Make Your

DIY PAINT PROJECT A SUCCESSFUL ONE

Painting projects are easier, yet critical tasks that a DIY-er can complete. Whether you’re changing the look of a half bath, adding a team colored paint to a man cave or adding a new border to a guest room, a fresh coat of paint will give you a new look, and leave you feeling accomplished. But before you crack open the paint can and bust out the rollers, remember the important details. You’ll want to ensure that you choose complementary colors, buy the proper amount of paint, and more. Here are some more tips to make your project successful:

GET THE RIGHT TOOLS. The essentials for your project include a paint brush, roller cover, roller frame, paint tray and extension pole. Step ladders, putty knives and drop cloths are also crucial to your paint project’s success. Keep in mind that not all tools are created equal. For example, when you use a high-quality paint brush, you’re more likely to paint straight lines when cutting into comers and walls. You may also notice a much smoother finish, one without unsightly brush strokes, which means a more visually appealing result

with less effort. Don’t just choose the cheapest supplies – it pays to not skimp.

PREPARE THE AREA TO PAINT. Depending on which room you’re painting, planning and preparation can vary. But as a rule of thumb, remove everything from the walls you plan to paint – including pictures, curtains, and switch and wall outlet covers. Use drop cloths to cover floors and blue painters’ tape to protect crown molding. Remove furniture from the room if possible, otherwise, push it to the center of the room and cover with drop cloths.

Next, prepare the surface you’re going to paint. Take this time to patch and sand any holes, then wipe down the surface you’ll be painting with warm water, which helps remove dirt and dust. Finally, if using a primer, prime the walls.

CLEAN UP. Step back and appreciate your hard work, then finish the task by cleaning up. Paint brushes and roller covers should be washed with warm water and a mild detergent promptly after use to ensure they can be used again. Let them air dry. Save any leftover paint for touch-ups, writing on the can what room they were

used for and the color name. This info can help you in the future should you need to buy more of the same color.

By following these tips, your paint project will be a success, and the paint will be where it belongs – on the walls, not on your floors or furniture.

Can’t wait until spring to sell your home? Winter can be a tough time to attract buyers, particularly if you live in a region where there’s going to be ice and snow all around. Your home may not show as well in bad weather; however, it is possible. Here are some winter real estate facts to keep in mind: Everyone Appreciates Mood Create a cozy feel by adding extra pillows or afghans to the sofa and beds, or some plush throw rugs on the floor. Leave the dining room table set for dinner, along with a champagne bucket and a couple of glasses. Add some extra-fluffy towels or robes in the bathrooms. In short, make everything look comfortable and inviting. Bright Light Is Cheery There’s nothing that makes a house cheerier than sunlight. Wash the windows inside and out so they sparkle. Pull up the blinds and throw back the drapes for some warming illumination. In darker corners and niches where the sun won’t reach, place a lamp and keep it on. You could also use spotlighting to illuminate major features of the kitchen, living room or bathroom. Warmth Is Comfort People coming in from the cold will be pleased to find your home is warm and toasty. As a retreat from winter cold, your buyers will have more of a reason to feel comfortable and take their time. You might consider lighting a small fire in the fireplace or wood stove to keep things toasty. Try to keep indoor humidity between 4060 percent to avoid that dry, stuffy feeling.

Stage your home well for the season and you may very well sell faster, and for a higher price, than you expected. You always want to keep your home clean and in good repair, but the trick to selling in winter is creating the effect of a warm, sunny retreat from the elements. DON’T LET YOUR PIPES BURST: Tips to Avoid Winter Pipe Damage Now that it’s the season of frosty weather, homeowners all over could begin dealing with frozen pipes. If your pipes freeze, not only are you in a bind with your water, but the damage to your home could be expensive to repair. The following are some helpful, trusted tips to prevent pipes from freezing: MAINTAIN 55 DEGREES OR HIGHER Even when leaving the residence for extended periods of time, maintaining a temperature throughout the home of 55 degrees or higher will help add an extra level of security to the plumbing. Any increase you incur on the utility bill will still be less than the cost of typical repairs for burst water pipes or the damage it can cause to the rest of the home. USE PIPE INSULATION PRODUCTS Installing specific pipe insulation products is a great precautionary measure. Pipe sleeves, heat tape and heat cable are all available for home use and can add an extra layer of protection. LEAVE FAUCETS AT A TRICKLE Consider leaving faucets open at a trickle during the coldest temperatures. Even a small amount of water moving through your pipes will help prevent water from freezing in place.

CHECK INSULATION Homeowners should check the insulation in and around the house and identify any potential trouble areas. Filling in or adding insulation to attics, crawl spaces, basements and any other areas containing pipes may be necessary. Make sure to also seal any gaps that may be found in the home’s foundation or siding. LEAVE CABINETS OPEN Kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets are best left open during the coldest parts of winter. This allows the warm air circulating in the home to enter and help warm the plumbing under the sink. To further make sure your pipes are ready for winter, or if you suspect there is a potential issue, contact your local plumber so they can come out and inspect them right away. Vinyl plank flooring also has a sturdy fiberglass backing to it making it more rigid. LAMINATE: Installing hard-surface flooring makes clean up more manageable when you have pets. Laminate is always a great option but be sure to choose a high-quality product. The higher the AC (Abrasion Class) rating, the more durable the product. A score of AC 3 is residential, whereas AC 4 is low-traffic commercial, and anything above is considered high-traffic commercial. It is not recommended to go any lower than AC3 or to purchase a product that does not have a rating. TILE: Tile is extremely durable and scratchresistant and makes for easy clean up of accidents and spills. Most tile materials are scratchresistant, but some softer, more porous stones (like marble) may require more maintenance and treatment. For added comfort and warmth, consider using area rugs throughout the space.

CARPET: Most carpet manufacturers have an option to purchase “pet protection.” These are soil resistant, easy to clean and long-lasting finishes. If you are a dog or cat owner considering carpet, ask what protection options are available. BAMBOO: Out of all wood flooring options, bamboo is rated as the best and one of the most popular flooring for dogs and pet-friendly homes. The bamboo wood has a natural hardness that makes it more stain and scratch resistant than traditional hardwood. It can withstand high traffic, is resistant to wear and tear, and is ecofriendly. HARDWOOD: If you prefer hardwood, choose wood with a pronounced grain such as oak or ash. Hiding scratches in the grain are easier, and you can request a matching stain pen from the dealer. Distressed products are trendy, affordable, and stylish and a favorable choice if you have larger pets with claws. A wire-brushed finish is one of the best options available, and this texture makes it very easy to hide scratches. Woods with a distressed, hand-scraped look are also very useful as the distressing helps hide scratches and dents. Choosing a matte or satin finish shows fewer scratches than a product with a higher gloss level.
