Touro Law Center not even actually prescription glasses but these are on for that expert powers so you can be like wow that person knows what they're talking about um last video I showed you all eight feminists lighter or a lighter that said feminists on it and I brought up the discussion that we could possibly have about like should we all be buying feminist clothes like I don't know like you all tell me I'm gonna start the discussion and I really want to hear what you all think like I hate to sound like a teacher like a professor but like you all are my friends like I don't know I would talk with my friends about this like weighing the options so in general we can see why there's this visceral reaction from feminists and people who are line their politics with feminists politics or whatever why you would want to buy something that says a feminist sign why would you want why you would want to wear a shirt or have a lighter or something that you could show to move someone or give to someone like put it on your backpack in a patch put it on your denim jacket and a patch like we all get the visceral reaction of like why you would want to do that it's like this is something I'm passionate about this is something I identified very closely with it's Who I am you know what I mean like this is who we are we're feminists like that's notice we're very connected to it and it's also something that's like contrary to like hegemonic and dominating like views right feminism so it's like you're wanting to say like I'm actively challenging you know like dominating views and stuff like that and dominating not just for use obviously like systems of power it's like listen like I don't agree with these and this is how I feel and you want to express that and it's like we completely get it um but let's think about like how that can be problematic like what are the implications of that and like why is that like meaningful so I was thinking on the side of like yeah this makes sense like this is fair we can say like you closely align yourself with feminism it's something that's very important to you so of course you want to represent that on your clothes it's like a way of communicating non-verbally with people that like this is something that's important to you also just like a lot of times when you're wearing like a feminist shirt or those feminist panties or whatever they're made by people who you support and have good feminist politics in general and like have something to say that you just agree with me or like listen like this is this is what I'm saying I can get with that and like that's why I did it I saw that me and you ads before I've seen the Instagram pictures I've seen them on tumblr so that's why when I walked into American to shot I was like this is something I lined myself with which I'm also gonna be critical about a little later and I was like yeah like this is this is how I feel like I I like them I like this so you have that aspect also just like on a basic level when people see like feminist patches and feminist backpacks like buttons and stickers and stuff like that on your notebook on your backpack you a lot of people think that like that's gonna start the discussion like a lot of people are assume a lot of young people assume who are feminist cause I'm like hey like someone's gonna ask me about it and be like listen this is what feminism is this is why I believe in it like this is why I align myself with this if you want to know here you go and it could like maybe change someone into a feminist or give them someone information they didn't previously have and it's like duh like of course we want that of course we want more people to like understand this thing because a lot of people hear feminists they're like what is that they're like why would anyone ever align themselves with that um ignore that well yeah like we're like we know how people feel when they hear the word feminist and I tried to film this before and I was talking about how sometimes what happened on tumblr was there's this huge discussion about like feminist patches and why like along the lines of white feminism which is not feminists who are women or whatever that are white like racially but like white feminism which is like this exclusionary like version of feminism that's perpetuated by white women who identify as feminists but are exclusive their phonus their feminism is not intersectional it's not inclusive and stuff like that and they'll be like I'm like riot girl very much that kind of scene and they'll have like patches that's a feminist and they think that that's like curing the world of like all misogyny and like patriarchal oppression and it's like no and someone one of the young girls who agreed with like why it's important to have patches that say feminists on often girl power and the feminist symbol which is also problematic um she was saying like yeah but like that's how people learn about feminism and really I think my feminist letter I could personally have a critic who's gushing about someone with feminism do more than what's usually done which is someone says oh you're a feminist and they're like I don't know about that and what a woman or someone always responds with this don't you believe that men and women should be paid equally yeah so you're a feminist it's like you try to make feminism as simple and clear cut and palatable as possible so that nobody can disagree with it and I'm not saying that's bad because like nobody should disagree with it like nobody shouldn't align themselves with like justice and liberation for women and everyone that's feminine feminism is but like I don't want them to like

necessarily be like this like POW durable easy not multi-dimensional just like this is what feminism is you don't have to know anything else you don't have to learn anything else you don't have to understand anything else it's just about women getting paid equal to men because women white women or this entire group of women make this much compared to man when really like Latino women make this much of black women make this one and it's like you know what I mean like we have a lot of like there's a lot of layers in that phrase alone and there's a lot more like complexity to feminism so yeah now on the other side of it where people have been critical is on the side of like remember when weena Dunham and like some other white women or something and it might not have even been Lena I'm just kind of revising her there's like some hashtag white feminism moment where these public figure white women were wearing this shirt that says this is what a feminist looks like this is what a feminist and everybody's like a lot of people are kind of just like her I guess and I think that one of the first initial problems with the UM campaign was that it was all white women or something like that and it's like is that what a feminist look like all feminists are skinny white rich able-body public figures like is that what we are is that what it looks like I don't look like that so a lot of people are like then it came out that these shirts were printed in a sweatshop so we are feminists but we're wearing something that was made by exploited women and I don't even know if it was an unethical kind of like garment factory sweatshop is the quick term but like I don't know if those made an unethical garment vector I just saw the picture of a woman who worked in a garment factory and if she was a woman of color I'm pretty sure and she was holding up this shirt that says this is what a feminist looks like and just that single image that quick image makes us like no so it's like no one would ever buy a this is what a feminist looks like sure after seeing that right because you're like hey that's not feminine to like i stuff in sweatshops but my thought was all of us buy stuff from sweatshops so is it only okay to buy things from sweatshops if they don't think feminists on it you know what I mean is it only okay to buy an H&M crop top as long as it doesn't say feminist and it he was Magnus what job is made by someone who's probably exploited you probably can't unionize probably has tried to unionize for years and just shut down in all these ways and it's women who are doing this like it's okay to wear that and identify as a feminist if it doesn't say feminist is it okay to talk feminism and learn about feminism through tumblr and PDF files of books and like bell hooks and stuff like through the computer that was made unethically probably in China in the you know what I mean like are we accessing it through our iPhones on tumblr a lot of feminist theory and our iPhones are made and that like really unethical like not very feminist factory like is that okay is that bat being bad feminist or is it only being a bad feminist when I buy a feminist lighter and nobody accused me of being a bad feminist for buying feminist lighter I problem a problem with ties myself I was like I don't I don't know if that's completely fair cuz I don't know where this was made if it was made fairly and I explained in the video and in the description that like I don't always buy things that are like 100% made like by a woman who was paid $50 an hour and has benefits at her garment factory and stuff like that like I don't know where these glasses were me I mean I bought them on eBay so I guess this isn't count but do you know what I mean like I don't where that wire is from I don't care they're like I don't know what the IKEA Factory is like and so I'm not saying that I have to be perfect now it's kind of like that's something we can be critical of as well it's kind of like do we like what are the rules like if I if I should shouldn't buy a most feminine slider like what do I buy like is it like I said about the accessing computers that are made unethically and like getting feminist theory from the internet it's like I'm is that okay is that the same thing is that not the same does it matter also I think about how these feminists clothes and items are sold to us and the way the fact we can problematised that it looks like something's wrong to my teeth because of the light and it's like it's embarrassing but like yeah like how how are these things being sold to us like how are they being marketed to us they're selling feminism to US making feminism into a commodity and we're buying it and it's like is that bad on one side you can say like people feminists should be benefiting from capitalism in the same way that everybody else is especially since they're good people or they might reinvest into the community and blah blah or even if they don't like why can't they reap the benefits and all this other stuff and that we can talk about how it's empowering in a way and we can be critical of it in another way for women and all these creators of these feminists items like to be empowered term like monetary gain like that's one thing but then we could also say like is it fair that we're being sold like these Postell Petra Collins images of like soft usually thin or not like very fat not very dark-skinned not very hairy or if they're hairy it's like armpit hair that you can hide and then cover or like leg hair that you can hide and cover it's not like facial hair and beards like these kinds of images of like soft pastel colored light skin light brown skin pale skin white girls racially ambiguous to invalidate people of colors identities um girls and non-binary people in these images and it's like is that fair because we don't all look like that like is that fair that and I'm not saying like every single advertisement in the world has to represent disabled people fat people dark-skinned people all people hairy people like that would be cool if they did it but like they don't but I'm just saying like we can promote eyes that and think like is it fair that they're selling us this kind of like idealized image and

like making feminism and like being feminist like into this thing where it's like you have a girl gang or a gang of people that are all like non-binary or women not anybody who's too dark-skinned in the gang it's like not anybody who is too muscular in the gang it's like we're all kind of just like okay like you know what I mean like that's kind of a weird image to some people and tell them like this is like feminism and this is like aspirational it's kind of weird aspirational images that we have for like a lot of these feminists selling items as well though we can think about how like how it's good like how I want feminists making money all the time like how glad I am that feminists can make money but then we're like do we want them making money from like selling me feminism or don't we like is that a problem and then we talk about like the black girl magic shirt black girls excuse me our magic shirts and like black lives matter shirts to get it like for further problematize how many times I'm gonna say that word and like stumble over it but to further be critical of like those shirts um I was reading an article when I was doing a research paper for this semester last semester about the garment industry and I didn't even need to come upon it but there is this article and I didn't get to finish it about how a lot of black people black activists were saying like is it fair that we're wearing shirts that say black lives matter that were made in China by exploited laborers and it's not like feel exploited laborers are black but it's like we want social justice and liberation for people and doesn't mean that we have to boycott everything made in China and like stars I'm out but it doesn't mean that like that's weird like you know what I mean like that's people are in unsafe labor conditions and aren't able to unionize in a fair way or unionize and get things that are supposed to have been changed that don't change in a lot of these garment factories and they're just like we work to change this and you're still not paying us correctly and stuff like that and we're wearing a shirt like yeah black lives matter like fuck however this was made you know what I mean so I don't know I think like it's like there's so many like I don't feel like this is a two box black and white kind of thing and I don't even think like this is a Venn diagram or anybody's in the middle I think this is a circle like I always think of these things as circles like when you create something or when you graph something in a graph when you put something on a graph and you know how you do those dots and it forms into a circle there's so many different points of this that makes it one like idea like we can be critical in all these different ways and still not be like well okay well I think it's completely wrong to wear feminist panties and feminist shirts or I think it's completely fine like I personally don't have a side I just think there are criticisms that I have and then there's me wanting to order online some panties panties that say feminist like um you all can tell me what you think I'm really really interested to see what you all think like if you have you probably know more than I do and you have more critical thoughts and critical feedback about this and like research about this you could be like they're not made in sweat jobs like those workers get paid a lot and have good benefits or you could be like yeah they're made in sweatshops I know I research the hits or whatever just let me know or you could be like it doesn't matter that they are cuz everything is made in sweatshops tell me what you think um I love you all so much I'm so glad you all asked me about this I didn't think you'd care I love you all bye SUNY Fredonia.
