“Water treading” recreational centre

Recreational centre, Dunn Swamp in Wollemi National Park Bachelor of UNSW graduate project, 2013 Directed by : Prof. Glenn Murcutt Under guidance of: Ashley Dunn Keywords: regional, response to the site, cultural Because of the Dam, the river is very calm and has a smooth surface. I am interested in the waterline along Gudgegong river wrapped with thick layer of reeds. Reeds on both shoreline connected when I sit on the tree trunk looking out to the river. This building tried to change people’s perspective on looking at the landscape. This building allows people to touch the water, see the light reflects on water, look out through the reeds, and feel the movement of the nature.

Dunn Swamp is known to local Wiradjuri aboriginal people, is formed by the trapped waters of Kandos Weir, which was built in the late 1920s when the Cudgegong River was dammed to provide water for the Kandoes Cement Works. The constructed waterway is surrounded by gum bushlands, pagodas, flora and faunal, waterfall and sheer escarpments. The place is full of stories and layered with traces of rich history.

“Alley

Mixed-use apartment, Norht Bondi, Sydney Bachelor of UNSW project, S1 2013 Directed by : Prof. Harry Margailt Under guidance of: Suzannah Potts Keywords: Residential, commercial In the first site visit, I saw lots of tight and narrow corridor between buildings, some of them are apartment entry and access to the backyard. I tried to transform this building pattern in my design by using the concept of gaps to create a secret garden for each apartment unit, which gives each unit a individual outdoor space and small garden.

“Touch the sky library

Civic Library in Matraville, Sydney Under guidance of: Matt Day Keywords: Public, social, library 1. A library like Jack and the beanstalk walking up to the sky and through the cloud 2. A Library allows people to experience a delightful journey- this can be seen on the roof line and the shapes of the pods. These allow the space to open to the surrounding environment. 3. Threshold is filtered and blurred by the green space- as you walk away from the busy street, walk across a large open green space. Beside, as you travel up to the library by the elevator, you are separated from the crowd and entered a new inspiring world. 4. Blurring the line between private and public space- there is no giant open spaces furnitured by long row of table, comfortable sofa carefully placed in clusters throughout the space invite people to sit down, relax and read.

Olafur Eliasson Gallery space Art Gallery in Newtown, Sydney Keywords: Public, Gallery. community The gallery space is catered specifically for Eliasson’s artworks. The main exhibition space is divided to several parts and connected with stairs. This allows the audience view the artwork from different level of height and in the same time undertaking a journey while walking through the stairs. The gallery spaces should get the audience constantly involved and is a unique way for audience to find their own experience in the spaces. Besides, the light is manipulated in such a way that in each room we can see extreme dark areas and bright areas because some of his work uses artificial lighting to affect audience’s mood and atmosphere. Some sharp angle of the room add a more dramatic and mystery environment for the audiences to view the artwork. The roof and exterior façade is sculptural and geometrical, this is a extraction of Eliasson’s work “take your time”. Concrete is the mainly used throughout the whole building, simple materiality is chosen to create a contrast with the sculptural roof and sharp angled façade.

Artist: Olafur Eliasson Medium: large installations “Take your time”, photographs, sculptures Eliasson prompts an intensive engagement with the world and offers a fresh consideration of everyday life. He wants people to connect with his art piece and to reflect of their everyday life. In his project, “Take your time”, is highlighted with eccentric and highly geometric pattern, this art piece allows people to pause and reflect while they walk through the art piece. By looking at and walking through his art piece, it’s like undertake a journey. I have transformed the idea of “journey” into architectural element and expressed in my design.
