New Spierman to spearhead Bronx Opera By James Palmer email@example.com

Bronx Opera sings life into Mechem comedy, ‘The Rivals’ By James Palmer firstname.lastname@example.org
he Bronx Opera Company opened its 47th season last weekend with a robust and spirited production of Kirke Mechem’s The Rivals at the Lovinger Theater on the Lehman College campus. The libretto is based on Richard Sheridan’s comic play of manners from 1775, featuring the character of Mrs. Malaprop, whose misuse of the English language was so renowned that her name inspired the creation of a new word in the lexicon. Mr. Mechem alters the setting of the play from the spa town of Bath in the United Kingdom during the 18th century to the affluent enclave of Newport, R.I. around 1900 for his opera. Though Mr. Mechem completed composing The Rivals in 2002, it did not premiere until 2011. The Bronx Opera’s production of the opera marks its first performance in New York. Michael Spierman, 70, the Bronx Opera Company’s founder and artistic director said he chose to present The Rivals because he aims not only to produce operas from the repertoire widely familiar to audiences, but also to promote the works of
contemporary composers. “It’s an amazing opera, worthy of performance,” Mr. Spierman said of The Rivals. “If one does not perform the work of living composers, one effectively finds the art form becoming a museum piece.” Two different casts performed in last weekend’s dual shows. During Sunday’s matinee, soprano Lindsay Ohse’s voice soared above the orchestra in her turn as Lydia Larkspur, Mrs. Malaprop’s niece, who despises the idea of wedding a rich man while pining for her romanticized vision of life with an impoverished composer — a life she
describes as “charming poverty.” Patrick McNally sang in a fullbodied baritone as the unflappable Captain Jack Absolute, who is so enamored of his own cunning that he unwittingly creates a rival for Lydia’s affection in himself. And tenor Blake Friedman’s sad, wealthy sack and Jack’s friend Nicholas Astor, who bemoans his vast fortune worrying that no woman will love him for anything but his money, gave the opera one of its few serious moments during his compelling aria longing for Lydia’s cousin Julia. All three singers brought the flawed but alluring characters to life
onstage. Soprano Allyson Herman, as Mrs. Malaprop’s clever and busy maid Lucy, leads a chorus of effusive servants whose jubilant voices supported the opera’s luminous music. Aware of the surreptitious amorous dealings among the wealthier members of the ensemble around her, Lucy takes advantage of her position and the others’ misperception of her discreet nature for financial gain as she slyly sings, “Simplicity, I guarantee, will make a millionaire of me.” C. David Morrow played the fortune-hunting Baron von Hakenbock, who marched and sang in a booming bass-baritone, often to the steady beat of regimental music. And of course, Mrs. Malaprop, as portrayed by the mezzo-soprano Julie De Vaere, delivered some of the most difficult lines straight-faced without a hitch. This was no small task considering at various moments, Ms. Da Vaere had to articulate the words flatulence in place of flattery, obstetrics for object and incontinence rather than inconvenience. The Bronx Opera Orchestra, always a potent force, was at the height of its power on Sunday afternoon under the baton of Mr. Spierman. The conductor and musicians captured the frenzy of sharp shifts (Continued on page B8)

hile the family of composer Richard Wagner struggles for power to control their patriarch’s operatic legacy at the annual Bayreuth Festival in Germany, the relatives of Anthony and Sally Amato let the couple’s boutique opera company based in East Village dissolve after 61 years. But patrons of the Bronx’s most famous and longest running operatic endeavor have no reasons for such concerns thanks to Benjamin Spierman. Mr. Spierman is the son of Michael Spierman, who founded the Bronx Opera Company in 1967. Benjamin Spierman, who is an only child, says he plans to continue his father’s legacy in the borough. He is currently the company’s associate artistic director. “The Wagners are all fighting for it, and none of the Amatos wanted it,” Benjamin Spierman said of the two families and their operatic legacies. Benjamin Spierman has veered slightly off the path of his father and embraced the stage rather than conduct. Though he has performed as a bass baritone, BENJAMIN SPIERMAN today, he focuses on the stage direction side of opera. His credits include Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow in Indianapolis, Ind. and Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot in Dayton, Ohio. He is scheduled to work on Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma in St. Petersburg, Fla., in June. “First, I think it would be a bit Freudian if I followed my father into conducting,” Benjamin Spierman said. “But if I went into conducting, I wouldn’t be able to work with my father, which we both enjoy” Business and family often combine to create tension, but the Spiermans seem to depend upon one another for support. During a recent rehearsal for the company’s latest production, Kirke Mechem’s The Rivals, Michael Spierman reached a particularly complex part of phrasing in the score and experienced difficulty synchronizing with a singer onstage when he called to his son from the orchestra pit, “Ben, please help me!” Similar to Mr. Wagner’s grandsons, Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner, Benjamin Spierman has found his calling and fulfillment in the stage directing of operas. In addition to his contributions to the Bronx Opera Company, Benjamin Spierman has staged operas in 22 states, frequently working with many of the singers who have performed in the borough. Many of those singers have moved to larger stages in the United States and abroad — a hallmark of the Bronx Opera. “We’re trying to create a community here in the company, then we bring that community to people here in the Bronx,” said Benjamin Spierman, whose wife Hannah Spierman is a soprano who also works behind the scenes with him occasionally. As evidence of these close personal and professional relationships that are maintained even as careers advance, Benjamin Spierman mentioned Kyle Pfortmiller, a baritone who was best man at his wedding and recently sang on the Met stage in Nico Muhly’s opera Two Boys. Any kind of artistic pursuit is challenging today when the economy is still faltering and funding for the arts is continually slashed, but producing opera, even on a small scale, is relatively expensive. Benjamin Spierman said his company’s annual budget is $220,000. This environment leaves little room for error, as City Opera learned last year. The company was known for looking beyond the conventional repertoire and embracing innovative works to attract a wide audience, but critics blame financial mismanagement for the institution’s demise and eventual closure in 2013 after seven decades. Benjamin Spierman says that while his father’s musical talents have driven the artistic side of the company for nearly 50 years, his business acumen has preserved it during that time. “Our philosophy has always been, if we don’t have the money and we can’t afford to produce it, then we don’t produce it,” Benjamin Spierman said.

B8 - THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, January 16, 2014
Eat healthy this year by taking time to be your own personal chef By Danielle Rehfeld firstname.lastname@example.org This January, I’ve been challenging myself to get in gear and make eating well a priority. My pledge? Be my own personal chef. So I’ve set aside a little time ever y few days to make simple breakfasts, soups, salads and entrees. When my fridge is stocked up with healthy foods, the choice to eat right becomes far easier. I encourage you to go through your cabinets and see if there are any half bags of grains, legumes, containers of spices, etc. Think about combining items that would be good in a big batch of soup which you can cool down, portion and freeze. Here are a few wholesome, inexpensive ideas that take under 10 minutes to prep. They will save you time, money and undoubtedly get you eating natural, unprocessed food fast. If you have olive oil, lemons, salt and pepper, you’re already halfway there.

You can prep two a day, leaving one uncooked, covering with plastic wrap so that your breakfast is one short step away from being ready the following morning. cHicKpea Salad Rinse one can of drained chickpeas with cold water. Bx Opera sings Mechem comedy ‘The Rivals’ (continued from page B1) in plot and the comic mood swings among the characters throughout the composer’s score — from matching Lydia’s spontaneous outpouring of affection upon seeing her allegedly impecunious Waverly posing as a rich suitor in her Aunt’s parlor to the introduction of Nick as he deliberately plods along a tennis court, subtly expressed by light percussion and plucking strings. Benjamin Spierman provided a steady hand as stage director, keeping the flurries of action in check and the twisting plot clear to the audience while maximizing the comic moments in Mr. Mechem’s libretto. Scott Aronow designed a sleek and effective set that allowed the chorus of servants to swiftly move the scenery and props to keep the action onstage moving. The Bronx Opera Company will perform The Rivals at the Hunter College Kaye Playhouse, located at East 68th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues, on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25, $30 and $40. Discounts are available for senior citizens and students. For more information, call the Kaye Playhouse box office at 212-772-4448.
Opera company will remain family tradition (continued from page B1) The company has performed comedies and works by living composers, like The Rivals by Mr. Mecham, as well as tragedies from the repertoire as scheduled this spring with Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata. Looking forward, Benjamin Spierman says he plans to continue the Bronx Opera’s outreach to local schools in the borough to reach potential operagoers from the upcoming generation. The company performs for students in Co-Op City, Fordham Heights and the Melrose sections of the Bronx. Recently, an estimated 500 students from the borough viewed an abridged version of their latest production, The Rivals, at Lehman College’s Lovinger Theatre. “Opera is an art form that anyone can appreciate,” Benjamin Spierman said. “We want to make it as accessible to as many people as possible to enjoy.”
