Editor's Letter You will have noticed, enclosed within this season’s magazine, the sales brochure for The George Hotel. After 17 years Anne and Richard have decided to sell the hotel. As Managing Director my job is to make sure it is sold to someone who will treasure it as much as Anne and Richard, and who will look after the wonderful team of staff we have. In the meantime we will continue to run it as we have for the last 17 years, offering you a place to grab a coffee, enjoy lunch with friends or celebrate an occasion. Our theme nights and market days are all planned in for the year and all our events will continue to happen as normal. Long term I will continue to look after the shop with the support of a great team who have been working together for many years. In fact this year our Sales Director, Debbie, will be celebrating 20 years with Anne Furbank. My thanks go to her for her dedication to the business over all those years and I am sure we will be having a little glass of something to toast the occasion!

Letter from

Annie

Life is full of chapters and it is time for Richard and I to close another chapter in our lives with the sale of The George. We are immensely proud of The George and the team that is there but we have reached a time in our lives when we want to hand over the responsibility to someone else. As Becky has already said, her priority will be to find someone who will love it as much as we do and will continue to nurture this historic building. You can read more about our journey with The George later in the magazine.

“We are immensely proud of The George and the team that is there...”

It seems a long time ago now but I wanted to look back into 2019 quickly to say a huge thank you to every one of you who donated money to MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association) in support of my last marathon. Every donation spurred me on and I was thrilled, not only to complete it, but to do it in under 4 hours. Not bad for an old girl! That money will help fund research into this awful disease with the ultimate aim of finding a cure. Here’s wishing you a very happy spring 2020.

Been there, done that, Got the T-shirt! On Sunday 20th October 2019, I stood on the start line of the Yorkshire Marathon feeling very apprehensive but determined to achieve my goal of finishing in under 4 hours, to raise muchneeded funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. I had trained really hard for the twelve weeks prior to the race with huge support from my husband, Richard, who never complained when I got up at five a.m. during the week to run, or when I said “No” to Saturday night social functions because I had my long training runs scheduled on Sunday mornings – he never grumbled. I had already decided to use the four-hour pacers provided by the Marathon organisers – and I’m so pleased I did – the two designated runners were easily identified by the large flags on their backs, and they were brilliant! Until about six miles, there

was a large group around them, then people started dropping off the pace and, by the half-way mark (13.1 miles) there was plenty of room for me to stay close to the pacers. So many of my lovely friends had travelled up to York to support me, which was wonderful and, when the body was really hurting at 19 miles, those shouts of “Come on Annie!” really spurred me on. At the 25 mile mark, we had a horrible long hill to climb before finally reaching the top and running down to the finishing line. As I ran under the timing clock, it read 3-57-48 – I did it! I won my F70-75 age group by 24 minutes and found out later that I had also won the F65-70 age group by 8 minutes but, most importantly, with amazing support from so many of you, I raised over £7000 for MNDA. So, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! And I have promised Richard it was definitely my last Marathon!

Spring

Fashion Week Starts Monday 16th March Often when we have a colourful fashion year, designers dish up a neutral antithesis in the following year. However 2020 is proving to be just as colourful as 2019, with Neon brights, tropical prints and denim blues taking centre stage for the fashion trends in 2020. Vogue highlights a couple of other key trends for spring 2020 with short suits, cut-outs and raffia all being seen on the spring catwalks of Chloe, Givenchy, Dior and Christopher Kane. Have no fear - while the trend is there we will not have you baring your midriff or disintegrating under a raffia dress. From those creative catwalks come a more wearable version so you will undoubtedly see those trends but in a much more wearable style. Fashion is an incredible journey of ideas, inspiration and flare and this Spring Fashion Week we hope to inspire you with our own catwalk shows and take you on a creative journey.

Fashion Trends Topical Tropical Prints

Ditsy floral prints may seem a little lack lustre against the backdrop of this season’s tropical print extravaganza in the collections. It’s as big and as bold as you want it to be. From head to toe you will disappear into your very own jungle and why not throw yourself into this trend. It will make you feel alive, bright and at one with nature.

Away Anchors

Sail away this spring and summer with the new take on nautical. Not only is it about the colour blue but ropes and anchor prints have also made an appearance. And rather than a dark navy blue a softness has been introduced to the tone with more denim blues featuring. Keep this trend simple though! There is no need to jump overboard with the look. Tone it down with neutral tones and natural fabrics for an earthy, summer breeze feel.

Fairytale fashion

Fashion is storytelling on a personal scale so it is no wonder that fairytales and fashion become interlinked. This season sees fantasy, beauty and history play a part in collections. Longer line dresses have been moulded from 70s fashion and brought up to date with brighter colour tones and fuller sleeves. Soft, floaty, silk and satin fabrics add the magic and dresses in general offer a genuine femininity and a flowing feel. Prints, whether they are flora or fauna, tell their own story and take you on a journey to places you may dream of.

Wedding special 2020 is reputed to be one of the busiest years for weddings. The 20th June already deemed to be the most popular date, with 10,000 couples tying the knot on that day. That may have something to do with the summer solstice weekend and making the most of the daylight hours. It does have a nice ring to it – 2020 – and will certainly help when remembering anniversaries in years to come! We are already in full swing for our wedding season, with mothers of the bride and groom making their selections since the end of 2019. Don’t panic though – there is still plenty to see and plenty of variety from which to choose. In fact, this year we have more variety than ever before, with new labels Ronald Joyce, Ispirato and Veromia being added to our already comprehensive list of brands that offer special occasion wear. ‘We’ve seen two quite distinctive trends in occasion wear this season,’ said Rebecca Furbank. ‘The softer silhouette with chiffon skirts, floral prints and fluid feel match up to the fairytale themes of weddings that people have been opting for.

“This year we have more variety than ever before.”

‘But in sharp contrast are the very clean lines and single colour outfits – a more understated look. Maybe matching up to those weddings that are looking to be a simpler affair.’ ‘Satin and embossed fabrics are adding the luxury and, alongside the softer pastel shades, there are some vibrant gold and aqua colours to add a bit of punch.’ 18

While 2020 may be a busy wedding year, each wedding is unique and incredibly special to those involved.

Ask the experts While there is a huge amount of information and advice available about weddings, there is very little specific information for mothers of the bride or groom. We have that expertise on tap with our team of staff who have not only worked with us for many years but some have been mothers of the bride and groom themselves. That wealth of experience is available for you to use – so feel free.

“Whether it is in store or online ask away.”

Whether it’s in store or online – ask away. Our facebook page is a great platform if you want to ask a question and can’t get to the shop. Whether you want to ask about suitable shapes for your body, colour matching accessories, or even what lipstick to wear? All these questions we have been asked before, and if it takes the pressure off you, we are only too happy to help.

Charity Fashion Shows and Pop Up Shop

2019 saw our record number of fashion shows, in and out of the shop, with over 50 in the year! 2020 looks set to be just as busy. New for 2019 was our ‘Pop-Up Shop’ which we took to a couple of charity fashion shows at Golf Clubs in neighbouring counties. We already have one booked for 17th November 2020! ‘Alongside our own fashion shows we have events booked for charities to help raise money for the NSPCC, Macmillan and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf,’ said Rebecca Furbank. ‘Some of these are linked with a luncheon at The George and some are at a venue of the charities choosing.’

20

‘If we can fit them into our schedule we are more than happy to help, so just ask us. We love doing them and judging by the reaction they are very well received.’

Anne Furbank To Your Door If online shopping is your only choice, because you are so busy with work and life in general, but you miss the personal advice on fit and colour then our Sales Director, Debbie Daniels, will bring a selection from Anne Furbank direct to your door. Whether it’s for work or play or even a special occasion we will discuss your needs, your budget and arrange a time and day suitable for you. You can then try everything on at home, matching up with pieces you already have in your wardrobe. Debbie will be on hand to advise on fit and styling and take away the pieces you don’t want. This service is offered within a 50-mile radius and costs £50 which is redeemable against any purchases you make.

Making a Difference The fashion industry has become more conscious of its impact on the environment and sustainable fashion has been on the minds and lips of some of the biggest global fashion labels. They are thinking about upcycling and promoting mindful purchasing. At Anne Furbank we have never been about throw away fashion. We have always bought products that we believe will have a long life in your wardrobe. However we are asking more questions of the brands that we stock so that information is available to you, for you to make informed choices about what you choose to have in your wardrobe. We all want to do our own bit to protect the environment and planet for generations to come and, while we cannot claim to be greener than green, our small conscious changes will hopefully help in some small way. If each of us made little changes – collectively it will make a big difference.

Recycling

Plastic hangers

As a company we have, for many years, had recycling in place. Our paper and cardboard is separated out from any other rubbish and is collected separately for recycling.

Many of our suppliers have now stopped using plastic hangers but where they do we collect them and they are available to anyone who is in need of hangers for their own wardrobe – so just ask. At least this way they are being reused if not recycled..

Packaging We have stopped producing plastic sale bags and now all our bags are paper which is FSC certified. The FSC seal marks wood and paper products sourced from responsible forest management to ensure the long-term survival of the forest. Strict rules govern who receives the seal, assessing not only the final product but also the manufacturing chain.

‘If each of us made small little changes – collectively it will make a big difference.’ 26

Charity clothing As many of you can testify our clothes do stand the test of time but if you are looking to come shopping and need to make some space in your wardrobe there is a charity clothing collection point here in Buckden. Just 550m from the shop, it’s a convenient drop off point.

OUR STORY

Anne Furbank Fashion

By Anne and Richard

The George Hotel and Brasserie

The Dream In 1981 we opened Anne Furbank, my little boutique. I ran the shop, Richard managed the book-keeping alongside running his farm. He was always on call for any handyman work that needed doing and that soon developed into the refurbishment of two whole rooms! Over the next 20 years Anne Furbank Fashions occupied more and more of the building that had originally been The George Coaching Inn, as the business grew exponentially. We had often expressed a wish to own The George and to thereby provide a lovely place for our customers. A place they could enjoy breakfast, a coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or indeed stay over. With a little digging we finally managed to speak to the right person from Greene King and told them we were interested. By this stage the hotel had not been loved for some time and we were really keen to restore it and put life back into it.

28

In 2003 our dreams were realised and we completed the purchase of the property in June of that year. We traded very briefly before closing it down for refurbishment. Once we had closed the door we had a ‘drink the bar dry’ party for family and friends. It was quite entertaining working through the vast array of different drinks hiding in the corners of the cellar!

The Refurbishment It took 9 months to refurbish the hotel, with the mammoth task being handed over to our younger son, Jonathan and his then fiancée, Rivka. Jonathan and Rivka met at Brighton University and had set up their own Interior Design company, Loci Interiors. It was their first major project and was certainly a baptism of fire. This was not a case of choosing new curtains and carpets. This was a Grade II listed building that needed gutting. Completely re-wiring, re-plumbing, new gas supply and

Autumn Spring 2018 2019 2020

Award-winning hotel & brasserie

ventilation, re-configuration of where the bar, reception and toilets were. The re-design of what was 16 bedrooms into 12 beautiful, spacious bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The creation of an outside seating area and the installation of atriums to let light flood in. This was before any furniture or fabrics could be chosen. There were some lovely discoveries such as the parquet flooring which remains today and fireplaces which were restored as features in the bedrooms. Jonathan and Rivka put their heart and soul into the place, choosing absolutely everything down to the cutlery. We were super proud with what they achieved.

“There were some lovely discoveries such as the parquet flooring which remains today.”

The Opening

The Team

It seemed fitting that the hotel should open on the same date that the shop had opened some 23 years previously. That was our target and it was literally all hands on deck, even on the morning of the opening, trying to get the last of the painting done. We made it and on 31st March 2004 we opened the bar and brasserie. The rooms followed in July of that year.

We’ve been very lucky over the years to work with an amazing team. Some of whom have been with us a very long time. We’ve had births, marriages and sadly, this year the death of Clare. We’ve seen young 16 year olds develop confidence and return to us throughout their university studies. And we’ve been lucky enough to have a core team of great people who do the hard work on our behalf.

Having lived and breathed the refurbishment of the hotel for all those months it seemed only fitting that Jonathan and Rivka got married there. So in the August of that year they did and it was so special to the whole family.

Whoever takes on the hotel would be hard pushed to find a better team.

A New Chapter

“The decision to sell the hotel didn’t come easy but things move on.”

Owning the hotel has been a privilege. There is an amazing synergy with the two businesses and as a destination in its own right it is enjoyed by business people, wedding parties, diners and party goers. The decision to sell the hotel didn’t come easy but things move on and we feel the time has come to find another owner for this historic building and business. Someone who will continue to give it the care and attention that we have.

Brunches Boom People enjoying brunch has certainly grown in popularity over the last decade but the word brunch appeared in print for the first time over 120 years ago.

“The latest ‘fad’ is to issue invitations for a meal called ‘brunch...a repast at 11 o’clock a.m.,” a column in the New Oxford, an old Pennsylvania newspaper, explained in 1896. This was long before people were enjoying Eggs Benedict or Avocado on Toast. While we have always served the traditional breakfast late into the morning at The George, since introducing our new Brunch Menu last year, the popularity in people enjoying a late morning meal at the weekend has grown hugely.

‘It’s a very sociable meal,’ said General Manager Richard O’Leary. ‘It’s popularity at the weekend appeals because it is much more relaxed and somehow sparks conversation.’

“With a bit of fuel inside people it may boost the productivity.”

‘We have also seen an increase in business brunches during the week. Meetings conducted over brunch and I guess with a bit of fuel inside people it may boost the productivity.’

Assistant Manager, Katie, said, ‘It was lovely to do and really helped people visualise what we can create. Even simple things, like how a dressed table can look, made it easier for couples to see themselves here.’

‘We are fortunate at The George as we can offer a truly bespoke wedding. It is such a lovely building so you immediately have a wonderful atmosphere and then the individual touches with food, drinks and décor make each wedding we do totally unique.’
