RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH NEW FLOORING One of your home’s most noticeable design elements is actually right under your feet. Whether you realize or not, your choice for flooring has a critical impact on the entire look and feel of every room in the house. And with the new year on the way, it’s time for you to look at your flooring and see if a new style would be right for you.

Unlike a lot of other home projects, you can put in new flooring during the colder months. Refresh your floor style with some of these ideas:

Go with a lighter hardwood. Wood floors will never go out of style, but lighter-toned hardwoods with smooth, matte finishes are becoming more popular. 4-5-inch widths are also popular. Choose a natural finish. Natural finishes for wood floors are also rising in popularity over stained wood floors. To achieve the natural look, the wood is oxidized with minerals that react with tannins in the wood to create color. Gray is here to stay. Gray is a popular color in home décor, and gray wood flooring is no exception. Shades of gray run the gamut, from light gray, to driftwood to darker rustic hues. Gray wood floors look great in a kitchen, especially when paired with white cabinetry. Hardwood in bathrooms. Many homeowners are also opting for hardwood floors in bathrooms, especially a distressed or antique look that adds a unique warmth. If opting for

hardwood in the bathroom, it’s a good idea to finish floor areas where puddles may form – such as outside of the shower or tub – with tile. Blend with dark carpeting. Dark colors are popular in carpeting – colors such as black, charcoal, or jewel tones like ruby red or emerald green. These rich colors play well with warm woods when used for stair runners or area rugs in bedrooms and living spaces. Opt for low-profile, patterned carpets over thicker, shag varieties.

So, while you’re spending time indoors this winter, focus on the flooring and play with some of these style ideas in your head. Consider refreshing your flooring in the new year to give your home a style boost and contact your home contractor or local flooring company for samples and more great ideas.

If you’re lucky enough to have a spare bedroom, you may want to think of it less as a rarely used landing spot for guests or a place to store extra ‘stuff,’ and more as a blank canvas - a pleasant spot you can use for rest, relaxation, hobbies or exercise, or even as a money-making option.

Consider these inspiring ideas from room designers and creative thinkers:

GET CRAFTY - Do you sew occasionally? Like to draw or paint? Love to do amazing gift-wraps? Fill the room with smart choices of furnishings, storage, tables and accessories to make your hobby more fun than ever. MAKE IT PERSONAL Turn the room into a ma’am- or man-cave, with comfy furnishings, a TV and sound system and anything else you need to make it a cozy, personal retreat. MAKE IT A STUDY - Create a cheerful home office space where you or your kids can pay bills, read online or study without interruption. Install a work counter/desk across one wall, add enough chairs and supply drawers, plus computers and printers as needed. BUILD YOUR OWN LIBRARY - Book lovers can line the walls with shelving, collect books to their heart’s content, install a chair or two and some great reading light, and revel in a private library.

MAKE MUSIC - For parents and/ or kids with a passion for making music, lay down thick carpeting to soak up sound, add a few comfy floor cushions for musically inclined visitors and make room to jam with friends or solo with as many instruments as you wish. START A GARDEN - Wish you had a greenhouse? You can cultivate seedlings in that spare room from the waning days of winter through early spring. Buy ready-made shelving and add light fixtures and supplies appropriate for nurturing baby plants. SWEAT IT OUT - Whether you practice yoga, run or do strength training, you'll be more motivated, better disciplined and more excited about your workouts in a dedicated exercise space. Drag that treadmill out of the basement, add all the exercise equipment you want and go! AIRBNB IT - Make a few extra bucks by renting out your guest room through Airbnb. Outfit the space with attractive towels, linens and toiletries, and make sure your home's Wi-Fi password is prominently displayed.

BRING IN THE NATURAL LIGHT WITH THESE HOME FEATURES There’s no substitute for natural light. It makes your home feel more uplifting and energized, which is why it’s usually atop the list of requirements for luxury homebuyers. While tall ceilings and oversized windows are sure to let the sunlight pour in, here are a few features that ensure you’ll have an abundance of natural light each day. SOLARIUM

A solarium is like having a greenhouse connected to your home. The walls and ceilings are often designed entirely with glass and are heated by the sun, but can still get comfortably warm on a winter day. They’re ideal for growing plants that require a full day of direct light and provide an idyllic spot to soak up the sun while doing yoga, curling up with a book or just hanging out with the family.

An atrium is a space within your home that’s either open-air or covered with a glass ceiling. While relatively rare in private residences, they add a striking element to any interior and allow natural light to flood into the center of the home. Originally, they were designed to increase ventilation in houses and are becoming popular once again thanks to sustainable movements, like biophilic design.

Sunrooms are also usually built with glass walls and ceilings, but unlike a solarium, they’re integrated with your home’s heating and cooling system. A major advantage is that this is more of a four-season room that you can enjoy day or night. However, a sunroom requires high-performance glass to retain heat and air conditioning, otherwise, you’ll likely rack up a hefty energy bill.

Of course, nothing beats a retractable glass wall to let the light pour in. On warm, sunny days, you can easily open it up to let the outdoors inside and bask in nature from the comfort of your living room. Compared to the other options, this is the most practical to add to your home for more natural light without undertaking a major renovation project. Reprinted with permission from RISMedia. ©2020. It's never convenient to have your water heater stop working, but it is even worse during the winter. To ensure your water heater is fit to last the entire season, here are some tips for routine maintenance that you can perform. As you cover these points, you can also conduct a mini assessment of your water heater's health to identify any warning signs or potential hazards that may need to be corrected before the temperature drops.

Most water heaters are built to last over a decade, but as they age, they require more care and attention. Even just a few minutes of annual maintenance can prevent unnecessary malfunctions and disruptive breakdowns. The first thing you should do prior to winter is check the water pressure valve; it's located on the side of your water heater, and it stops the temperature from rising to dangerous levels.

Your water heater should be capped at 120 degrees Fahrenheit, so as to prevent scalding and burns. If your heater doesn't have a built-in temperature gauge, you can use a standard cooking thermometer to test the water temperature. If any of the hot water coming from your faucets surpasses 120 degrees, there is a higher risk of mechanical failure, sediment build-up and burn injuries to you and your family.

If too much pressure builds up, though, your water heater tank could actually explode. To release pressure and ensure yours is in tip-top shape, place a bucket beneath your water heater's discharge pipe and lift the pressure-release valve. Water should discharge at this point. If it doesn't, the valve needs to be replaced.

If you find that your temperature gauge is set properly, but your water is too hot or too cold, contact a professional right away to identify the cause of the problem. Your tank may need flushed or there could be a mechanical issue that needs addressed.

One of the most common water heater repair jobs is a tank cleaning. This removes built-up residue, dirt and sediment that accumulates throughout the year. Experts recommend annual flushes, which can be done at an affordable cost. Having a technician conduct the cleaning can also ensure your heater is functioning properly as they'll also do a professional inspection. If they notice any other problems, they can inform you about the risk and offer potential solutions. You can add these repairs to the current job or schedule them for later at your convenience.

If your water heater is a decade old or even older, it might not be properly insulated. Newer models come insulated to prevent heat loss and maintain system stability. However, older models will require a fiberglass jacket. Make sure that you consult your owner's manual prior to installing any insulation; you should also avoid any type of contact with the furnace's flue. If you aren't sure how to safety insulate your furnace and its pipes, this job can easily be done in a few hours by a licensed plumber.

No one wants to deal with cold water in the middle of winter. To ensure that your home's water stays nice and warm all season long, check your water heater and do some basic maintenance. If you're unsure about something or you notice a problem, have a professional come take a look at it. The sooner you catch potential problems, the easier they will be to take care of! 5 Ways to Impress

Prospective Buyers If you think a mansion-like size, a swanky neighborhood or lavish grounds are the only way to impress visitors to your home, think again. While those characteristics can certainly be awe-inspiring, it’s really the small details that create ‘wow’ moments for guests. Consider some of the following ideas for evoking oohs and aahs from guests or would-be buyers if your home is on the market:

LIGHTING. No matter how small or ordinary your house

PAINT. The right paint color will completely change the feel of your home, both inside and out. While neutrals are both attractive and safe, being a little daring with on-trend shades will really evoke the ‘wow.’ Try one of the many popular shades of gray, go bold with a jewel tone, or create a moody tone with a muted shade of blue. Also think outside the box when it comes to how you paint— for example, instead of bright white, paint the ceiling an eyepopping color; or create a patterned effect with painted stripes in a powder room. Go for a dramatic look in the kitchen by painting upper cabinets white and lower cabinets deep navy or charcoal.

MATERIALS. Using interesting building materials in surprising places is a great way to spark interest. Try framing the interior of your front door in stone or using tongue-and-groove wood planks for a bay windowsill. Flooring is available in many unique options, such as ceramic tiles or laminates that mimic beautifully shaded wood.

DECORATIVES. The easiest way to instantly create a

GARDENS. If you’ve got a green thumb, your biggest 'wow'

may seem, the right lighting will create mounds of atmosphere and immediately elevate your home into the ‘wow’ category. Use bulbs that are the right temperature to create a warm, glowing effect as opposed to a glaring, harsh experience. Then place your lighting strategically to highlight the most unique features of your home, such as two sconces or lanterns by your front door, or ground lights shining up into beautiful trees. Pathway lights help create a welcoming feel and string lights on a porch or patio instantly up the entertainment factor.

‘wow’ moment is by showcasing your most prized decorative pieces. Show off a painting or photograph with a bold matting and frame, and add a picture light if appropriate. Incorporate special antique furnishings into the mainstream mix of your home, as opposed to hiding them in out-of-the way places. Fill your sparkling crystal vases with fresh blooms or greenery and place them in the center of your dining and coffee table to be admired by all rather than letting them go unnoticed in the china cabinet.

factor may be your home’s landscaping. A beautifully planted, well-maintained garden is a sight to behold no matter how small it may be or how large your yard. Help showcase your garden with carefully placed decoratives, such as a bird bath, trellis, slate path or stone bench. This will add a welcoming, artistic feel to your patch of landscape.
