Editors Letter It’s a bumper edition of the magazine this autumn but with Killing Eve, Love Island and Poldark all over you will have plenty of time to thumb through and feel fully informed as to what is new to fashion this season. Whether the programmes have had you glued, or not, the influence they have had on the fashion industry has been quite remarkable. Don’t worry we will not be bringing you sheer trousers for the autumn, we will leave that for those young enough to still hit the beach clubs! You will, however, find a hint of romantic soft flowing shirts (aka Poldark) coming through this season. Probably the most striking TV fashion moments have been given to hit woman, Villanelle, in Killing Eve. The fashion has featured in Vogue, Grazia, Town and Country Magazine as well as the national newspapers. While some of her outfits have been outlandish the fashion industry has been pairing it down to a more wearable look. You will see sharp suiting, velvet jackets and trench coats, all favourites of Villanelle’s styling in the collections here at Anne Furbank. You can see what is new to us on page 10-11. Many of you travel some distance to visit the shop, making a day of it and enjoying lunch at The George but I 4

did wonder how many of you had explored further than the high street when you’ve been visiting Buckden. It is a surprisingly big village so the feature on page 28-29 may give you reason to stay just a little longer!

Letter from

Annie

It’s been quite a year for me so far with my British Empire Medal ceremony in April and then going to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party in May. I am still a little surprised but delighted at having been presented with such an honour. One of the reason for receiving the medal was because of the large amounts of money I have raised for charity and although the challenges may have been mine, your generous support has helped me along the way. I am still lucky enough to be able to run and I do feel that I have one more marathon left in me so I have been training hard to run the Yorkshire Marathon on October 20th. I am once again doing this for charity and you can read all about it on page 18. I have set myself a big target but I am hoping, with your support, I will get there. Please do give generously and I will continue to train hard over the coming weeks to make sure I complete the 26.2 miles. So if you see me hobbling down the catwalk you know why!

“I have set myself a big target but I am hoping, with your support, I will get there.”

brand Spotlight

Brand Focus We have been stocking Marc Cain for 15 years. The first buy was after seeing the collection in Germany in an incredible showroom that was loud, full of colour and quite different to any other showrooms we had been in. Becky and Annie were in Dusseldorf for five days as one of the world’s biggest fashion exhibitions used to take place there. Along a street near to the exhibition there were a number of fashion brands who took over showrooms. ‘I had heard about the brand and wanted to take a look,’ said Becky. ‘Both Annie and I went along and it was almost like walking into a vibrant art exhibition. The place was vast and quite disjointed but looking beyond the spectacle of it all, the product looked great, and it was a new look that we hadn’t had in the shop before.’ Fifteen years later we are one of the biggest stockist of Marc Cain in the UK. Debbie Daniels fell in love with the brand and became part of the brand buying team with Becky. ‘Debbie has nurtured the brand, understands the brand and as many of you know helped you build your own Marc Cain wardrobe!’ The key to its success is a combination of quality, unique design and the ability to update the looks with it each season.

your jewellery

Caring for

Costume jewellery is fun, unique and a great way to update your wardrobe. It will not last forever but you can help it live longer by taking care of it. If you follow these guidelines you will have a long and joyful time together. Fashion jewellery does not like to shower or be sprayed with perfume. It does not like to be slathered in body cream so put your cream on first, wash your hands and make your jewellery the last item you put on. Sport is not its thing so leave it at home because it definitely doesn’t like to get sweaty. Silver, brass or gold polish is too harsh for costume jewellery, in fact it’s not fond of anything abrasive so if it needs a clean, soap and water is good and dry with a soft cloth. Don’t do the washing up or laundry wearing it – again those harsh chemicals will damage it. Love your jewellery and it will love you back.

What to carry

this Autumn Handbags are a great way to update your wardrobe instantly and over the years bag designers have become braver and more creative, not only with styles, but also with the fabrics used. The Bulaggi collection this season covers it all. Fashion colours of mustard and oxblood. Animal prints from giraffe to snake. Textures making bags super tactile like faux fur and soft suedette. With prices from £58 you can’t go wrong.

My Last Marathon by Anne Furbank

On Sunday 20th October this year, I will be running the York Marathon. There are two main reasons for deciding to run 26.2 miles at the age of 71 years and 5 months! Firstly, I feel very lucky to still be able to do so and, secondly, the charity for which I shall be running is very close to my heart. Motor Neurone Disease is the cruellest of diseases and I have watched, close at hand, how it debilitates and affects the individual. I have a dear friend who is suffering with MND at the moment and I am in awe of his stoicism. He can no longer walk unaided or talk and has great difficulty swallowing but is able to communicate with the use of a computerised voice producer, which he controls with eye movements. It speaks with his own voice, which was prerecorded when MND was diagnosed, and he has certainly not lost his sense of humour! Sadly, however, everything else is closing down.

‘They need all the help they can get to find a cure.’ The other person who has inspired me to run for MND is Doddie Weir, a Scottish farmer and former professional rugby player. To be struck down with such a dreadful condition as MND is nothing less than a tragedy. Despite his disability, Doddie still retains an incredible zest for life – and, because of his disability, he has started a foundation to do more research into controlling and eradicating MND. I have been very lucky but I do not take good health for granted, so I want to raise as much as I can for MND Research. They need all the help they can get to find a cure. Running 26.2 miles and a few hours of pain is nothing compared to the suffering of the victims of Motor Neurone Disease.

If you wish to support me and help me reach my goal of £10,000 you can donate online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/AnneFurbank2. Or send a cheque made payable to MNDA and send it c/o Anne Furbank Fashions Ltd, 41 High Street, Buckden, St Neots PE19 5WZ.

Garden Party As you read in our last magazine Anne was the worthy recipient of the British Empire Medal. Anne was presented with her medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Julie Spence OBE, QPM at the Guildhall in Cambridge in April. This was followed by an invitation to one of the Queen’s Garden Party’s at Buckingham Palace in May.

Anne chose Paule Ka outfits for both occasions and topped them off with Darcie Mae hats. 19

They are still spotted as beach bags, gym bags and some of you ladies are conscientiously returning to the shop, with them, to carry your purchases home. Go Explore There’s more to Buckden than meets the eye. Those of you who are local will be aware that the village stretches far beyond the high street where our shop and hotel sits. But there are many of you that travel a distance to visit us and it really is worth spending a little more time in this wonderful village.

Stay at The George Rooms available from £95 (based on two people sharing) inclusive of breakfast.

On the High Street itself there are two hotels, a public house, a lingerie shop, small clothing shop, small convenience store and a wonderful butchers which is definitely worth a visit – try their Buckden special sausages!

28

Venture a little further north up the High Street and behind the redbrick wall you will find Buckden Towers (or Buckden Palace), an old manor that was held by the Bishop of Lincoln. It is now a conference centre but you can wander through the gates into the grounds and even book hour long guided tours of the gardens and buildings.

Autumn 2019

Opposite the shop you can head down Church Street (there are three churches in Buckden serving Catholic, Christian and Methodist beliefs) towards the river, you will pass a specialist vinyl record shop, a hairdressers and beauticians before reaching the village green where there is a very welcoming village store, pharmacy, hairdressers and barbers as well as a Chinese take away!

Buckden Marina is less than a mile from the village, 92 acres of countryside on the banks of the River Ouse, and Grafham Water (the eighth largest reservoir in the country) just a couple of miles away, you can envelope yourself in nature in a matter of minutes.

For a little village in Cambridgeshire there is plenty to explore. Make the most of your next visit and do a little exploring. Or stay a couple of days and stay overnight at The George, rooms available from ÂŁ95 (based on two people sharing) inclusive of breakfast.

Our Gift To You We are delighted to have partnered up with Castillo Perelada to bring you a fabulous celebratory gift for our Autumn Fashion Week. Whether you have enjoyed a glass at one of our fashion events or had one as an aperitif before dining it will have brought some sparkle to your palate. But there is a great deal of history behind the estate in Spain which shows the true passion and love that goes into producing this delicious Cava.

‘Over the decades the wines of Castillo Perelada have been served on the tables of many historical figures.’

More about the winery Wine has been made at Castillo Perelada since the Middle Ages but in recent times it was the purchase of the castle in 1923, by Miguel Mateu, that brought wine production back to life. Miguel Mateu was born in 1898, son of Damian Mateu, the founder of an automobile company. Miguel was active in business, cultural and political life, being at different times Mayor of Barcelona, and Spanish Ambassador of Spain in Paris. When Miguel bought the castle site his dream was to revitalise the traditions of the area. His passion for the arts and collecting over the years turned the castle site into a private cultural haven. His son in law took over the business and was determined to continue the legacy and to place Perelada on the map of being one of the best wine producers in Spain. He succeeded, along with opening up the cultural centre which now makes up a museum which can be visited. Now joined by a third generation, Javier Suqué Mateu, who has committed to producing quality wines, planting and purchasing new vineyards and creating a great technical team. Over the decades the wines of Castillo Perelada have been served on the tables of many historical figures, having had the honour of being selected for banquets of great importance such as the coronation of King Juan Carlos I, the weddings of King Balduino and Queen Fabiola of Belgium and the Prince and Princess of Asturias, and for official visits from United States presidents.

Perelada wine dinner Perelada is not all about Cava. Slate slopes and sandy valleys allow the vineyard to grow grapes that in turn produce wines which are complex and full of character. To try more than the Cava join us and Philip Amps at our Perelada dinner, Friday 20th September. Wines from the Castillo Perelada will be matched with a four course dinner for £45pp.

Tales of

ghostly appearances It is not suprising, given the age of the building, that there have been reports of ghostly activity in The George. Being situated on what was the Old Great North Road it was a popular stopping point for many travellers and it has been well reported that among those was the brutal villain, Dick Turpin. There is a wooden hatch on the corridor outside the bedrooms that he is said to have used when he needed to make a quick exit. In the past staff and guests have reported ghostly goings on with the apparition of a man wearing a tricorn hat and black coat – witnesses claiming he was gliding along the first floor corridor. There have also been reports of a women suddenly appearing on the main staircase. 32

‘Since we bought The George in 2003 I haven’t seen or heard anything, although there is one room in the shop, which used to be part of the hotel, that definitely has a different atmosphere.’ said Rebecca Furbank.

In 1986 a guest claimed he’d been kept awake by banging on his door and someone repeating the name Bella, when he opened the door to his room there was nobody around. When he returned to his bed the banging and shouting resumed. This was reported in the local press.

‘Myths, tall tales or true ghostly goings on – we will leave that for you to decide but rest assured it’s a friendly bunch at The George.’
