Opportunity to Save Tooele Historical Building T
he Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has embarked on a Capital Building fund campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to raise funds to finish the remodeling of a permanent home for the Chamber. This fund was started many years ago by some of the founding members. Their contributions made it possible to purchase the building and do the initial work. The Chamber of Commerce and its Board are determined to secure the additional funds to continue their vision. This building, when completed, will allow us as a Chamber to continue to serve the business community and promote tourism through our welcome center for Tooele County. The Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization, not a government body with taxing authority. The Chamber functions from the dues of its members and fund raising events. Funds raised by the Chamber have been rolled back into promotional venues for businesses such as the “Business Expo – Taste of Tooele,” “Come Together Campaign,” Chamber Resource Directory, Educational Business Seminars and numerous annual events for the community including the annual Easter Egg Hunt and the Santa Parade. The Chamber of Commerce is in need of your help and is asking for you to make a one-time capital contribution for the Chamber. When you contribute we will display your business or individual name on our Heritage Wall, which will be displayed in the lobby of our completed building for generations to come. The Chamber of Commerce will accept any donation amount so that
all community members can be a part of this historic project. The old clinic will indeed be restored to fulfill a great purpose for our community by becoming the new Chamber Headquarters. The Chamber has been in existence for
over 60 years and will certainly continue to outlive all of us. By making a donation you can become one of the original stakeholders in the new Chamber Headquarters. This building will be an asset to the community for years to come.

Blue Rock Family Dental Celebrates Grand Opening
r. Steven Bruderer recently opened Blue Rock Family Dental, a private dental practice in Tooele. Dr. Bruderer is originally from Farmington, Utah, although he and his family moved to Stansbury Park last July from New Jersey. He graduated in 2007 from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa and then received additional general dentistry education and worked as a dentist for three years in the United States Air Force. Blue Rock Family Dental is located in the Overlake area at 1887 N. Aaron Dr. Suite A. You may reach Dr. Bruderer’s office to make an appointment at (435) 8339900. Dr. Bruderer and his wife Michelle are the parents of four children: Sally, Adri, Weston and Calvin. They are excited to be part of the Tooele Valley communities and look forward to meeting new patients and making new friends! Dr. Burberer (left) cuts the cake, donated by Macey’s for the grand opening of Blue Rock Family Dental, with dental floss with help from his wife Michelle and son Calvin. Sandy Vincent, office receptionist and Shelley Gates, dental assistant, (right) are waiting to serve you at the new Blue Rock Family Dental.

Chamber members who attended the event included Bill Upton, First Assembly of God; Cari Gavin, JackRabbit Press; Joyce Hogan, Energy Solutions; Wendy Guay, Dennys; Steve Smith, American Family Insurance; Tye Hoffmann, Edward Jones Investments; Shawn Milne, Click Audio Video; Mike Jensen, Tooele County Auditor; Kathy Boltz, HeritageWest Credit Union; Debbie Winn, Chamber Executive Director (photographer) and several others that are not included in the photo.
Chamber Easter Egg Hunt Coming Soon! S pring is almost here, which means it’s time to start planning the 2011 Tooele County Chamber of Commerce Annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event is planned for Saturday April 23, 2011 and will be held at Deseret Peak Complex beginning at 10am. With the growth in the county we are expecting a large crowd at this year’s Easter activities. We would like to make this a fun experience for all the children. This is where your generous help comes in. The Easter Egg Hunt is funded completely by donations and the Tooele County Chamber of Commerce would
sincerely appreciate any contributions your business would be willing to make. HOW CAN YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY? Easy! This year we are asking for candy, treats, toys, etc. to be donated by local businesses. Prizes can be as big or small as you would like. It would be great if your company name and/or logo were on the prize! Attach a business card to something that a child would like! The candy and prizes will be placed on the field for children to retrieve during the hunt. You may wish to just donate a few larger prizes,
which is also acceptable. Be creative! An Easter basket full of goodies with your business card attached would be great idea. Dentists may wish to donate toothbrushes with their logo’s on them. A construction company may want to donate a small truck with their logo imprinted on it. Come up with your own unique way to promote your business. Please send your donation to: Tooele County Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 460, Tooele, Utah 84074 or give us a call if we can pick up the prizes or gift (435)882-0690. Thanks for supporting the Chamber of Commerce and our community activities

he Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an educational breakfast meeting on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 8-9am at Holiday Inn Express, 1531 North Main Street in Tooele; there is no charge for this event and a continental breakfast is included. We would like to invite any new Chamber member’s, or businesses that are thinking of joining the Chamber and want to know how they can benefit from a Chamber membership. The Chamber offers so many opportunities to make your business prosper and grow. This meeting will discuss the many chances you will have as a Chamber member to get your business to reach out to many people throughout the community. This meeting will discuss several advertising opportunities such as the Resource Directory, the monthly newsletter, and welcome packets. The Chamber’s sole purpose is to promote local business so we want to offer our Chamber members the opportunity to have a ribbon cutting or an article in the newsletter to showcase your business and introduce you to the community. The Chamber is all about networking. We want businesses to help each other and so that is why we offer bi-monthly luncheons and hold Business After Hours so that businesses can have the opportunity to network and get to know one another. The Chamber always has an event going on and we love to give businesses the opportunity to sponsor certain events such as the Easter Egg Hunt, the Golf Tournament, the Independence Day Breakfast, the Business Expo, and the Santa Parade. We also offer leadership opportunities. Businesses can serve on a committee or serve on the Board of Directors. Mentioned earlier the Chamber’s sole purpose is to promote local business and by doing so we have implemented the Come Together Campaign. We want people to shop local and to know that products are available in Tooele. That is why we work so hard to promote Tooele County so that our tax dollars stay in our own “backyard.” This meeting will discuss all of these items in greater detail. So if you are interested in coming whether you are already a member or a potential member please RSVP by Monday, March 14th by 5pm. You can RSVP by email firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 435-882-0690.

We’ve lived in Tooele for 11+ years, and have enjoyed seeing the businesses in the city become more sophisticated. We’ve been involved with the Chamber of Commerce for several years, and even facilitated a small business networking group called “Shop Tooele” several years ago, before the current “Come Together” campaign.
We’ve had a bit of a hiatus from local activity for the last two years – we started a marketing consulting firm that serves aviation and related industries. Our work has kept us out of town quite a bit. With travel becoming more and more “fun” lately, (thanks to increasing restrictions and so on) we’ve come to the conclusion that we’d like to spend more time at home, and much of the consulting we do would have strong local appeal as well – most of the principles of business and marketing are universal. We’ve learned more in the past two years of running marketing campaigns for aviation companies than we EVER learned in school. (John has an MBA in International Business and Finance, and I have a Master’s in Adult Education and Bachelor in Mass Communication.) We use a lot of the things we learned from courses we’ve taken, but have found the “real world” to be a much better teacher of what works and what doesn’t work while making businesses and entrepreneurs successful. We currently teach the Marketing Master Class for entrepreneurs and professionals to help them learn some of the “real world” lessons we’ve learned without the time or expense it took for us. We tackle one topic per month (Facebook, video

Continued from page 8 marketing, blogs, direct mail, trade shows, search engines or SEO) and cover it in depth. Our class members are encouraged to “show their work” and get feedback from one another – sometimes the best ideas come from a class member who’s faced the same issue. It’s a great venue for collaboration and learning about marketing. Most of the class members are owners of companies in aviation or related fields, but the topics are useful for anyone, particularly in technical or business to business (B2B)fields, where there isn’t much good information out there. We also write weekly articles on sales and marketing topics, and offer a free book titled “Sales & Marketing – Cost Effective Strategies & Tools” on our website, www. Tooelemarketing.com. We also host a podcast, “Your Marketing CoPilot”, on Blog Talk Radio. We interview thought leaders in aviation and marketing. We enjoy discussing sales and marketing tactics and strategies with these folks. We’ve been speakers at the Aviation Industry Expo in Las Vegas and I was a panelist on the Social Media panel at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) annual convention in Atlanta, Georgia. We’ve authored a book titled “Flight Plan to Sales Success – New Media Marketing in the Aviation Industry” that’s currently available on www.Amazon.com. We also write regularly for the Wheels Up business aviation column on Forbes.com.

Diabetes: The Leading Cause of......??? T
rue or False? Diabetes causes blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, impotence, stroke and amputations? Well, technically, FALSE! In fact, high blood sugars can cause all of the above, but well controlled diabetes is the leading cause of NOTHING! Ok, ok, while well controlled diabetes is the leading cause of NOTHING, it (the good control) certainly requires a lot of something—diligent self-management! Thus, the theme of recent media messages sponsored by the new Tooele County Health Department’s Diabetes Coalition has been: “Diabetes: Face it now! It’s not easy but it’s worth it.”
The Coalition has been organized with a small grant from the Utah State Diabetes Prevention and Control Program which just awarded the Health Department a large three year grant to establish diabetes education and other resources throughout the County. Coalition advisory board members include doctors, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, business leaders, representatives of health care and other community agencies and organizations, and persons with diabetes. The coalition meets to discuss community diabetes resources and needs and plan ways to meet those needs. This group will advise the health department on and support them in achieving the goals of the new grant. “Diabetes: Learn it, Live it, Do it!” is the theme chosen by the Coalition for March, the tradi tional Diabetes Alert Month. Tooele County citizens will be encouraged to know and reduce their risk for diabetes or, for those already with diabetes, to reduce their risks for the fright1676 N Progress Way ening complications. eat better and to help people know their diabetes risk. Diabetes is a condition characterized by high blood sugars. This problem involves insulin which acts like a key to open the way (or the door) for sugar to leave the blood and enter body cells where it can be used for energy. In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer makes insulin and therefore sugar stays in the blood and cannot enter the cells (to provide energy). In Type 2 diabetes, either the pancreas does not make enough insulin or the insulin does not work correctly (insulin resistance), similar to a rusty key that does not work well in opening locked doors. Often Type 2 diabetes involves both these factors---not enough insulin and insulin not working well (insulin resistance). Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have “prediabetes”—blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Research has shown that some long-term damage to the body, especially the heart and circulatory system, may already be occurring during prediabetes. Therefore, the Tooele County Diabetes Coalition is also encouraging people to know their risk for diabetes and work with their health care providers to make sure it is detected

and treated early, before such damage occurs. Research also shows that people at risk for diabetes can delay or, in some cases, even prevent it with exercise and weight control. These efforts make insulin work better while making the body need less insulin. Thus, the Diabetes Coalition will be encouraging these healthy habits which also help manage blood sugars in persons with diabetes. Tooele County has a history of high/ poor diabetes statistics. Our diabetes rate is 9%, compared to the state rate of 7.6%. We have greater rates for all diabetes related complications, except eye disease, than state rates and our rate of heart disease in persons with diabetes is especially high. Not only does diabetes make a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke 2 to 4 times higher, in Tooele County persons with diabetes have high rates of other factors that also cause heart disease and stroke: 63% have high blood pressure, 61% high cholesterol and 91% are overweight/obese. It is important to remember, however, that people who have had previously poorly controlled blood sugar (and other risk factors) can reduce their risks of complications by gaining control NOW! Community response to the Diabetes Coalition and its initial efforts has been extremely positive. Tooele County seems ready to more aggressively face diabetes and thus improve health. Recently the Health Department contracted Dan Jones to survey the opinions of people in Tooele County. Of health problems, obesity, cancer, and diabetes were of greatest and very significant concern. Lack of exercise and unhealthy eating were the lifestyles of most serious concern. Coalition plans will be to bring the county and individual communities and community groups together to improve these issues. To do so, business support for a scholarship fund for diabetes education (and, hopefully, other diabetes needs) for persons without insurance coverage will be sought. Several Tooele County Chamber of Commerce businesses have offered

Continued from page 10 support for Coalition activities and more such support will be needed. Persons to help with any aspect of the Diabetes Coalition are also being sought. To offer such support, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 435-840-0299 or 435-277-2482. The Coalition will be on Facebook and Twitter and the Tooele County web site (tooelehealth.org) will be continually updated to feature pictures and interviews of people dealing with diabetes as well as diabetes information. Many compliments have already been received for these efforts. The previously mentioned Grant is certainly once such acknowledgement. On March 26th the State Wide Diabetes Expo included activities suggested and used first by our Coalition and Tooele County residents with diabetes were featured in picture
and video there. The upcoming April Utah Public Health Association Confereence will offer a presentation about our County diabetes efforts. On March 9th, the Chamber of Commerce luncheon will feature a presentation about diabetes in Tooele County and a discussion of ways businesses can help improve the situation and ways the Coalition can support business efforts to improve health. These efforts can truly be called a community mobilization. It has been inspiring to see such cooperation and commitment at all levels of our community. Indeed, it is likely we will soon say that Tooele County Diabetes Coalition efforts are a leading cause of improved health and well-being, developed as a result of strong community support and cooperation!
