Get Ready for Outdoor Living!
The warmer weather is finally here and Islanders are once again discovering the joy of being outdoors. Whether your home has a small apartment balcony, a set of front steps, a back deck or a large patio, it’s time to ready your outside space for another season as a comfy, welcoming extension to your abode. There are so many options! A few items that can really define an outdoor space include;
door spaces, they act as sound barriers too if neighbours are close at hand
• Outdoor furniture of aluminum, wood or resin wicker covered with comfy cushions of colourful, all-weather fabric is an invitation just waiting to be accepted!
• Balconies can be beautiful! There are no end of decor and privacy options, from bamboo fencing and cloth curtains to screens, slats and faux and real greenery. Invest in a comfy chair and little side table and you’ve got a cool retreat for hot summer days
• Ambient lighting is key to keeping your outside space welcoming come evening. String lights, lanterns and candles are all great options: citronella candles have the added benefit of keeping mosquitoes at bay as well • Nothing draws people together like a warm fire and you don’t need a big backyard to have one: there are an endless array of attractive, tabletop fire bowls, fire pits and fire pots available • Lush greenery, lattice, and wind and sun shields not only provide privacy and beauty to out-
• If your exterior space is somewhat protected from the elements, large planters and outdoor carpeting can be used to great effect to define your seating area • If new patio furniture isn’t in your budget, use what you’ve already got and just add a few colourful throw cushions! A fresh coat of paint can work wonders too, as can small accessories like lanterns on a side table. Have a warm throw

Time to Hit the Road! The weather is getting better and driving enthusiasts may be experiencing the urge to get the rubber on the road. But summer isn’t here yet! Help is at hand: if you feel the need to travel but don’t have a holiday booked at this time of year, there are several great Vancouver Island road trips that can be enjoyed in the course of an afternoon or over a few days. The Pacific Marine Circle Route takes drivers from the Victoria area to Port Renfrew and through the Cowichan Valley. Featuring beach pull-outs, plenty of cafes, ocean views, rushing waterfalls and cultural highlights like the world-famous murals of Chemainus, this route is hugely popular with visitors and locals alike. Another great weekend trip on the Island is from Victoria to Tofino/Ucluelet. This trek takes drivers from an urban landscape through rolling countryside and old growth forest and finishes with the wild beauty of two coastal communities and Pacific Rim National Park. Fabulous vistas, great eateries and outstanding art galleries await those who venture to the West coast of the Island.
If you haven’t much time to spare, consider driving the Oceanside Route from Nanaimo to Campbell River: it’s a pleasant day trip boasting numerous quaint, beachfront towns to visit. Along your way consider popping into Milner Gardens and Woodlands to enjoy the spring blooms. Finally, Nanaimo to Port Hardy is a route requiring several days of travel to fully appreciate. This trek takes you into the dense forest of North Vancouver Island, with charming towns hidden just off the main highway including Telegraph Cove where travellers can experience a bear tour or whalewatching trip. A visit to Cape Scott Provincial Park and hike along the North Coast Trail completes this adventurous outing. For more information on these travel routes and other fabulous Vancouver Island destinations worth hopping in your car for, please visit vancouverisland.travel/road-trips.

PET TIP Myths and Reality - Ticks Ticks are a reality on Vancouver Island. It used to be that seeing a tick was a rarity, but we are seeing more and more of these little pests every year. They carry several nasty diseases that can spread to your pet, and to humans. If you are finding ticks on your pets, you need to be checking yourself for ticks as well. Ticks come in different sizes. The size varies with the species, sex and lifestage of the tick. Ticks start life as eggs, then go through several sheds of their outer shell, called an exoskeleton. Younger ticks are quite small, often only 1-3 mm. Young ticks

feed on blood in the same way as adults, they do not get larger as they feed, and they carry the same diseases that their adult counter parts do. Males are also quite small. They tend to be from 2-4 mm and are usually found attached near to the female. I suspect this is the source of the myth of “leaving the head behind” when removing a tick. Often when you remove the female, their is a male immediately next to her that will also need to be removed. Tick heads are actually quite small, and don’t burrow into the skin. They bite, and cause the skin to swell up around their heads to hold them in place. They also release a “glue” which holds them on the skin, allowing them to feed in peace. Females are the only ticks that get really large. They engorge themselves with blood right before they mate and lay eggs. When fully engorged they are lighter in colour and appear like little gray bubbles with legs. These are also usually the only ticks that people see. Ticks move to higher ground. This means that we usually find them around the head, in the ears, under the arms, in the groin, or under the tail. There is a particular tick on this coast, Ixodes pacificus, which seems to have a predilection for attaching above the eye, where the “eye brow” would be. When they are not attached they are usually moving on top of the fur, and when attached they line themselves up with the fur so that they are more difficult to spot. They can and do disappear into all types of fur, even very short or light coloured fur. Ticks are not a summer only problem on this coast. They tend to come out in a “first wave” once the snows have melted and a “second wave” when summer temperatures fall below the high twenties. For the rest of Canada, that means spring and fall. For us, that can mean a wave in February, followed by several smaller waves throughout the summer. If your dog walks along trails, spends time in the bush, or with other dogs; they should be vaccinated for lyme disease, one of the only diseases that ticks carry that we can vaccinate for. They should also be given a “no bite” tick preventive. Even with these measures, they should be checked after every trip out onto the trails to prevent ticks from being carried into your home.

First remove anything from your closet that you can’t wear - pictures, a vacuum, yarn etc. and find them new homes. Next, pull out all your clothes that don’t work for the season and set them aside. Start by organizing the current season... it will be overwhelming to deal with all your clothes at once, but just get it done. Now group your clothes by “like” items before purging. It will be easy to decide how many of your five black pants you need, or which pair looks tired. Be honest - how many keepsake t-shirts do you really need? Don’t hold back! Finally, try on your remaining items. You can’t know how they fit when they’re on the hanger. For each piece remaining, ask the following questions:

SLOAN (l-r Jay Ferguson, Andrew Scott, Patrick Pentland, Chris Murphy) photo: Corbin Smith
RIDEOUT: Are you still releasing your music under your own “murderecords” label? Why did you call it murderecords – seems a bit of a contentious name…or was that the point? CHRIS MURPHY: I wasn’t a huge fan of the name murderecords but I am in a democracy. The thing that saves it for me is the logo that I made for it consisting of a bunch of m’s (for murderecords) that are supposed to look like flying crows. The collective term for crows is murder. Each member of Sloan owns a quarter of the record label. At the moment we are not releasing records by other artists. It is essentially a vehicle for Sloan to own and operate its own records. See Anthem records - home of Rush. RIDEOUT: As a band do you have a preference of being in the studio laying down tracks vs. being out on the road?
SLOAN is a Toronto-based rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sloan has released 12 LPs, two EPs, a live album, a Greatest hits album and more than thirty singles. The band has received nine Juno Award nominations, winning one in 1997 for best alternative album. The band is known for sharing the songwriting from each member of the group. Simon Rideout, publisher of What’s On Digest, recently had the opportunity to interview Sloan founder and lead singer: Chris Murphy. CHRIS MURPHY: I love to do both. I love all aspects of my job. I love writing, recording, rehearsing, making the artwork and promo materials and touring. I even enjoy coming home from touring. RIDEOUT: How do you find playing the more intimate 800-1000 seat venues vs. the larger arena’s? Does it affect the way you perform? CHRIS MURPHY: We never got to the point where we played anything larger than the “intimate” venues of which you speak. Had we played arenas perhaps we would be sad/depressed/ embarrassed. I would be happy if 400 people came to see us on Vancouver Island. RIDEOUT: You have been such a prolific band. How have your sources of inspiration changed since those heady and more grunge inspired 90’s days?
CHRIS MURPHY: I’m sure our inspirations have changed. We were essentially boys and now we claim to be men. As for being prolific, we have 4 writers so if we release a 12 song record every 2 years, we only have to come up with a minimum of 1.5 songs per year. It’s not that difficult.
hear. We benefitted from timing more than once but I don’t know if we have been considered anything other than a working band in the past 15 years. Beyond Canada? I have no idea. Don’t suck and keep your head down. All we can do is continue to add to our large body of work. It’s still fun for me.
RIDEOUT: It’s such a funny story as to how you came up with the band name Sloan derived from a nick-name of “slow one” morphed via the Quebec accent to “Sloan”…do you still hang out or cross paths with the so-called “Slow One”…the inspiration for the name Sloan…Mr. Larsen I believe? I wonder if the French-speaking boss ever knew what he begat…?
RIDEOUT: We are so fortunate to have a venerable band such as Sloan visit Nanaimo and we are all very much looking forward to the show! I speak for all Nanaimo when I say welcome and please come back if only to visit.
CHRIS MURPHY: I have no idea. I haven’t even seen Jason Larson in years. He is on the cover of our first ep. We asked him if we could use his nickname as the name of our band and he told us we could if we put him on the cover of our first record. We are true to are word. RIDEOUT: What can we do to ensure we cultivate independent and clear voices such as that of Sloan on the Canadian music scene and indeed beyond?
CHRIS MURPHY: Nanaimo is as valid as any place to play for us. Should I assume we are playing in a bar? A Nanaimo Bar, if you will. RIDEOUT: We have both the delicious treat and an actual bar with that name but, no, you are playing the Port Theatre which is an excellent venue. Thanks for the interview and I look forward to the show. CHRIS MURPHY: Thanks see you then!
CHRIS MURPHY: I am unable to ensure anything beyond keeping the band together and trying to make a living doing what we started before the internet started. That’s hard enough. Who has a clear voice? What does that even mean? I think we are making the music we like more than the music we think people want to

TheatreOne’s production of With Glowing Hearts: How Ordinary Women Worked Together to Change the World (And Did) by Jennifer Wynne Webber, directed by David Mann This is the rousing true story of women in 1940s Kirkland Lake, Ontario who fought to improve conditions for their husbands working in the town’s mines. They became the heart and soul of a union organizing drive that eventually changed their lives – and the world. The role women have played in Canada’s labour movement is largely untold, though their efforts have led to profound social and legislative changes, including to important labour laws. This play has particular impact and resonance for communities like Nanaimo, which was founded on the coal-mining industry and identifies as a proud working-class town with deep roots in the labour movement. The recent women’s marches seen across Canada and around the world in January of this year also make this story particularly timely and meaningful. “I laughed and cried. I got angry. I gained courage.... I saw the connections between yesterday and today.” Barb Byers, Member of the Order of Canada, former Secretary - Treasurer of the Canadian Labour Congress

NANAIMO UNIQUE KIDS ORGANIZATION (NUKO) serve children aged 2.5 - 19 who face neurological disabilities like autism, downs syndrome, FAS and others that impact learning. We provide support academically, recreationally, socially and behaviourally in a safe learning centre environment with low student to adult ratios and small class sizes. We are a non- profit registered Canadian charity that was started by families in 2005 who were seeking solutions for their own children. We are proud of our successes - we have seen students obtain their adult graduation, and gain the skills needed to transition back into the public system. Exploring Outdoor - Magnifying the Fun Most young children enjoy searching for hidden treasures. Harnessing this desire to discover mysteries is a great way to encourage time outside. There are many ways to get a closer look at nature. As the weather improves and everything is coming back to life, spring is the perfect time to check out what’s hiding in the garden. A magnifying glass can give a whole new perspective on a blade of grass. Bug jars have air holes and a built in magnifying glass that let you watch bugs crawl around bigger than life. A bug viewer has special mirrors built in that allow you to see what the bottom of the insect looks like as it scurries around. These tools make it easy to count legs, looks for antenna, check out wing patterns or see if an ant has teeth. For older children there are several options for taking magnification up a step. A simple pocket microscope can be fun for on the go fun. Some of these even double as a small telescope. A basic traditional microscope allows for up to 400 times magnification, for those who want a truly up close look at their discoveries. A Zoomy is a digital microscope that plugs into a computer USB and brings the 54-times magnified image up on the screen. The Zoomy microscopes are great for observing creatures in a petri dish without harm.
The images can be captured and printed for further observation or use in projects. Whether it’s a flower, ant or feather that draws your attention, we hope that the weather allows for some up close exploring this month!

Oops I did it again… If you accidentally hit delete on an important photo or document from your PC or Laptop stay calm. Before you fly into a panic try to see if you can find it this way. Open Windows Explorer and type the file name into the search box in the upper right corner. It’s just possible you didn’t delete the file at all but moved it to a different folder with an unintended mouse click. If this search doesn’t work try this: open up your Recycle Bin (located on your desktop) and look for the file. If you see a lot of files in the Recycle Bin simply right-click inside the window, hover the mouse pointer over “sort by” and click “date deleted.” This results in the most recently deleted files showing at the top of the Window. Still no luck Bitrate Computers in Nanaimo has a tool specially designed to recover deleted files.

Are Detoxes or Cleanses really necessary? Firstly I ask have you ever done a cleanse or detox that wasn’t complete torture? . Sometimes you don’t even eat whole foods but just drink liquids such as teas or juiced foods. You might see where I am going with this. There are no apparently legitimate studies that validate or legitimize any detox or cleanses out there. I know there are a ton of buzz words around cleanses such as, “Detox your liver”, “Get the chemicals out of your body”, “Detox your body”, etc. Firstly, your liver is your builtin detoxing system. Secondly all things everywhere are made up of different chemicals technically even water is a chemical. Detox is a legitimate medical term that has been turned into a marketing strategy. Designed to treat a none existent condition. Actual detoxification is provided in hospitals under life-threatening circumstances. Usually when there are dangerous levels of drugs, alcohol or other poisons in the body. These are not product you can purchase in a pharmacy for personal use. Nanaimo Theatre Group Presents its Festival Play Where we come from, where we’re going, and the choices we make, or don’t make, along the way. These are the themes underpinning the blunt, yet touching, story of Margie Walsh and her Southie life in David Lindsay-Abair’s award winning play Good People. With humour and true to life language, Lindsay-Abair has created characters who draw us in from the opening scene and hold us through the unresolved but hopeful ending. We follow Margie as she desperately grasps at threads in her attempt to find employment. Is it luck or is it simply our destiny that determines where we end up in the social strata? Can anyone really do it alone? And can we still be “good people” as we climb? Thought provoking, hilarious at times, and poignant, Good People promises to bring up moments of reflection and challenges the idea of luck vs hard work in our quest to get ahead. Nanaimo Theatre Group opens this show at the Bailey Studio, 2373 Rosstown Road, on Wednesday, April 18th at 8 PM. The show continues Wednesdays to Sundays until May 5th. Sunday matinees are at 2 PM. All tickets are $20 and can be booked at nanaimotheatregroup.ca or by calling 250-758-7224. This play will also open the North Island Zone Festival on May 21st at the Bailey Studio.
