* Before Ripley’s introduction of the Inverse Ratio photocontrol, accurate True Inverse Ratio Control was an elusive goal in the lighting control industry. The premise of Inverse Ratio Control is to reduce burn-time and energy consumption by allowing lights to be turned off at a lower light level setting than the light level setting utilized to turn them on. However, with a Turn OFF setting lower than the Turn ON setting, a typical photocontrol would (short-cycle) turn the lights on at the Turn ON value and turn them back off as soon as the light level dropped below the (lower) Turn OFF setting. Various methods of circumventing the (short-cycle) problem have been incorporated into competitive units, but they rely on inaccurate, fixed time-delay schemes. In order to achieve true consistency and true accuracy, and provide a True Inverse Ratio Control, Ripley’s microcontroller technology continuously samples and monitors conditions to optimize the photocontrol’s performance.

Power Consumption Electronic Twist-Lock Photocontrols Ripley 120 Volt photocontrols require less than 0.5 watts of power The big deal about photocontrol power requirements - Cost of Operation The seemingly low level of power required for operating individual photocontrols becomes exceedingly significant when considering the large quantities generally required. Multiply the number of photocontrols by the power required for each, and the overall power requirements become obvious.

Calculating the costs associated with Electrical Demand can be much more complex. A demand charge is levied monthly based on the maximum average rate of energy consumption over a time period of measurement (typically 15 or 30 minutes). This time period of measurement is generally referred to as the Demand Interval. Additionally, many utility rates include provisions for assessing Peak Demand charges based on the single highest Demand Interval occurring during summer months, that can substantially affect utility bills for the month of occurrence, and each of the following eleven months.

The big deal about infrared negative effect on control accuracy •

Dual Phototransistor Technology

Silicon phototransistors sense and respond to both visible and infrared light across a spectral range, but can not differentiate between the two. The presence of infrared (from any source) at the phototransistor has the negative effect of causing the phototransistor to respond to more than just visible light. The resulting false light level reading causes the photocontrol to respond inaccurately. The higher the ratio of infrared to visible light, the greater the error in control accuracy.

How about Infrared Filters? •

Most photocontrols use an optical plastic filter behind the window to filter out infrared, but they only filter the infrared component of light coming through the sensor window. Optical plastic filters do not filter the potentially substantial amounts of infrared coming through the photocontrol cover, or the infrared emanating from the photocontrol’s own internal electronics, or the infrared coming from the luminaire itself. Over time, Ultraviolet (UV) Light fades and/or deteriorates the filter causing inadequate accuracy.

ANSI C 136.10: ANSI: American National Standards Institute C136: Reference for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment .10: Refers to Locking type photocontrol devices and mating receptacles AMBIENT LIGHT: The general overall lighting in an area. BRIGHTNESS: Visual perception of the luminance of a light source. BURN TIME: The number of hours a photocontrol (lighting control) is programmed to allow lamp fixture to burn. BUTTON: Small compact photocontrol, usually hardwired. Used mostly with selected Post Top Luminaries. Can be installed inside the luminaire housing. CADMIUM PHOTOCELL: Sees light most like the human eye - however the Cadmium Photocell tends to fade over time and will drift. Cadmium is also a hazardous material and some areas have strict regulations on its disposal and have banned its use. CANDLEPOWER / FOOTCANDLE: Just as for “lumens,” candlepower is a measure of brightness that is adjusted to the selective sensitivity of the human eye. A beam pattern is never completely equally bright in all directions. The brightness of light at a specific point is measured in candlepower. The total amount of light present in a beam pattern is measured in lumens. FAIL-OFF PHOTOCONTROL: A photocontrol that is designed so that the load remains off when the most likely failure occurs. FAIL-ON PHOTOCONTROL: A photocontrol designed so that the light remains on when the most likely failure occurs. FILTERED (Verses Ripley’s IRES): Filtered photocontrols use a filtered window to detect sensitivity to infrared. Con to filtered window: Filter does not capture ambient infrared, only what comes through the window. Over time, UV fades the filter causing inadequate accuracy. Drift results. Ripley’s IRES does not filter infrared, it totally cancels / eliminates infrared. HAZARDOUS LOCATION: An area where ignitable vapors or dust may cause a fire or explosion created by energy emitted from lighting or other electrical equipment. FOOTCANDLE (fc): A quantitative unit for measuring luminance. ILLUMINATING ENGINEERING SOCIETY OF NORTH AMERICA (IESNA): Professional society of lighting engineers, manufacturing companies and others professionally involved in lighting, devoted to lighting information and evaluation, as well as the development of national standards. INFRARED (IR): The name means “below red” (from the Latin infra, “below”), red being the color of visible light of longest wavelength. The Invisible part of light with longer wavelengths that are felt as heat radiation. The invisible heat radiations beyond the red end on the visible spectrum. Impossible or nearly impossible to see by the human eye. Light that is so red, we cannot see it.

DRIFT: Drift means that the cell suffers an irreversible change toward lower sensitivity and higher control turn-ON and OFF.

The sun produces a continuous spectrum of light that spans infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light. What our eyes perceive as white sunlight is actually a mixture of all the colors of the rainbow.

IRES (INFRARED ELIMINATING SYSTEM): Ripley’s (patent pending) Infrared Eliminating photocontrol. Truly and precisely cancels / eliminates the unit’s reaction to infrared, maintaining true accuracy. It replaces filtered units used by others. IRES photocontrols have dual photocells; one targets ambient light, one targets infrared. These two photocells work together as an electronic filter, to eliminate infrared from all sources. JOULE (J): A metric unit of work or energy, equivalent to one watt second. LIGHT POLLUTION: Any adverse effect of man-made light. Often used to denote urban sky glow. LUMEN: Measurement of light. It is the amount of light that falls on a unit area at unit distance from a source of one footcandle (fc). One footcandle is one lumen per square foot. LUMINAIRE: The more modern term for Lantern. A housing or fixture that holds a light source (lamp). LUX: The metric unit of measurement of luminance. MICROCONTROLLER (MICROPROCESSOR) – Latest technology… usually used for advanced features such as built-in timing functions, inverse ratio, etc… more expensive than electronic. Microcontrollers are electronic controls with added computer programming. MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor): Surge arrestor used to suppress voltage transients and reduces the likelihood of damage to the fixture or the control caused by voltage surges or line noise. MULTI-VOLT: One unit designed to operate within the range of 105-305 volts. NON-SHORTING CAP: A device (with a weather seal) that provides an open circuit between line and load when a photocontrol is not used. Also called an “open cap”. Nonshorting caps are color coded red. PHOTOCONTROL / PHOTOCELL / PHOTO ELECTRIC CELL / LIGHT SENSOR: A light-sensing device used to control luminaries, which turns the lamp off during the day, and turns the lamp on at night, in response to detected light levels. A socket for the photocontrol is usually built into, and is part of the luminaire housing.

PLUG: A cluster of blades fixed to a photocontrol, shorting cap, or non-shorting cap to establish an electrical mechanical connection when inserted into a mating receptacle. RECEPTACLE: An outlet that s intended to be equipped electrically and mechanically to receive the plug. SHORTING CAP: A device that provides a closed circuit between line and load when a photocontrol is not used. Shorting Caps are color coded black. SILICON PHOTOCELL: A small area silicon junction molded in plastic, and therefore inherently hermetically sealed. It tends to operate more favorably in harsh atmospheres. Silicon cells are generally more responsive to reds and infrareds; making the light appear to turn on and off at varying levels according to different atmospheric light changes. SURGE PROTECTION: A unit designed to protect electrical devices from power surges and voltage spikes. Surge protectors attempt to regulate the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or shorting to ground voltage above a safe threshold. Photocontrols most commonly use MOV’s. TIME DELAY: A device that delays a control response by a period of time. Prevents sudden changes in the ambient light level from turning a fixture off during night-time operation. TURN-OFF AND/OR TURN-ON RESPONSE TIME: The time between a rapid change in light level and the switching of the load. Turn-Off delay may be different than turn-on delay. TURN-OFF / TURN-ON RATIO: The turn-off light level divided by the turn-on light level. TWIST-LOCK: A three-prong locking type of electrical plug commonly used with photocontrols to prevent the power source and the photocontrol from being accidentally disconnected.
