Hauben exposes beauty à la Bronx By Shant Shahrigian

t least two Bronxes are on display in the glorious exposition of Daniel Hauben’s paintings currently at the Andrew Freedman House. In one version, happy people, healthy trees and bustling stores cram streets and skylines in the artist’s native Kingsbridge and beyond. Another vision depicts the borough as a wasteland where threats lurk and humanity lingers among rough roads and abandoned buildings. While there appears to be a trajectory from Mr. Hauben’s grim paintings, made from the 1970s to 1990s, to his cheerful works, which are more recent, viewers are probably safe ignoring the years printed next to his titles. The 58-year-old painter’s Bronx just might be someplace timeless. In Mr. Hauben’s Black Windows VIII, rows of abandoned grey buildings create a scene that could illustrate a modern retelling of Dante’s Inferno. The artist’s use of a knife and a dentist’s rotary tool on thick swathes of oil paint give the buildings a tactile aspect that makes you think damned souls are waiting to pop out. The three-story building in Freedom & Resting presents a bleak biography of Mr. Hauben. Going from a window at the top left of the painting to one at the bottom right, we see the artist as a boy squirming on his father’s lap, birds flapping their wings next to a caged Barbary ape and a number of references to Mr. Hauben’s painting and his Judaism. Given the artist’s placement of the sad simian at the center of the work, it seems like all the other figures in the painting represent failed outlets of a repressed nature. On the other hand — as a highly abstract, psychedelic work called Expanded View makes clear — Mr. Hauben’s world is not an entirely linear one, and trying to divine his meaning is part of the fun. The panoramic Prospect Station offers a striking contrast with wide canvases among Mr. Hauben’s more recent output. In the former work, a hooded

man walks a wolf-like animal down the middle of a mostly deserted street. It is not clear if he is on the prowl or just on guard as one woman protects a child and another appears to offer her body on the mostly deserted street. Mr. Hauben’s Bronx Vortex and Urban Idyll depict a world as different from that of “Prospect Station” as the Land of Oz was from rural Kansas. (Dorothy and company make appearances in other Hauben works.) Bronx Vortex is a massive fisheye view of Grand Concourse and Fordham Road, with people, pets and city personnel teeming all over. A bus idles in bright white, construction workers collaborate in stark orange and pedestrians patronize stores in a rainbow of colors. A man leaning back on the Grand Concourse banister where John F. Kennedy once gave a presidential campaign speech seems to ask viewers how this ground-level vision of city life compares to their notions of the American dream. Urban Idyll presents a lofty view of Kingsbridge from Mr. Hauben’s balcony, where we see the artist paint while his wife reclines in the far left of the canvas. Across the rest of the work, fine details including a frolicsome couple stand out among colorful rooftops, lush trees, modest architecture and a soothing dusk sky. During an interview at his Riverdale studio, Mr. Hauben acknowledged a relatively recent shift toward brighter colors and themes, saying his wife of about 12 years likes to take credit for the transformation in his outlook. It is also possible that his work verifies the much-hyped transformation of the borough from a burnt-out den of crime to an urban center on the rise. But I’d like to think Mr. Hauben’s new Bronx does not cancel out the old one. Scenes like the derelicts’ redoubt in Prospect Station are just as true now as they were at the time Mr. Hauben documented them. The ugly part of humanity captured in that work and others might go into abeyance in the coming years, but it will always be a part of us. Expanding Views: The Art of Daniel Hauben is at the Andrew Freedman Home, located at 1125 Grand Concourse, until April 5. Admission is free.

Daniel Hauben’s work ranges from the realistic to the surreal, but virtually all of his paintings are deeply expressive of his Bronx environment. Clockwise from top: ‘Bronx Vortex’ depicts the hustle and bustle of a Grand Concourse intersection. ‘Conflict of Interest’ offers an apocalyptic vision. The artist can be seen in a mirror in the lefthand corner of ‘Urban Idyll.’ ‘The Fifth Crusade’ has a medieval aspect.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, March 20, 2014 - B5

Home of the week Peter Segalla I Houlihan Lawrence

Clockwise from top: Surrounded by mature trees and plantings, this luxurious maisonette is private and secluded.

Private house? Luxury condo? Why not the best of both?

iverdale homebuyers have a dilemma. Should they opt for a private house with a private entrance, an outdoor patio, plenty of space and exibility? Or, should they go for an apartment with a doorman, a maintenance staff, a swimming pool, tennis and platform tennis courts, and a secure garage? A lucky few can have the best of both worlds. They’re the ones who’ve chosen a townhouse at Hayden on Hudson, the condominium complex that combines an apartment tower — and all of its amenities and services — with two rows of modern maisonettes on sumptuously landscaped grounds overlooking Riverdale Park and the Hudson beyond. TH-14 at 4477 Douglas Avenue is one of the nicest townhouses in the complex. A triplex with three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, it sits on a secluded knoll at the northern end of

Broad windows on the west side of the house look out onto a private garden, landscaped grounds, Riverdale Park and the Hudson River.

the site. Its arched windows and richly colored brick echo the circular shape and detailing of the nearby tower, but mature trees and shrubs create a decidedly country setting. Inside, it makes the most of its space, light and views thanks to inspired interior design by noted architect Earl Burns Combs. Each oor has unique features. The entry foyer leads past a powder room and formal dining area to a sunken living room with a west-facing wall of oor-to-ceiling glass. The modern country kitchen features Bosch, GE, Electrolux and Zephyr appliances and rose granite counters. At the base of the skylit stairway is a family room with a woodburning ďŹ replace and wet bar and a home ofďŹ ce. Sliding glass doors lead to a private garden. Bedrooms are on the top oor. According to Peter Segalla of Houlihan Lawrence, the 2,941-square-foot home is listed at $1,395,000.

An upstairs bedroom has been outďŹ tted as a guest room and study. Rose granite provides a surface for food preparation and informal dining at an island in the middle of the elegant kitchen. The sunken living room — bounded by oorto-ceiling glass — is big enough for a grand piano and then some.

Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to advertising@

The family room features a wood-burning ďŹ replace and broad sliding glass doors leading to a private patio.

A Yonkers neighborhood celebrates its roots By Jennifer Brauer Last week The Press published a special advertising section about the vibrant McLean Avenue business district in Yonkers as it prepared for its gala St. Patrick’s Day parade on Mar. 22. But the parade isn’t the whole story of a tight-knit group of merchants who look out for one another and for their customers through the auspices of the McLean Avenue Merchants Association (MAMA. Below are stories of just two of McLean Avenue’s stalwart supporters.

Building success by building a strong community Henry Djonbalaj Real Estate, LLC will soon be celebrating 30 years in business. Averaging one new employee per year, owner Henry Djonbalaj now has 30 licensed realtors working for him and they all specialize in residential and commercial real estate sales and rentals. As a professional, Mr. Djonbalaj has always worked tirelessly to strengthen the community. He serves as the Second Vice Chair on the MAMA Board and sits on the board of Lincoln Park Taxpayers Association and he is the prime mover in the creation of a moving 9/11 Memorial that sits across the street from his office. With The help of Mayor Mike Spano, City Councilman Dennis Shepherd and MAMA Chairman R.J. Puma, he also helped garner a $200,000 contribution from Empire City Casino for the renovation of Coyne Park. “I try to give back as much as I can,” he says modestly.

When it comes to this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, Henry is very excited. Everyone in the neighborhood has been great about it, he says, “It is great for the community.” According to Henry, “We have the most supportive people.” And being part of MAMA is the icing on the cake because the board members “are like family.”

118 years of customer service keeps this drug store young

30 years ago Nick Verlizzo, who lived a few blocks away at the time, took over Merk Chemists at 973 McLean Avenue and has been running it ever since. Now, this community and family oriented store has been around for 118 years and it is not going anywhere anytime soon, Mr. Verlizzo jokes. Mr. Verlizzo is also one of the original three members of the McLean Avenue Merchant’s Association and he has enjoyed seeing its transformation into what it is today — with a biggerthan-ever St. Patrick’s Day parade to show for it. “I think the parade — now that it’s merged with South Broadway — will be great,” he said. Offering the town a wide variety of services, Mr. Verlizzo manages to stay close with the neighborhood. “It’s like coming to Cheer’s, when you walk in the door we know your name,” he said. The Daily News’s Maury Allen noted on Merk’s 100th anniversary that Nick said “he wanted to keep the neighborhood traditions at Merk’s going strong.” “We’ve been here for 118 years and we would like to be here for 118 more,” Mr. Verlizzo said emphatically.

What’s cooking?

Wait! Don’t throw away those stems and leaves How often do you buy a head of broccoli, trim off the florets and toss the stems? How about the leaves from a bunch of beets or kohlrabi? If your answer is all the time, read on! As a challenge for myself to gain the most out of produce, I’ve begun to look at all of the things I can do to one vegetable to stretch my ingredients and my dollar. Take a pint of Brussels sprouts, for example. I start by peeling off one to two outer leaves and setting them aside to put in a salad. Then I shave the sprouts halfway, starting at the head on a Japanese mandoline. The shaves get combined with nuts, crumbled cheese and a red wine vinaigrette for a salad. With the remaining half, I use a knife to make two thinly sliced cuts off the edges. Those get quickly sautéed in butter and tossed with pasta and parmesan cheese. Then the last bits, the knobby stems, can be roasted in the oven and served over brown rice with spicy Thai Sambal Olek, a tangy, red hot condiment sold in most grocery and specialty food stores near the Sriracha. That’s four different uses from a single pint of Brussels sprouts! Two other veggies I love to utilize in different ways are the aforementioned kohlrabi and broccoli. If you buy a bunch of kohlrabi and a head of broccoli, you can use all parts of both in two separate dishes. The precious but overlooked broccoli stems and the earthy green leaves of kohlrabi are totally usable and rich in minerals and nutrients. The best part is you can make the two dishes simultaneously or have the slaw and prep the stir-fry ingredients up to four days ahead. Enjoy! From my kitchen to yours. QUICK BROCCOLI STEM AND KOHLRABI SLAW Ser ves 3-4 1 head of broccoli, stems only, florets reser ved 1 bunch kohlrabi, 2-3 bulbs, peeled and cut in half ¼ cup toasted pine nuts* 1 cup parsley leaves Freshly squeeze lemon juice Olive oil, for drizzling Kosher salt, to taste Using a mandoline, slice the peeled kohlrabi and broccoli into thin slices. Just before serving, toss with parsley, freshly squeezed lemon juice, olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Garnish with toasted pine nuts and serve.

Leaves of 1 bunch kohlrabi leaves, chopped 1 red hot chili pepper, sliced crosswise 1 vine ripened tomato, chopped Kosher salt, to taste Heat oil in a large nonstick pan over medium heat. When the oil begins to shimmer, add the vegetables. Once the kohlrabi is wilted and the broccoli

turns bright green, season with salt and serve immediately or cool down and save for the following day and dress with a little rice vinegar. *Cook’s note: To toast pine nuts, place the nuts in a cold pan and heat over medium. Toss ever so often until just golden. Transfer to a plate to cool. Pine nuts tend to burn very easily and are quite pricey, so stay with them at the stove to avoid waste.

Seniors look for ways to downsize Downsizing living spaces and vehicles is common among seniors and many seniors also scale back in the kitchen, where some must make changes because of medical conditions. While it seems like reducing food portions would be easy, those used to prepping meals for a large family may find it difficult. The following tips can make meal preparation efficient and cost-effective. • Divide and store. If you must buy in bulk, invest in a food vacuum sealer or freezer storage bags. Immediately separate meats and poultry into smaller portions before storing them in the freezer. • Plan meals with similar ingredients. To reduce food waste, use leftovers to create casseroles or mix them in with new meals. • Cut recipes in half. Recipes can be cut down depending on how many mouths need to be fed. When baking, cutting back on proportions of ingredients can be challenging. Search online for recipe-scaling programs that can make the work easier. • Cook on the weekend. Use a weekend day to prepare food and package it into small containers in the refrigerator or freezer. • Organize a meal-sharing club. Get together with a few friends who also have empty nests and split cooking duties. — Metro

Sports New coach relishes Dolphins first win in women’s lacrosse By Kaitlin McCormack

PIERRE FRANCOIS executing the triple jump at the New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory for the CUNY Athletic Conference Indoor track and field Championships on March 2.

Jumper falls just short in NCAA meet By Chris Mascaro It wasn’t as easy as a hop, skip and a jump for Lehman College triple jumper Pierre Francois to reach the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships this past weekend. Born in Haiti, Francois moved to the states in 2007 and starred at DeWitt Clinton High School and Bronx Community College before earning a scholarship to Lehman. He spent the last year “getting rid of the bad habits he had,” according to coach Pete Charles, and only now has the sophomore begun to realize his potential. Advancing to the championships was one hurdle, but physically getting there was another.

After an early wake-up call on Thursday, Francois navigated to Kennedy Airport before he skipped his way to Lincoln, Nebraska aboard two flights. There was a dinner for all the participants upon arrival, but when competition began the next day, Francois was relegated to a practice runway, as the triple jump heats weren’t scheduled until Saturday. Days of buildup led to Francois’ first of three jumps. He took off, barreling toward the take off line — he hopped, skipped and jumped. Foul. His foot stepped over the line. Luckily, his second jump was clean, and his mark of 14.15 meters placed him 10th in the country. But only the top nine advanced to the final.

“I wasn’t really happy with my performance, I expected to do much better,” Francois said. “I wanted to be the champion,. That’s what I worked for the whole season.” The trip was far from a failure, Charles said. Because Francois had never mastered proper technique, he was susceptible to injuries, and they came to all parts of his legs — ankles, knees, hamstrings, quads. But he has now learned to come off the ground quicker, relying less on his power and more on his speed. “It’s his first season with me, so I totally had to break down his technique and start from scratch,” Charles said. “He picked it up quickly.” So Francois is optimistic his championship dreams can be

realized in the outdoor season this spring. “I just have to learn from my mistakes,” he said. “It was my first time competing at the NCAAs. I’m very happy I made it.” Francois’ disappointment in his finish speaks to the confidence he has in himself. He described the competition as “about the same as I expected,” and wasn’t intimidated by the stage despite the long anticipation. Instead, he soaked in the moment — even comparing the Nebraska countryside to the areas where he lived in rural Haiti. “I wasn’t nervous, I was calm, I was ready,” he said. “It just happened that I didn’t get it right.”

The College of Mount Saint Vincent women’s lacrosse team got their first win of the season on March 13 in a home game against Thomas College, 16-12, despite being outshot, 38-27. The Dolphins had seven different scorers, led by junior Melina Mezzanotte, who scored a career-high five goals. “I always set goals for myself, but I didn’t expect to make so many goals,” Mezzanotte said. “It forces me to set my standards higher and push myself.” The game looked shaky early on for the Dolphins, as Thomas scored the first three goals of the game. But CMSV came back fighting to take a 6-4 by halftime. “I started to get nervous,” said senior captain Laura Carr, who had a goal and two assists. “I knew it wasn’t because they were better than us, but more because we needed to get into it.” The Dolphins kept their lead throughout the second half, and took a 16-9 lead on junior Kelly Fraser’s third goal of the game with 5:46 to play. CMSV has yet to practice on an outdoor field. Instead, the team practices in the basketball gym on campus. The transition from a small gym to the huge field is a big adjustment for the players, but they rose to the challenge on Thursday. “We try our best to work with what we have, but sometimes not having a field to practice on is detrimental to us,” Carr said. “However, I’m really impressed with how well we’ve been able to adapt when we get on the field.” Freshman Shannon Steimel scored four goals and had two

assists, while Fraser also had three assists. Carr, Catherine Maas, Jessica McAllister and Brittany DeGennaro each scored a goal, and Kaitlin McCormack recorded a career-high 14 saves. It also marked the first win for new head coach Jill Hutchinson. She had high hopes going into the game and felt confident as it started. “It feels great to have my first win as a head coach,” Hutchinson said. “The season started off a bit rocky, but I believe this is where we are going to turn it around and be very successful.” This win was exactly what they needed, according to the team. Mezzanotte hopes that it will give them the confidence to do well in the future. “Most importantly, we played well together,” Carr said. The Dolphins (1-2) will return to the field on Monday at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. Uh oh, here comes Louisville, Jaspers’ first opponent As winners of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference basketball tournament, the Manhattan College Jaspers are going to the big dance — the NCAA tournament — for the first time in a decade. The atmosphere was festive inside Thomas Hall as Coach Steve Masiello sat down in front of a large flat-screen television to watch CBS’s Tournament Selection Show and learn where and against whom his team will play in the first round. Moments before the show began, the network played “One Shining Moment,” a song set to a montage of tournament highlights generally reserved for the minutes after the championship game. In it, teams of a bygone era were shown basking in their moment playing in college basketball’s most popular event. Masiello mouthed the words as the song played, dreaming about how his team’s shining moment might unfold. Had he known what the selection committee had in store for the Jaspers, his sense of wonderment may have been curtailed. Manhattan got the 13th seed in the Midwest Region and will play fourth-seeded Louisville — the defending national champions — at 9:50 p.m. on Thursday at the Amway Center in Orlando. The game will be aired on TNT. Masiello and Cardinals coach Rick Pitino have had a close relationship since Masiello was a ballboy for the Knicks in 1989, when Pitino was head coach. He was a walk-on at Kentucky when Pitino was there, and he was also an assistant at Louisville from 2005 to 2011 under Pitino. “Not fun for me,” the 36-yearold coach said about the matchup, which will be Manhattan’s first NCAA tournament game in 10 years. “All I’m worried about is Manhattan. I’m not looking for a story.” Manhattan (25-7) is one of the hotter teams in the country, having won 11 of its last 12 games. But Louisville (29-5)

is arguably the hottest, as the Cardinals have won 12 of 13, including an average margin of victory of more than 33 points en route to the American Athletic Conference tournament championship last weekend. How the fifth-ranked team in the country only got a No. 4 seed is beyond Masiello. “That’s the strongest four seed, I bet, in the last 15 years,” Masiello said. “They’re better than us at every position. I’m going up against the guy that taught me everything I know, so they have every advantage there is. From a matchup standpoint, there’s not one good thing about it for Manhattan. They’re the bigger, better version of us.” Added Rhamel Brown: “Louisville’s been dominating all around the country.” Many experts pegged Louisville for at least a No. 2 seed, potentially a No. 1, behind New York City guard Russ Smith, who Masiello has known since he was in grade school. While Masiello has intimate knowledge of the Louisville program and its players, it doesn’t necessarily give the Jaspers a competitive advantage, the Jaspers coach said. “It’s kind of like the Mike Tyson analogy: Everyone has a plan until you get hit,” Masiello said, adding that Louisville beat Manhattan by 28 points in last season’s opener. “I can know what they’re going to do. It doesn’t mean I’m going to stop [it].” Still, Sunday was a time for celebration at Manhattan. Once the bacon-wrapped scallops and marinated grilled chicken had been put away, the team’s three senior stalwarts — Brown, George Beamon and Michael Alvarado — sat in individual couches in the first row of the viewing party alongside Masiello and the MAAC championship trophy and net they cut down following the game. Hearing their name called as one of the field’s 68 teams was the icing on the basketballshaped cake perched on one of the tables inside Cafe 1853. “It’s a blessing,” Beamon said. “I’m ecstatic right now.”
