Our Program Early childhood is a time of wonder, enthusiasm and boundless energy! Our program engages children in exciting learning activities that balance their social, emotional and intellectual needs. Out unique approach combines a dynamic introduction to academics with opportunities to socialize, explore, create and play! Our Philosophy Our goal is to encourage young children to explore, discover, and enjoy new challenges. We believe children are curious, capable, and ready to learn at an early age. Our balanced program inspires children of all levels by enhancing their social-emotional, intellectual, and physical development. We dedicate ourselves to helping each child discover his or her intrinsic talents in a stimulating, nurturing, and creative environment. Inspiring a Love of Learning All children love to learn. Sometimes it is hard to know what they should learn, when they should learn it, and how it should be taught. We have spent over 35 years developing an early learning program that is finely tuned to help each child maximize his or her innate ability to learn. Our programs are committed to excellence and joy in learning. Fun and Learning for your Preschool Age Child At Landmark, students, staff and parents are all an important part of our educational community. In our classrooms we create play-based, structured learning environments for one through five-year–olds. We combine an early introduction to academics with opportunities to socialize and develop life skills. Concepts such as colors, shapes, letters and numbers are introduced through songs, stories, sensory activities, art and free play. Character building, positive values, and respect for others are essential components of each day. A nurturing environment and low student to teacher ratios ensures the care and attention your child needs to blossom. Accreditation Landmark Preschool is accredited by the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS).

Ones Program Curriculum Landmark Preschool’s Stay and Play for Ones program focuses on the social development of the child. Our teachers facilitate social interactions between the children and help them learn to join in classroom activities. Daily activities are designed to strengthen their language skills, as well as to develop fine and gross motor skills. Learning to separate from parents, be a part of a group, take turns, share with friends and use classroom materials appropriately are important skills for one-year-olds to begin to learn. Lots of stories, games and sensory opportunities will help your little one develop in to a terrific two-year-old. Our Classrooms Our classrooms are large and bright and divided into activity areas so your children can learn and grow. The class size is limited to 8 children with two teachers to supervise and help children to explore. Discovery Time Discovery time allows children to explore the classroom materials at their own pace and is important in helping your child make a good transition from home to school. Activities include play dough, manipulative materials, a dramatic play area, a sensory table, cars and trucks, and building blocks. Stories Sharing stories through books and flannel board are favorite activities for Ones. We know that in addition to being fun, these stories are a great way to teach important skills. Children increase their understanding of language through stories, as well as their ability to comprehend. Important concepts such as patterns, rhymes and sequencing are also introduced through stories. Art Art provides sensory exploration as children experience the feel, sight and scent of paint, finger paint, glue, modeling dough, etc. Your child will enjoy the process of creation using a variety of materials. Children enjoy these creative activities, which often involve messy mediums. Please dress children accordingly. Recess Children enjoy outdoor time on our playground each day, weather permitting, building and developing large motor skills and coordination. On inclement days, we may use parachute play and other games with the children to encourage movement while indoors.

Twos Program Curriculum Landmark Preschool’s Twos program focuses on the social development of the child. Learning to separate from parents, be a part of a group, take turns, share with friends, and use classroom materials appropriately are important skills for two-year-olds to master. Our teachers facilitate social interactions between the children, and help them learn to join in classroom activities. Daily activities are designed to help children develop appropriate use of language to communicate with teachers and peers, as well as to develop fine and gross motor skills. Children are exposed to colors, shapes, letters and numbers through play, art, stories and songs. Helping children develop selfconfidence and a sense of autonomy through mastery of toilet training and other selfcare skills is also an important part of our program. Our Classrooms Our classrooms are large and bright and divided into activity areas so our children can learn and grow. The class size is limited to 16 children with four teachers to supervise and help children to explore. Discovery Time Discovery time allows children to explore the classroom materials at their own pace and is important in helping your child make a good transition from home to school. Activities include play dough, drawing, puzzles, manipulative materials, a dramatic play area, a sensory table, cars and trucks, and building blocks. Circle Time The class comes together each day to participate in songs, finger plays, letter sounds, special bag and games. Creative movement activities such as dance, marching band, and parachute play promote coordination. Listening skills are also part of our day. Stories Sharing stories through books and flannel board are favorite activities for twos.

Projects may be open-ended or may relate to our themes. Children enjoy these creative activities, which often involve paint, glue, etc. Please dress children accordingly. Recess Children enjoy outdoor time on our playground each day, weather permitting, building and developing large motor skills and coordination. On inclement days, we may use parachute play and other games with the children to encourage movement while indoors.

Threes, Fours & Fives Program Curriculum Free Choice Time All of our days start with free choice time where your child can try different games, sensory activities or make their own fun. Often times you can find children cooking in the play kitchen, painting at the easel or building on the carpet with blocks of all shapes and sizes. Recess Our students have play time outside every day. Cold weather, hot weather, even misty days allow us the opportunity to move our bodies and practice our motor skills, learn cooperative play and have some laughs. All of our playgrounds have rubber surfaces and are developmentally appropriate for each age group. Themes Every month to six weeks we focus our learning around a new theme, such as the farm, solar system, dinosaurs, nursery rhymes or ocean life. We incorporate these topics in all of our activities and share fun facts and concepts to help our students explore the world around them. Character Development Respect, cooperation, patience and kindness are very important qualities and our students are encouraged and supported to develop into the best people they can be. World Language Most children are learning English as their primary language. In our programs, we provide them with the opportunity to be exposed to Spanish as a second language. Songs, games and interactive activities that fit in with the current theme help to share this language and encourage our students to practice and build vocabulary a new vocabulary. Technology Our classrooms are equipped with the latest technology allowing our students to expand their learning through various thoughtful and developmentally appropriate media. We use Smart Boards, iMac computers, iPads and digital cameras in our classrooms to compliment the curriculum. Art Exposure to various art mediums and projects builds eye - hand coordination, promotes spatial awareness, encourages sensory plays and reinforces concepts from our classrooms. To children, the process of creation is the most important part of their art experience. Our students love to paint and create and we love to display their work!

Science Preschoolers are naturally curious and our programs allow students to wonder, ask questions and seek answers about the natural world through observations, experimentation, use of equipment, collecting and interpreting data. Music & Movement Our music program incorporates the use of both new and familiar songs, tunes, echo lyrics, rhythm instruments and movement to learn the patterns of song. Class themes are reinforced as children have fun learning key musical terms and principles. Physical Education Moving your body is an important skill and our physical education program will help your child develop large motor skills and coordination through various locomotor exercises (walking, running, hopping, etc) as well as activities that focus on eye – hand and eye – foot coordination. As your child develops over the years, we are able to scaffold emerging motor skills and incorporate advanced activities. Handwriting We are proud to continue using a therapeutically designed handwriting program in our threes through fives classrooms. This program uses wooden pieces, chalkboards and dough, as well as tracing activities, to support fine motor skills. All of our students write or draw journal entries over the course of the year, documenting their fine motor growth. In our fives program, our students integrate a poetry binder and implement the sentence structure component of the handwriting program. Math Math skills are developed every day as our children cook, build towering structures or scoop sand in the sensory table. Our children learn to recognize numerals zero to ten in our threes program, later mastering zero to twenty in the fours classes. Children in the fives program count to 100 using ones and tens. Graphing, patterning and sorting are skills that we practice using manipulatives and interacting with our Smart Boards. Literacy All children are readers. Recognizing and supporting the skills that take your child from an emergent reader to a fluent and expressive one is a joyful part of the Landmark experience. Starting in our threes program we sing songs and play games that help children learn that every letter makes a special sound. We encourage children to learn that sound with and without picture cues as well as connect the uppercase and lowercase relationship. We continue to build this skill and in the fours program we introduce consonant – vowel combinations, word families and short vowel words when each child is ready for the challenge. Our phonics based reading program builds decoding skills, giving children a foundation from which to decipher new words. The phonics approach, combined with an awareness of other skills, such as picture and content clues, sequencing and sight words, gives children a variety of strategies to approach reading with confidence.

Applying to Landmark Preschool Thank you for selecting Landmark Preschool for your child! We hope that this checklist will guide you through our admissions procedures. We encourage families to begin this process in the Fall for the following school year. 1. Visitation - Please contact Kimberly Swabsin, Associate Director of Admissions, at 203-544-8393 or KSwabsin@LandmarkPreschool.org to schedule a private tour of our school. 2. Application – Apply online at www.landmarkpreschool.org/apply and pay the $50.00 Application Fee. Children applying to our Four and Five-year-old programs will be contacted to schedule a brief visit to Landmark. These children will meet with an administrator or a member of our teaching staff to assess their readiness for our program. Assessments take approximately twenty-five minutes and must be completed before an enrollment agreement can be sent. 3. Enrollment – Online Enrollment for Returning Families – current students, sibling applicants, former families and Ones program participants – occurs in early December for the following school year. The deadline for Returning Families to complete their Online Enrollment Agreement and submit the $1,500 deposit to secure placement for the following year is in January. New Families entering Landmark next fall can begin to enroll in January. Online Enrollment Agreements can only be emailed to families that have completed the application process (including the assessment for 4 and 5 year olds). New Families can complete their Online Enrollment Agreements and submit the $1,500 deposit in January. 4. Placement - Landmark Preschool uses a first-come, first-served policy when placing students in classes; therefore, timely completion of your child’s Online Enrollment Agreement and payment of the deposit will increase your chances of securing placement and/or the schedule of your choice. If the program or schedule is not available, the admissions office will contact you to discuss options and availabilities. 5. Class Assignment – Classroom assignments are distributed in August. In keeping with past practice, we are unable to accept placement requests. As there are many factors that determine class make up, we ask that you rely on our teachers’ and administrators’ expertise to create the best learning environment for your child.
