Doncaster’s FREE Festival of Art and Performance

BER 2017

Right Up Our Street is all about people in Doncaster seeing, sharing, choosing, and creating great art and culture.

Welcome to the #DNweekeND 2017!

The DNweekeND is part of Right Up Our Street, Doncaster's Creative People and Places project, led by a Consortium of arts organisations and funded by Arts Council England through the National Lottery until 2019.

We hope you have a great time over the weekend. We think that #DoncasterisGreat and we want the DNweekeND to be a celebration of this- a colourful, family-friendly event that everyone is welcome to.

Visit www.rightupourstreet.org.uk

DONCASTER VOLUNTARY ARTS NETWORK

For the second year, we’re thrilled to be part of the Without Walls Associate Touring Network, which means we can bring some of the best outdoor arts performances on the UK circuit right now to Doncaster for audiences to enjoy for free! Alongside this we’re giving local artists and creatives a platform to showcase their talents to a wider Doncaster audience. We programmed all the great activities with our team of Community Associates who represent different areas of Doncaster. They are the backbone of Right Up Our Street and create amazing cultural experiences in their communities throughout the year.

DNweekeND is part of the St Leger Festival Week- ten whole days packed out with activities to suit everyone from live music to family events. Find out about the programme at www.visitdoncaster.com

2

The DNweekeND is a member of the Without Walls Associate Touring Network, a group of festivals working together to extend the reach and benefits of the existing Without Walls programme in areas where there is low engagement with the arts, bringing high-quality outdoor work to diverse audiences across England. www.withoutwalls.uk.com/atn

There is great momentum behind culture and the arts in Doncaster at the moment and we’re very proud to be a part of that movement. We’re kicking off the St Leger Festival Week again- with so much to see and do in Doncaster it’s an exciting time of the year. So, we invite you to pull up a deckchair, relax and enjoy your very own festival of art and performance! Best Wishes, Sally Lockey, Right Up Our Street Project Director. #DNweekeND Rightupourstreet.org.uk

Slowdown Sunday (all day) Waterdale

Sir Nigel Gresley Square

The Aperitif by Wet Picnic From the fantastically bizarre minds of Wet Picnic (The Lift) comes ‘The Aperitif’; an eccentric take on a silent disco combined with a communal experience and thought provoking satire. A mix of surreal, physical and downright silly comedy! In preparation for their annual ball, Lord Gredus, has decided to offer some of his potential guests the chance to have a taste of the high life, a sneak peak of power, class and indulgence.

Street Theatre Saturday- 1.30pm, 6pm Sunday- 2pm (45 mins) Sir Nigel Gresley Square

His faithful staff however have other ideas in mind! So in a pre-determined location, guests are invited to attend the Gredus Aperitif and join the French waiters for a dinner to remember. 6 *times and venues are subject to change- please check on the day for any changes.

Returning to Doncaster, after delighting audiences at the Delicious Doncaster Festival. Three hilarious bellhops invite you to step inside their roving lift, giving you a surreal theatrical experience that you won’t forget. Each lift button chosen triggers a riotous scene or event which is performed for both the audience member in The Lift and those on the outside looking in. 8

Project_Vee by Circus Geeks X PanGottic Juggling meets roulette wheel: danger, skill and unpredictable moments. Project_Vee is a nod to a Soviet-era circus act, remixed for the 21st century. When steel, concrete and motors meet, Project_Vee takes juggling to a different dimension. A 25-minute juggling duet based around a spinning seesaw structure, raising up to 3m high.

Dance Saturday 2.30pm, 5.30pm Sunday 1pm, 2.30pm (25 min) Sir Nigel Gresley Square

Lance Moi en L’air by Joli Vyann & L’Eolienne Dance meets circus in this playfully acrobatic piece which translates in English to ‘Throw me in the air’. Two performers meet and take you on an energetic physical journey. A captivating performance asks, can we be strong whilst relaxed? Heavy whilst light? Grounded whilst levitated? Commissioned by Without Walls, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea and Dance Village.

The Awakening by Stopgap Dance

Dance Saturday 1.00pm, 4pm Sunday-1.30pm, 3.30pm (25 mins) Sir Nigel Gresley Square

An exhilarating dance piece involving four characters trapped in a strange but mesmerising ritual. Choreographed by learning disabled dance artist Chris Pavia, The Awakening is performed by four disabled and non-disabled dancers. A quiet but simmering disruption in an outdoor space. 11

Roadworks by Etta Ermini Dance Theatre

Dance/theatre Sunday- 12pm, 2pm, 3pm (25 mins) Waterdale

A quirky and humorous engagement between a dancer and a BMX rider. The dance theatre piece incorporates acrobatics, B-Boying, contemporary dance, BMX-ing, music, clowning and physical theatre. A piece which is sure to enthuse all ages and backgrounds with its comedic narrative and high-octane movement vocabulary. 12

Walkabout theatre Saturday 1pm, 3pm and 5pm Sunday 12pm, 1.30pm and 3pm Sir Nigel Gresley Square

Sense-O-Matic by Same Difference Sense-O-Matic is a walkabout, much-talked-about, splendorous, spectacular, scientific discovery machine! Same Difference’s Victorian-inspired invention is a fantastical object, created by eccentric technologists to aid them in their endeavours ... to record observations of their immediate environment in this wonderful world of ours! 13

Picture Doncaster by Les Monaghan Picture Doncaster. How do you see it? What sums up Donny? The Minster, Frenchgate, the racecourse? A portrait of Donny the Dog? The markets, the high street, the people? What’s important? The town, the river, the villages, the whole borough? History; the railways, the pits, the plant? Or right now? Or the future? What four images would you show to a stranger to describe Doncaster? How should we represent ourselves? 16
