SUMMER NEWS 2017
PEDI TIME Sandals are here - it is time for a pedicure. After months of hibernation it is time to get those twinkle toes twinkling.
WARDROBE STAPLES Once you get your staples right the rest of your wardrobe comes together with ease.
Editor’s letter Summer time and the living is easy … that’s how the lyrics go and that is the way I intend it to be this summer. Easy doesn’t mean lazing around, life will certainly be busy but there seems to be more hours in the day during the summer than the winter. Lighter evenings make it is easier to pop in to see friends after work, to enjoy the garden and have the pleasure of walking the dog in daylight. It is certainly easier to get up at 6am and feel like it is not the middle of the night.
You may be tempted with a great piece but do read our article on wardrobe staples to make sure you get those cracked first.
There is also the excitement of holidays looming and filling in the gaps in the holiday wardrobe, as it is always nice to pack something new in the suitcase! Will it be a maxi dress from delightfully new Beatrice B, a piece from the Tropical Vibes collection from Marc Cain or the ever packable Joseph Ribkoff? I know one thing for sure – a pair of MK sandals will be coming with me!
I am looking forward to the summer, I hope you are too.
We have a new menu at The George full of seasonal foods and some exciting new takes on family favourites. We have our annual Champagne offer to celebrate our birthday month in April and we are thrilled to offer an English sparkling wine to our list this summer, full of flavour and perfect for a summer’s day.
This summer I will be: • Wearing colours from the sea. • Packing something new for my holiday. • Enjoying Portuguese cuisine at our themed night in April. • Paying a visit to David Austin Rose Gardens.

Letter from Annie
he celebrations have started! The night before Richard’s 70th birthday we had drinks in the shop with the girls. Richard was in his element with his harem around him. On his actual birthday we had the most wonderful evening at the George. The food was out of this world. It was a joy working with the team to put together a menu and they didn’t disappoint. The magnums of wine looked impressive on the table and were enjoyed by all! We’ve got a trip to London planned, a big trip on our narrow boat and a family holiday in Cornwall to look forward to – all as part of the birthday celebrations. I have a feeling that this could be a year of birthday celebrations!
In amongst it all we have been training for our family challenge. A team triathlon. Some of you may know I have been tempted to do a triathlon myself but have been finding the disciplines, other than running, quite a challenge so when the opportunity to do a team triathlon came about I thought it was a brilliant idea. I love my running, Richard loves his cycling and my youngest son, Jonathan loves his swimming. So in May, with a combined age of 183, we will be taking part in the Grafman, a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run all based at Grafham Water. Wish us luck and I will let you know how we get on. In the meantime I will see you at our fashion shows in the shop and no doubt the themed evening at The George.

Once you get your staples right the rest of your wardrobe comes together with ease.
ix it up – don’t be afraid to mix collections, it is worth spending the money on items that you are going to make work hard for you but you can opt for less expensive items as support or finishing touch. Buy multiples – if you love a particular piece and it is a really good fit then buy two of it or look for different colours in the same style. This works particularly well for basics, crop jeans, trousers or simple t-shirts. You will regret not getting the extra pair of navy trousers when you have worn out your first pair and they are no longer available. Buy for who you are – remember who you are and what you do. If your lifestyle is more casual then make sure your clothes work for you as you will get maximum use from them. If you have a lot of functions to go to think about how those formal outfits can be transformed using different accessories. Get real about your size – we come in all different shapes and sizes and we need to delight in that. Whether you are 5ft or 6ft, a size 8 or size 20 we can all still look great, we just need to dress for our own bodies and realise that some things need curves to make them look great, others need height and some a more petite form.
It’s all in the detail – staple doesn’t have to mean basic. A white shirt can be a staple piece but the detailing adds the magic. Look out for the magic and you will find a great wardrobe staple.

hat a great fashion invention the dress is and what a great job designers have done over the years to broaden the horizon of the dress. A dress can satisfy almost every occasion from wedding dress, ball dress, work dress, day dress and beach dress. Long or short, sassy or demure you can wear one from the age of 1 to 100. We say Yes to the Dress!
SAY YES TO THE DRESS
We have dresses for many occasions at Anne Furbank - although they are restricted to adults as we haven’t ventured into children’s wear. For occasions head to the brands of Paule Ka, Teresa Ripoll and Aideen Bodkin, for something still a little smarter, but not specifically occasionwear, look at the dresses from Marc Cain, Joseph Ribkoff and Michael Kors and if you want something more sporty Lexington and Oui have some great cotton and jersey dresses that will be just perfect. Dresses are virtually a whole outfit in one – all you need are some accessories and you are away. With designers now putting sleeves into a lot of dresses you can disguise
Summer 2017 the tops of your arms. And do keep in the back of your mind that although we all refer to the wobbly bits as chicken wings we do not go around flapping like a chicken all the time to show them off! As with all clothes, it is finding the right shape and fit for you.You can wear a dress if you are heavier on the bottom than the top and vice versa, you do not have to be straight up and down. It is all in the fit and shape.

June Black and white doesn’t have to be kept for winter and, in fact, by having a break away from it in early spring it can be surprisingly sharp and refreshing for the summer. Say hello, Say goodbye
fter 20 years working for Anne Furbank, in May we say goodbye to Julie Bevan who will enjoy a well-earned retirement. We thank her for many years of hard work, her gentle nature with all our customers, her creative ability with our window displays and for being such a joy to have on the team. Alexa Jones (as some of you may have noticed) has taken time off to welcome a new bundle of joy into the world. Alexa won’t be having such a relaxing time as Julie but will be enjoying spending time with a new member of the family. As one member of staff leaves we welcome in a new one, Karen Stump, who joined the team in February, has settled in with remarkable ease. Being a previous customer made her feel at home instantly and we are delighted to have her as part of the team. Julie Bevan
English sparkling wine is being pitched against champagne and has, in some cases, won over the wine experts in a blind tasting. It is not a surprise as the grounds and climate in which it is grown, mirrors that of the Champagne region. Exton Park is one such vineyard in Hampshire that has cultivated its vines over the last 10 years and based its grape varieties on those that are used in Champagne – chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier.
We are delighted to introduce one of the Exton Park sparkling wines this May. It is a perfect accompaniment to cream tea, a bowl of summer berries or on its own – just wait for the sun to come out and take a seat on our patio to really enjoy the moment. Exton Park sparkling wine is £40 a bottle, a glass for £8.50 or a cream tea for two with a glass of sparkling wine £50.
Theme Nights A perfect excuse to catch up with friends and try different cuisines from around the world at one of The George’s theme nights.

erks of the job definitely include tasting champagne to find the perfect one for our birthday month celebration. General Manager, Richard and Assistant Manager, Ryan, got the job and have found one that you will adore. It is a true champagne with a history that spans over 100 years. Lallier champagne is made in the village of Ay, one of seventeen villages in the Champagne region to be classified as Grand Cru and the champagne we have selected for our birthday month is built on that heritage and prestige.
Lallier R012, the R is a reference to Recolte, the French word for harvest, the numbers denoting a specific year. R012 means that this champagne is based on the 2012 vintage. We will of course be offering this, for the whole month of April, at the special price of £8 per glass or £36 for the bottle. Celebrations are what champagne was made for – happy birthday to us.
