith Bergin, who started the program 15 years ago, said after the Horace Mann game. “We’ve been riddled with injuries and we’ve lost about four or five starters due to strep throat and bronchitis.” Junior attack Chris White had a goal and four assists against the Lions, while Jack Pearlman, Dane Gordon and Connor Stephens each scored two goals. Fieldston was scheduled to play at Hackley on Wednesday and will play host to Riverdale at 4 p.m. on Saturday, while Horace Mann was scheduled to play a non-conference game against The Masters School on Wednesday and will play host to Poly Prep at 4 p.m. on Friday. The two teams will meet again May 10 at Horace Mann.

Tourney loss has Dolphins thinking about next year By Kaitlin McCormack email@example.com
Mets: 11 Tigers: 4
Every season must come to an end at some point. For the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s lacrosse team, the end came last Wednesday. After a bumpy season, the Dolphins entered the Skyline Conference tournament as the No. 4 seed, and they matched up against top-seeded Farmingdale State. CMSV played its hardest, but could not keep up with the reigning conference champions, losing to the Rams 18-0. But they walked off the field with their heads held high. This was the first time in three years CMSV has made the playoffs. Despite being shutout, the Dolphins never gave up the fight. The defensive line held strong against the constant attack, as CMSV held Farmingdale to no goals for nearly 13 minutes in the first half. The Dolphins also managed to prevent the Rams from scoring again for the last 18 minutes of the game. Even though the defense stopped Farmingdale (17-1) from scoring for long stretches, the Dolphins could not get a shot in or win a draw control. It is sad to see the season end, especially when so many key players will not be returning next year. The seniors will be missed next season, as both players and friends. On Thursday, seniors Laura Carr and and Colleen Walsh were named second-team all conference. Carr finished with nine goals and a team-high 11 assists, with 46 ground balls, while Walsh caused 26 turnovers to make the team for the fourth straight year. Farmingdale went on to play St. Joseph’s (L.I.) on Saturday in the championship game. They won the title with a 9-8 victory, — their 12th in a row. The Dolphins, who finished the season 5-9 and 3-4 in the conference, are ready to work next year towards another bid to playoffs. Now that they have made it, the team is eager to return to the postseason and make up for this season’s loss. Kaitlin McCormack is the starting goalie for the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s lacrosse team.
Seven runs in the first three innings allowed the Mets to put the game away early on Sunday at Kelly #1. Ethan Rosa hit a three-run double and Aiden Gaughan had an RBI single. Rosa had three hits and four RBIs, while Ethan Terrero earned the win after allowing two runs in two innings with four strikeouts.
TEEN CENTER: The Riverdale Community Center at MS/HS 141, 660 W. 237th St., offers a Friday night teen center from 7 to 10 p.m. The free program is open to youths of the community ages 11 to 16. Excellent supervision is provided, along with games and many activities in the large gym. Call 718-796-4724 for more information.

Saturday SRLL West Chelsea Veterinary Hospital Animals: 10 NRBL Pro Patria K of C Post 751 Yankees: 1 The Animals notched two victories this week due to strong pitching, timely hitting, and great base running. In their game against the Slicers, the Animals jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Kenneth Rodriguez walked and scored on a single by Jonathan Katzman, Zack Farber walked and scored on Brian Alberts’ RBI groundout and Kristian Ragland singled and scored on an RBI single by Lucas Ludgate. After Asher RadunsSilverstein singled, Rory Naughton hit a big double to knock in the fourth and fifth runs of the inning. The Slicers got a run back in the bottom of the first when Pete Winarksi reached on an error and scored after Ari Wigder reached on an error. Game two against the Yankees featured a balance offensive attack from the Animals. Miguel Nunez and Ben Saer scored on big hits from Ethan Havens and Robert Peralta. Good defense from Naughton and Seamus Henry thwarted a few Yankee rallies. Animals pitchers Farber and Katzman tallied 11 strikeouts.
SRLL Salvatore’s at Soho Slicers: 13 Romy Enterprises Rebels: 3 Powered by big hits by Gianni Chiovetta, Chris Yarina, Noah Gordon, and Ari Wigder, the Slicers offense scored early and often on Saturday despite the best efforts of Rebel pitchers Josh Kenny, Tristan Martinez, and Nathan Haimowitz. Excellent pitching by Griffin O’Keefe, who struck out 10, sealed the deal for the Slicers, who evened their record at 3-3.
Pee Wee Division The Dale-Way Auto Sluggers lived up to their name in the third game of the season against the Liebman’s Deli Dogs on Saturday. Oscar Shapiro and August Grimstad both went 3-for-3, while Bella Lombardi and Jonah Sandow went 2-for-3. Theo Sandow, Luca Long, Ethan Harvey and Toby Poole each hit solid ground balls down the third-base line, and Jacob Siper, in addition to hitting two line shots into left field, made some dazzling plays in the infield. It was another strong performance from this talented, rapidly improving team.
Minor League Softball Division Kiwanis Kubs: 6 Blue Bay Blue Jays: 3 This was the first game for the inaugural SRLL Minor League softball season. The game on Saturday
at Seton Park was scoreless until the Kubs’ Isabel Morrow connected for an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the fifth but failed to score. The bottom of the fifth saw Morrow add a grand slam inside-the-park homer, and she finished 3-for-3. The Blue Jays put together a great rally of their own in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs and once again loading the bases. But the Kubs’ infield made some nice defensive plays to thwart the rally.
North Riverdale Mets: 4 Yankees: 1 Sam Cantrall was strong at the plate and on the mound on Tuesday at Kelly #1. He went 1-for-2, with a home run and two runs, and he allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out eight in three innings. Aaron Portes got the win for the Mets after pitching two shutout innings. He struck out four, walked two and gave up no hits, and also hit a three-run single. Liam struck out 10 for the Yankees.
