uick: how many painters from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics can you name?
If you had the same kind of American education as the author of this article, your answer is probably zero. A small yet sublime show at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale provides a delightful introduction to not-quitehousehold names, from Armenia’s Aram Kupetsian to Ukraine’s Igor Popov along with a range of Russian renegades including Vladimir Gavrilov, Pavel Kuznetsov and Peter Shlikov. The story behind the landscape paintings acquired by the former executive director of the Hebrew Home, which strongly integrates the fine arts into programs for its elderly residents,
adds poignancy to the beautiful works. As assistant curator Emily O’Learly explained, the decade-long cultural “thaw” following Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin’s death in 1953 saw freer modernist styles replace the humorless propaganda the autocrat had demanded in all of the arts. Years of cultural isolation from the world outside the U.S.S.R.’s borders created a delayed reaction to the Impressionist movement in particular. Mr. Shlikov’s 1962 Ararat Plain, which could almost be mistaken for a landscape by Cézanne, is one example. The Russian Jewish painter’s blurred strokes and meditative approach evoke the French master’s iconic 1887 Mont Saint-Victoire, which has a highly similar composition. Likewise, Mr. Gavrilov’s 1963 Uglich, The Church of Iowan looks like something Monet would have painted if he ever could have pulled himself away from Notre-Dame Cathedral and
other French views. But as much fun as it is to guess the influences behind the works at the Hebrew Home’s exhibit, the game does not do justice to the artists’ achievements. Ararat Plain is one of several paintings at the show where the Caucasian country serves as canvas for the Soviet painters. Ms. O’Leary said because artistic restrictions lingered during the thaw, which ended with Nikita Kruschev’s 1964 fall from power, painters had to search for freedom away from Moscow. She explained that they found it in places like Armenia and Ukraine, where they could justify their use of bright colors and experimental techniques by saying that it reflected the indigenous cultures — lip service to imperialist prejudices at its finest. Ararat Plain, whose subject was part of Armenia centuries before the U.S.S.R. invaded the country, is full of pleasing contrasts. Mr. Shlikov painted
plant life in the foreground with vibrant oranges and reds, while Mount Ararat itself towers in noble shades of purple and blue in the background. The slope of the mountain and the tall linearity of some trees lend a syncopated rhythm to the piece. Mr. Popov’s Kizhi, The Cathedral takes an unusual slant on a well-known monument. The artist keeps much of the structure out of view and lets strange lighting play along the church’s slats and onion-shaped domes. High above, billowing clouds evoke memories of an Orthodox God in the far reaches of an officially atheist land. Mr. Kuznetsov’s Evening Landscape seems to take us back to the Russian heartland. His deep greens and browns create a subdued atmosphere in an empty forest. But it is also easy to imagine a hunting party from War and Peace shattering the stillness as it clamors across the hilly scene. The Hebrew Home’s former Execu-
tive Director Jacob Reingold acquired all 14 of the paintings in the current show from London’s Grosvenor Gallery, which a brochure described as a onetime top venue for eastern European artists to show their work in the west. The exhibit represents an ongoing effort to educate people about major Soviet painters. About a year ago, the Hebrew Home showed Soviet painters’ depictions of urban life in Under the Iron Curtain: Modern Art From the Soviet Bloc. Who knows? As New York City’s biggest museums exhaust the possibilities of exhibiting famous Impressionist painters, maybe Soviet artists featured in the Hebrew Home’s massive collection will start to get wider play. The Politics of Paint: Landscape Painting in the Soviet Union, 1953-1964 runs at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale until April 20. Admission is free to the public daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Crowds throng to expanded Garden Gourmet Don’t be surprised if you bump into a friend when you’re shopping at the newly expanded Garden Gourmet at 5665 Broadway, near West 234th Street. Everyone, it seems, has discovered the store and taken it to heart. The owner, Andy Zoitas, isn’t surprised. He has made a career out of making his customers happy. “The other day,” he said in a recent interview, “a woman came to me and asked for Blueprint Juices. We got them for her and even though I was shocked at the price — $9.99 a bottle — she bought 20 of them and walked out with a wide smile on her face.” Another customer told him she had seen a particular green tea mentioned by Dr. Oz, the TV health evangelist. She was amazed, but pleased, to see it on the shelves on her next visit. Mr. Zoitas relishes acquiring hard-tofind items, whether it is a rare midwestern stout among his 900 different craft beers, organic kale chips or any one of 1,000 cheeses from around the world. “If you don’t see it, just ask,” he says, “I’ll get it for you.” In order to achieve that goal, he deals with more than 500 vendors each week, from sellers with just one item to giant companies with hundreds of items. The store has so many ethnic specialties — from countries like Russia, Poland, Hungary, Israel, Italy or Mexico — that it could be an outpost for the United Nations. Organics are essential today, he pointed out as he made his rounds through the store. Not just fruits and vegetables, but organic meats and prepared foods are available, too. “People have less time to cook today,” Mr. Zoitas said, “so we offer all kinds of hot and cold prepared foods, from simple sandwiches to complete meals. “Basically, we’re trying to offer onestop shopping for all of the best foods in the marketplace.” Groceries aren’t just a job for Mr. Zoitas — they’re a calling. He got his start in the business when he was just 12 years old, as a delivery boy for a familyowned grocery on the upper West Side. “Speaking of delivery,” he says, “we just started offering free delivery to all our local customers when they spend $75 or more.”
Contemporary meets classic on ‘Gold Coast’ According to the new sponsors at the Riveredge, a luxury co-op at 2575
cost, Mr. Bookman emphasized. “Most importantly, every residence will have unspoiled panoramic vistas of the river, from Manhattan to Westchester.” “Riveredge itself greatly enhances the value our buyers will receive,” added Randi Kahn. “It is one of — if not the most — desirable addresses in Riverdale. In addition to stately grace, it offers a full range of refinements and services. They include a doorman/ concierge, swimming pool, a fitness center, private storage space and a private garage.” “We not only make the living easy, but the buying experience, too,” Ms Kahn continued. “Since these are sponsor-owned residences, there is no Board approval process. Further, we’ve put together attractive financing packages that will make it easy to qualify and to own for less than rent.” Two furnished models are now open on site. They’re shown by appointment only on weekends. Call George Welch at 917-626-5552 for an appointment or additional details.

CHEESES from around the world draw customers to Garden Gourmet.
Tri State Marble’s big open house For the last six years, Tri State Marble & Tile, at 49-53 Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers, has offered a wide variety of cabinets, tiles, and renovation services. What’s the key to their success? “We take care of our customers,” Luis Rubio, the store manager, says. Lot’s of kitchen designers say the same, but Tri State has the inventory to back up the claim, with a wide variety of marble, granite, limestone, icestone, corian, granite tiles and ceramic tiles. A knowledgable staff offering expert customer service is important, too. Working alongside Mr. Rubio are Sales/Design Consultants Regiane Souza and Ivette Dominguez, who have been busy gearing up for an open house at the store on Thursday April 24, where they will showcase their renovated showroom, a new line of tiles as well as the latest kitchen and bathroom cabinetry. For more information about the Open House or their services, call (914) 377-1100. TRI STATE MARBLE is staging an open house on April 24. Palisade Avenue, topping the “musthave” list of today’s discerning home buyers are three things: the new, a prime location and affordability. Wellestablished, fully-developed neighborhoods such as Riverdale are illequipped to meet these criteria. Land is scarce and, if found, in marginal locations. Further, today’s construction costs make prices prohibitive, they say. The inventive and veteran Riverdale development team — Randi Kahn and Jeff Bookman — say they’ve found a way out of this quandary. They’ve acquired 35 sponsor-owned apartments in Riveredge, a Riverdale landmark, which they’re turning into 35 all-new,
state-of-the-art, riverview cooperatives, ranging in price from $199,000 to $999,000. “The residences we’re offering,” stated Mr. Bookman, “are new from their entrances to their terraces. They have new layouts, new dimensions, new flooring, and new amenities, including designer kitchens, designer bathrooms and private terraces.” “The focus,” Mr. Bookman added, “ has been on space, space, space. The homes will contain between 500 sq. ft. and 2,000 sq. ft., some 20 percent larger than the average Riverdale cooperative.” Additionally, buyers will be able to customize their homes at no added
Parkinson’s sufferers learn joy of dance at Mount By Kaitlin McCormack email@example.com As a College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) dance class for people with Parkinson’s disease, their friends and family members drew to a close, participants joined hands in a circle with a leader in the middle. “The circle we do at the end is a circle of joy,” said participant Janet Stram. “It’s just beautiful. We pass on something good.” Since the CMSV class began last month, attendees have moved and stretched to music ranging from ballet to jazz and flamenco. One morning every other week, the Peter J. Sharp Center Dance Studio starts the group off with the participants sitting in a circle and instructors Tara Sherman and Roberto Villanueva in the center. The teachers guide the class through arm and legs stretches that involve simple, fluid motions. The emphasis is on being comfortable. If a movement hurts or is uncomfortable, the dancers are encouraged to switch things up. “It’s about having fun and being creative,” Ms. Sherman said to her class as they danced. “There is no right or wrong way.” “I love it. It’s a great, great class,” said Arlene Scorzelli. “It’s the best stretch class I go to.” The program originated in Brooklyn in 2001. Olie Westheimer, the founder and director of the Brooklyn Parkinson’s Group, approached the Mark Morris Dance Group with the idea of creating the program that became known as Dance for PD. It has since spread through all five boroughs, with organizers approaching CMSV and the Riverdale Y to host sessions. Many CMSV students have come to the classes to help out. Sophomore Emily Petrillo was attracted to the program because her grandfather has Parkinson’s. “Learning that there is a way for people with PD to express themselves and make themselves feel better is hopeful,” said Ms. Petrillo, who takes what she learns in the classes back to her grandfather. To register for a Dance for PD class, go to www.dancceforpd.org or call 800957-1046. The next class at CMSV will be on Thursday, April 17.

Riverdale swings into Little League season By Ken Katzman firstname.lastname@example.org
pring and baseball finally came back to Riverdale with the annual Little League parade on Saturday morning. The parade, a tradition that dates back a few decades, kicked off at Kelly Field on Broadway. North Riverdale Baseball League (NRBL) has been running the parade for years. It invited the South Riverdale Little League (SRLL) to join a few years ago. Both leagues have been working closely together ever since, sometimes even combining teams from each league in a specific division. “It’s really great to see the entire Riverdale community come together for this event,” said SRLL president Michael Farber. “We really thank NRBL for sharing the parade with us.” As parents and children gathered at Kelly Field, coaches were busy meeting players for the first time. Christine Card, coach of the T-ball NRBL Angels, had a unique perspective as she handed out uniforms. “I played in this league my entire childhood,” she said. “And it was my grandmother who actually started girls’ softball.” Eight months pregnant, Christine is excited that she will soon have two of her own kids in the league. Amid the crush of people, SRLL coach Nick Marinacci held up a sign with the names of the two teams he will be coaching this year, Ben’s Market Cutters and the Highlanders. “It’s the first time I’ll meet the players and parents on my two teams,” he said. One of those players, Michael Pineda, had played in another league in the Bronx and had been “begging to play again after two years of not playing.” He was very excited to meet his new coach and some of his teammates. Gerry Woods, one of the NRBL commissioners and a key planner of the parade, was excited about the balloons, fire trucks and police escort. “We have a great relationship with the 50th Precinct,” he said. “And this year we even got some tunes — you know, the tunes the kids want to hear.” Samantha O’Connell, a NRBL softball player, enjoyed walking the parade route. “I like marching in the parade,” she said. “It’s fun. I like seeing all the people.” Her dad, Eddie, was happy to see good weather. “It’s great seeing all the kids march together,” he said. The parade route ended at Sid Field, which was re-opened last year after a long-term upgrade project. Joining the festivities were many of the community’s elected officials, including Councilman Andrew Cohen, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, state Senator Jeff Klein and Rep. Elliot Engel. Bob Mancision of NRBL, who has helped run the parade for years, summed up the day with a favorite story of his. A few years ago, a woman came up to him and thanked him for making the parade happen year after year. “It’s the one day the Bronx turns into a small town,” she said. As this year’s parade clearly demonstrated, all of Riverdale was ready for spring and baseball once again. Ken Katzman is a vice president of the South Riverdale Little League.

Pulled chicken tacos, skate stew are great spring repasts By Danielle Rehfeld email@example.com This winter was long, cold and snowy. I went into total hibernation mode, getting cozy at home and cooking long-simmering soups, sauces and chilis. What’s awesome is putting a one-pot meal on the burner and walking away. Nourishing home cooking + accomplishing little tasks at home = one fulfilled Riverdale girl. However, as the weather begins to warm, lighter foods that’ll do anything but stick to your bones are totally possible with little work or clean up. Here are two examples I’ve been cooking up this week. I like to use flavorful, bright, store-bought salsas and Latin cooking bases to make an otherwise bland piece of chicken awfully tasty. Pulled chicken tacos and skate stew are what’s on the menu this week. While I love the tender, sweet flavor of skate, you can also use fish like grouper, cod or monkfish. With this chicken dish, dark meat rules the roost, but you can totally pull off a great meal by cooking boneless, skinless chicken breasts in a slow cooker. Enjoy, from my kitchen to yours!
Place the pico de gallo and fish in a medium pot. If the pico is very liquid, do not add water. If the pico is chunky, add three quarters of a cup of water. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover tightly and cook for 40 minutes on low. Taste for seasoning and serve immediately with torn cilantro leaves.
chicken: Cook eight to 10 breasts in a slow cooker with a jar of salsa verde (no water needed) for six to eight hours on low. Pull apart with a fork and season with salt and pepper. **Pico de gallo is a popular Mexican salsa cruda made of fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapenos, salt and lime juice. It can be purchased premade in many supermarkets, Latin groceries or stores that sell fresh, ready-made foods.
Cook’s Notes: *Slow cooker white meat

Breakfast in bed for special days On special occasions, treating a loved one to breakfast in bed can get their big day off on the right foot. The success of such an endeavor often boils down to following a few tips. • The surprise of breakfast in bed is almost as important as the presentation. Make sure everyone keeps the secret and rises early enough to prepare the meal. • Banging and clanking in the kitchen does not a relaxing morning make, so select an easily prepared dish to cut back on the noise. • Adult supervision is a must when young kids are cooking. This ensures everything goes safely and smoothly. • Delegate some tasks to kids. A young child may be able to arrange flowers in a vase, while a slightly older child may be more adept at slicing toast or helping to flip pancakes. • Choose easy-to-eat foods. Crumbly and messy foods are not the ideal fit for breakfast in bed. No one wants to spill food onto pillows or go to bed the next evening to find a pile of crumbs beneath the sheets.

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Place the thighs in a dutch oven. Add salsa or cooking base and one cup of water. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cover with cilantro stems, bring to a boil, cover and place in oven. Cook for three hours. Remove from oven. Discard stems. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Use a fork to gently pull the meat apart. Turn four burners on medium heat. Using a pair of tongs, toast the tortillas right over the burners for about 10 to 15 seconds on each side until toasty. Repeat with the remaining tortillas. Serve chicken with broth in individual bowls garnished with fresh cilantro and two tacos.
