Holiday Decorating There are a myriad of simple and inexpensive decor ideas that can brighten your home this holiday season. With the dark days of winter upon us, now is the time to amp up the cheer, cosiness and elegance of our indoor spaces. Here are a few ideas to help you get started. • Nothing says elegance like winter white tapers or pillar candles! Surround them with freshlycut sprigs of holly, Christmas baubles or faux cranberries and you have a holiday centrepiece of seasonal beauty! • Have some glass containers lying around or little-used wine glasses in the cupboard? Fill them with pretty monochromatic Christmas baubles, or unshelled nuts, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and faux cranberries for a touch of cheer • Spray paint some pinecones a cheery cranberry, warm gold, shimmery silver or snowy white, then display in some greenery for a pretty table runner or in a glass container for a seasonal centrepiece • For a touch of ‘Country Christmas’, fill plain planters, pots and pails with birch logs, or add a tiny string of lights, ornaments or berries to greenery sprigs throughout your home • The judicious use of red can give your home a ‘Country Christmas’ feel, too. Red ribbons and bows on the front door or on the tree, faux cranberries, red candles, and red cushions and throws for the couch can ‘warm up’ a space and enhance the sense of cosiness • Lush gold ribbons, gold ornaments, pinecones and fir branches can create elegant wreaths, tabletops or decorations for the mantle • Putting a wreath of any kind around a bowl of snacks turns it into a pretty table centrepiece! And tiny tabletop ‘trees’ (sprigs of greenery placed in a vase and hung with small ornaments) add a festive touch to any room

Many homes already have most of the materials needed to create great holiday displays. And what isn’t lying around already can usually be purchased inexpensively at any craft store. But there’s no beating the natural beauty that comes from bringing the outdoors in! So take your decorating cue from nature this year, add some pretty candles or baubles, then sit back with a hot beverage and enjoy!

Gear Up For Winter Driving As fall leads into winter our approach to driving requires yet another ‘shift’. Longer hours of darkness, temperature fluctuations, consistently wet roads, and - with the holidays quickly approaching excited children, special events and holiday shoppers all require our attention. This means drivers, and their vehicles, must be at their best. And that means getting ready now. Preparing yourself is the first rule. If the weather turns bad or the road conditions are unsafe, consider whether you really need to travel now or can you postpone your trip for even a few hours until things improve? To better anticipate any issues, be sure to check out Drive BC for the latest highway conditions, Drive BC Weather for an up-todate forecast, or call 1.800.550.4997 for BC road information 24 hrs a day Plan your route ahead of time. Make sure someone knows that route and your expected arrival time Leave lots of time to get where you’re going so you are not in a rush Leave at least 4 seconds between you and the vehicle in front so you have time to react
Bring warm clothing in case you have to get out of your car, and if you have a cell phone make sure it is charged Of course, preparing yourself for winter driving is just part of the picture. Your vehicle has to be prepared, too! Make sure you have the proper tires on your car for the conditions you are likely to meet. In most places in BC this means switching to winter tires Have a maintenance check-up on your vehicle so there aren’t any unpleasant or costly midtrip surprises! Be sure to defrost your windows BEFORE pulling out of the driveway. You can’t avoid what you can’t see Finally, keep a winter survival kit in the car where it can be easily reached in an emergency. To see a list of what should be in that emergency kit, or for more ideas on winter driving safety, visit shiftintowinter.ca

PET TIP Helping your anxious little friend Last month we went over why dogs feel stress. Most of it is not knowing how to react in a certain situation. So what can you do? Dogs need to be shown how to act, or they will attempt to figure it out on their own. “Sit to say please” is a really good first strategy. It helps dogs to realize what you expect from them when they don’t have direct cues to work with. First things first. Your dog needs to know how to “sit”. That doesn’t have anything to do with the command most of us use, which is “sit…sit…SIT…. SIT!!!!” If you repeat your command, your dog will
Written by Dr. Julie Lamb Applecross Veterinary Hospital
learn that the command word is the repeat of the command, not the word itself. If you repeat your command, you will get increasingly annoyed that your dog isn’t listening. Now, instead of teaching a dog to decrease anxiety, we are teaching them that sitting is what we do when our friend is angry. Say “sit” once, then help your dog into the correct position. Tell them what a good dog they are. Allow them to get up, or take a couple of steps backwards so that they stand up. Then say “sit” again and help them into position. Repeat this ten times two to three times a day. Only ever give the command once. One command, correct, repeat. Don’t lose patience, or try to rush them into the next step. They need to sit the first time, every time. Then you’re ready to move on. For some dogs, especially those familiar with the “sit…sit… SIT...SIT!!!” command, this can take a couple of weeks, don’t rush it. Once your dog has the “sit” command down, start asking them to “sit” for everything that you would ask a child to say “please” for: I want my supper(“sit”), I want my ears scratched (“sit”), I want onto the bed (“sit”), I want onto the couch (“sit”), I need to go pee (“sit”), I want my leash on so we can go (“sit), etc. They do NOT get what they want unless they “sit”. Be patient. “Sit” and waiting patiently is really hard. Especially if it’s something you might not live the next five minutes if you don’t get right now (For Lucy, this is getting her supper and getting her leash on). Calmly wait until your command is complied with. If you find one thing is particularly hard for your dog, repeat the action ten times two to three times a day until they realize it’s just one more thing they do in the day. Our goal is to allow your dog to make the connection between “sit” and I-get-what-I-want. Dogs are really smart, and most of the time they learn how to get what they want. A lot of the time, that isn’t the way we want them to ask for things. Using this technique, you are teaching them a way to ask politely. The side effect of this technique is teaching your dog that when they are calm, they get good things. I sit calmly, I get supper. I sit calmly, I get a pet. I sit calmly, I get a treat. Some dogs start translating this to other situations “If I am calm, good things happen”. If I am calm, I can go with my friend. If I am calm, I can stay out when company is over. If I am calm, my friend is happy with me. Most however, need a bit more direction to get to that point.

The Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular celebrates 10 years with an island expansion! PRODUCER, DIRECTOR AND CREATOR, KATY BOWEN-ROBERTS,
is thrilled to be celebrating the 10th annual show with a Vancouver Island expansion to now include Nanaimo, Victoria and Courtenay. Ten years ago, in a quaint little area on Vancouver Island, well known for the cozy Crow & Gate Pub, the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular was born. In the spring of 2007, Katy returned from her singing career in Europe to her family home in Ladysmith. She brought with her a dream. This dream has grown over the past 10 years into a show that is unique and has become a special holiday tradition for over nine thousand people across Vancouver Island. Katy busies herself year round with her work on this production. “In February, I had a wonderful time revisiting past shows as well as researching new music for our 10th anniversary show,” says Katy. “It’s full of surprises and as well we are excited to be bringing back a few of our favorites from past years. I am always astounded at how much wonderful music there is to choose from.” Katy is thrilled to be working with James Mark, her old Pauline Haarer Elementary school friend again for the 10th season. James’ skills, talent and positive personality have made this a truly wonderful experience for Katy and her family. “It has been an honor working with him”, she says. The 10th annual
production is well underway. This year's singing and dancing extravaganza will include new Broadway hits, classical songs and Christmas favourites, as well as musical tributes to Johnny Cash, June Carter, Ella Fitzgerald and the Village People. As part of the tenth anniversary show Elvis will once again grace the stage and the sights and sounds of Abba will be back by popular demand. There will be songs from the old classic White Christmas as well as a stunning arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s Halleluiah. The creative team which includes Katy, James (Music Arranger & Director) and Lindsay Sterk (Choreographer) were overwhelmed by the turnout at this year’s auditions. Over 100 talented singers and dancers auditioned for the show and this year’s cast have been carefully selected. Costumes have arrived from around the world. Sequins, top hats, gowns, feathers, boas, jumpsuits and character garments have taken over the costume room. Katy has pieced together each of the 14 colorful scenes. “One of the most exciting aspects of this show is the variety of costumes which our singers and dancers will quickly change into to transform from scene to scene” she says. “I love how each new look, represents a completely new style and era of music. It makes the show sensational”. Tickets are on sale at the Port Box office (250.754.8550) for 7 shows from Dec 14 – 18 and they are selling quickly. There are also 3 performances at the Sid Williams Theatre in Courtenay and 3 performances at the McPherson Playhouse in Victoria. For more information, visit www.yellowpointchristmasspectacular. ca. It’s quickly becoming a tradition for audiences across Vancouver Island. A favorite among bus tour groups, staff parties, family and friend reunions, and festive celebrations. Book now so you don’t miss this exciting event!

Light the Trees at Your Hospital, and Give the Gift of Healthcare!
We have a Christmas wish to raise $500,000 to buy essential medical equipment, including one of two new CT Scanners for NRGH. Until this year NRGH had the two oldest CT Scanners on the Island. New, state-of-the-art technology now available greatly reduces the radiation exposure rate and the CT Scanner is preferred for trauma cases, emergency cases, and critically ill patients needing continuous monitoring. This equipment is vital to the Hospital’s Medical Imaging Department.
We invite you to Light the Trees this Christmastime. Feel the joy of generosity, and the glow of gratitude for accessible healthcare here at home. Our Hospital deserves the best medical equipment possible. Help Light the Trees with your gift. If you have any questions please call 250-755-7690 or toll-free from the Oceanside 250-947-8212 or simply visit www. nanaimohospitalfoundation.com to make a secure online donation. From our hearts to your home Merry Christmas and Happy New Year; thank you for making our wish come true!

‘Tis the season of gratitude, generosity, and joy! The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is delighted to announce it’s firstever Christmas Campaign and it is happening right now! I am humming holiday carols as I write. You have likely received special mail inviting you to help put lifesaving equipment into the hands of medical professionals on Central Island. To honour your generosity the Hospital Foundation will Light the Trees at the entrance of Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) during the month of December; one tree at a time. If we reach our goal we will illuminate every entranceway tree on Christmas Eve. Imagine the joy those facing health challenges will feel when they share a precious memory with family, as the holiday spirit reaches them in Hospital. Your donation will not only Light the Trees, it will help fund lifesaving equipment for NRGH.
