DESNA 2011 Winter and Spring Highlights Recent Highlights and Events • Vinok Workshop: Ladies of DESNA met several times this spring to refresh and re-design their Vinky for Hopak. They cut ribbons and arranged the flowers. End result – a floral display of unique designs and a hands-on experience of making Vinky! • Pier 21 Event: On the shore of Halifax sits the Pier 21 in Atlantic waters. After WWII, this dock witnessed many numbers of Ukrainian immigrants sailing into Nova Scotia. To honour the Ukrainian men and women who disembarked at Pier 21, the League of Ukrainian Canadian Women (LUCW) held a fundraising event ion April 30th. DESNA was fortunate to be invited by LUCW to the evening and excite the crowd with the company’s Canadian Country Dance. • Guest Performers for the Shevchenko Musical Ensemble: This year, DESNA had two opportunities to perform for the Shevchenko Musical Ensemble, a local orchestra and folk choir. At the Ensemble’s annual concert this May, DESNA premiered the South African Miner’s dance.

Toronto Ukrainian Dance Intensive Bringing Ukrainian Dancers Together In June of 2011, DESNA hosted the 2011 Toronto Ukrainian Dance Intensive, a two day workshop instructed by Merited Artist of Ukraine, and ballet master of the Virsky National Ukrainian Dance Company in Kiev, Vasyl Kolomeiets. Dancers from Toronto, Windsor and even the USA gathered at the Ballet Jorgen Studios located at George Brown College’s Casa Loma Campus.

• Annual Malanka: Every year, DESNA hosts an annual Ukrainian New Year’s Celebration with local sports association, S.A. Ukraina. In January of 2011, DESNA dazzled audiences with performances of Hutsul and Hopak. Lina Berezovska, DESNA’s secretary and a dancer was awarded the Michael Both award for outstanding contribution to DESNA. After an amazing dinner, our dancers joined guests in dancing the night away to the sounds of Nove Pokolinya. • Koliada: In the early part of every New Year, DESNA members warm up their vocal cords for Koliada so they can meet and greet families throughout Toronto with traditional Ukrainian carols. Not only is this a major fundraiser for DESNA, but it is also a memorable time for dancers, hosts and guests.

Vasyl guided dancers through a challenging Vaganova Technique ballet barre, centre floor technical combinations, turns and combinations from the corner, and several choreographic combinations. Dancers had the opportunity to improve their dance technique, learn new exercises and dance styles, and meet other Ukrainian dancers from the Toronto area and throughout North America. “It was great to work with Vasyl – he made the workshop interesting, demanding and a lot of fun. I wasn’t expecting for him to put out two chairs in the middle of the floor and ask us to spin a figure eight around them. It really was a

test of my capabilities!” Lesia Harhaj, Workshop Participant DESNA dancers pose at the Pier 21 event ready for “Canadian Country.”
