CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT, a blue sphere projects the reach of the first radio transmissions from the Earth, with small blue spheres marking some of the stars known to have planets; Jupiter and some of its moons’ orbits; Marc Taylor, manager of the Andrus Planetarium, at the console of the facility’s renovated computer system; the zodiac signs Virgo, Leo and Cancer; and our solar system featuring many planets’ and dwarf planets’ orbits.

Andrus Planetarium reopens with a big bang nside the revamped Andrus Planetarium at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, the universe is opened up with just a few clicks of a mouse on a high-tech computer system. With the proper training, a curator can bring as many as 120 attendants flying through the galaxy, getting so close to planets, stars and constellations in awe-inspiring detail that one may forget their feet are still firmly planted on Earth. But the planetarium was not always equipped with modern equipment that can fire up different views of the universe without a hitch, as Planetarium and Science Programs Manager Marc Taylor explained. In fact, the planetarium reopened its doors to the public on March 8 after receiving a complete technological makeover starting last May. “Before a show, sometimes something wouldn’t work right and you’d have to reach in with your finger and turn a piece because it would get stuck,” Taylor said, speaking about the planetarium before construction. “Or we’d oil it and hope the oil wouldn’t drip and hit the bulbs underneath and burst into flames.”

The reconstruction was a delicate operation. Fewer than a handful of companies in the world can repair a planetarium’s delicate equipment. “It’s not like you can go to Best Buy and get a bunch of pieces and stick them together,” Taylor said. The new star projectors are bright with a high resolution, Taylor explained. They are similar to what movie theaters are equipped with, but pack four times the resolution of a Blu-ray DVD. Astronomers have been able to pinpoint other galaxies aside from our own as technology has advanced, Taylor said. Exhibit visitors can be brought on an intergalactic tour that is only possible from within the planetarium, all without leaving their seats. With the upgraded system, Taylor said planetarium curators can program their own scripts into the computer according to what planets, stars and galaxies they would like to show to an audience. Being able to save scripts makes it easier to train curators to use the system and enables them to present a show verbally while displaying the solar system at the same time. “The Sky Tonight,” which runs on weekends, is the planetarium’s premier show, drawing full crowds since its

March opening date. According to Jennifer Patton, director of education at the museum, it is “a live show.” As Patton explains it, a live show spans 45 minutes and is steered by the attendees who tell the curator what they want to see. Though a visitor would still pick up a lot of fascinating information from something preprogrammed, a live show provides a hands-on experience. “It’s interactive with the audience and you get to learn so much in a short amount of time,” Patton said. “It’s not just sitting down and listening.” The outside of the planetarium also has exhibits to see. A piece of an old star projector is on display along with Milky Way wall art that was put together by high school students during weekends, Taylor said. Color-coded pieces of fabric that represent different natural occurrences in the Milky Way — like new stars and heated nitrogen — were placed on the wall to create the display. “We wanted [the planetarium] to have a historic element because this is a historic museum,” Taylor said. Planetarium star shows run every weekend, with various exhibits for children and adults to enjoy.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, April 3, 2014 - B5

Home of the week Fred Levy I Halstead Property

A three-bedroom condo for the modern age

t’s called a boutique condo, with just 24 spacious units in the entire building. The developers of 3816 Waldo Avenue took a unique approach to their cliffside site in central Riverdale. They gave every apartment plenty of space, light and air, but they didn’t stop there, adding every possible amenity and high tech convenience. Apartment 2A is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit that boasts central air conditioning, a video intercom system, pre-wiring for cable TV, high-speed internet and multiple phone lines. Add to that a private terrace, an in-home washer and dryer, a large private storage room, an indoor parking spot, a ďŹ tness center, a library and a recreation room for parties and special

events and you’re in the lap of luxury. The kitchen carries out the luxury theme with top-of-the-line GE stainless steel appliances, Carrara marble countertops and backsplash, custom wall covers, reďŹ nished cabinets and upgraded pulls, faucet and sink. The en suite master bathroom features a separate glass-enclosed shower and a whirlpool tub. The No. 1 subway is nearby, and express buses to Manhattan and rail link shuttle buses to Metro-North are a block away. According to Fred Levy of Halstead Property, the condominium is “priced to sellâ€? at $599,000, including indoor parking and a large private storage unit. Monthly common charges are $950 and taxes are $14.24 per month. The property has a 25 year tax abatement.

Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to

Clockwise from top: An archway separates living and dining areas. The spotless kitchen features Carrara marble. The kitchen is open to the dining area.

A luxurious master bath offers a glass-enclosed shower and a separate whirlpool tub. The study is comfortably conďŹ gured for three.

What’s cooking?

Turkey burgers among many tempting make-ahead meals When people ask me for weight loss tips or how to stay healthy while living such a busy life, I always recommend two things: Cook your own food and be prepared. You don’t have to do it every night, but when you take a few hours to get in the kitchen with a game plan in mind, you can truly accomplish a lot. Take three hours a week, and you can get a soup and chili on the stove, and while that simmers away, prep a few salads, marinate some chicken you can grill later in the week and prepare a healthy chicken or turkey burger like the recipe below. I like to prepare the patties in advance, wrap them individually and then toss them in the freezer. As needed, pull them out 24 hours in advance or, if you make the patties thin enough, you can grill them in their frozen state. MEDITERRANEAN TURKEY BURGERS Makes 4-6 ser vings 2 lbs. ground turkey, white meat 1 small-medium yellow onion, grated (about ½ cup) 2 cups cilantro leaves, rinsed, dried and chopped (1/2 cup chopped) 2 cups parsley leaves, rinsed, dried and chopped (1/2 cup chopped) 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 extra large egg ½ cup dr y, seasoned breadcrumbs 1 ½ tsp. Kosher salt, plus more for seasoning ¾ tsp. freshly ground black pepper ¾ tsp. Aleppo pepper ¼ tsp. turmeric powder ¼ tsp. ground cumin 1 pinch ground cinnamon Canola Oil, for brushing

greens lightly dressed with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Cook’s note: This is a great make-ahead recipe. To freeze, wrap the burgers individually in plastic wrap and defrost as needed in the refrigerator 24 hours in advance. I like to serve these flavorful burgers without the buns and garnish, if desired, with garlic yogurt sauce, tahini or a salsa verde of finely chopped cilantro, jalapeno, lemon juice and salt.

ate for at least one hour or up to 24 hours before grilling. Heat a large, non-stick pan or stovetop grill over mediumhigh heat. Brush lightly with oil. When the oil begins to shimmer, season the patties with a little salt and grill for five minutes on the first side. Flip and cook for five minutes on the second side, covering the pan for the last 90 seconds of cooking. Rest one to two minutes. Serve with a side of salad

Pet owners tend to be very selective when choosing commercial pet foods, but sometimes they’re less discerning when they offer scraps of their own food to pets. It can be hard to resist the pleading eyes of a pet looking for a handout from the dinner table. While it is generally fine to offer a tidbit here and there, even small amounts of certain foods can cause illness or even death. Avocado, for example, contains persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs, according to the Gateway Animal Hospital. Birds and rodents are also sensitive to avocado poisoning. Grapes and raisins are other seemingly healthy foods that can be harmful to pets. The toxin inside of these fruits is unknown, but grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure. Cyanide is present in the seeds/pits of plums, pears and peaches, making these fruits potentially hazardous as well. The ASPCA lists coffee, caffeinated products and chocolate as dangerous for pets, too. These items contain substances called methylxanthines that, when ingested by companion animals, can cause vomiting, panting, hyperactivity, tremors, and seizures. Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. Baking chocolate is the most toxic kind of chocolate to dogs. Foods and products artificially sweetened by xylitol will cause insulin release in many species, and this can lead to liver failure. Keep pets away from chewing gum, candy and toothpaste. Common herbs like onions, chives and garlic can cause gastrointestinal irritation and may lead to red blood cell damage. Cats are more susceptible than dogs to these foods, but each species can be affected negatively. Dog owners have frequently offered animal bones as a treat. However, these bones may harbor bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illnesses.

Sports Shady CV costs Manhattan coach new job By Chris Mascaro Manhattan College basketball coach Steve Masiello’s deal to lead University of South Florida’s squad is off, and now Manhattan has placed him on leave. The 36-year-old had provided falsified information on his resume, saying he graduated from the University of Kentucky — where he played as a walk-on under mentor Rick Pitino and Tubby Smith from 1996-2000 — when that was not in fact the case, according to ESPN. On Wednesday afternoon, Manhattan’s athletics department released a statement saying: “As a result of a background check commissioned by the University of South Florida, Manhattan College has learned there is a question of the validity of head men’s basketball coach Steve Masiello’s undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky. Masiello is currently in the process of reviewing his degree status with the University of Kentucky. Manhattan College has placed Masiello on leave while he completes this process with the University.” Manhattan Director of Athletics Bob Byrnes did not return a message requesting comment as of Wednesday evening. Masiello, who never resigned from his position at Manhattan, is still listed as the team’s head coach on the Jaspers’ official athletics website, but his profile no longer calls him “a 2000 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in communications,” as it did before the statement was released. USF also released a statement on Wednesday that read: “During the search for a new men’s basketball coach, an agreement in principle was reached by USF and candidate Steve

HEAD COACH for the Jaspers Steve Masiello talks strategy against the Rider Broncs during a time out at Draddy Gymnasium on Jan. 10. Masiello. The agreement was pending a verification of credentials. Through the verification process, it was determined the candidate’s credentials could not be substantiated and therefore he did not meet the requirements for the position.” Now the question is: Will Manhattan retain Masiello? And, if so, under what stipulations? “Manhattan College will issue further comment as soon as this expedited process is complete,” the school’s statement concludes. The deal with USF was virtually complete when Eastman & Beaudine

— a Texas-based search firm that USF paid $60,000 — found a discrepancy late Tuesday night, according to The Tampa Tribune. Earlier in the day, Masiello met with his team to tell them he would be leaving for USF. When reached on Wednesday, Kentucky spokeswoman Ashley Caressen told ESPN that Masiello attended the school from the fall of 1996 to the summer of 2000, but never earned his degree. Masiello reportedly contacted Kentucky’s registrar office on Tuesday, but Caressen said the conversation “was confidential.” Masiello and his agent, Jason Char-

ney, have not commented on the situation. Pitino, who had Masiello on his staff at Louisville from 2005-11, told ESPN on Wednesday: “If it’s accurate, I’m shocked by it. I had no idea. I left the previous year [to coach the Boston Celtics], and he was on track to graduate.” USF policy states that all full-time coaches must have a bachelor’s degree, and a job description for the men’s basketball coaching position said a candidate must have a master’s degree in “an appropriate area of specialization and six years’ coaching

experience at the high school level or above,” or a bachelor’s degree and eight years’ experience. Just last week, Masiello nearly led the 13th-seeded Jaspers to a shocking upset of defending champion Louisville, as they led with only 2:35 remaining before losing 71-64 in the Midwest Regional’s round of 64 in Orlando. It was Manhattan’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2004 and seventh in program history. On Tuesday, reported that Masiello and USF had agreed on a five-year deal worth more than $1 million per year. Masiello was 60-39 in three seasons at Manhattan, including the program’s fourth 25-win season in 2013-14. A longtime protégé of Pitino, Masiello has known Pitino since he was a ballboy for the Knicks in 1989, when Pitino was their coach. Among those who reportedly supported Masiello’s hiring at USF was Chris Sullivan, a co-founder of the restaurant chain Outback Steakhouse and “influential Tampa resident who is close with Pitino,” according to Masiello asked Pitino about the South Florida job late Friday night, according to The Tampa Bay Times. “He said, ‘What do you think [about USF]?’” Pitino told the newspaper on Saturday before his round of 32 victory over St. Louis. “I said, ‘For you, it’s a grand slam.’” Masiello, a White Plains native who attended Archbishop Stepinac High School, was also an assistant at Manhattan from 2001-05. He is viewed as one of the nation’s best young coaches and is renowned for his recruiting prowess. He helped Louisville bring in New York City guard Russ Smith, who is one of the four finalists for this year’s Naismith Award, given to college basketball’s top player.

Dolphins bounce back after heartbreaking loss to arch-rival By Kaitlin McCormack Entering into a game is always suspenseful, and the intensity increases when you’re up against your rivals. The College of Mount Saint Vincent (CMSV) women’s lacrosse team took on one of its biggest rivals, Mount Saint Mary, on Saturday afternoon and suffered a 14-3 loss. The Dolphins rebounded on Monday with a 19-6 win over Centenary College in a non-conference game. CMSV has lost to Mount Saint Mary the last two years, including an 18-8 decision last season. The friction between the teams has gone on both on and off the field over the years. Going into Saturday’s game, the Dolphins were eager to prove themselves. To add to the tension, there was a constant downpour throughout all 60 minutes of play. When the first whistle blew and the ball went up, it felt like an explosion of players and emotions on the field. The Dolphins held their own for the

first eight minutes. But Mount Saint Mary pulled ahead at the 21:18 mark of the first half to start a six-goal run. Going into halftime, CMSV trailed 8-3, and MSM scored all six goals of the second half. Junior Melina Mezzanotte scored two goals for CMSV and junior Kelly Fraser had the other. Samantha Ramsden had an assist and three ground balls, and I made 12 saves. CMSV put a lot of strong and experienced players on the field. The defending line was made up of all seniors, while three juniors and a sophomore formed the attack. Being a junior, starting in the goal is not a new experience for me. Stepping onto the field as a goalie, the pressure builds in a different way than it does for other players. It is difficult to be a goalie in a losing game. Each goal that goes in weighs on you and you have to try to shake it and stay in the present. It is easy to see everything that happens from the goal. It’s important to talk to the other players on the team

to keep everyone in position. Chemistry is a key component in lacrosse. Without it, the players cannot connect on the field. The Dolphins play with strong chemistry, especially the upperclassmen who have been playing together for so long. The players are able to rely on each other for backup without even verbally communicating. While Saturday’s loss was a difficult one, Monday’s win saw the Dolphins score a season-high 19 goals, led by five from Fraser. Senior Laura Carr had two goals and four assists, and Mezzanotte scored three goals. CMSV is now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline Conference. CMSV will return to action on Wednesday, when it plays host to Farmingdale State at 5 p.m. in a Skyline Conference game. The Dolphins will then travel to Long Island to play St. Joseph’s College at noon on Saturday. Kaitlin McCormack is the starting goalie for the College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s lacrosse team.

This game was all about defense and defense prevailed. Sam Teplitsky provided the bulk of the scoring for Marti’s Knits, finishing with 12 points. Christian Afiryie scored five points for the Drillers and had multiple blocks.

Loeb & Troper: 39 Riverdale Pediatric Hot Shots: 10 Yonah Glazer led Loeb & Troper with 12 points in a dominant win. The Riverdale Pediatric Hot Shots played hard from start to finish, and Yosef Maayan scored three points, but Loeb & Troper looked poised for a deep playoff push.

Varsity Division Hertz Dental Stars: 34 Riverdale Medicine & Rehabilitation Center: 33 Both teams played strong, aggressive basketball and no one wanted to lose. AJ Rodriguez led the Dental Stars to the amazing last-second victory with 25 points. Andrew Heft finished with 23 points for Medicine & Rehab.

Riverdale Y Lightning: 43 Brown’s Jewelers: 17 Noam Siegel was absolutely dominant for the Lightning, finishing with 17 points and controlling the game with his size. William Trump scored six points for Brown’s Jewelers.

Riverdale Pediatric Hot Shots: 37 Global Operations: 30 Adin Fischer led the Hot Shots with

This game was lower scoring but full of intensity. Devonshire pulled off the win with timely shooting and poise. Joel Taylor scored eight points for Riverdale Pediatric.

Second Round Varsity Riverdale Y Lightning: 32 Hertz Dental Stars: 22 The Dental Stars won a one-point game the first round and looked to ride that momentum into the next round, but were unable to ride their momentum. Amittai Najman-Licht finished with 17 points for the Lightning, while AJ Rodriguez scored 10 for Hertz.

Riverdale Pediatric Hot Shots: 27 Devonshire Tires Maccabi: 26 This was one for the story books, as both teams played with a ton of heart. The Hot Shots celebrated after a tough overtime win behind Michael Glazer’s 10 points. Adin Fischer capped his great season with 14 points for Devonshire.

Pro Division DJ Drugs: 51 RNL Vending: 23 Evan Kalichavan had eight points and a handful of assist for DJ Drugs, while Caden Burton’s strong season for RNL Vending ended with 12 points.

Taller Dental Magic: 37 Teens in action: 27 Taller Dental Magic played strong down the stretch and ultimately prevailed behind Avi Tepler’s 14 points. Teens in action team kept the game close until the final minutes, and was led by Artie Aucoin’s nine points.

Super-Pro Division Riverdale Medicine and Rehab Center: 59 Devonshire Tires Maccabi: 57 Both teams were short players, but that did not discourage anyone. Riverdale Medicine and Rehab advanced to the next round behind Jacob Fadda’s 31-point performance. Joseph Rosengarten finished with 15 for Devonshire.
